Patti Arntz joins Jocelyn for a conversation on today's bonus episode! Patti has been a music educator and church musician in the Twin Cities area for over 40 years. She has degrees in music from Hamline University, St. Paul, MN and Drake University, Des Moines, IA and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. She recently retired from teaching elementary music with the Robbinsdale Area Schools in the Twin Cities area. During her 30 years of instructing young children to sing and make music, she also directed the Robbinsdale All-District Elementary Honors Choir for 15 years. Throughout her teaching career, she served as an organist and director of youth/adult choirs in local churches. In 2003, Patti was contacted by St. Olaf College to see if she would take a student teacher. The answer was yes, of course. That student teacher was Jocelyn Hagen. The favor was returned when Jocelyn served as a mentor for Patti's compositions and arrangements. In 2010, Patti commissioned Jocelyn to compose a children's choir piece in memory of Teresa Benjamin, Assistant Director of the Robbinsdale Elementary Honor Choir. Teresa passed away in the spring of 2003. This composition, “I Started Out Singing,” has become very popular in recent years. Keeping in touch with her elementary music roots, she serves as an adjunct professor at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, Minnesota, instructing elementary education majors on teaching and integrating music into their future classrooms. Patti lives in the Twin Cities area with her husband, Rolland, where she enjoys outdoor activities, traveling and cooking. She sings with Singers in Accord and is a charter member of the choir. Her adult children, Kyle and Melani are both very involved in music in the Twin Cities area. JAAAAAAAAA! We gaan weer beginnen! Jullie favoriete Neerlandsch Zwaarste Metalshow De Loodzware Jongens seizoen 2! En gaan we dingen anders doen? HELL NO! Luisteren Dus!!"
Steve Arntz is the co-founder of ‘Campfire'...and a father and a husband. Steve speaks about realising what ‘family first' really means to him…what it really feels like to commit to that statement. We hear about Steve's spouse and children. We hear how Steve has managed to get back to his family being the centre of his world and how challenging that has been throughout his entrepreneurial journey. Steve speaks very openly about what Campfire means to him and all he is building with this work as a founder, parent and entrepreneur. His mission statement with this work is so powerful: ‘Universal access to meaningfully connected experiences that inspire people to live better lives together'. We explore the seed of why Steve wanted to build this platform and all it provides to support his ‘augmented humanity' mission with the work and technology he's building with Campfire. The three questions that started everything… What got you to this place right here? Where do you want to go? How are you planning to get there? People just loved these conversations…and still do! How creating a pack of cards based on thousands of hours of research began the process towards Campfire. A conversation filled with honesty, integrity and inspiration. Power Takeaways: We can trick ourselves into thinking that work first equals family first…especially if your mission driven then work becomes first and family comes second. It's taken 15 years to know and feel that family first = family first. The mission of Campfire is true and real. Mission Statement: ‘universal access to meaningfully connected experiences that inspire people to live better lives together'. How universal access to conversations and connection for people everywhere. Technology built that supports facilitated guided spaces. Reference to Esther Perel's alternative meaning when she speaks about “AI”...'Artificial Intelligence'. ‘Augmented humanity' …how can we start to see technology as a way to bring out our humanity and accentuate our humanity we will ‘win'. The power of asking the question ‘why are you here?' and ‘what do you want to have happen next?'. Asked the three questions and then mapped out the data that came back. How the physical sketches that inspired this work started. How building a deck of cards was the start of this. How Steve has moved from being (self confessed) self centric and moved across to ‘others centric'. It can take years!! How he is devoted to building conversations for people. Find the most important relationship in your life and what is the one thing I can do to enhance, build or make that relationship better. Hey beautiful souls, it's Rachael Meeds here, diving deep into a topic that sets my heart ablaze: the essence of feminine leadership and crafting a life that's both rich and relaxed. Today, I have the immense pleasure of welcoming someone who embodies this spirit in every fiber of her being, Christina Arntz (@thefemininebusinesscoach), the feminine business coach. Christina and I crossed paths in a mastermind a few years back, and her approach to blending business acumen with a profound connection to femininity blew me away. Prepare to have your paradigms shifted and your spirit lifted as we explore the misunderstood realms of feminine leadership. Christina, with her no-bullshit energetic alignment and title as the queen of pleasure, breaks down how integrating our feminine essence can lead not just to greater business success but to a more fulfilled, rich, and relaxed life. This conversation promises to be a beacon for those of us yearning to align our professional pursuits with our deepest, most authentic selves. Embracing femininity in business fosters an environment where ease and abundance coexist. The transition from masculine to feminine energy involves embracing vulnerability and trusting intuition. Simplified processes and authentic connection to self and desires are key to business success. Embodying leadership means daring to follow your heart unapologetically, even in the face of uncertainty. Quotes: "Feminine leadership is creating in alignment with your heart, your soul, your body." - Christina Arntz "Yes, simplicity is success and complexity is typically where ‘failure lies'". - Rachael Meeds "I believe in the power of breathing and simplicity to unlock our greatest potential." - Christina Arntz “When I use that phrase rich and relaxed, it's always like rich in love, rich in friendship, rich in experiences, rich in everything. It's literally like creating wealth, embodied from the inside out". - Rachael Meeds "Being an embodied leader means truly doing whatever your heart calls you to do, unapologetically." - Christina Arntz Thank you, my lovely listeners, for joining Christina and me on this transformative journey. I was always an athlete, competing in all types of sports; gymnastics, wrestling and football (to name a few). But at the age of 15 I was introduced to bodybuilding, and knew right away that I wanted to take part in this sport and be a professional bodybuilder. It all began in that moment the desire to learn everything I can about diet, nutrition, training, supplementation and recovery. Learning the breakdowns of nutrients, how they work in your body, and most of all how to manipulate them into working for sports performance was my true passion.

In the podcast's latest episode, we spotlight Bryan Kohberger, revealing a troubled history that could offer insights into his recent alleged crimes. Kohberger, now 28, who faces charges of murdering four University of Idaho students, had previously been expelled from a high school law enforcement program. The reason? Multiple complaints about his behavior, primarily from female students. From Dreams of Law Enforcement to Expulsion Bryan Kohberger's aspiration to join the ranks of law enforcement was no secret. As a high school student at Monroe Career and Technical Institute, he was a part of their law enforcement program. However, as Tanya Carmella-Beers, a former administrator of the institute, revealed on the podcast, his behavior led to his eventual removal from the program. Carmella-Beers was quoted, stating, "[Kohberger] wasn't gonna end up in the police academy." She further explained that he had taken the program "extremely seriously," but his path took a turn after a group of female students lodged a complaint against him. While she refrained from going into specific details due to student privacy laws, she noted that the circumstances leading to his exit "now, makes sense." From Law Enforcement Dreams to Gruesome Crimes On November 13th, tragedy struck near the University of Idaho when four students, Goncalves, 21, Madison Mogen, 21, Xana Kernodle, 20, and Ethan Chapin, 20, were found dead in their off-campus residence. Kohberger, with his once cherished dreams of law enforcement, now stands as the primary suspect for these heinous crimes. Kohberger's subsequent activities after being dismissed from the law enforcement program also raise eyebrows. He transferred to a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning course but dropped out a year later. Interestingly, he used his brief stint in the law enforcement program to secure a part-time security guard position at Mount Pleasant High School. His tenure there was short-lived, ending with a forced resignation under mysterious circumstances. The Evolution of a Suspect Kohberger's high school years were marked by personal transformations. According to close friends Casey Arntz and Bree, he faced weight-related bullying, leading him to lose nearly 100 pounds during his senior year. However, this physical transformation was accompanied by a behavioral shift. Kohberger started exhibiting bullying behavior himself, targeting Arntz's brother with physical aggression. Bree also highlighted another disturbing development: Kohberger's descent into drug use, notably heroin. A report from DailyMail.com further paints a picture of a man who consistently made others, especially women, uncomfortable. This behavior extended into his adult life. Jordan Serulneck, owner of a Pennsylvania bar, described Kohberger as someone who made "creepy comments" and was aggressive towards female staff. Additionally, during his tenure as a teaching assistant at Washington State University, Kohberger faced accusations of sexism. The Legal Battle Ahead Kohberger, who has plead not guilty, is set to face trial on October 2. The pre-trial hearings have been contentious. The defense demands more time to address potential procedural issues with the grand jury indictment from May, and they're also pushing for further disclosure on the DNA profiles prosecutors plan to use. In contrast, prosecutors urge Kohberger to provide evidence of his alibi for the night of the murders. They've countered the defense's requests with their own, ensuring that DNA profiles remain protected and addressing other timeline concerns in Kohberger's upcoming trial. Key evidence against Kohberger includes his DNA found on a knife sheath at the crime scene and CCTV footage of his white Hyundai Elantra car near the scene. Another potential blow to his defense is a witness statement from a surviving roommate, who claims the killer had "bushy eyebrows," matching Kohberger's appearance. Overlooking the Blue Earth River, Woodland Hills Memorial Park Cemetery sits on a secluded hilltop with the city of Mankato spread below. It's a quiet green space, but one Minnesota State University, Mankato associate professor Jill Cooley says has a troubled history.“Racial discrimination doesn't make any logical sense in any case,” Cooley said. “But a cemetery makes less logical sense than anywhere else. Cooley and her students found Woodland Hills Memorial Park, formerly Grand View Memorial Park when founded in 1938, has a racial covenant prohibiting nonwhite people from being buried in specific plots within the cemetery. The covenant now has no legal standing following a 1948 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. This was a result of a four-year research project by MSU Mankato called “Mapping Mankato Project,” which was inspired by Mapping Prejudice in the Twin Cities. It explored how segregation contributed to how Mankato's neighborhoods formed and how it impacted generational wealth for marginalized communities. Enlisting the help of Mankato East High School students, together they read and analyzed deeds, documented covenants and mapped the affected properties. There were covenants found on properties in seven neighborhoods around Mankato. Organizers hope to expand the research to surrounding communities such as North Mankato and St. Peter in Nicollet County in the future. ‘The system is rigged'As part of the race, ethnicity and civil rights class, Mankato East High School teacher Tim Meegan connected with the Mapping Mankato Project and got his students involved. Through the class, students worked directly with property deeds and helped with analyzing them for racial or restrictive covenants. Some were based on class, prohibiting apartments from being built in certain neighborhoods. Others targeted religious communities. It was a first-hand look at how prevalent housing discrimination was even in Mankato, leading to how some neighborhoods were formed. “The reason you see disparities is because of racism,” Meegan said. “Racism that goes back centuries, and is hard-baked into American society. The restrictive covenant is just one little piece that shows kids how the system is rigged, and has been rigged to benefit certain groups of people and to oppress other groups of people.”For Mankato East High School senior Grace Engen, the project hit close to home — literally. She learned her house off of Glenwood Avenue had a racial covenant.“And it was like, ‘This is real, and this is where I am right now. This is a part of my everyday life,'” Engen said. “You can kind of see it, actually. My whole street is all older white people who have owned these houses for a very long time and passed them down. It's all our town and it opens up a view of why certain parts of Mankato are racialized.” In Ramsey County New map highlights home deeds with racist language Rochester Confronts its segregated housing history, Mayo founders' role One lawn sign at a time Minneapolis effort aims to counter racist housing deeds It also painted a complex picture of history, highlighting how racial segregation existed in the north and wasn't limited to just the southern part of the country during the Jim Crow era. Senior Brinley Ketter, who is Black, said it was surreal to physically see the covenants with racial slurs and discriminatory language that targeted different groups.“It was a way to shut down color in the community,” Ketter said. “A way of putting white power into the collective of the community, as a way of building their power instead of ours. And, that really just wasn't right to me.”Meegan believed it was important for stereotypes to be broken, and for his students to understand discrimination. He said housing is the number one way middle class families in the United States build wealth, and racism blocked many people of color for generations. “I'm a third, fourth generation white American, and my parents were fortunate enough to be able to purchase a home, and my grandparents, and so that generational wealth. That's a significant source of privilege for me,” he said. “But, if other people were locked out of those same opportunities, that explains why you see such disparities.”‘We have to do the work'The Blue Earth County Recorder's Office houses the copies of real estate records, where researchers and students searched for racial covenants during the Mapping Mankato Project. Michael Stalberger, property and environmental resources director, said that the county does not have the right to pull off the clauses from property deeds, and only the property owner can pursue discharging them. “Even though for 70 years, the state of Minnesota said you cannot have these sorts of things on your property, the Supreme Court has said it for just as long, we still have to carry that forward because we don't have the authority to take [the covenant] off,” he added. The Mankato City Council voted unanimously on May 22 to condemn discriminatory covenants. Although symbolic, the city does plan to continue pursuing discharging covenants on municipal properties, educating the public about housing discrimination and helping property owners get connected to attorneys who are willing to assist with removing the clauses from their deeds. City Manager Susan Arntz said that history can't be changed, but the type of legacy future generations will inherit can.“My objective is to make sure our words and our actions match,” Arntz said. “If we really think we want to be leading the way as a vibrant, diverse regional community, we have to do the work.”

KVI's John Carlson explores the political motives involving the San Francisco Elections Commission which has voted to not renew the contract of the city's elections supervisor, ostensibly, because he is white. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Elections Commission President, Chris Jerdonek wrote in an email Monday to the elections supervisor John Arntz,
Even when our best laid plans are rock-solid, life (and the marketplace) has other ideas. Some surveys suggest that 70% of successful businesses end up doing something they never intended in the beginning. For career and personal growth, being prepared for a big pivot isn't easy. Steve Arntz learned this all too well. He's been developing technology products and their marketing for more than 15 years. His current company, which he co-founded, is called Campfire. The platform was on a mission to connect people. The tech was good and the team was right. But its true value came from an unexpected place. Steve shares valuable lessons about leadership, including the importance of getting out of the way: of yourself, and those you care about.

On the podcast today we have Felix Arntz. Felix is a Developer Relations Engineer at Google and a WordPress core committer. He is the lead engineer for the Site Kit plugin for WordPress and has been a regular contributor to WordPress for several years. He's also been involved in the newly created WordPress performance team which is trying to work out how WordPress can stay ahead of the performance curve. He's on the podcast today to talk about how the WordPress community need to be focussing more on performance. Not only do search engines place more emphasis upon speed, but the rise of other CMSs might also reflect their ability to optimise their platforms, given that they don't have the plugin and theme architecture which WordPress does. It's an interesting conversation about an area which is going to matter more and more in the months and years to come.
Despite the fact that WordPress' share of the CMS market is very strong, third-party CMS's like Wix and Shopify have been growing their customer base in recent years. As single platforms, they can be very focused upon performance and don't have to worry about the possible performance issues which the plugin and theme architecture of WordPress brings. Is this something that we need to be concerned about? Are website clients beginning to ask more probing questions about performance, and is WordPress keeping up with the marketing and messaging? He also talks today about why it's important for the whole WordPress community to be thinking about performance when building any website. It's no secret that Google and other search engines are very interested in making the web faster, and future rankings could well be boosted by having a performant site. So we talk through some of the ways that this can be achieved. We also talk about Felix's career, the fact that there's an emerging industry of people who are able to work exclusively on website performance, and earn their living from this expertise. This could be in the writing of code, the optimisation of assets as well as the configuration of hosting options. Felix recommends some things which might be of use for people wishing to find out more. It's an interesting conversation about an area which is going to matter more and more in the months and years to come. Useful links.
