Scott Ross, legendary VFX executive and co-founder of Digital Domain, joins the podcast for an unfiltered conversation about the state of the film industry and the visual effects business. With decades of experience and a reputation for telling it like it is, Scott digs into the systemic challenges facing Hollywood—from broken economic models in studio filmmaking to the relentless pressure on VFX vendors. He reflects on his time building Digital Domain alongside James Cameron and shares insights from his new book, UPSTART: The Digital Film Revolution – Managing the Unmanageable, which chronicles his journey through the chaos and creativity that have defined modern filmmaking. While Scott doesn't sugarcoat the industry's issues, he also sees glimmers of hope. He highlights the rise of global talent and a shift toward more authentic, filmmaker-driven storytelling. The conversation touches on the role of AI, the decline of theatrical experiences, and the urgent need for systemic change—while still holding onto the belief that the future of cinema is worth fighting for. With honesty, insight, and passion, Scott offers a rare perspective from someone who's been at the center of the digital revolution and still has something to say.

Digital Film - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
#96 - As Mike Gallagher spent his teenage years filming his friends skateboarding around the Metro Vancouver area, someone took notice. A high school teacher recognized Mike's aptitude for film and developed an independent study course that allowed Mike free reign over the school's media equipment. It didn't take long for Mike to become hooked and as he approached graduation he applied to the Art Institute of Vancouver's Digital Film and Production program. The plan was for Mike to live out his dream of working in Vancouver's continually expanding film industry. The early years of Mike's career as a production assistant were a GRIND. Long hours, inconsistent work schedules, and low pay doing the work no one else wanted to do certainly wasn't glamorous but Mike looked for opportunities where he could learn from those around him. He was watching and he was learning. Once he had a few years of experience under his belt Mike knew he was ready for something more so when he got a call for his next PA gig he said ‘no, what else have you got?' The answer to that question was the props department and it was there that Mike got to flex his creative muscles while continuing to learn from expert prop masters – true veterans of the industry. Over time, the lifestyle of the film industry began to eat away at Mike's personal life and he saw a potentially complicated future in the family lives of many of his colleagues. After a particularly difficult night on a set in below-freezing temperatures, he realized he needed a major change and the next day he called his parents to let them he was moving home because he was going back to school. That decision propelled Mike into a new career that has given him the opportunity to work on video game franchises like Electronic Arts' NHL and UFC titles and allowed him to rub shoulders with athletes like Connor McDavid, P.K Subban, Connor McGregor, and Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse' Johnson. How did Mike do it? As our little mini-series comes to an end, what have we learned along the way? We have some great feedback from our community, especially on the Sunny 16 Discord Fuji cameras can shoot IR natively with just a 720nm filter and so do some other brands as wellKolari Lens Hotspot Database Dave Powell: 5 Largely Unknown Digital-Infrared Gems (35mmc) Emulating film is not just about the grain and the colours - actually shooting parameters matter too!In this context: Video by Media Division about ultra-fast lenses (f0.7) Realism in photography is sometimes a problem and detracts from the image - especially when you get to the uncanny valley Smart TVs aren't 60fps is actually dangerous (not really, just to Ade's mental health) And much, much more! Fallen angels have weaved their way into our society and cultures, and their occupation of humanity is already well underway. From the manipulation of economies to the technological enslavement of billions of people, the long foreshadowed indications of the agenda are happening right in front of us. Are we being led to buy into an agenda that will ultimately lead to our demise? How do we guard our souls against manipulation? In this episode, author of the profound book, the “Nephilim Apocalypse: Rise Of The Nephilim New World Order”, Joseph Opare joins me to discuss all the indicators that we're already in a dark brotherhood-orchestrated apocalypse. Three Things We Learned What Satan ultimately wants from usHow will the dark forces accomplish their mission aided by humans? The hard question we all have to ask ourselvesHow can we tell if we're truly free or victims of manufactured consent? Soon summer is here and many independent filmmakers will take the opportunity to produce short and feature films. Therefore, we are now releasing a bonus conversation between the directors (and producers) for the cinema-screened feature films Mareld (thriller in the archipelago/sea) and The House At the End of the Forest (horror in a cabin). They talk about the whole process from idea to financing, crewing up, shooting, post production to a finished master. An honest conversation about how "sometimes it does not turn out as you think" but at the same time very inspiring! Se båda filmerna på SF Anytime, koden DARKLABEL ger 20% rabatt.

For nearly 20 years, Vanessa Manago has been wowing audiences with her pointed storytelling style. From stage to screen, her productions are just the right balance of dynamic visuals, heartfelt dialogues and a concert of soundtracks and sound design elements. They are aggressive yet palatable, inspiring while challenging – she knows how to engage audiences in a way that makes them a part of the story. Vanessa stumbled into production while teaching Music at a private school. She wrote and produced her first stageplay in 2004. The 75-minute production entitled “From Glory” had a cast of more than 200 children. It portrayed the preparation of Jesus' arrival on Earth from the perspective of Heaven. The production ended with his safe arrival in the arms of his mother. The sold-out production was a great success and although Vanessa had been trained in audio production, this experience was just what was needed to awaken her passion for production and visual storytelling. Two years later, she returned to school. While completing a B.F.A. in Digital Film, she began putting her skill to work by producing short format videos for A-list entertainers, non-profit organizations and corporate brands. She then completed contracting work at a large Federal Agency, further refining her production and storytelling skill and crafting her unique talent for creating digital product lines. Vanessa has been celebrated for her ability to “story-tize” high-level concepts and present them on screen. As a result of her unique approach to digital storytelling, Vanessa has received more than 18 awards, including 4 Corporate Awards and many personal notes of appreciation and recognition from high-ranking Officials in the Department of Defense. Today, Vanessa is focused on working exclusively with corporate and non-profit brands that have adopted storytelling in their marketing and outreach strategies. She is a master of creating a media-based product lines and, as a result, works primarily with clients that are looking to build their media base and achieve long-term outcomes. She has built the infrastructure of VMI Brands, a full-service, full-cycle, media conglomerate that takes stories from script to screen. The family of brands consist of The VMI Agency, a production design company that conceptualizes stories and completes all pre-production tasks, Switch Digital Studios, an all-digital film and video production studio, and Latter Reign Entertainment, a distribution arm for faith-based content. Vanessa is married with 3 children. The family lives in White Plains, MD just outside of Washington, DC. In a change of format, Bill Manning invites EM of Emulsive and Paul McKay, CEO of Analogue Wonderland, to discuss the recent grim new for digital camera manufacturers for Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Olympus. Sony sells its shares back to Olympus, some viewing a dumping of devalued stock, Nikon fails to innovate and as well outsourcing all of it components. None of this is new to these manufacturers, the writing has been on the wall for years, once dismissed by Canon CEO Fujio Mitarai. While the digital camera market questions its future, film photography has show significant growth as Kodak reports its film division experience 21% growth year-over-year. In addition to it's growth, other film manufacturers are feeling bull-ish in bringing new products to the market: Fujifilm Acros 100 II, Film Ferrania P30, Lomography Metropolis, etc.

If you're about to make, or have just made, any indie movie in the digital space, Chad Miller is the guy you want to know. He is currently the founder of Cinema Machine Management, which consults filmmakers on distribution and marketing. He's been doing this for 15 years. These stories and more in this week’s audience participation podcast brought to us by Lauren Ciampa and Sara Raz reading from the anonymously submitted audience participation forms just after intermission at the live event. This act was recorded in front of a live audience on March 20th, 2018 at, The Wilma in Missoula, MT. The theme was “Right Place Right Time”. Then, Katy-Robin Garton’s story was recorded in front of a live audience on February 19, 2013 at Monks Bar in Missoula, MT. The theme was “Ten”. Katy-Robin Garton bickers with her sister about who must empty the poop or the pee bag as they hike up Denali, 14,00 feet above where they began. They make a decision about turning back or moving on after an unexpected storm. Katy-Robin Garton was raised in the Rocky Mountains and now resides in Missoula, Montana. Learn more about Katy and the work she does at sproutfilms.net And our final story comes to us from Aaron Roos, and is a little longer than the typical Tell Us Something story. There were some people who dropped out at the last minute that night, and I told Aaron that he could run long. This story was recorded in front of a live audience on February 19, 2013 at Monks Bar in Missoula, MT. The theme was “Ten”. In his story, Aaron is near death with sickness but must travel all the way to Africa because of a job he held on a reality television program where he was responsible to quarantine the losers of the show. Shooting BTS (behind-the-scenes), or http://creativeskillset.org/job_roles/3838_epk_directorproducer (EPK )(electronic press kit) as it's known in the film industry, can be a great and a rather appropriate way for a documentary filmmaker to make some additional income. I mean, who else to better create short promotional-type videos or vignettes than a filmmaker who owns their own gear, can conduct and shoot an interview, shoot some broll, then edit into a small concise package for quick delivery? In this episode, we examine the position that is tailor-made for the documentary filmmaker, how to get into it, and how what you are already doing in your doc life makes you the perfect candidate for this industry position. Podcast Conversation For our shared conversation segment, I am honoured to have on feature and documentary film director, http://www.stefanavalos.com/ (Stefan Avalos). You may remember Avalos from the very early days of digital film. And with a good reason, since he and fellow filmmaker http://lanceweiler.com/ (Lance Weiler) were true pioneers in the digital film field, with their ground-breaking feature, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8NzDgFtlrU (The Last Broadcast). And now, with his new film, http://www.stradstyle.com/ (Strad Style), winner of http://www.slamdance.com/ (Grand Jury and Audience Awards), Avalos enters the hallowed halls of documentary. To say that this was one of my favourite conversations with a doc industry guest in recent times, would be putting it lightly. Topics like his hand in digital cinema history, the influence of a doc like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMFZOu8rDUQ (American Movie) on his work, and the various headscarfs that his lead subject in Strad Style was prone to wearing. It's enlightening, hilarious, and inspiring all at once. So yeah, not an episode to be missed! Related Resources In the first segment of the episode, I mentioned the work of documentary filmmaker, http://lesblank.com/ (Les Blank), in particular his documentary film, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burden_of_Dreams (Burden of Dreams), which was basically the making-of http://www.wernerherzog.com/ (Werner Herzog)‘s http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/great-movie-fitzcarraldo-1982 (Fitzcarraldo). Enjoy the trailer for the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYOYi9WLLVU Stefan Avalos' digital feature film, The Last Broadcast, was not only a massive influence on my filmmaking career, but really digital cinema, as a whole. Here's a trailer for the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSCptQ1M7Rs And now, we can all be thankful, that Avalos has decided to make his first feature documentary, the brilliant, Strad Style! In this show, we discuss: -How manual therapy is integrated into the biopsychosocial framework -Rethinking the goals of your initial evaluation -Strengths and limitations of a pain science perspective on patient care -The roadmap to a military physical therapy career -Jason’s hiring process for seasoned professionals and new graduates -And so much more! While Jason is a proponent for making advances in research, he also believes that there is more to gain from the existing literature to improve patient care. He challenges clinicians and researchers to “actually start using the evidence we already have. What can we do to build processes in our health systems to help us better integrate existing research evidence and clinical practice to make it relevant to clinicians, to make it relevant to payers, and to make it popular and effective for patients so patients start asking for it… What can we do to integrate and better use what we already know?” Jason believes that there is a positive outlook for physical therapy and that the profession can fill a desired role in the current marketplace. He states, “Patients are looking for a low cost, low risk, non-invasive approach that they can have quick access to that is an appropriate match to their goals, that is matched to exactly what they want, and you can get what you want when you want it. There are not too many people in medicine that are offering something close to that, but PT is one of them.“ Utilizing the biopsychosocial framework for patient care has proven to be effective for Jason in his career. He advices, “One of the things I say the most to PT students is this job is half psychology and I used to think that my job was the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical musculoskeletal conditions. That’s actually not my job. I am in the business of behavior change. And if you’re a PT, you’re in the business of behavior change too. And the sooner you understand that and the sooner you start to work on your ability to help engage others for behavior change, the more success you will have in your profession. “ For more about Jason: Jason Silvernail DPT, DSc, FAAOMPT qualified with a Master of Physical Therapy degree from the University Of Scranton Pennsylvania in 1997, and he has been in practice as a physical therapist since then.
