This week Matt and Tom were joined by the CEO of Life's a Pitch Dave Bulmer to pitch the biopics of some incredible musical legends. Regrettably this week there was a violent incursion by an unknown force into Life's a Pitch Towers, please listen to the end of the podcast but be wary that there is some seemingly violent audio from the incursion.

Then, we pick up from last week with the Crimson Ghost and Horror Business, the deaths of Nancy Spungeon and Sid Vicious, Tammy, Hitchcock, Bernard Herrmann and the infamous shower scene in Psycho, the documentary 78/52 and the Bomb Under the Table Technique, Diabolique's influence on Psycho and the sequels, Vera Clouzot's untimely death and her work on The Wages of Fear - remade as Sorcerer, Scarface and Raging Bull scenes that copy Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero and his work with the Misfits on Bruiser, the Famous Monster's album and the singles from the movie Bruiser, 3 Hits from Hell and the Fiend Club, Horror Hotel aka the City of the Dead, Jason Statham, King Diamond's Sleepless Nights, White and Rob Zombie, Fanatic aka Die, Die My Darling! with Tallulah Bankhead, Vincent Price and the Oblong Box, Herschell Gordon Lewis and his Blood Feast's inspiration on the slasher genre, Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood and the Psychopath aka Schizo, and last but not least…Mommy, Can I Go Out and Kill Tonight!?! Join us as we discuss some Slayer Santas with criminal tendencies! We kick things off by exploring all the different laws and regulations Santa breaks on a regular basis, from tax evasion to unlawful surveillance. Next, we dive into …And All Through the House, both the segment from the 1972 anthology film and the episode from the 1989 television series Tales from the Crypt, the ladder featuring the most menacing Larry Drake as the escaped lunatic. We also get to hear Mike's Cryptkeeper impersonation! If you've ever wanted to glue a beard and eyebrows to your face and go on a Yuletide rampage, then Christmas Evil aka You Better Watch Out from 1980, which is John Waters favorite Christmas themed film, is just for you. A Black Christmas / Friday the 13th mashup, To All a Goodnight. 1984's Silent Night, Deadly Night also gets a lengthy, in-depth analysis, just in time for GARBAGE DAY! The film with many names that the ripped off as the basis for Home Alone, Dial Code Santa Claus aka Game Over features a Slayer Santa and a young French Rambo. Wrapping it all up, we get silly with the horrible Silent Night remake from 2012, which was partially inspired by the tragic real life Covina Massacre on Christmas Eve in 2008, where Bruce Pardo crashed the party of his in-laws and killed 9 members of his ex-wife's family dressed in a custom made Santa suit before torching their house with a homemade flamethrower that he brought with him wrapped as a present. Sources for this episode include How Many Crimes Would Santa be Guilty of If He Were Real? by Sean Braswell and Adam Rockoff's Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film, 1978-1986. It was a genre that defined a generation of horror, from every hidden stalker trope to the teens who just wanted to have fun. Movie aficionado and classmate Mikey joins us as we talk through how slasher films came into existence, hit a fever pitch in the mid-80s, and gave way to 90's horror and beyond. We hit the highlights--and many lowlights--that made these movies the unstoppable monsters they were. So stay together, lock your doors, and don't you dare wander off alone... because we're talking Freddy, Jason, Michael, Leatherface, Chucky, and so many more villains ready to spoil our good time. -- Can I Borrow Your Notes? -- Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film In Search of Darkness Nightmares in Red, White, and Blue: The Evolution of the American Horror Film Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy -- Teacher's Pets -- Join the Class of 80's High: 80shighpodcast@gmail.com Follow on Instagram: @80shighpodcast and Twitter: @high_80s Theme song by Greg Reed at gregreedmusic.com Cover art by Alex Goddard at alexgoddarddesign.com

Sunshine and Alix are finally back! Much like one of the villains from these horror franchises... (dumb joke is dumb) Point is: A, we had to get back by Halloween. I mean... horror podcast. B, today we're covering the history of slasher films because it's so damn fun and it felt topical. We start with an early history of horror films in general, then follow the trail of the slasher from Agatha Christie's mystery novels to the Golden Age of Slashers in the 80s and then... wherever the hell we are now. We are so grateful to everyone who has patiently waited, but like, still excitedly, for our return. 2020 has been a kick in the ass for everyone and your support has been a tremendous boon to us. Resources: - Luckily for this episode, this information mostly lives rent free in Alix's brain already - Horrible Reviews: (this is a Dutch youtuber I'm really fond of and I got some of the information for the history of horror movies from his channel) But in particular - this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twMMoy-omXw - Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film, 2006. Directed by Jeff McQueen - Nightmares in Red, White and Blue, 2009. Directed by Andrew Monument - Literally every film (and book) discussed in this episode
What would YOU have titled the new Candyman movie? Was it confusing to you as well that, despite being in the same continuity, it has the same title as the first one? Andres Serrano is back to guest host on this one. He'd seen only the first one before this one (which mainly continues a thread from the first one). I've seen all three and I recap them for him before we dive into our thoughts on this newer one and what it had to say. And of course, we went on some fun tangents, including such topics as guilty pleasure movies and things from the ‘90s that should be brought back! Give this a listen! Show Notes: 4:15 - Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film. That's what it was called. 6:05 - Candyman (1992) recap 9:08 - Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh recap 10:30 - Candyman: Day of the Dead recap 13:30 - Candyman (2020) discussion begins. 17:40 - Single-handedly? I should've pointed out how fitting that word is. 28:00 - The Lego Movie was the movie that was escaping me. 49:20 - Infinity War but there's a laugh track 49:40 - Shrek-It Ralph 50:15 - Fresh Guacamole (again) 50:45 - Kandyman article on the TARDIS Wiki. Also, here's an article called “Some Idiot Defends the Kandy Man.” 59:40 - Men in Black: International is in the same continuity as the original trilogy. But in my head, I thought it was a “reboot” in the sense that it MIB was reinvented with a new cast and such. 59:50 - For some reason, I neglected to mention that the first RoboCop film came out 1987 and that a new one called RoboCop Returns, which will also follow the trend of being a direct follow-up to the first film and ignoring the sequels. 1:00:15 - I also neglected to mention that the first Die Hard movie came out 1988. 1:02:55 - Obviously, there's the Serenity movie and the Firefly comics. 1:07:10 - The drink was called ‘What the Flock,' which was made with Blue Chair Bay Rum. We've talked about formulas before, but mostly in the context of escaping formulas and reinenting them.NOW however we're talking about using existing formulas to create a story, or creating new formulas and sticking to them to come up with your stories.Formulas can be a good tool to write with, along with their close sibling “the trope” they take elements that are proven to work and stick them on a solid framework for you to more easily create your story around. All you need to do is plug in your characters and situation and see how it all fits. Formulas are comfortable for people and make it easier for a writer to structure their story faster AND in a way they know should appeal to people. Happy Halloween, listeners! In celebration of the holiday The Four Seasons of Film is proud to present a very special episode. Nathan and Scotty watch John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and, of course, do most of the talking for you. They discuss typical serial killer behavior, the steady hand of John Carpenter, the independent nature of the film, M (1931), Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (2006), and the “horror” of franchise sequels. Take a break from the candy, pull back the covers, and celebrate this classic film that started it all.
