What's up, dudes? What if Kevin McCallister had a mullet and was super into Rambo? Now we've got “Dial Code Santa Claus” or “Deadly Games” or “Game Over” or “3615 code Père Noël”! Yes, this many-titled French film is bonkers, and I've got Jeff and Jay from Horror for the Holidays with me to talk about it!Thomas is an incredibly intelligent young boy whose mother is a wealthy store manager. On Christmas Eve, he makes contact with a vagrant (escaped mental patient?) through a pre-internet Minitel. Subsequently the vagrant poses as Santa, and even goes so far as to get a job at the manager's store. He's summarily dismissed after slapping a child. Eventually, wanting revenge and to play with Tommy, he hijacks a store can and drives to his house. Tommy, with an out of control mullet and a Rambo attitude, has to defend his house and his diabetic grandfather from the psychotic Santa. He “Home Alone”s his house and with his technological genius, sets up traps to counter the dog-killing intruder. Cut to a Bonnie Tyler song.Trapdoors? Check. Flocked beard? Got it. Grandpa hiding in a suit of armor like Gossamer from Looney Tunes? For sure! Dave Roberts returns for a massive episode covering all sorts of media.  We kick off by talking about stuff like Jackass Forever and the state of Bruce Willis's career, John talks revisiting OG Final Fantasy VII with an HD coat of paint via mods, and Dave discusses the Dexter revival miniseries, what it does well, and how he would have gone about certain plot beats differently. For the main topic, John prompts a deep dive into one of his favorite by-chance obscure movie discoveries ever, that being the 1989 French thriller Dial Code Santa Claus, also known as Deadly Games in its American release. So what if it's not Christmas any more?  Horror is evergreen.  (Plus here in DC we're on probably our last snowstorm of the season on the day this comes out.)  Topics include the great less-is-more approach with the villain, the inner workings of a grenade, a lot of general gushing from John about the writing and filmmaking, and  a sobering reminder that Meet the Spartans is a movie that actually came out. Join us as we discuss some Slayer Santas with criminal tendencies! We kick things off by exploring all the different laws and regulations Santa breaks on a regular basis, from tax evasion to unlawful surveillance. Next, we dive into …And All Through the House, both the segment from the 1972 anthology film and the episode from the 1989 television series Tales from the Crypt, the ladder featuring the most menacing Larry Drake as the escaped lunatic. We also get to hear Mike's Cryptkeeper impersonation! If you've ever wanted to glue a beard and eyebrows to your face and go on a Yuletide rampage, then Christmas Evil aka You Better Watch Out from 1980, which is John Waters favorite Christmas themed film, is just for you. A Black Christmas / Friday the 13th mashup, To All a Goodnight. 1984's Silent Night, Deadly Night also gets a lengthy, in-depth analysis, just in time for GARBAGE DAY! The film with many names that the ripped off as the basis for Home Alone, Dial Code Santa Claus aka Game Over features a Slayer Santa and a young French Rambo. Wrapping it all up, we get silly with the horrible Silent Night remake from 2012, which was partially inspired by the tragic real life Covina Massacre on Christmas Eve in 2008, where Bruce Pardo crashed the party of his in-laws and killed 9 members of his ex-wife's family dressed in a custom made Santa suit before torching their house with a homemade flamethrower that he brought with him wrapped as a present. George loves Home Alone. It is the first movie we have found for which he had childhood nostalgia. So we revisited it so he could see the movie through the eyes of a movie watcher. Will it be better? Will it be worse? Will he find new depth in old characters? Tune in to find out. Then we have to address the elephant in the room... Home Alone is a ripoff of a French movie from the year before. Or at least, that is what the rumor mill would indicate. Is it really a simple ripoff? Are we dealing with more a "Halloween borrowing scenes from a bunch of gialli" situation? Or is the internet awash with a bunch of uninspired copycat baloney? We dive deep into Home Alone and Deadly Games to find out! Deadly Games (AKA Dial Code Santa Claus, AKA 36-15 Code Père Noël, AKA Game Over, AKA Tödliche Nacht) is currently available to stream on Shudder and was recently received on a 4k UHD disc by Vinegar Syndrome. It is totally worth watching and about halfway through the episode we'll give you a "stop here before you watch" warning. But the mystery of Home Alone goes deeper than Deadly Games... And we have to end this episode on a cliffhanger which will pay off in a special release this Friday (December 17) when we discuss a second influential movie (which is way more bananas than either Home Alone or Deadly Games.) Holiday Horrors returns for 2021!   John Hudson, Troy Guinn and I discuss the amazing French Christmas film DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS (1989). Although we had never even heard of this movie until Vinegar Syndrome released it on disc last year it has become a fast favorite for all three of us. It's an amalgam of horror, action and coming of age stories that manages to hit nearly every emotional beat that it targets. On Christmas Eve, ten-year-old Thomas is determined to get evidence of Santa's existence so he sets up his high-tech equipment to videotape him on his rounds. Unfortunately, the lad has accidentally gained the attention of a crazed man who dresses himself as the jolly old elf and makes the little boy the object of his homicidal curiosity. With his mother working late it is up to Thomas alone to protect his aged grandfather and stop the deadly St. Nick from killing all through the house. Who will survive? Simultaneously beautiful to look at and tensely suspenseful DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS is a worthy addition to the list of scary stories centered around the year end holidays. Filled with Christmas atmosphere and luminous visuals it checks all the boxes for candy colored feel-good sentiment but then drops its likable characters into a vicious home invasion scenario. The killer Santa's motivations are never revealed which makes his actions all the more terrifying and unpredictable. And although this film plays out a story similar to 1990's HOME ALONE, there are real consequences to violence in this movie and truly deadly stakes if Thomas fails to defeat his nearly silent adversary.   We talk about the film's production taking note of the combination of real locations and elaborate stage work. The director's ability to seamlessly meld the real and unreal allows the film to achieve some surprising moments and it's not a shock to learn he went on to do high quality work in Hollywood. We have a good time discussing this great little movie with only a few short tangents about illegal VHS tape dubbing along the way. Oh! And at one point we are interrupted by a stack of my new Blu-Rays tumbling over into my chair. Sorry. I've been too busy to put them away.   The show winds down with an email from a fan of the show and a text from another co-host. They're trying to wear me down, folks! It's French. It's Christmas. It's got a deranged Santa and a kid who has seen a lot of 80's action films. It's like "what if 'Home Alone' were infinitely @#$%ed up?" Justin and Ryan take a deep dive into a movie that feels like it's about to break as a cult classic, and features a very Bonnie Tyler Christmas song. You may know it as "3615 code Père Noël", "Deadly Games", "Game Over" or even "Dial Code: Santa Claus". But it's a frikkin' delight, this thing.

It's 36:15 Code Pere Noel, also known as Dial Code Santa Claus, or Deadly Games depending on where you find it. There is a case to be made that John Hughes stole many of his ideas for Home Alone from this film. Even if the similarities are just coincidence, this is still an absolute brainmelter from start to finish. We'll break down all the gory details, all the Home Alone similarities, and all the killer Santa motifs right here. Your Christmas is about to get cranked! Those wild Junk Food boys are at it again, holiday stylin' and profilin' three weird Xmas-Adjacent features. Featuring more incest than ever before! Up first! We start at the only sane, logical, or respectable place to start a Christmas theme show: Seeds, from 1968. Low budget auter Andy Milligan's interpretation of America's Winter Family Holiday (tm) is a grim, back-stabbing (literally) affair (literally) wherein the family members gathered to celebrate the birth of our lord end up just fucking and murdering each other instead. Plus: bad audio looping!! Next up! We flash all the way to 1989, where the top filmmakers in France were hard at work crafting the perfect film for the young hosts-to-be of Junk Food Dinner to completely miss out on for decades. It's every kid's best worst nightmare when Santa Claus comes to town except he's just some creepy homeless dude who's good at computers. We're talking of course about Deadly Games, known by a million other titles. You'll be thrilled by the Home Alone-esque defenses put up by this kid, to say nothing of his radical mullet. Finally! It's a third film: Initiation: Silent Night, Deadly Night 4, from 1990. We enjoyed the first two films, so why had we never heard anything really about this one? And it's directed by Brian Yuzna? With effects from Screaming Mad George? What in the hey now?!? "Code Pere Noel" (aka, "Dial Code Santa Claus") is the best Christmas film you've never seen or heard of. Released in France in 1989, this yuletide horror film came out a year before the similarly-themed "Home Alone," but never reached an audience in the US. We want to help change that! It's "Home Alone" meets "Rambo" meets "Silent Night, Deadly Night" meets "The Shining" meets "John Wick" with direct references from films of its era. And it's a lot of fun! Film critic Dave Canfield joins Collin and Kerry as they talk about the film's history, availability prospects and what makes it so damn special. Also, Kerry talks about "A Clockwork Orange" (1971), "VIY" (1967) and "The Haunting (1963) for the "We Just Say book" segment.

We're celebrating Christmas in May this month as El Pinchito and the Shaman are joined by special guest Vince and an entire peanut gallery of film society members to watch Dial Code Santa Claus. This is the best Christmas movie you've never heard about, as young Thomas has to defend his home against a psychotic mall Santa using a variety of improvised weapons and deadly traps! Could this be the film that inspired Home Alone? The Devil's Lettuce Film Society is a series of commentary tracks where you are invited to get high with us and watch a movie. Every month, the Shaman and El Pinchito partake in some (legal, Canadian) marijuana and heckle a random film. Just follow the in-episode instructions to synchronize this podcast episode with your copy of the movie in question, spark up a joint, and get ready to have some laughs with your new best friends. On this show, we're watching... DIAL CODE SANTA CLAUS (1990) Director: René Manzor Writer: René Manzor Starring: Alain Lalanne, Patrick Floersheim, Louis Ducreaux, and Brigitte Fossey   Note: Please partake legally and responsibly!

2018 is coming to an end which could only mean one thing, it's time for our annual holiday episode! This year we've unwrapped a couple of movies featuring bratty kids, killer santas, home invasions and death by paint can. First up is Dial Code Santa Claus, a movie that predates Home Alone and features a young boy battling a demented Santa Claus with homemade traps and weapons. Second is Better Watch Out, a home invasion movie that takes a hard right turn and dares to show us what happens when a paint can hits someone square on the face. We also talk what we've been watching, 2019 releases, and who would win on a battle between Kevin Mccallister and the 2 kids from Dial Code Santa Claus and Better Watch Out. So sit back, spike some cocoa, and enjoy!
