Happy Halloween from the Horror Avengers, and welcome to Episode 123 — our Halloween Day Special — as we conclude a thrilling October with our ninth release this month! Packed with everything you need to fill your Halloween with filmic goodies and giggles, this episode provides enough spooky talk to be the ultimate soundtrack as a backdrop to your holiday. During this show, our hosts answer listener Captain Jack's burning question: What's on our annual Halloween watchlists? Dr. Shock and Jay of the Dead discuss the chilling horror short, Athedral (2024), with filmmaker Mack Robins (aka “Mackula”).   We're also delivering a controversial, Take Two review of Godzilla Minus One (2024). But that's not all — our crew also reviews Exhuma (2024), You'll Never Find Me (2024), and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024). This Halloween episode is haunted by these specialty segments:   – Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon takes on the cult classic The Zombie Army (1991) – Dr. Shock's Macabre Film History shares four eerie tales involving celebrity ghosts and legends. – Horror in Black and White by Mackula revisits the timeless clash of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)   Plus, we've got a unique concept discussion with Dave Zee where we test his process for making predictions about Horror movie based on their posters. Oh, and our team brings you another John Kenneth Muir group review of the ‘80s slasher, Humongous (1982). So, grab your candy and settle in for a Halloween episode to remember! Join us — it's spooky!

Broadcasting from K-I-L-L, you're listening to Dr. Shock's DEAD AIR RADIO… The interesting interludes that transition us between reviews in Episode 096 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies come from the mind of Dave “Dr. Shock” Becker. Due to some unusual circumstances in recording way back in September 2022, Dr. Shock had an open mic and free rein to bestow whatever verbal marvels his dark heart desired. Having captured those recordings, we have saved them until now, where we will indiscriminately intersperse Dave's ramblings into what Jay of the Dead calls “Dr. Shock's DEAD AIR RADIO.” In addition, we bring you 2024 Horror movie reviews of new releases like Imaginary (2024) and Amelia's Children (2024). This episode also boasts a Horror in Black and White segment by Mackula, exploring the BW version of The Mist (2007). And we have GregaMortis's pick from John Kenneth Muir's “Horror Films of the 1980s” book: Ms .45 (1981)! Join us! Here is another great episode from Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts! During Episode 052, your nine Horror hosts — Jay of the Dead, Dr. Shock, Gillman Joel, Mister Watson, Dr. Walking Dead, GregaMortis, Mackula, Ron Martin and Dave Zee — bring you some exciting Horror movie discussions. For instance, we have a couple of different takes on Brandon Cronenberg's Infinity Pool (2023); a very fair and measured GregaMortis review of Children of the Corn (2023); Jay of the Dead and Mackula's controversial discussion about the “monstrous” nature of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods' (A Quiet Place) dinosaur film, 65 (2023); Dave Zee's hidden-gem sleeper, a BET original, The Reading (2023); and Rebecca Hall's creeper, Resurrection (2022)! In addition, we have a couple of host Specialty Segments, including Horror in Black and White by Mackula: Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948); the always controversial and triggering Horror Myth-Busting With Ron Martin: Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985); Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon: Offerings (1989); and last but not least, Dr. Shock's Horror Blu-ray Corner: And of course, we have our Main Event for you: Dave Zee's pick from John Kenneth Muir's “Horror Films of the 1970s” book, Hide and Go Shriek (1988)! Audio Fiction Trailers: A Cambridge Geek Podcast

Reality is not what it used to be. After consensus reality shatters, and humanity evacuates to mysterious sanctuaries known as smart houses, a group of survivors navigate the uncertain future of the Quantum-sphere. John Kenneth Muir, award-winning author of Exploring Space: 1999 and Horror Films of the 1970s, brings to life a unique vision of humanity's future. Enter The House Between, and discover a world in which quantum mechanics, the many-worlds theory, Everett branches, human mutation, dark matter, and artificial intelligence shape and inform the everyday reality of all people, everywhere. Six survivors, cast out from sanctuary, find shelter on a seemingly abandoned farm. There, they explore parallel lives, discover hidden secrets, and witness the birth of a strange and mysterious child; a child who may represent the next stage of human evolution. Meanwhile, a sinister cult leader, known only as Father, launches an apocalyptic campaign designed to bring about a terrible agenda; to impose, by force, a singular vision of reality on an infinitely diverse Quantum-sphere. Also released under the baffling but evocative title The Salute of the Jugger, this is the strangest post-apocalyptic sports movie you'll ever see. Rutger Hauer, Joan Chen and Vincent D'onofrio star in this tale of ambition, despair and beating people up over a dog's skull. John Kenneth Muir called it “the Rocky of the dystopian genre,” and that's about the best capsule summary you can get.Adam and Aidan talk about its resemblances to Mad Max, the intricacies of The Game and its players (known as Juggers), and the elusive extended cut that adds several context-changing minutes at the end of the film. So skip your Rollerball. Do not go Beyond Thunderdome. And toss that ancient VHS copy of Robot Jox. The Blood of Heroes is here to kick your legs out from under you, whip you with a chain and steal your dog skull from your very hands. Listen below or find us on your podcast thingy of choice.

John Kenneth Muir is an expert on Space: 1999 but what does he think of the controversial Year Two? What classic toy has he kept in excellent condition since childhood? How did his early storytelling efforts with an 8mm film camera lead to late nights spent writing Space: 1999 story reviews? These projects would inspire his first non-fiction book "Exploring Space: 1999." A quick primer on what John has learned about the art and the business of writing about film and TV is revealed in this week's interview! What's your favorite Horror movie? Is it the one where the typically comedic actor plays a dead serious role of a father whose wife and children are stuck with him in another country where violence and anarchy have erupted, threatening their lives for certain death if they find no escape? Or is your favorite scary movie the one where the large, quiet, seemingly unstoppable monster from the future comes and hunts down and exterminate a young woman, killing several others in his path one by one, until the young lady ends up being the final girl to face him? Or is your new favorite scary movie the “requel” called Scream (2022)? If so, you're in luck because in Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, Episode 002, Jay and his suspicious, usual suspect cohorts Dave “Dr. Shock” Becker, The Gillman Joel Robertson and Mister Watson do their best to take a stab at dancing around a spoiler-free review of Scream (2022), but alas, to no avail. So, make sure you see the new movie before you listen to our review! And of course, also in Episode 002 we have Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop's segment, The Dead Zone, where he discusses the grave importance and viral influence of his all-time favorite zombie film, George Romero's Dawn of the Dead (1978)”. Of course, the other four hosts bring you their individual Specialty Segments, which include Mister Watson's Horror Hierarchy, Gillman Joel's Horror Lagoon, Dr. Shock's Macabre Film History and Jay of the Dead's It Could Happen to You Horror segments! This episode also features a couple of other new-year Horror movie releases as we review The Kindred (2022), Sleep (2022) and See for Me (2022). (The last one is barely a Horror film, but Jay of the Dead will defend its inclusion here.) We also bring you reviews of some recent, 2021 Horror movies, such as The Night House (2021), Detention (2021), Jakob's Wife (2021) and a Horror short film with the benign- and innocuous-sounding title, Quiet Room Bears (2021)! And for this episode's edition of A '70s, '80s or '90s HORROR MOVIE THAT MIGHT BE NEW FOR YOU from John Kenneth Muir's “Horror Films of the 1980s Decade” book, your hosts review William Lustig's infamous Maniac (1980). John Kenneth Muir has been writing about film and television for more than twenty-five years. His published works range in subject matter from the horror films of various decades and books focused on individual movie directors to in-depth tomes about several different science fiction television series. His first published book was about a much maligned Gerry Anderson produced science fiction show from the 1970's called Space: 1999. The two seasons of that show have recently been released on Blu-Ray by Scream Factory, reigniting my interest in engaging with its highs and lows. Forgotten by most but beloved by many Space: 1999 has always been an odd series that is somewhat difficult for a broad audience to embrace, but its finer points are extraordinary, its special effects are superb and the production rarely lacked ambition. It is a television program ripe for rediscovery even in this age of endless streaming possibilities.   Mr. Muir and I discuss the show from the perspective of a novel he wrote several years ago that uses the first season episode ‘Space Brain' as a starting point. Along the way we talk about our own history with Space: 1999 and how our opinions have changed over time. The stark differences between the first and second season are debated and we certainly engage in the age-old conversation about favorite and least favorite episodes. The scientific implausibility inherent in the show's set-up are hashed over with a number of details explained about how various writers acknowledged the biggest one within the body of their scripts. We discuss the philosophical approach taken by the show's creators and how it differs from what people expected from sci-fi TV in the 70's – and possibly today. We do get off track at one point and talk about a few horror movies, but we are soon back onto MoonBase Alpha – I promise!  If you have anything to say about Space: 1999 or any other subject we talk about in the show thebloodypit@gmail.com is the place to send your emails. We'll be thrilled to hear from you. Thank you for listening to the podcast.

With the release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice two weeks ago (read my thoughts here), Batman has made his triumphant return to movie screens after an interminable interregnum of...just a few years, actually. As it turns out, audiences can't go too long without DC Comics' Dark Knight Detective showing up to beat up baddies and right wrongs on big screen and small. But what is it about Batman that keeps folks coming back again and again? To unpack that question, I'm joined by pop culture historian John Kenneth Muir, author of The Encyclopedia of Superheroes on Film and Television, to discuss his own history with Batman, his thoughts on the many incarnations of the Caped Crusader, from the movie serials in the 1940s to the 1960s television series to the various feature films over the years, and answer whether Batman truly is forever. It's a long-ranging conversation that goes deep and wide, and you can listen to it via the embed below, or via iTunes, Stitcher Radio, or TuneIn Radio. As always, send all questions or comments our way via MovieFilmPodcast@gmail.com, and don't forget to hit "like" on our Facebook page

Today's Guest: John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ, Horror Films of the 1970s, Horror Films FAQ.   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ, by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of guys who didn’t make the cut as members of The Lone Gunmen… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! When my future wife and I started living together, the first appointment TV series in our lives was ABC’s daytime soap, “All My Children.” Her addiction, not mine, but it was silly fun. We always watched TV together after work – as we do even now -- and the next series I remember us committing to in the 1990s was Fox’s long-running bit of alien abduction weirdness, “The X-Files.” We watched every episode with bated breath, sometimes amused and awed, sometimes left scratching our heads in total confusion. JOHN KENNETH MUIR podcast excerpt: "Every week, 'The X-Files' brought up these mysteries. There was an episode about the Loch Ness Monster, many episodes about UFOs. They also talked about religion, about faith and, in general, what is belief. I think that really connected with people. The writing was extremely intelligent." You can LISTEN to this interview with writer and film critic JOHN KENNETH MUIR, author of THE X-FILES FAQ, by clicking the audio player above! But – and this is important – we were always eager for the next installment. We watched all nine seasons together, worrying about Mulder’s porn addiction, his sister Samantha’s abduction, Sculley’s pregnancy, and Smoking Man’s ever impending doom. We even watched the spinoff series “Millenium” and “The Lone Gunmen” and the first feature film, Fight the Future. (We never did get around to the second, I Want to Believe.) Oh, and we followed Fox Mulder – I mean actor David Duchovny – through his uncomfortably pornographic Showtime series “Californication,” wondering when Dana Sculley – I mean actress Gillian Anderson – would star in the ultimate seductive story arc. JOHN KENNETH MUIR podcast excerpt: "Chris Carter's work ('The X-Files,' 'Millennium,' 'The Lone Gunmen,' 'Harsh Realm,' 'The After') leads itself to participation by creative people. They take his work and they create art from his art." And now “The X-Files” is returning to the small screen for a 2016 limited series that creator Chris Carter promises will give fans everything we loved about the original and more. Who better than to prepare us for the show’s return than John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About Global Conspiracy, Aliens, Lazurus Species, and Monsters of the Week. Key interview moments: • 4:10 The appeal of "The X-Files" is no mystery at all, according to FAQ author John Kenneth Muir; • 18:30 If you really think about it, Muir says, "X-Files" creator Chris Carter's work is art; • 39:05 On a completely different subject, Muir explains why his massive collection of sci-fi, fantasy and genre toys are available for his little boy to play with to his heart's content, rather than keeping them boxed up.
