Even if you're deep inside a forest, high atop a mountain, or walking on the moon; there is always some form of plastic nearby. From the buttons on your shirt, to the laces on your shoes; you are literally wearing it wherever you go. You talk into it through your phone, see through it with your glasses, breathe microscopic bits of it from the air into your lungs, and consume particles of it when you drink from some types of plastic bottles. And of course ; you can't get rid of it. Throw it in and landfill, and it will remain there, virtually unchanged, for thousands of years. Throw it in the ocean; and it will kill marine life and birds. On the plus side, there are scientists right here in Akron who are working now, with the aid of a $525 thousand dollar federal grant, to create a new kind of plastic; one that is degradable, more easily recyclable, and made from renewable materials, instead of petrochemicals. I talked to one of them this week, at the University of Akron. Dr. James Egan is a Professor in their department of Polymer Science, and Polymer Engineering, and I started our conversation with one of my pet peeves about plastic. You need to put your garbage into it or it will leak all over the place, but you hate to throw it out because you know it will just sit in a landfill forever. But maybe there's a better way…not just for your trash, but for all things made of, coated in, and suffused with plastic. Listen now.

Ayse Asatekin is an associate professor and the Steve and Kristen Remondi Faculty Fellow in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at Tufts University. She is an entrepreneurial academic that keeps her home base in academia, but has been a founding scientist and inventor on two university spinouts in the water sector, the most recent of which, ZwitterCo, just raised $6M to continue commercializing their technology to use zwitterions to coat membranes that are resistant to fouling and can treat waste streams with fats, oils, grease and more. Ayse provided a ton of insight into conducting research with an eye towards scale and commercialization, including the importance of de-risking inventions at an early stage in anticipation of what investors and industry might ask. She spoke very candidly about her past experiences in spinning out technologies, what she has learned, what she would advise young inventors considering doing the same, the importance of the team, and much more. It's an encouraging episode for any listeners that want to invent for commercialization but still remain in academia, dedicated to research. Enjoy! More about Ayse Ayse Asatekin received her bachelor's degrees in chemical engineering and chemistry from the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. She went on to receive her Ph.D. in chemical engineering through the Program in Polymer Science and Technology (PPST) at MIT. She pursued her post-doctoral work with Prof. Karen K. Gleason, also at MIT. She co-founded Clean Membranes, Inc., a start-up company that commercialized the polyacrylonitrile-based membrane technology that she began developing during her doctoral research, and worked as its Principal Scientist before joining the Tufts faculty in 2012. Novel membrane technologies developed in her lab are currently being commercialized at ZwitterCo, Inc., where she serves as the Senior Scientific Advisor. She is the recipient of the NSF CAREER Award, Massachusetts Clean Energy Council's Catalyst Award, and the Turkish American Scientists and Scholars Young Scholar Award. Her research interests are in developing novel membranes for clean water and energy-efficient separations. She is also interested in multi-functional membranes, controlling surface chemistry for biomedical applications, polymer science, and energy storage. Jumped from there to the abrasives business. And then, most recently, for the last six years, I've been in the Medical Materials and Technologies group, part of our Medical Solutions division. In those six years, I've primarily been developing solutions for stick to skin. And was hired into the group just as this concept of wearables came, started pounding on our door. And it didn't start with a knock, I swear. It went from nothing to a pounding. It's like the industry needs this. And it's been a very interesting six

City-Sized Swarms of Locusts Are Annihilating Crops in East Africa and Middle East (0:32)Guest: Quinn Mecham, Professor of Political Science, BYUWhile the world deals with the coronavirus pandemic, a plague of locusts is swarming across East Africa and the Middle East. The locusts are devouring crops and their numbers are multiplying rapidly. It really is like the book of Exodus come to life – but it's not landing on the front pages of newspapers in America. When Invasive Species Stand in for Extinct Animals in an Ecosystem (18:17)Guest: Erick Lundgren, PhD Student, Centre for Compassionate Conservation, University of Technology SydneyHippos are native to Africa. But there's a thriving population of the lumbering plant-eaters in Colombia on the former estate of drug lord Pablo Escobar. The hippos were part of his private zoo and after Escobar's death in 1993, they were left to fend for themselves. Now they've moved into Colombia's main river and may number around 100. This is the classic example of an invasive species setting up shop in a place it doesn't belong – and usually it's bad news. Just look at Florida's python problem. But these hippos might be a case of helping the ecosystem because they behave a little like some of the ancient creatures that used to roam this part of Colombia. Should I Be Wearing a Mask When I Go Outside? (33:59)Guest: Arnold Monto MD, Professor of Epidemiology, University of Michigan School of Public Health. For weeks, US health officials have been telling us not to wear masks in public unless you're already infected with COVID-19. But now both the CDC is considering changing that recommendation to say that a basic face mask is a good idea for everyone – even if it's just a bandana tied around your face, since masks are nearly impossible to find in stores now. Some Asian countries have encouraged face masks throughout the pandemic. Have we been putting ourselves at risk this whole time? US Presidents Weren't Supposed to Have Cabinets, But They All Do. Here's Why. (50:40)Guest: Lindsay M. Chervinsky, Historian, White House Historical Association, Author of “The Cabinet: George Washington and the Creation of an American Institution”During the coronavirus pandemic, President Trump has relied on a close group of advisors to guide the response. We've seen them standing beside him during daily briefings: the Vice President; Treasury Secretary; Secretary of Health and Human Services; the Surgeon General and the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. We also know that behind-the-scenes, President Trump has reached out to a range of friends, business leaders, media personalities and celebrities for advice.  Presidents need advisers they can trust in a crisis. So, perhaps it will surprise you to learn that the US Constitution doesn't actually provide for a Presidential cabinet. In fact, the idea that a president would consult with a small group of advisers was really upsetting to many of the founding fathers. And yet, every US president since Washington has had one. The Physics of a Bird's Nests (1:27:49)Guest: Dr Hunter King, Assistant Professor, Department of Polymer Science, University of AkronI have short curly hair and when I wake up in the morning it looks like birds have nested on my head. Except that birds' nests aren't just tangled and haphazard. They're actually an impressive feat of engineering that physicist Hunter King is trying to figure out so we can create new materials and building techniques.

Plastic Bags and the DNA in our cells are both polymers, very long molecules ubiquitous in nature and in their synthetic form, in materials like polythene, perspex and polystyrene. Professor Dame Julia Higgins has spent a lifetime researching the structure and movement of polymeric material. Trained as a physicist, Dame Julia was one of the early researchers in polymer science and throughout her career worked alongside chemists and engineers. No surprise then that she was the first woman to become both a Fellow of the Royal Society and of the Royal Academy of Engineering. In the 1960s with other young researchers she worked at the Harwell Atomic Energy Research Centre in Oxfordshire, one of the first people to use neutron scattering as a technique to investigate how polymer molecules move. Emeritus Professor of Polymer Science and former Principal at the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College, London, Professor Higgins tells Jim Al-Khalili how she used her influence as a leading academic to improve representation of women in top posts in science and medicine.
