He then joined the University of Washington faculty and is now professor of Bioengineering. He is also Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, WATER, convener of the Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, and Executive Director of the Institute for Venture Science. His interests have ranged broadly, from biological motion and cell biology to the interaction of biological surfaces with aqueous solutions. His 1990 book, Muscles and Molecules: Uncovering the Principles of Biological Motion, won an “Excellence Award”from the Society for Technical Communication. His 2001 book, Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life, and his newest book, The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid,and Vapor won that Society's “Distinguished Award,”their highest distinction. The latter book went on to receive the World Summit Excellence Award. Pollack received an honorary doctorate in 2002 fromUral State University in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and was more recently named an Honorary Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and foreign member and Academician of the Srpska Academy. He received the Biomedical Engineering Society's Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2002. In 2008, his colleagues chose him as the recipient of his university's highest annual distinction: the UW Faculty Lecturer Award. Pollack is a Founding Fellow of the American Instituteof Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of both the American Heart Association and the BiomedicalEngineering Society. He received an NIH Director's Transformative R01 Award. He was the 2012 recipient of the Prigogine Medal for thermodynamics of dissipative systems,and in 2014 he received the Scientific Excellence Award from the World Academy of Neural Therapy, as well as the Dinsdale Prize from the Society for Scientific Exploration.He has presented two TEDx talks on water. In 2015, he won the BrandLaureate Award, previouslybestowed on notables such as Nelson Mandela, Hillary Clinton and Steve Jobs. Send us a textDr. Sean Gibbons, Ph.D. is Associate Professor at the Institute for Systems Biology ( ISB - https://isbscience.org/people/sean-gibbons-phd/?tab=biography ) where his lab investigates how the structure and composition of evolving ecological networks of microorganisms change across environmental gradients, with a specific focus on how ecological communities in the gut change and adapt to individual people over their lifespans (i.e. host genotype, host development and host behavior) and how these changes impact human health ( https://gibbons.isbscience.org/ ). His lab develops computational and experimental tools for investigating host-associated microbial communities to explore the interactions between ecology, evolution and ecosystem function, applying these insights to develop personalized interventions for improving human health and well-being.Dr. Gibbons received his PhD in biophysical sciences from the University of Chicago in 2015, dual-advised by Jack Gilbert and Maureen Coleman. His graduate work focused on using microbial communities as empirical models for testing ecological theory. Dr. Gibbons completed his postdoctoral training in Eric Alm's laboratory in the Department of Biological Engineering at MIT from 2015-2018. His postdoctoral work focused on developing techniques to quantify individual-specific eco-evolutionary dynamics within the human gut microbiome.Dr. Gibbons was awarded a Fulbright Graduate Fellowship to study microbiology and synthetic biology at Uppsala University in Sweden, where he earned a master's degree in 2010. New World Screwworm In Cattle New World Screwworm: What you Need to Know On November 22, 2024, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Mexico informed the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) of a confirmed case of New World screwworm (NWS, Cochliomyia hominivorax). This alarming detection poses a serious threat to livestock and wildlife in North America. Here's what you need to know about this devastating pest and its implications. What Is New World Screwworm? New World screwworm is a highly destructive pest that affects livestock, other warm-blooded animals, and occasionally humans. NWS larvae infest animals through open wounds or mucous membranes, feeding on living tissue rather than dead tissue or carrion. If left untreated, infestations can be fatal. Key Facts About New World Screwworm: NWS is endemic to Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and parts of South America. It has been moving northward since 2023, spreading from Panama to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and now Mexico. U.S. Measures to Prevent NWS Spread To protect livestock and wildlife in the United States, APHIS is taking immediate action: Import Restrictions: Livestock imports, including equines, from Mexico are temporarily restricted. Horses originating from or residing in Mexico within 60 days prior to export will need to comply with stringent import protocols. Established Protocols: Pre-export treatment and examination. Treatment and examination upon arrival. A 7-day quarantine in an approved permanent import facility. These protocols follow the guidelines outlined in eCFR 9 CFR 93.308 and VSG 13424.1. Why Awareness Matters Illegally imported equines and stray animals crossing the border could introduce NWS into the United States. It is crucial for those handling livestock and pets to be vigilant. Signs of Screwworm Infestation: Draining or enlarging wounds. Signs of discomfort such as head shaking or irritated behavior. Presence of screwworm larvae (maggots) or eggs. Screwworm eggs are creamy-white and often found near the edges of wounds. Infestations commonly occur in: Navels of newborn animals. Nasal or eye openings. Genitalia and branding or dehorning wounds. What to Do If You Suspect Screwworm If you notice signs of infestation: Immediately contact your local accredited veterinarian, state animal health official, or APHIS veterinarian. Regularly inspect your pets and livestock, especially if they have wounds or show signs of discomfort. Conclusion The detection of New World screwworm in Mexico underscores the importance of vigilance in safeguarding livestock and wildlife. By adhering to import restrictions and monitoring animals closely, we can help prevent the spread of this devastating pest. Cattle & Agriculture Industry News Scientists Turn To AI To Reduce Cow Methane Researchers are considering using generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) protocols in order to develop new solutions to reduce methane emissions from cows. A team of scientists at USDA's Agricultural Research Service Livestock Nutrient Management Research Unit and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Iowa State University are using AI to sift through large computational models to develop new approaches to managing the methane emissions. The current focus involves the discovery of a group of compound molecules that can inhibit methane production in the largest of a cow's four stomach compartments. One effective molecule has been proven to reduce enteric methane production by up to 98%. AI also may fast-forward the laboratory research process and possibly address the potential costs of launching additional research, according to the scientists. Okay, so I'll just say right at the top that my guest today is NOT a parenting expert. He is, however, a neurodivergent researcher, educator, author, and thinker who has some fascinating things to share about helping our kids energize their brains, spark ideas, and ignite action. Dr. Jeff Karp was that young kid who struggled greatly in school because of his learning disabilities, but when a tutor during the summer after second grade asked him this question – how did you think about that? – everything for him changed. He began to be more self-reflective. By thinking about thinking and how he approached learning, he was able to explore and create tools and systems to help him reach his goals both in school and in daily life. Jeff is still thinking about thinking today, and shares his ideas in his fascinating book, LIT: Life Ignition Tools: Use Nature's Playbook to Energize Your Brain, Spark Ideas, and Ignite Action. After I read his book, I wanted to bring him on the show because he embodies so much of what we talk about here at Tilt – encouraging our kids to understand how their brain works, get curious about their own strengths and gifts, and figure out ways to “hack themselves” so they can design lives that allow them to play to those strengths. As a child, Jeff developed ways to navigate school and life that were based on his curiosity, passion, creativity, and connection to nature. In April, Netflix started streaming Hack Your Health, an informative documentary about the gut microbiome, gut health, and the science of eating. In this collaborative event between Town Hall Seattle and the Institute for Systems Biology, Hack Your Health Director Anjali Nayar will sit down with gut microbiome specialist Dr. Sean Gibbons, a scientific advisor on the film, to discuss the project, interesting developments in microbiome research, and much more. Anjali Nayar is an Indian-Canadian director, former climate scientist, and tech founder. Anjali's newest film, a Netflix Original called Hack Your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut is streaming on Netflix, and her fantasy short Closer has over 5 million views and won the 2022 Prism Prize Audience Award (Canada's top music video awards). In this episode I interview Dr. Gerald Pollack. Gerald Pollack received his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He then joined the University of Washington faculty and is now professor of Bioengineering. He is also Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, WATER, convener of the Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, and Executive Director of the Institute for Venture Science. His interests have ranged broadly, from biological motion and cell biology to the interaction of biological surfaces with aqueous solutions. His 1990 book, Muscles and Molecules: Uncovering the Principles of Biological Motion, won an “Excellence Award” from the Society for Technical Communication. His 2001 book, Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life, and his newest book, The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor won that Society's “Distinguished Award,” their highest distinction. The latter book went on to receive the World Summit Excellence Award. Pollack received an honorary doctorate in 2002 from Ural State University in Ekaterinburg, Russia, and was more recently named an Honorary Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and foreign member and Academician of the Srpska Academy. He received the Biomedical Engineering Society's Distinguished Lecturer Award in 2002. In 2008, his colleagues chose him as the recipient of his university's highest annual distinction: the UW Faculty Lecturer Award. Pollack is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of both the American Heart Association and the Biomedical Engineering Society. He received an NIH Director's Transformative R01 Award. He was the 2012 recipient of the Prigogine Medal for thermodynamics of dissipative systems, and in 2014 he received the Scientific Excellence Award from the World Academy of Neural Therapy, as well as the Dinsdale Prize from the Society for Scientific Exploration. Purdue University researchers have developed a biosensor technology aimed at revolutionizing food safety in agriculture. This innovation stems from a collaboration with the Center for Produce Safety, which sought to create a rapid, user-friendly risk assessment tool for growers of fresh produce, including leafy greens. "Current tests used in the field are slow, lab-based, and require trained personnel," explains Mohit Verma, associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and one of the researchers on the project. "Our goal was to provide growers with a quick and easy-to-use tool that offers rapid, reliable results." The solution lies in biosensors, which detect biological molecules and provide easily readable outputs. The technology employs Loop-Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP), a method similar to PCR but simpler as it operates at a single temperature. How do we take a huge chronic disease burden like Lyme disease or long COVID or even long flu and make it so personal that we simply can't ignore it anymore? That's today's big question and my guest is Dr. Mikki Tal, an immunoengineer and a principal scientist at MIT.Dr. Tal leads the Tal Research Group within the Department of Biological Engineering, and also serves as the Associate Scientific Director of the Center for Gynepathology Research. Mikki is working to identify the connections between infections and chronic diseases.I've written a bit recently about the lessons we finally need to learn about post viral and bacterial health issues, the societal and medicinal and health and economic issues and improving our baseline of wellness and community health, so that we don't suffer from those quite as much.These things are very real, we've known about them for a very long time and the compounding effects of chronic diseases are just going to continue add up the longer we ignore them, and we gaslight people. Dr Paul Malchesky, with a Master's degree in Chemistry and a Doctorate in Engineering, has been working with apheresis since the 1970's. This is a blood filtration or ‘cleaning' therapy we offer at Neuroveda Health as plasmapheresis (also called plasma exchange, PLEX and TPE (total or therapeutic plasma exchange)). There's been a lot of recent excitement regarding treatment of Long-COVID and as a ‘biohack' for longevity, but the truth is that it's been nearly half a century since the FDA approved this therapy for auto-immune and neurodegenerative conditions. Multiple studies have found that increasing course structure reduces equity gaps and provides benefits to all students. In this episode, Justin Shaffer joins us to discuss several ways to increase structure in STEM classes. Justin is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and a Teaching Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering and in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines. He has taught a variety of both small and large STEM classes in multiple modalities using evidence-based approaches and has won multiple teaching awards as a result of this work. Justin is also an active researcher with 16 peer-reviewed publications and serves as the editor for four STEM education journals. He is the author of a forthcoming book on high-structure course design coming in late 2024 or early 2025 from Macmillan. Fan Yang, PhD is an Associate Professor at Stanford University with joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering joins OsteoBites to discuss her work on tissue engineering strategies for elucidating OS biology and drug discovery.Fan Yang, PhD is the founder and Director of Stanford Stem Cells and Biomaterials Engineering Laboratory, and also Co-director of Stanford NIH Biotechnology Training Program. Her research seeks to develop hydrogels with unique micro- and nano- scale properties to promote stem cell differentiation, tissue regeneration and immunomodulation, with a focus on musculoskeletal diseases. Her lab also harnesses biomaterials to create 3D cancer models with in vivo-mimicking phenotype and drug responses. Such 3D models could enable discovering novel druggable targets that would otherwise be missed using conventional 2D culture, and enable high-throughput drug screening with reduced cost and time than animal models. Prior to joining Stanford, Dr. Yang received her Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University, and then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at MIT under Prof. Robert Langer. Professor Dane Wittrup attended the University of New Mexico as an undergraduate, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelors in Chemical Engineering in June, 1984. Wittrup went on to attend the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, where he worked with Prof. James Bailey on flow cytometry and segregated modeling of recombinant populations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Biology in 1988, he spent a brief time working at Amgen before becoming an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1989. He moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in September of 1999, where he is now the C.P. Dr. Pankaj Karande is an Associate Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Pankaj was trained as a chemical engineer, and his research aims to apply engineering approaches and technology to solve problems in biology and healthcare to improve the quality and quantity of human life. Projects in his lab span areas such as drug discovery, drug delivery, biomaterials, diagnostics, and more. When he's not working, Pankaj loves to cook, and experimenting with different recipes has been a great way to relieve stress. He was awarded his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Pankaj was awarded an Anna Fuller Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Oncology, and he conducted postdoctoral research in the Center for Cancer Research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining the faculty at Rensselaer. Pankaj has received a variety of awards and honors in his career, including the Excellence in Classroom Instruction Award and the Outstanding Teaching Award from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also received the Alzheimer's Association New Investigator Research Award, the Goldhirsh Brain Tumor Research Award, and a Bronze Edison Award in the Best New Product in Science and Medical Category. Women in menopause get a lot of nutrition and fitness advice. Some of it is sound. Some less so. Quite a bit of it is downright predatory. That is why the best nutrition and fitness advice for menopausal women is often not about grams of protein or hours of exercise, but rather a hard look at our own attitudes and beliefs about how we eat (or don't eat) and move our bodies. What narratives form our nutrition and fitness foundations? Are they even true? This week we dig deep into those narratives–and how to change them–with Meredith Root, co-founder of Tactic Functional Nutrition and Tactic Functional Fitness, both of which are grounded in empathy and behavioral change.Meredith Root has a B.S. in Biological Engineering and 6 years experience in biopharmacetutical process development. She is an active member of the Canadian and American Society for Nutrition and contributing writer for The Morning Chalk Up. With a focus on serving our members and partnering with our network of global grain professionals, GEAPS partnered with Victam International to host our first ever event in South America! The event took place October 3-5, 2023, in São Paulo, Brazil. Victam LatAm offered top tier networking and conferencing held by GEAPS and other relevant partners in feed and grain processing/handling industries. This was the very first Victam event in Latin America. In addition to the expansive trade show floor, GEAPS offered 2 days of education. Jim Lenz sat down with Carlos Campabadal. He was one of the featured speakers of the GEAPS educational sessions VICTAM. Carlos shares his experiences and observations along with inquiries about maintaining grain quality in tropical environments. About the guest: Carlos Campabadal is a faculty member of the Department of Grain Science and Industry at Kansas State University. An outreach specialist at the International Grains Program Institute (IGP), his work focuses on grain storage, quality and processing, U.S. grain grading and export systems and feed manufacturing. He also leads the Stored Product Protection Research group and is part of the Feed Technology group of the Department of Grain Science and Industry where he also serves as the State Extension Leader. He is very active in international development with several projects with USAID in Guatemala and Honduras for the Reduction of Postharvest Loss Innovation Lab in Ethiopia for the Appropriate Scale Mechanization Consortium of the Sustainable Intensification Innovation Lab, and with USDA in Ghana for a Food for Progress project focusing the redeveloping of the poultry industry. He was born and raised in Costa Rica, Central America. Carlos obtained his doctoral degree in Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Purdue University. His research topic was focused on non-chemical alternatives for stored product protection. At Purdue University, he was part of the Post-Harvest Education and Research Center (PHERC). He earned a master's degree in agricultural engineering at the University of Illinois. Before, his graduate studies, he worked at his family feed mill as a process and maintenance engineer. He has previous experience in animal farm management in beef cattle and swine farms. He has traveled throughout Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Europe as a technical consultant, translator and speaker about grain storage. He has presented his research at several scientific and professional conferences and in scientific journals. He is involved in his family feed manufacturing and farm operation business. Dr. Wes Lowe is a repeat guest and an assistant professor from the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at MSU. Bernie gets into Purdue's growth story in the years he's served at the university, their big focus on driving innovation and entrepreneurship and looking beyond agbioscience in the College of Agriculture. He talks about his deep connection to engineering, Purdue's unique strength in partnerships and bringing those together to grow and accelerate meaningful connections. How will Purdue continue working to meet the talent needs of a growing agbioscience industry? Bernie gets into the sector's pace of change and helping students to adapt to that as they enter the workforce. Dr. Jennifer Wilcox is an Associate Professor in Chemical and Biological Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines and an Investigator within the Clean Energy Conversions Laboratory there. The research in Jen's group focuses on carbon capture and trace metal pollution. On the carbon capture side, she tries to better understand and reduce CO2 emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants. In terms of trace metals, the most common source of trace metals like mercury in the fish we eat is burning coal in coal-fired power plants. Jen's research examines how to capture trace metals and reduce their emission into the environment. Outside of science, Jen keeps busy spending time with her family including her husband and daughter. She also loves being active outdoors through hiking, running, and bicycling. She received her bachelor's degree in mathematics from Wellesley College and her PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Arizona. She served on the faculty at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and at Stanford University before joining the faculty at the Colorado School of Mines. Jen has received numerous awards and honors, including an Army Research Office Young Investigator Award, an American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund Young Investigator Award, and an NSF CAREER Award. She also was awarded the Stern Award for Distinguished Paper from the Journal of the Air and Waste Management Association. Jen is with us today to tell us all about her life and science.

Today's episode is featuring Dr. Gerald Pollack and his breakthrough scieticifc discovery of Exclusion Zone (EZ) water: why we want to have a lot of it in our cells, how infrared heat can generate more EZ water in our bodies! Dr. Pollack received his PhD in biomedical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. He then joined the University of Washington faculty and is now professor of Bioengineering. He is also Founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal, WATER, convener of the Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, and Executive Director of the Institute for Venture Science. His 1990 book, Muscles and Molecules: Uncovering the Principles of Biological Motion, won an “Excellence Award” from the Society for Technical Communication. His 2001 book, Cells, Gels and the Engines of Life, and his newest book, The Fourth Phase of Water: Beyond Solid, Liquid, and Vapor won that Society's “Distinguished Award,” their highest distinction. The latter book went on to receive the World Summit Excellence Award. Pollack is a Founding Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering and a Fellow of both the American Heart Association and the Biomedical Engineering Society. He received an NIH Director's Transformative R01 Award. He was the 2012 recipient of the Prigogine Medal for thermodynamics of dissipative systems, and in 2014 he received the Scientific Excellence Award from the World Academy of Neural Therapy, as well as the Dinsdale Prize from the Society for Scientific Exploration. He has presented two TEDx talks on water. And, he is included in the 2019 listing, OOOM Magazine, as one of the “World's 100 Most Inspiring People.” In 2020, he presented his work at the “Majlis” by invitation from the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, at his Royal Palace.
