Number 13 by M R James Number 13 by M R James is a spooky story of a missing room and its missing inhabitant. Including old churches, musty documents, secrets, the occult and bookish blokes rummaging around Unlucky for some, but not really for Mr Anderson though it gave him quite a shock. This story was commissioned by Gavin Critchley who kindly has allowed me to broadcast it to you all. I wonder whether this was James' own view or he is merely representing the view of his character. James was an Anglican and the protestant view of the Catholic Church was not and in some circles remains not wholly tolerant or kind. I read an article arguing that because James was so drawn to the medieval period that he must be in possession of a Catholic sensibility, in which the whole world is in some sense sacred. I am not sure this correctly represents Catholic dogma or the Medieval European World View. But it's fun to read about such things. James leaves things out. For example the red light, the dancing figure that might be a man or a woman. I think he deliberately leaves unresolved threads. I think he does the same in Story of a Disappearance And an Appearance in which we have to try to reconstruct the narrative ourselves to figure out what actually went on, rather than James spoon-feeding us the rational explanation (rational though perhaps also supernatural. The two things aren't exclusive). In this again I think he is a little like David Lynch who allows images to emerge from his subconscious and uses them leaving us to try and make sense like a Rorschach image. I'm not against, this, and I might be wrong. In the end, we might walk away from this story wondering: eh? The dancing, singing androgynous spirit, the portmanteau that vanishes and then reappears with apparently no significance. I think he just throws this weird stuff in to unsettle us. This is eerie (by Mark Fisher's definition) in that it has an agent who has a purpose, but both are obscure to us therefore unsettling us. The weird arm that reaches out is one of a string of weird arms: Grendel's arm in Beowulf, the arm that takes the baby Pryderi in the tale of Pwyll in the Mabinogi. I also heard via Jon Gower about some farmers in Carno who believed there was a house where a monstrous arm appeared. The number of windows is a clue. I take from this that there was a Room 13, but that Room 12 and Room 14 were enlarged to gobble it up. Perhaps because of its bad reputation. Nicholas Francken is a bit of a red herring. He is an occultist and I've said elsewhere that James's interest in the occult suggests he knew more about it than he lets on in common with his contemporaries, Arthur Machen, W B Yeats etc who were members of the Golden Dawn. But he leads us to believe that we are going to find Francken's body buried below the planks and then we just find some kind of occult document that no one can read. Another unresolved riddle. Covid-19 has ushered in a new era of urgent innovation and with it, a new way of working and collaborating. In this podcast, Life Sciences Hub Wales’ Deputy Chair Chris Martin hears from two people at the heart of this response. Pryderi ap Rhisiart - managing director of the Menai Science Park, M-Sparc on Anglesey - discusses the pioneering work that has been taking place there to tackle the pandemic: “The Covid pandemic meant we had to work together, pulling people from different sectors and businesses together, resulting in new innovation…. And the whole community is driving it forward. It’s been quite something to witness it and I’m proud to be in the middle of it,” said Pryderi. Amongst a number of new products which have been devised there is a device for opening doors using elbows, a police drone and a revolutionary virus-killing mask or snood. The latter was the brainchild of Paul Hope, founder of Virustatic Ltd. The snoods have been scientifically proven in laboratory tests as effective against SARS-CoV-2 at a cellular level. Since March the company has ramped up the production from a weekly run of 40,000 to 400,000 a week. Lucy Hope - Paul’s daughter - is communications director at Virustatic tells us more on the podcast: “Being in Wales and based in M-Sparc...experiencing the willingness to collaborate and innovate together because of the adversity, is like nothing we have ever experienced before.”

This double album in the Mabinogi series was recently released and The Adventure of Y Mabinogi continues because Pryderi has more tales to tell. For those who aren't familiar with the Mabinogion, It First written down in the Middle Ages by Christian Monks, and first translated into the English language by Lady Charlotte Guest in the mid 1800s. these tales are a part of the Matter of Britain itself. This is the third of four albums that will complete The Four Branches of the Mabinogi. Damh says that these tales were never meant to be written and They were passed down in generations as oral history. Damh's retelling of the tales brings back the way these stories were originally heard and shared but also includes the addition of original songs to accompany the narration, giving the telling of the tales a wonderful added dimension.

In every episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I mention "celebrating Celtic culture through music." It’s easy to miss the nuance of this mission statement. This podcast is not just about the traditional music of Ireland or Scotland. It is about all of those under-served aspects of Celtic music, and its many forms, from around the globe. It's about the fusion, the change, and the growth of the musical traditions of the Celts. So I found it disappointing to hear someone attack my guest host Susan J. E. Ritta last week for promoting the women of Celtic music and FairPle, an organization dedicated to giving Celtic women in music a voice. It's both disappointing and rather disgusting. Women are under-represented throughout the music business, including Celtic music. If you've spent ANY time studying the music business since it began, like I have, you would know this to be true. Sadly, some folks feel threatened by those who are marginalized and gain a fair footing. It happened to the Irish when they first came to American. If you have studied the history of the Celts, you will note the Celts too were marginalized. And when you belittle one marginalized group, you disgrace all of our Celtic culture. You disgrace the history and suffering the Celts endured and overcame. So let me be clear. The women of Celtic music deserve our support. If you disagree, that's your choice. But I will continue to fight for these amazing women and promote FairPle and any organization that stands up against small-minded people who refuse to change with history. So whether you're a new listener or long-time, if that's you, I wish you a fond farewell. This podcast is not for you. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Allison Walker-Elders emailed from DC: "Hi Marc,I've been meaning to write this email for weeks! During your episode # 405 (Fight Like a Celtic Woman) I was so moved by Heather Dale's song "One of Us" that I had to stop in the middle of my hour-long run and have a good cry. The song reminded me of every woman I have ever looked up to in my life, personally or academically or in my career. I don't know if it was intentional on Heather Dale's part, but I was strongly reminded of the 2016 American election-- while I didn't always agree with Secretary Clinton, she would have made a great president and I was proud that she was one of us. Remembering that feeling of pride combined with the devastation of her loss while listening to "One of Us" brought me right back to that moment in the early hours of November 9th, 2016. Thank you for everything that you do to raise up the voices of underrepresented Celtic musicians and songwriters.I especially appreciated Lady Susan's episode this past week and can't wait to listen to other episodes of her show. If I were to request anything from your show, maybe it would be a longer episode for workouts--I'll be running a marathon later this summer and plan on listening to your show while I run it in the beautiful mountains of Washington State." Thank you so much Allison for your touching response. I'm so happy the song moved you. It's become a favorite of my daughter Kenzie too. And I'm quite proud of that. You are right. There are many voices underrepresented in the Celtic community, especially from Celtic women. I know a quarterly episode is a very small contribution. But I'm proud I can add that into the world. And while I originally planned it just for 2019, I've since changed decided to extend it into the future. As for the longer workout episodes, may I should add that as a Patreon Milestone--Celtic Marathon Training. That'd be fun.

The story of the interesting childhood of Pryderi fab Pwyll, a famous prince and King from Welsh Mythology. We still have a few more Welsh tales to come, then we will move North for some more Celtic myths.
Adapted by Lucy Catherine From the Red Book of Hergest, these are the tales of the Mabinogi. Final episode of a new fantasy adventure series, based on the iconic work of medieval Welsh mythology. As war between Wales and Ireland breaks out, Pryderi, Prince of Dyfed, joins the fleet from the Kingdom of Gwynedd to rescue Princess Branwen. The ships are led by the giant King Bran the Blessed, who wades across the Irish Sea. The tales of the Mabinogi are tales of romance, tragedy, comedy and fantasy and together they form the earliest prose stories of Britain. Award-winning writer Lucy Catherine (The Master and Margherita, Being Human, Vanity Fair) gives these stories a modern flavour while remaining true to the vivid magic of Celtic mythology. Pryderi…. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the eleven stories of Celtic mythology and Arthurian romance known as The Mabinogion, most of which were told and retold for generations before being written down in C14th. Among them are stories of Pwyll and Rhiannon and their son Pryderi, of Culhwch and Olwen, of the dream of the Emperor Macsen, of Lludd and Llefelys, of magic and giants and imagined history. With common themes but no single author, they project an image of the Island of Britain before the Anglo-Saxons and Normans and before Edward I's conquest of Wales. They came to new prominence, worldwide, from C19th with the translation into English by Lady Charlotte Guest aided by William Owen Pughe.
