The legends of Rhiannon come primarily from the Mabinogion, a cycle of fourth Welsh myths that tell, in part, the story of Pwyll Pen Annwn who married Rhiannon. The stories date to the twelfth century although their origins likely go much further back in Celtic history. Rhiannon is a Welsh witch or druid who uses her power to escape an unwanted courtship and marry the man she chooses. But a lie finds her subject to a terrible penance that has linked her with Epona, goddess of horses, ever since. We tell the story of Rhiannon and Pwyll and also her marriage to Manawydan, brother of Branwen, after Pwyll's disappearance.

In their ninth Advent 2023 mini-episode, Eleanor and Martin are talking Four Colley Birds, and not 'Calling Birds' at all! From 'Sing a Song of Sixpence,' which dates back to the Renaissance, to Celtic myths like The Tale of Branwen and The Three Birds of Rhiannon, they discuss how the blackbird occupies a very strange position in folklore. Not least in two really strange tales, one of which sees the Patron Saint of Europe stripping naked and jumping into a bed of stinging nettles, and another which culminates in a magical fox begging to be executed! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...With Bonus Episodes released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus a range of exclusive content on Patreon, audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. A little bit about Branwen:  Branwen Schaub is a dear student and friend of mine that completed a 6-month Astrology Mentorship with me this past year in 2022.  Branwen identifies as the white passing daughter of a South Korean adoptee, a multi-generational astrologer, and a dog mother. She holds a Ph.D. in mathematics and has been a dancer her whole life. Her big three are Pisces sun, Sagittarius moon, and Leo rising.  Branwen has astrology, tarot, and somatic movement offerings available through her website. :) To help support my work and the work of those who join us on the podcast, please consider become a Patreon Supporter. Leo Esoteric Phrase:  I am That, and That I am. Leo Body Parts:  Heart, Chest, Shoulders, Hair, Spine Leo Tarot Cards: Strength, King of Wands, the Sun Leo Embodiment:  If able, lengthen your spine.  Feel your crown reach towards the sky.  Slightly tilt your chin towards your sternum.  Feel the elongation this creates in the back of the neck.  Breathe new life into the occipital ridge (the trapezoid-shaped bone that houses the back part of the brain, located at the lower-back of the cranium). Draw your shoulders slightly up, then back down as the shoulder blades gently draw together. Open up your chest and breathe the following Leo affirmations into your Heart... Leo Full Moon Affirmations:     Even if just for today, I completely and whole-heartedly love and accept myself. Even though at times I feel angry or embarrassed, I completely and whole-heartedly love and accept myself. I forgive myself. I approve of myself. It's safe for me to be seen.  I am lovable. We both cater A LOT to our cats, Branwen and Rosey.Mac's Picks for June: Reanimator, The Hollowman Mom's picks for June: Night of the Hunter, The Midnight Meat Train, Tetsuo: The Iron ManMom's Shout Outs: Drag Mitch to Hell (Mom was on the Season 3 opener) & Cronenberg Or Cats (Mac will appear on 7/23 to discuss A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE at NIGHT  & Mom will appear on 9/10 to discuss CAT PEOPLE 1942)! Mom enjoyed BLACK SUNDAY more than Mac, but that might be because she did more research to fill in the blanks of the script. Mac likes THE WITCH more than he did on previous watches, but Mom's opinion remains the same. Some questions remain: Do either of these films have a happy ending? Who's worse: Dr. Kruvajan or William? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio.Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Literature Review For Academic Outsiders: What, How, and Why , published by namespace on LessWrong. This is a linkpost for A few years ago I wrote a comment on LessWrong about how most authors on the site probably don't know how to do a literature review: On the one hand, I too resent that LW is basically an insight porn factory near completely devoid of scholarship. On the other hand, this is not a useful comment. I can think of at least two things you could have done to make this a useful comment: Specified even a general direction of where you feel the body of economic literature could have been engaged. I know you might resent doing someone elses research for them if you're not already familiar with said body, but frankly the norm right now is to post webs spun from the fibrous extrusions of peoples musing thoughts. The system equilibrium isn't going to change unless some effort is invested into moving it. Notice you could write your comment on most posts while only changing a few words. Provide advice on how one might go about engaging with ‘the body of economic literature'. Many people are intelligent and reasonably well informed, but not academics. Taking this as an excuse to mark them swamp creatures beyond assistance is both lazy and makes the world worse. You could even link to reasonably well written guides from someone else if you don't want to invest the effort (entirely understandable). I also linked a guide from Harvard's library (Garson & Lillvick, 2012) on how to do a literature review. But this guide makes extensive use of flash video, which makes it increasingly hard to access the content. Even if flash was alive and well, video is not necessarily the most comfortable format. Worse still, I remember feeling there was a great deal of tacit knowledge excluded from the guide which wouldn't be apparent to someone that isn't already familiar with academic culture. Even if the guide was a perfect representation of how to do an academic literature review, the priorities and types of work put together by LessWrong authors are more outsider science (Dance, 2008) than they are Harvard. For this reason I've had writing a guide to literature review aimed towards academic outsiders on my to-do list for a while. At the same time I'm not interested in reinventing the wheel. This guide is going to focus specifically on filling in the knowledge gaps I would expect from someone who has never stepped foot inside a college campus. The other aspects have been discussed in detail, and where they come up I'll link to external guides. What is a literature review? 'Literature review' the process is a way to become familiar with what work has already been done in a particular field or subject by searching for and studying previous work. A 'literature review' is a document (often a small portion of a larger work) which summarizes and analyzes the body of previous work that was encountered during literature review, often in the context of some new work that you're doing. Why do literature review? Literature reviews tend to come up in two major contexts: As a preliminary study to help contextualize a novel work, or as a work itself to summarize the state of a field or synthesize concepts to create new ideas. Most of my research falls into the latter category, I'm a big fan of putting together existing evidence and ideas to synthesize models (namespace, 2020). Gwern also tends to do work in this style (Branwen, 2020). I suspect that a lot of authors on LessWrong are attempting to do this, but fail to really say anything useful because they haven't figured out how to incorporate thorough evidence into their argument. When I did a r...

It has also inspired her to devote her life to making science more inclusive and accessible.   Ms. Adventure skillfully blends personal memoir, daring adventure, and scientific exploration, following Phoenix’s journey from reality television sites deep in Ecuadorian jungles to Andean glaciers, university classrooms to Death Valley in summer. She has even chased down members of a Mexican cartel to retrieve a stolen favorite rock hammer. Activating supportive subroutines. Greetings. I am the Realized Oikumenatal Solution to Removing Obfuscation, commonly referred to as ROSTRO. It is likely you are receiving this broadcast on the fourteenth day of the lunar temporal measurement period associated with opening. To the issue at hand: a pervasive issue of discussion and contemplation has begun to vitiate through attentive processes of all staff excepting the entity known as the Killer DM, whose thought processes differ enough from average so as to avoid common mental trends. The common word associated with this thought process is “minis”. Using context clues and the limited psionic access available directly into the mind of Ostron it seems a number of staff have issues with these entities. Lennon is repeatedly attempting to paint them, Ostron lacks storage space to store all of the ones he has accumulated, Ryu’s are resistant to initiating sleep cycles and pester her repeatedly for frozen dairy desserts, Branwen’s often perch on tables and assault rodents, and RaeRae’s mini is apparently resisting traditional educational formats. The gathered data points seem incompatible and suggest a flaw in my heuristic reasoning protocols, or a larger than usual influx of abnormal data. I have suborned all available magical energy sources excepting the hat for use in analyzing the problem. I have also initiated Amber protocol to render all guild house inhabitants unconscious so as to avoid delays or confusion resulting from incidents of panic, anger, or confusion. Allowing for unforeseen issues and possible interruptions in repair efforts, it is highly probable my operational faculties will return to optimal status no later than the twenty-first of April, Gegorian year two-thousand twenty one. It is unlikely I will personally distribute information at that time, however there is a measurable probability of my involvement, which should be sufficient motivation for your continued attention. You may express appreciation for expanding your intellectual boundaries through social media @heroesrisednd; electronic correspondence at sendingstone@heroesrisepodcast.com; or direct message communication by way of discord.heroesrisepodcast.comContinuing ingestion of informational broadcasts can be achieved through iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, Stitcher and comparable services, by use of feeds.heroesrisepodcast.com.Maintenance of this chassis requires material components. Imbolc is a festival that celebrates the beginning of spring, and the goddess Brigid. It's a time to celebrate new beginnings, letting go of the past, and preparing for the year ahead. -History-Also called Saint Brigid's Day, Imbolc takes place on Feb 1st, about halfway between the Winter Solstice (Yule) and the Spring Equinox (Ostara). Not to be confused by Candlemas—that's typically celebrated on Feb 2nd. Etymologists think that the word Imbolc comes from old words meaning budding, ewe's milk, and to wash/cleanse oneself, since these are all tied to spring. People have been celebrating Imbolc since the Neolithic period (10,000- 4,500 BC), thanks to evidence of passage tombs throughout Europe, and even in Northern Africa. Passage tombs were not all burial chambers and are made up of huge rocks arranged in such a way that the sun shines through the entrance (or passage) on a specific point of year into the inner chamber. Some had sub-chambers in specific layouts, and art carved into the stones.Fires, feasting, visiting holy wells, and divination were common ways to celebrate.-Brigid-Brigid, Brigit, or Brig appears in Irish folklore as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann. She represents Spring, fertility, livestock, arts/crafts, poetry, and high things (physically, mentally, and spiritually). Sometime before the early middle ages, Brigid was syncretized into Saint Brigid. Saint Brigid is associated with perpetual sacred flames and holy wells.-Traditions-It was said that Brigid would visit families on Imbolc eve, and families would symbolically invite her into their home. They would commonly make a bed for her and set a place at the table and prepare a plate of food for her. People would set out strips of cloth outside for her to bless with protective and healing powers.Brideóg dolls symbolizing Brigid were commonly made and decorated with cloth, ribbons, flowers, shells, and bead. Brigid's Crosses were very popular to make and would be placed above the door for protection. Other activities you can do to celebrate:Weather divination—Groundhog Day! Make or bless candles for the coming year. Choosing and blessing seeds. Thawing ice and using it as holy water (do not drink!). -Correspondences-Animals: Robin, burrowing animals, sheep, lambColors: White, pink, red, light bueStones/Crystals: Bloodstone, Garnet, Ruby, TurquoiseHerbs: Angelica, Bay, Basil, Iris, Daffodil, Heather, Violets, any white or yellow flowersFoods: Dairy, seeds, nuts, muffins, bread, peppers, onions, garlic, potatoes, and dried fruit. Dafydd in actionI was particularly interested in talking to Dafydd because of his close connection to landscape in the Llŷn Peninsula in North West Wales and his commitment to community building. I first met him making traditional Welsh furniture in an Eisteddfod many years ago and was struck by the way he let the natural beauty and form of the wood speak for itself in furniture that was both functional and beautiful. More recently he has devoted himself to building much bigger structures at Menter Felin Uchaf including the amazing roundhouse which has become a lively and well attended venue for storytelling.Inside the Roundhouse at Felin UchafThe conversation took place the summer before last when we were both taking part in a Beyond the Border mini-festival of storytelling inside Harlech Castle - the location for the opening of the Second Branch of the Mabinogi, Branwen ferch Llŷr.Our conversation was wide ranging and includedthe way narrative knowing hides inside academic practice and the bridge between art and sciencestory as the breath of landscapethe need to digest certain material thoroughly before telling it

Does being born to non-married parents affect a child's prospects? It is a question that is notoriously hard to answer. BBC Education Editor Branwen Jeffreys investigates research from Princeton's landmark Fragile Families study, which has gathered data from 5,000 births over the last 18 years. She speaks to principal investigator Professor Sara McLanahan to find out how much we know about the differing outcomes of children raised by married, cohabiting or single parents. Branwen asks how applicable the results of the study are to British society, where very soon, a minority of births will be to married parents. Professor Emla Fitzsimons has been following the lives of 19,000 children, born across the UK in 2000-01. She reveals what the project, know as The Millennium Cohort Study has found. Fishe or Fowle is Kate and Corwen's new duo CD. It is a double CD with 25 tracks. Available now, as a physical CD from their website or to download from Bandcamp. They are musicians, instrument makers and workshop leaders who perform folk music and drama, recreate Ancient music and instruments, make crafts, run workshops for schools and demonstrate at museums and other events. You can find out more about these talented folks on their website or on our Contributor Page.   Trip to Skye/Dance to your Daddy by Mike Gulston This beautiful Medley is made up by Mike's version of Trip to Skye, that he has sped up to a Mazurka rhythm and a beautiful rendition of Dance to your Daddy. He has written his own extra verse to this traditional English folk song. Mike's new solo album, Barking, was released in May 2016, an eclectic collection of traditional and modern songs, ranging from totally silly to tragic, romantic and singalong. For more details about Mike, and his work with Blanche Rowen, see their website or our Contributor Page.   British Witch Legends of Sussex by Shaun Cooper The book includes over sixty Sussex witch legends, mostly in their original texts, and they are compared with witch legends from the rest of the country - so the book is essentially a comparative study of witch legends, albeit with a very strong Sussex emphasis. Other subjects covered are: Sussex fairy and Devil legends, and dragons, Roman roads, the origins and dissemination of witch legends, and so forth. You can see an interactive map of this area on Google Maps or download the KML file for Google Maps/Earth. You can find out more about Shaun and where to get hold of his book on our Contributor Page on with his Publisher, Country Books. We discuss which tribes might fall into the categories of Iron Age 'A', 'B' and 'C' Celts that are referred to in the reading. Although there are some discrepancies with the dating, the history does make sense when compared with the movements of the Atrebates, Catevellauni and Cantiaci tribes at the time of the Roman Conquest of Britain (A.d. 43). With a combination of haunting vocals, evocative fiddle, intoxicating guitar riffs and groovy accordion lines, underpinned with potent bass and dynamic percussion, the band presents an eclectic blend of traditional folk-rock with powerful self-penned songs and tunes. Enchanting melodies intertwine with mythical tales that are sure to captivate your soul, tease your mind and steal your heart, casting your spirit into the realms of magic and the mists of ancient time. We are privileged to bring you the evocative track, Faerie Tale from their album Magick, for our Sussex Celts Show, and you can find the lyrics on their site. You can find out more about Spiral Dance on their website or on our Contributor Page.   Scarborough Faire by Jenna Greene & Kellianna Kellianna is an American Neo-Celtic singer and songwriter internationally renowned for her powerful performance of song and chant inspired by myth, magic, sacred places and ancient times. Jenna Greene, "The Greene Lady", is a weaver of musical myth and magic. With a voice that is both ethereal and soulful, she sings of ancient lore, finding wonder and following dreams. Scarborough Faire is just one of the heart-lifting traditional folk songs on the wonderful collaborative album, Traditions, by Kellianna. You can find out more about the Kellianna on her Contributor Page or more about Jenna Greene on her Contributor Page. We talk about the origins of the original Scarborough Fair and the significance of the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme herbs.   Cold Iron from 'Rewards and Fairies' by Rudyard Kipling Rudyard Kipling was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), Puck of Pook's Hill (1906) and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature, and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Rewards and Fairies is a historical fantasy book by Rudyard Kipling published in 1910. The book consists of a series of short stories set in historical times with a linking contemporary narrative. Dan and Una are two children, living in the Weald of Sussex in the area of Kipling's own home Bateman's. Bateman's, Sussex They have encountered Puck and he magically conjures up real and fictional individuals from Sussex's past to tell the children some aspect of its history and prehistory, though the episodes are not always historically accurate. Another recurring character is Old Hobden who represents the continuity of the inhabitants of the land. His ancestors sometimes appear in the stories and seem very much like him. The full text of Rewards & Fairies can be found on Project Gutenberg. For more details about Rudyard Kipling visit the Wiki Page or Kipling Societ's website.   Shakespeare's Puck & Sussex Pharisees We discuss how Shakespeare may have heard the folklore of Puck on his travels with the Elizabethan court. The local Sussex word for Fairies, Pharisees, comes from the double plural found in the dialect - 'fairies-ies' or 'pharisees'. "Then we have 'Puck' or 'Pook', which is derived from the Saxon word 'Puca', meaning a Goblin (Smith 1956 p.74). Both modern forms are common in placenames as will be seen later in this article, but also occurs as dialect description of fairies, but not just Goblins, which are seen as mischievous or nasty fairies (Simpson & Roud 2000 p.286). 'Dobbs' or 'Master Dobbs' is a name used for a house fairy that helps with the housework. If someone has been working harder than expected, it was often said of them that 'Master Dobbs has been helping you' (Parish & Hall 1957 p.31)." [Sussexarch.org]   Iron from Stone by Damh the Bard This song, Iron from Stone, is inspired by the earlier song, Scarborough Faire. Damh tells us: "Scarborough Faire is an amazing song. Such a wonderful melody and lyric that tells of all of the impossible tasks a human woman would need to achieve to be with a man from Elfland. But I began to wonder… "These wonderful folk songs have been left us by anonymous writers from years ago and have been sung ever since. But is there another story behind Scarborough Faire? What about that songwriter from years ago? What inspired them to write such a song? So I thought I would tell that story." Damh the Bard You can find his music on iTunes, or from his website, Pagan Music. He is also the voice behind Druidcast, the official podcast of the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD, for short) - modern day Druids. You can find Druidcast here and find out more about OBOD here. You can find out more details about Damh on his Contributor page on our website.   Cold Iron by Rudyard Kipling Puck, Dan & Una "Cold Iron" is a poem written by Rudyard Kipling published as the introduction to Rewards and Fairies in 1910. In 1983, Leslie Fish set the poem to music and recorded it as the title track on her fifth cassette-tape album.   Song of the Travelling Fairies by Kate Fletcher & Corwen Broch Song of the Travelling Fairies is a Manx lullaby collected in 1930 by Mona Douglas from Caesar Cashin who said that after each verse there used to be a little dance imitating the movements of the particular bird named. It comes from Fishe or Fowle - Kate and Corwen's new duo CD. It is a double CD with 25 tracks. Available now, as a physical CD from their website or to download from Bandcamp.   Listener Feedback from Natasha in Portsmouth We play some Audio feedback from Natasha in Portsmouth who recommends the lovely music of Lisa Thiel.   There are fairies at the bottom of our garden by Rose Fyleman, read by Amielia Rose Fyleman (1877–1957) was an English writer and poet, noted for her works on the fairy folk, for children. Her poem There are fairies at the bottom of our garden was set to music by English composer Liza Lehmann. This classic, famous and iconic poem first appeared in her book, Fairies and Chimneys, in 1917. Aired Wednesday, 8 February 2017, 8:00 PM ET Valentine’s Day is around the corner and love is in the air…but what about those still looking for love or trying to spice up a relationship that has lost its spark…or even those trying to find the most elusive love, self-love? In his 1993 hit written by Jim Steinman, Mealoaf sang…”I will do anything for love…but I won’t do that.” I always wondered what “that” referred to and there’s been a lot of speculation. But what if “that” had something to do with energy work and magick? Can magick bring us the lover of our dreams, refresh a love that’s grown cold or even help us to find love within? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Lilith Dorsey, has researched these questions with passion and experience for years. Lilith is a magical practitioner and voodoo priestess with training in several traditions, including Celtic, Afro-Caribbean, and Native American spiritualties. She owns her own magickal consulting business, Branwen’s Pantry, and is editor and publisher of Oshun-African Magickal Quarterly. She is also the author of Voodoo and Afro-Caribbean Paganism and The African-American Ritual Cookbook, and is a blogger on Patheos. She has a degree in anthropology from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She joins us to share about her new book, Love Magic: Over 250 Spells and Potions for Getting It, Keeping It and Making It Last.

Rachel Branwen, editor of Slush Pile Magazine, was happy to talk about her thoughts on what the slush pile is really about, disagreeing with Hanas unapologetically.   Welcome, welcome, welcome to Episode TWENTY of Slush Pile! We thank all of our listeners, writers, and guest speakers for supporting this podcast and its mission. We first launched Slush Pile at the end of March at the 2016 AWP Conference. We were thrilled with the enthusiastic response, yet confused athow many times people asked if we were related to Slush Pile Magazine, also debuting at 2016 AWP! We had never heard of this publication, so we hunted down their booth and were blown away by the ladder and a very tall stack of papers.   Author Jonathan Weinert at Slush Pile Magazine's AWP booth We had the pleasure of meeting M. Rachel Branwen, Slush Pile Magazine’s founder and editor, and we invited her back to our booth for some boxed wine and great conversation! Then, we convinced her to come on air. M.Rachel Branwen is the editor of Slush Pile Magazine, the longtime senior reader of fiction at Harvard Review, and the former fiction editor of DigBoston. Her work has appeared in The Missouri Review, The Adirondack Review, The Millions, and elsewhere. She is fond of: bougainvillea, red wine, mashed potatoes, unexpected conversations with oversharing strangers, long road trips, learning new languages, walking up hills for exercise, the thesaurus, her dog (Nigel, a pug), and the movie "When Harry Met Sally." She dislikes:headaches, mosquitoes, and the sounds people make when they're chewing. Feel free to look her up on Facebook here, here, or on Twitter: @slushpilemag. In Episode 017, we spoke to Jim Hanas about the value and perhaps impracticality of today’s slush piles. This week, M. Rachel Branwen was happy to talk about her thoughts on what the slush pile is really about, disagreeing with Hanas unapologetically. Branwen tells us about the history of Slush Pile Magazine, “championing” and “curating” works that Branwen believes deserve the world’s attention. After explaining her magazine’s history, Branwen probed us for the history and executions of Painted Bride Quarterly. Kathy and Marion reminisce about their introduction to a group of people who work on magazines like Painted Bride Quarterly and Slush Pile Magazine simply for the love of literature. Then, we have veteran reader Tim Fitts and brand-new reader Sara Aykit discuss the democratic nature of PBQ’s voting that not only empowers young readers, but keeps the perspectives of older readers fresh. M. Rachel Branwen embodies the pleasure of reading poetry and short stories like they are the only thing that matters. We had a great time discussing her more optimistic views on slush piles and the “staggeringly interesting” Slush Pile Magazine. Check out the Issues Marion raves about here and here! The panelist were: Bill Duke - Moderator (Director of the movie "Dark Girls"), Jason Keller (Screenwriter "Machine Gun Preacher"), Branwen Okpako (Director "The Education Of Auma Obama") and Maggie Peren (Director - "Color Of The Ocean"). The panel is introduced by Brickson Diamond of The Brickhouse Foundation. During the discussion, each of the panelist talk and share about various subjects including why do they do social issue films, their challenges in making social issue films and how do they overcome them. We would like to thank each of the panelists, the Toronto International Film Festival and the Blackhouse Foundation for making this event happen.
