Metal Debate Album Review - Crepuscule Natura (Uada)

The Great Metal Debate Podcast

Welcome back metal heads to another episode of The Great Metal debate podcast. It's your man Xander yet again, back with another album review. Today, we'll be looking at the brand new record from Portland based melodic black metalers Uada with their 4th full-length titled Crepuscule Natura. I have been a fan since 2018 when I first heard their 2nd album Cult Of A Dying Sun. That album has become an all-time favorite. I have defended this band for years now against all the internet trolls who consistently bash this band over weird accusations about Uada supposedly copying other bands. Sure, some things might have similarity, but there has always been differences in both musical structures and stage presence. 2020's Djinn album was a fantastic follow-up to Cult and definitely outdid their Devoid of Light debut. Back in late 2019 I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at Zanzabar in Louisville, Kentucky. After the show I got my picture with the whole band but looking back now it's embarrassing. Maybe I can redeem myself one day when I see them live again. But for now, let's dissect Crepuscule Natura. Starting things long and strong, we got the album opener "The Abyss Gazing Back". It's worth pointing out in advance that this album only has 5 songs but each of them account for the nearly 42 minute runtime. Lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Jake Superchi crushes it yet again with his beautifully written melodic riffs and harrowing bellows. One thing that I noticed immediately was a musical return to form as this new record reminds me so much of their Devoid of Light debut. The winding guitar tune in this one especially toward this track's conclusion is the good kind of earworm hook that you won't mind getting stuck in your head. Hearing this full album on repeat for a total of 5 times has made me appreciate the hard work each member of the current line-up has put into this breathtaking release. Two new members have stepped in as the secondary guitarist Kevin Bedra and Trevor McCain who is now pounding away at the skins. Both of which are seemingly a perfect fit for this band and I must compliment them for a job well done. Then we have the album title track "Crepuscule Natura" which takes you on another hypnotic journey. This is followed up with "The Dark (Winter)". The opening riffs alone are enough to make you enter a meditative state. This is precisely the kind of music I want to hear emanating from my ear buds when I take a nature walk. Just like the previous album Djinn, the bass is audible in most areas but throughout certain areas in the mixing I have noticed the absence. This is my minute gripe with this album. This of course is no shade being thrown toward Nate Verschoor as I think he does a phenomenal job. But again, I feel like his abilities could've stood out just a little more in the sound mixing. Maybe with future efforts, the volume can be turned up just a hair. Next is "Retraversing The Void" which had a lyric video released on YouTube. I won't spoil too much here as I believe fans should check it out for themselves. Closing things out we got the band's 12 minute long epic titled "Through The Wax and Through The Wane". I must criticize one thing about this track. It's too long and lacks variety as the same long windy riff seems to go on for a long time. It's still a good tune but certainly has some fat that could benefit from being trimmed just a little. Crepuscule Natura is yet another solid release from an incredible band but I must say this album is not really my favorite. It is definitely better than Devoid of Light despite my earlier comparison and praise. But I still love Djinn as 2nd best and I believe Cult Of A Dying Sun is their magnum opus. Sometimes when you catch lightning in a bottle; it's extremely difficult to top such an impressive feat. All things considered, I'm going to rate this album as 8/10.

CREDITS: Extraits films:  The Apartment, Billy Wilder, 1960 Ninotchka, Ernst Lubitsch, 1939 Double Indemnity, Billy Wilder, 1944 To be or not to be, Ernst Lubitsch, 1942 Autres extraits:  Billy Wilder on the Lubitsch Touch, extrait AFI Harold Lloyd Master Seminar, 1976.Hébergé par Ausha. That’s why trees were so important to Celtic culture. It doesn’t matter if you don’t believe all the scientific evidence that points to human-made Climate Change. What is important is stewardship of our planet. We need to take care of it. So in 2020, I want to draw attention to our hurting planet and how we can do just that. That’s why our latest shirt and sticker design includes the Celtic Tree of Life. I’ll be honest. I don’t have specifics as to what we can do. But if you have suggestions, please email me. I noticed the other day that you had Round the House on. They're so cool. I've jammed with them before (I play tin whistle and bodhran) and they're delightful. I recently went to the World Highland Games in Tucson, AZ. It was so lovely to watch them toss the caber and hammer. They broke a record in something I don’t know the name of. It’s a 2 stone bail of hay trussed up in canvas they toss with a pitchfork. I’d love to know what that’s called. I was off listening to music and eating haggis and a scone when they announced that name. Here’s a pic of me hiking home from Muckross Abbey after a long day of exploring in the rain. Slainte" Marshall Blosser emailed: "Hey Celtfather, In searching for Newfoundland Celtic artists it dawned on me that you had a 2 hour special on Canadian Celtic music back in 2016. Episode 254 specifically from April 7, 2016.   That episode gave me several artists to look up.  For me specifically, The Rolling Kings, and The Ennis Sisters. As well as a few others from neighboring provinces. My own on-line research found several other artists although I am not sure how many are still active. Listing the ones I can find on either Amazon or CDBaby first: The Irish Descendants, Celtic Connection, Shanneyganook, The Flummies, and Great Big Sea. I know Great Big Sea isn't an active group any more but it's members, specifically Alan Doyle, Sean McCann and Murray Foster have continued to record music. There is one band I want to get some recordings of but I can't find any information on is Greeley's Reel. They've been playing the local St John's pubs for 10 years. As I visit the pubs I will make sure to try and connect any Irish/Celtic bands I find to your submission page. I am also kicking around the idea of starting a podcast of local artists for Newfoundland to help get them some more exposure. Any advise on how you started would be awesome. Looking forward to sending you many new artists" Tim Sommer in Middleton, ID emailed: "Hi Marc, I love your podcast and wanted to support it and was signing up for the $5 per month contribution and I just briefly saw the window to select that.... when what do you know...I was signed up for the $5 per episode.  Couldn’t figure out how to change that number so am asking for your help to change it. Yes, I do think you are worth $5 an episode but if my wife starts seeing the monthly amount for that instead of the $5 per month, she’ll be using her serious face and posture, asking me what I thought I was doing. It could impact my entire Irish and Scottish music habit.  It’s like knowing how many beers you can drink at the session before you are in serious trouble."

Anna Domino in conversation with David Eastaugh Early in her career, Domino sang with a number of New York City bands, but didn't catch the attention of American record labels until she had released several albums with the Belgian record label Les Disques du Crépuscule, releasing a single in 1983, Trust In Love. Two E.P. releases, East and West and Rythm, followed in short order. In 1986, her first full-length album Anna Domino was released. In 1987, she met Michel Delory, guitarist for Bel Canto and Univers Zéro, and they collaborated on her second album This Time, which received positive critical attention and airplay in Japan. In 1989, Domino released another E.P., Colouring In the Edge and the Outlinefollowed by her third album Mysteries of America in 1990. Since then Domino has not released any further albums under her own name—other than compilations, re-releases on the label LTM and a few new songs—due to intractable disputes with publisher. In 2010 Anna Domino released two new songs on a compilation that included a number of her Crepuscule colleagues. The album was called "After Twilight" and the songs are The Light Downtown, Wonderkey and a new version of the song 'Rhythm'. Also in 2010, Domino recorded two versions of Suzanne Vega’s classic Blood Makes noise for the Allergy To Consciousness singles series that was released on minimalist independent label EnT-T. In January 2012, she collaborated with producer/remixer Dub Mentor on the single Johnny - which is based on the traditional When Johnny Comes Marching Home and Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya (also released on EnT-T). Domino also made the video for the song. A short tour of Europe in early 2013 sparked new interest in Domino's work, giving her the opportunity to record again and the hope of realising projects in theatre and film. A few months later, the death of a good friend, a surprise legacy and a number of other shocks and demises, followed by the loss of her mother in early 2014, sidelined these ambitions. On February 2019, she was featured on Dub Mentor’s rendition of her classic Lake. Domino re-recorded the vocals for one of the versions and the second version, a spoken word version, featured the vocals of Stephen Mallinder. The double single was also released on EnT-T. Anna Domino is expected to return with new music.

Although over month ago, this photo shows me driving back from Canberra to my home town Bendigo (700km) while listening to your podcast.   Myself and my friend, and fellow musician, Keven McCarthy had just spent the Easter long weekend at the Australian National Folk Festival presenting “Songs From The Australian Tradition” session on each day of the festival.  Australia has many traditional songs. Many of these songs use traditional Irish melodies or are even parodies of traditional Irish songs. The Nation Folk Festival was one of 3 festivals the Kevin and I attended in South Eastern Australia over 17 days around Easter.  We started at the Lake Cullulleraine Music Festival, then the National Folk Festival and ended up at the Koroit Irish Festival. By the time I arrived back home, we had covered 2800 km and listened to many Irish and Celtic Music Podcasts, the quintessential road trip podcast. As an Irish man I have been hearing Celtic music all my life and it takes me back to a lovely atmosphere when I listen to these tracks. Recently, I have been following a band which I had done a little camera work with in the past, The Ronan Gallagher Band. They are very talented and are from the region I come from, so I am a big fan of their music. They are what inspired me to look for more traditional music which lead me to this newsletter." You moved to New Orleans just as I moved from there to the Mississippi gulf coast. And now you are in my old stomping grounds of Atlanta. My family is moving from the Mississippi gulf coast to the eastern most  city in North America (St John's NL) so my wife can get her PhD in analytical chemistry. (I know you understand about moving to support your wife) We will be driving there mid December (all 54 hours of it).  Apart from episode 421 the long drive - that's an understatement - we would like to have a few  CDs to pass the time on the road. I know there is a large Celtic music scene up there. Do you know of any St John's or Newfoundland Celtic artists that we could buy to support and listen to on the way there? Thanks muchly, P.S. I am an aspiring writer and your podcasts have inspired several stories (now if I could just get published) Txs again. Keep the Celtic light burning, in all its colors" Marshall Blosser emailed: "Marc, I have enjoyed your podcast for over 12 years. The variety of music you bring to this show never fails to inspire and amaze me. The fact that you follow the roots of the music and the tendrils of its influence show just how connected the world is and how music is one of those things that can unite everyone. You understand and respect that musically there is no one Celtic musical voice. But rather that it is a rich and varied chorus of voices that make up that sound. I applaud the fact that you are seeking musicians and tunes for a Celtic LGBTQIA+ Pride special next year. The fact that you stand for the diversity that makes this music so touching and valuable is wonderful and so needed everywhere. Being upbeat in these changing times is a choice and you are an inspiration. As a friend of mine once said, “Damn! Jim you have made something from nothing!” So…. For ages my wife and I aspired to visit Australia and New Zealand. Being two unabashed geeks, we could not make a trip Down Under without dropping in for a tour of Hobbiton. What an amazing day it was conjuring up the feeling that, at any moment, Sam, Frodo or Bilbo might emerge to challenge all of us interlopers in The Shire. While that particular encounter didn’t happen, I did get to talk up the podcast to fellow tourists plus our guide in response to their questions regarding my catchy and quite fetching t-shirt. Hopefully, you’ll pick up a few new worldly fans as a result. I’ve been a devoted listener to the podcast for many years and credit multiple episodes for enriching and expanding my collection of Celtic music. At last count, some 15 artists have joined my growing mix, which all came about only because you featured them in an episode after they submitted their hopes, ambitions and livelihood for consideration. Thanks to you and all the incredible indie Celtic artists for providing us a way to connect and support what we love. In closing, here’s an idea to ponder. What about a future Celtic Invasion Vacation to New Zealand? After all, Dunedin in the South Island has a mighty strong Scottish heritage and the Celtic spirit is alive and well I hear. Not to mention Hobbiton beckoning away on the North Island. A bit ambitious perhaps but it would be up there in the Trip of a Lifetime category, which I can definitely vouch for. My best to you, your family and all the fans in the 2019 new year. Sláinte! This time of year, I especially appreciate holiday music that is different (and better) than what I'm forced to hear in public. Today, I am cleaning the house ahead of company, and enjoying the music and a very thematic beer, pic attached. I wish I could mail you some... maybe it's available in your area? I highly recommend this beer. I try to wear my podcast shirt so I can spread the word! Regarding voting, although all your featured musicians are wonderful, when asked to vote for a specific episode's featured musician, perhaps asking to vote for that particular/featured song would be more appropriate? By that I mean, I have gone back & searched the bands featured but found 2 or 3 songs as my personal favourites. Absolutely no offence to the great bands but I wouldn't go as far as voting them as my favourite bands, rather songs :) Also, what do you think about either as the final episode of the year or the first episode of the year, featuring the top rated songs of the year, voted by the listeners? Anyway thank you again and I promise to become a paid subscriber once I have some income. Thank you so much!  I use them on my running playlist. I have your podcast to thank for where I am today. My wife’s family is Scottish and Irish. I am of German heritage. After attending several St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with them, I really started to listen to the music. I stumbled upon your podcast shortly thereafter. I was a casual listener for a number of years. After the economic collapse of 2008, I found myself without a job. I went back to school to become a nurse and found that I needed to learn how to speed read in order to keep up with the assignments. I used the jigs and reels in your podcast to help keep me on tempo and keep my speed up. Fast forward several years later.... My daughter wanted to take dance lessons. My mother in law told her that if we enrolled her in Irish or Highland Dance she would pay for lessons. My daughter settled on Highland Dance and we found a group that offered lessons. It was a pipe and drum band with a dance troop. They also offered bagpipe lessons for free. After listening to your podcast for several years, my love for the music had grown so much that I jumped on the opportunity to learn the bagpipes. I now have become an active member of the band, performing for gigs and the competition team, but I also have branched out on my own as a solo piper. I look forward to your podcast every week. I've started with the Celtic music because of a brasilian band called Tuatha de Danann. I'd like to indicate them for you. I just listened to the "Summer Road Trip #361", and I heard a Brasilian band, Braia! They have almost the same musicians of the band I mentioned. Here follows some other names I remembered, mainly with flute or Whistles on their songs: Kernunna (BR), Tuatha de Danann (BR) , Braia (BR) , Flook, Luar na Lubre, MuteFish, Thanks for your very nice mood, always, and for  your inspiration! The album has, of course, been getting play already thanks to the digital version. In traditional Bards style, it's such a fun album.  So good to have you and Andrew working together again. While I'm here, I wanted to express how much I appreciate your support of women in Celtic music.  I'd meant to chime in earlier. Better late than never. In any case, I heard some feedback from one listener saying they were buying albums from everyone on the podcast to do their part.  I've been doing the same, and I'm sure others have been as well. I admire your willingness to double down on this across all of your platforms. There's more than enough room for any Celtic musician on the stage without unnecessary divisions.  It's the sort of thing that makes me proud to back your efforts, musical and otherwise." Seeing as how this time of year is horse racing season leading up to the derby in May I was wondering if you could consider doing a celtic horse special. There are a lot of great celtic songs featuring horses. Some of my favorites were Galway Farmer by The Trinity River Whalers and Darcy's Donkey by Gaelic Storm. Keep up the great job and as always, slancha." Jason Nevins emailed: "Love the Pod, Love the Diversity. Hi Marc, The Irish and Celtic Music Podcast has always reminded me of how, when I was a kid, I used to listen to Celtic music with my mom on weekends. When I left for college and started living on my own, I found the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, only a few months after you first launched it. Your show helped me stay in touch with my roots as I went through college in Wisconsin, grad school in New Mexico, got married, and had two beautiful children. My daughter is four now and we listen to the podcast every Sunday morning while I make crepes for the whole family. I like to think that she'll grow up and remember weekends with dad and Celtic music the way that I remember weekends with my mom. I was surprised this past weekend to hear that you received negative feedback about the Diversity in Celtic Music episode. However, I was elated to hear your impassioned defense of women, people of color, transgender folks, and all other marginalized groups - many of whom are part of the Celtic music community. As soon as my wife and I heard that, we wanted to show our support for you and your podcast by supporting you on patreon. Thank you for all of your hard work and thank you for speaking out against intolerance, hate, and bigotry."

I moved from DC to Decatur Ga in 1992 to be around for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.  Never moved back. Three random Celtic items. 1) WRFG (FM 89.3) has a long-running Celtic music show broadcasting every Sunday 5-7pm 2) The Marlay House in Decatur GA is our best local Irish pub.  The pub used to have a weekly Irish music session but I think that has gone dormant.  One of the best pubs to get a pint, watch rugby and football (soccer) and get some trad food.  Good place for St. Patrick's Day with live music. Bonus is that the Marlay has its own fish n' chips food truck that goes to outdoor festivals. 3) Mac McGee on Decatur square is another good Irish pub with a large selection of irish whiskey.  The pub occasionally has Irish music. Decatur itself has some of the best restaurants and bars in the Atlanta.  I particularly recommend the Brick Store Pub (best beer selection in US) and Chai Pani (great Indian cuisine). Wishing you a smooth relocation” Sam Vermeulen emailed on Facebook: "Just discovered this show on spotify. I'm on the 3rd episode  non stop . Thanks for doing this."

Joe Milazzo is a novelist focused on consciousness. He is the author of Crepuscule with Nellie, a surreal and dense "speculative historical fiction novel about Thelonious Monk, his wife Nellie, and his confidant and patron the Baroness Pannonica de Koenigswarter."  In this episode, we talk gift economies, uncomfortable art, Tropisms, Joseph McElroy's Plus (a novel about a brain coming into consciousness in space), the opacity of social media, Philip K. Dick, going crazy while reading a crazy book, anchor characters, and "woodshedding." Joe's website Joe's Twitter

We're three shows in to a Celtic radio show that we call "Celtic Highways and Byways" and I'm writing to ask your sage advice on obtaining new music. We're operating on pretty much a zero budget (volunteer DJs, public/community radio, etc.) and the current library of Celtic music at the station is rather old - there was a show that ended about 6 yrs back, so the 'newest' stuff in the collection is circa 2009. We do have a few CDs of our own that we tap into, but finding new music is our goal. One of the areas we are trying to focus on is reinforcing the connections between the music of the Celts and music in the Appalachias. We've made some inroads into this, but we're kinda newbies (although I have played Celtic music for a number of years - whistle and flute). ANY insights you may have are appreciated. We subscribe to your podcast, and enjoy it greatly - I generally listen while I am at work, while my wife plays it loud all about the house. :-)" Thank you Paul. First, Marc is fine. I especially love Celtic rock and you have a special hour just on that with bands I’m mostly unfamiliar with! Ed Miller used to host a Celtic segment on Austin’s NPR station, but he NEVER played anything with bagpipes. I have a theory that Ed Miller doesn’t like the bagpipes. But you, Marc, you aren’t afraid of anything!" You're very welcome Robert. That's one of the many things I love about this podcast. The diversity. That is what truly makes America great. A few years ago, I published my CD How America Saved Irish Music (listen to show #169). The main part of the story is that the Irish diaspora preserved traditional Irish music, which made it's way back to Ireland. But the other aspect is that we are melting pot of different cultures. And all of those influences end up in contemporary Irish & Celtic music, whether you're talking about rock'n'roll, R&B, jazz, country, bluegrass, hip hop, electronica. And it's brilliant. The traditional culture is important but so are the changes that affect the music every day. Without it, I would be playing the same 12 bands over and over again. As for Ed Miller, I love that theory. And I have a few vague memories of him cracking jokes about bagpipes which may confirm your hypothesis. If you're like Ed Miller or just like Ed Miller's music, he has a radio program called Across the Pond. It comes out on Sundays from 6-8 PM on Sunradio in Austin. And I *think* you can listen to it online. The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast exists on the generosity of our Patrons of the Podcast. Ray Chatterton posted on Facebook: "My last name is Chatterton and you cannot get much more English than that, but from my father's side of the family I have Irish, Welsh, Scottish, and a wee bit of German mixed in. Thus my love of this music. I found you by accident, but I adhere to the concept that there are no accidents ... there is only some purpose that we haven't yet understood." John Thompson emailed: "Just a quick e-mail after listening to show #279. Another great one! A listener commented on the band Scythian. It's pronounced Sith' ee in. They're from the DC area. The founding band members (two brothers and now a sister) actually have Ukrainian heritage. They play quite an assortment of music including Celtic and folk -- traditional, covers, and original material. A band you really need to see live to fully appreciate the energy they bring to their shows. Old Tin Can I think was their latest studio album but they followed that with a live cd called Old Time Good Time Tour. Give it a listen if you get the chance. Keep up the great work!" Steven Rausch emailed: "You ask what we do when listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. Well, I'm in the home stretch of a painting project on my 130-year-old farmhouse. I fire up my headset with your podcast, working my way from the newest to the ones I've enjoyed previously. A great way to work and makes the job go faster and easier. Also, I wanted to highlight a tune by the Elders, "Appalachian Paddy," from a recent podcast. It's a long one but a great story of how the Irish came to my part of the country. Talk about an earworm. Thanks for your work and for making mine go much better."   This Week in Celtic Music 0:44 "The Hosting of the Sidhe" by Crepuscule from Horizon 5:44 "Dowd's Favourite" by Spencer Murray & Pipeslinger from Sound & Fury 10:07 "Jack Haggerty" by Sisters of Murphy from Working Stiffs Unite 13:16 "Le Jupon Blanc" by Doolin' from Doolin' 15:58 "My Lagan Love" by Innisfall from Innisfall 20:03 "Twenty Candles on Poitin's Cake" by Poitin from Simple Pleasures 24:42 CELTIC PODCAST NEWS 25:37 "Row By Row" by The Led Farmers from Katie 29:15 "The Track for the Craic" by Socks in the Frying Pan from Socks in the Frying Pan 33:40 "Banks of Inishfree" by The Ceili Family from Ministry of Silly Folk 37:38 "Stumblin' Home" by In For A Penny from Every Day 40:22 "Smuggler Cove" by NUA from FLOW 46:16 "Come Out Ye Black and Tans" by The Kilt Lifters from Jack in the Green 50:20 "The Halsway Parade/The Quantock Reel" by Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer from Paper of Pins 55:14 "The Boys of Mullaghbawn" by Colleen Raney from Here This Is Home 1:00:13 "Crow's Nest" by Skeleton McKee from Leave the World Laughing 1:03:23 "Spirit of the Planet" by Saor Patrol from Outlander   1:08:30 CELTIC FEEDBACK 1:10:46 "Pirate Smith of Bristol" by Spirited Lads from Spirited Lads 1:13:18 "Dan O'Leary, The Walker" by Paddy's Pig from Rebel Tooth EP 1:17:10 "Shove the Pigs Foot a Little Furter" by We Banjo 3 from Gather the Good 1;20:43 "Tom Malloy" by Old Man Flanagan's Ghost from Sociable 1:24:18 "Airbag (Featuring Ruth Moody)" by The Fretless from The Fretless 1:28:31 "Mavis McGee" by Tuatha Dea from Kith and Kin 1:33:44 PATRONS OF THE PODCAST 1;35:38 "Bully the Bullies" by LQR from 10 Pinter 1:39:43 "Willies aul Trews, Bunch of Keys" by Adamh from Adamh 144:30 "Boys from the Ruhr" by Connemara Stone Company from Back Home 1:48:12 "Angel" by Rachel Hair Trio from Tri 1:51:58 "48 Hours in Belfast" by Wild Colonial Bhoys from On Our Own 1:58:03 "I Courted a Sailor" by The Gothard Sisters from Mountain Rose VOTE IN THE CELTIC TOP 20. This year, Guelph’s Improviser-in-Residence is Douglas R. Ewart of the Art Institute of Chicago, AACM, and Aarawak Records. In this episode of Sound It Out you will hear Ewart discuss his project Crepuscule in an interview with Dr. Ajay Heble that took place the morning of September 17, 2015 as part of the yearly Jazz Festival Colloquium. Ewart talks about the powerful maternal figures in his early life in Jamaica and being inspired by the strength and understanding demonstrated by Thelonious Monk’s wife Nellie, for whom Monk wrote Crepuscule with Nellie. He reflects on the relationship between individual self-respect and group solidarity, and the value of improvising together with a positive valence on diversity. This episode originally aired on CFRU on September 24th, 2015. Sound It Out is hosted by Rachel Elliott who is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Sound It Out is produced in conjunction with the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. The show explores whether and how improvised music can serve as a basis for discursive inclusivity, the creation of new forms of shared meaning, and more democratic means of connecting with each other. Sound It Out airs on Guelph’s campus and community radio station, CFRU 93.3FM, on alternating Tuesdays at 5pm.
