Would you risk it all to expose the truth? Discover the extraordinary story of John Kiriakou. Dr. Phil welcomes John Kiriakou, a former CIA counterterrorism officer and best-selling author, who sacrificed his freedom to expose one of the government's darkest secrets. Kiriakou played a pivotal role in counterterrorism after 9/11 but made headlines when he revealed the CIA's use of waterboarding, denouncing it as torture. This brave act led to his indictment under the Espionage Act—a law meant to punish spies—and landed him in prison for 23 months. In this thought-provoking episode, John shares his story, from his work in intelligence to his fight for transparency and ethical treatment of whistleblowers. As the recipient of the Joe A. Callaway Award for Civic Courage, Kiriakou reflects on the moral dilemmas of his career and the ongoing battle to champion human rights. With Dr. Phil, he explores the critical question: What happens when exposing the truth comes at the ultimate personal cost? Thank you to our sponsors!

There's a popular story that goes like this: Christopher Hitchens used to be in favor of the US waterboarding terrorists because he though it's wasn't bad enough to be torture.. Then he had it tried on himself, and changed his mind, coming to believe it isn't torture.(Context for those unfamiliar: in the decade following 9/11, the US engaged in a lot of... questionable behavior to persecute the war on terror, and there was a big debate on whether waterboarding should be permitted. Many other public figures also volunteered to undergo the procedure as a part of this public debate; most notably Sean Hannity, who was an outspoken proponent of waterboarding, yet welched on his offer and never tried it himself.)This story intrigued me because it's popular among both Hitchens' fans and his detractors. There's a popular story that goes like this: Christopher Hitchens used to be in favor of the US waterboarding terrorists because he though it's wasn't bad enough to be torture.. Then he had it tried on himself, and changed his mind, coming to believe it isn't torture. (Context for those unfamiliar: in the decade following 9/11, the US engaged in a lot of... questionable behavior to persecute the war on terror, and there was a big debate on whether waterboarding should be permitted. Many other public figures also volunteered to undergo the procedure as a part of this public debate; most notably Sean Hannity, who was an outspoken proponent of waterboarding, yet welched on his offer and never tried it himself.) This story intrigued me because it's popular among both Hitchens' fans and his detractors. His fans use it as an example of his intellectual honesty and willingness to undergo significant personal costs in order to have accurate beliefs and improve the world. His detractors use it to argue that he's self-centered and unempathetic, only coming to care about a bad thing that's happening to others after it happens to him. But is the story actually true? Usually when there are two sides to an issue, one side will have an incentive to fact-check any false claims that the other side makes. An impartial observer can then look at the messaging from both sides to discover any flaws in the other. But if a particular story is convenient for both groups, then neither has any incentive to debunk it. I became suspicious when I tried going to the source of this story to see what Hitchens had written about waterboarding prior to his 2008 experiment, and consistently found these leads to evaporate. The part about him having it tried on himself and finding it tortureous is certainly true. He reported this himself in his Vanity Fair article Believe me, It's Torture. But what about before that? Did he ever think it wasn't torture? His article on the subject doesn't make any mention of changing his mind, and it perhaps lightly implies that he always had these beliefs. He says, for example: In these harsh [waterboarding] exercises, brave men and women were introduced to the sorts of barbarism that they might expect to meet at the hands of a lawless foe who disregarded the Geneva Conventions. But it was something that Americans were being trained to resist, not to inflict. [Link to an article explaining that torture doesn't work.] [And later:] You may have read by now the official lie about this treatment, which is that it "simulates" the feeling of drowning. This is not the case. You feel that you are drowning because you are drowning[.] In a video interview he gave about a year later, he said: There was only one way I felt I could advance the argument, which was to see roughly what it was like. The loudest people on the internet about this were... not promising. Shortly after the Vanity Fair article, the ACLU released an article titled "Christopher Hitchens Admits Waterboarding is Torture", saying: You have to hand it to him: journalist Christopher Hitchens, who previously discounted that waterboarding was indeed torture, admits in the August issue of Vanity Fair that it is, indeed, torture. But they provide no source for this claim. As I write this, Wikipedia says: Hitchens, who had previously expressed skepticism over waterboarding being considered a form of torture, changed his mind. No source is provided for this either. Yet it's repeated everywhere. The top comments on the Youtube video. Highly upvoted Reddit posts. Etc. Sources for any of these claims were quite scant. Torture is generally thought of as a bad things - an unacceptable means to an end. But what if that end is justifiable? In many cases, torture is clearly unethical - for example when used as a means of political suppression, as a fear tactic, or for a forced confession. But what about torture in more ambiguous cases - when the torturer is fairly confident that the person being tortured has key information that could save many lives if it were obtained? The Cold War didn't end for everyone when the Berlin Wall came down. While the US moved into an economic boom that ultimately dragged us into the 20-year global war on terrorism, other Cold War adversaries stayed locked in the fight. And now that we are coming out of our 20-year cave, we are waking up to realize that the fight is still on. And if that isn't crazy enough, some people still believe the earth is flat! Episode #069Patrick starts the show by pushing Janets' buttons to make her laugh. And they go into how she gets happy feet when she saves money. From there Patrick welcomes the new listeners and they tell you about today's episode. Yes, it really is an odd name, right up until you listen. They always seem to find humor in any situation. No matter how serious it is and how expensive the actual subject is. And of course, they get into the actual subject of chrome. People ask truckers a lot of questions about how much they spend on a semi and how much they spend on the chrome they add to them. They both felt that decking your Rig out with extra fancy paint and tons of chrome really got a huge boost with the show Chrome Shop Mafia. That was back around 1999. Which somehow leads them down yet another rabbit hole about show horses and movies. After they came back around to fancy chrome and chicken lights, they settled down to chrome again. They pulled out some basic examples of prices from a tried-and-true friend of the show. They went through individual prices and gave an approximate total price for example. They managed to give out some useful information in spite of themselves. And explain how you can spend less or more and that you can buy things a little at a time. They finish things up by being so darn useful you will be surprised! It is like they forgot how to joke. Probably because they both do Love those Big Rigs and miss driving them. They spend the second half of the show discussing how to care for the chrome on your Big Rig as well as how to care for your Big Rig in general.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e69Other episodes mentioned in the show: Episode #12 and Episode #37Omalight Flashlight Military-grade aluminum alloy as the body material. On this episode, I discuss the interrogation scene and what is becoming a prevalent style of play, Waterboard. On what some listeners have called one of the best episodes yet of The Charlie Kirk Show, Charlie delivers a passionate rebuke of the Biden Regime's Department of Justice in light of breaking news that confirms what Steve Bannon said on this program last week—that 40 associates, allies, and supporters of President Trump have been subpoenaed, raided, and —in some cases—terrorized by the FBI over their ties to the 45th President. He walks through the latest news and lays out a path forward for the movement, how we should respond, and asks the question: why didn't any of the numerous Democrats who objected to every presidential electoral count since 2001 face the same legal pressure currently being put on conservatives in 2022? Finally, leaning on the words of George Orwell, he paints a picture of our future if we choose to give up this fight and allow the Regime to run roughshod over the American Spirit. Teal Swan is a highly controversial New Age guru with millions of online followers. Teal specifically markets her services to vulnerable, often suicidal individuals, and advances highly controversial and/or damaging beliefs and techniques including: Encouraging graphic suicidal ideation. Nurturing false memories and false accusations of ritual abuse by family members through thoroughly debunked recovered memory techniques. Waterboarding as a trauma treatment. Downplaying the severity of death by suicide by likening it to “hitting the reset button” into a future reincarnated life. Teal's practices are covered more thoroughly in the recently released Hulu series entitled “The Deep End.” Several deaths by suicide have been attributed to Teal's practices. In today's episode we interview Diana Hansen Ribera, who was one of Teal's closest childhood and adolescent friends. In her interview, Diana provides thorough detail to challenge Teal's false claims of being a victim of satanic ritual abuse and sex trafficking as a child, and explains how Teal developed her coercion skills and harmful techniques with Diana — that Teal would eventually employ on a broader scale. Warning: This interview contains graphic and disturbing content. Viewer and listener discretion is advised. Controversy has taken over the podcast as questions arise over whether or not Will was invited to Randy's birthday party. After trudging through the details of that, we dive into a Vermont hazing scandal and talk about how we're now sending signals of our location to aliens. To round things out, we discuss a video of OJ Simpson waking up in a bed surrounded by coeds.
