In this fourth installment of The Blueprint of Becoming, we dive deep into the life-changing power of intimacy with Christ. This isn't just about knowing about God—it's about being known by Him. Tune in as we explore the transformational nature of true intimacy with Christ. Beyond surface-level faith, this conversation challenges you to examine whether you are walking in real friendship with God—or simply knowing about Him from a distance. We unpack the difference between head knowledge and heart transformation, the weight of obedience in cultivating closeness with God, and how reverence and trust form the foundation of spiritual intimacy. You'll hear reflections on the sobering realization that not everyone is a friend of God—and the grace that invites us into deeper communion with Him. Whether you've been walking with God for years or you're just beginning to seek Him for yourself, this episode invites you to go deeper—to know and be known by the only One who truly matters. #193 | Hiking the PCT in a High Snow Year with Daniel Winsor and Ned Tibbits

Backpacker Radio

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 20, 2023 230:39

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are yet again talking all things hiking the PCT in a high snow year. This episode was recorded in early March, now that we have a clearer picture of what the 2023 hiking season will look like, and it is historically snowy. Today's episode features a pair of interviews- first we are joined by Daniel Winsor, 2017 PCT NOBO thru-hiker and author of "Crunch: A Million Snowy Steps Along the Pacific Crest Trail". Daniel was one of the first people through the Sierra in 2017, another historically high snow year, and shares in detail what his experience looked like, including his preferred traction, how to safely navigate high water crossings, the importance of traveling with a group, the schedule necessary for making miles, his close calls, and more. We are then joined by Ned Tibbits, founder of Mountain Education, a non-profit, public charity wilderness school that has been teaching people how to safely backpack year-round since 1982. Ned gives us even more nitty gritty detail about his advice for navigating the Sierra in high snow, including the safest time to enter the Sierra, the proper traction equipment, managing water crossings, and more. A lot of Ned and Daniel's advice overlaps, some of it deviates. Importantly- the advice issued in today's show is for informational purposes only. This is not intended to and should not be relied upon solely for how to navigate dangerous, backpacking conditions, which the PCT is sure to offer this year and beyond. Please seek the guidance of a skilled instructor for learning how to backpack through high snow and do not rely solely on any podcast, this one included. We wrap the show with two very embarrassing stories for ole Badger. In this week's episode, we will be speaking with Dr. Irl Hirsch about the high costs of insulin. Dr. Hirsch will discuss the struggles that people with type 1 diabetes face because the cost of insulin has increased to an untouchable point, which forces people to find alternative ways to save money. We will also be talking about the politicization of insulin costs and who's really to blame. Dr. Hirsch received his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1984. He completed residency training in internal medicine at the University of Miami, in Miami, Florida, and Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach, Florida, and a research fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. From both a research and teaching point of view, Dr. Hirsch's career has focused on studying the best strategies for the use of insulin therapy in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. More recently, he has become involved with artificial pancreas technology and better understanding of the limitations of diabetes biomarkers. With regards to patient care, most patients in his practice have type 1 diabetes or atypical forms of diabetes. Over the years, he has been a passionate advocate for patients ensuring access and affordability for glucose monitoring technology and in the past decade, insulin. Dr. Hirsch has authored more than 250 research papers, more than 60 editorials (including the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA), and numerous book chapters in addition to six books for patients and physicians Dr. Hirsch is the former chair of the Professional Practice Committee for the American Diabetes Association and has served as editor-in-chief of two ADA journals, “Clinical Diabetes” and “DOC News”. He is an Associate Editor of “Diabetes Technology and Therapeutics” and has been on the editorial board of “Diabetes Care”. Tears, fear, and slamming beers ensues. We also feature our most impromptu interview to date with our new pal, Fancy Feast. Fancy Feast just wrapped a thru-hike of the Colorado Trail, after having her SOBO PCT plans thwarted by California's fires. In addition to giving us the unenviable story of finding Badger's dirty socks, she shares her experiences of working a variety of conservation jobs, including her time at the Green Mountain Club, and quite possibly the funniest trail name origin story we've ever heard. We wrap the show with a triple crown of the most beautiful spaces we've seen while backpacking, a quick n dirty gear review on the Platypus QuickDraw, and some listener feedback on period underwear.   Minus33: Head to minus33.com and use code “21backpacker15” for 15% off your order Enlightened Equipment: Save 10% off of Enlightened Equipment's Stock Revelation Quilt or Torrid Jacket with code “thetrek10” here  Organifi discount code: Use code “backpacker” at organifi.com/backpacker for 20% off your purchase ZBiotics: Use code “trek10” at zbiotics.com [divider] Interview with Fancy Feast Fancy Feast's Instagram Time stamps & Questions 00:04:40 - QOTD: Do people attempting an FKT take the time to bury their poop? 00:06:30 - Backpacker Team Hot Ones 00:07:23 - How is everyone's spice tolerance?  00:09:05 - Chaunce, what's the longest you have gone without a shower? 00:11:00 - Zach, are there any big adventure plans with Leo?  00:12:20 - Chaunce, if you could co-host with someone other than Zach, who would you pick? 00:12:42 - Zach, if you could co-host with someone other than Chaunce, who would you pick? 00:14:03 - Can you name the first 10 episodes of Backpacker Radio in order?  00:18:11 - Zach, do you and Chaunce ever argue over creative differences? In today's episode of backpacker radio presented by the trek, we are joined by Emily Ford.  Perhaps you've heard that name in the backpacking sphere of late, because Emily recently wrapped a thru-hike of Wisconsin's Ice Age Trail- in the dead of winter- becoming just the second person ever to do so, and the first woman.  We do a deep dive on Emily's journey, including what gear she used, the weather conditions (spoiler alert- it was cold as hell), how she had to knock on strangers' doors to ask if she could sleep in their yard, and how she managed this trek alongside a husky that did not belong to her.  This is a fun conversation. We wrap the show with a preview of The Trek's brand new podcast- Walking Distance, a Triple Crown of odd firsts, another edition of backpacking advice of the day, and some history of how North Carolina's tallest mountain played a role in the death of the person its named after. Do you think we should we have 7th place trophies?High-end wine is as much of a hoax as the art world is and as much of a hoax as a high-end restaurant charging $10K for a a once in a lifetime meal. It's as simple as supply and demand. Is a stock price a hoax? My answer? Yes and No. I used to think that the amount I was being paid for my speaking engagements was a hoax, but then I realized that I was getting compensated for what I was doing for that event. Is an actor quietly getting $8 Million for a movie a hoax, as opposed to an athlete who constantly gets ridiculed for being over-paid? It's all an arbitrage. That same actor is putting people in the seats and ad budgets are being leveraged against the appeal of that actor/actress.So, can I taste the difference between a $10 wine and a $100 wine? ABSOLUTELY. I live it. It's what I do. The beauty of wine is that everyone has their own palette -- similar to how people have different taste perceptions of art and music. It's simple branding. It's supply and demand. My advice? DON'T. DRINK.GOOD.WINE. It's all supply and demand. If you start to taste the good things (first class plane tickets, front row seats, etc.), you'll put yourself in the position to realize it's not a hoax. It's all perspective. It's context baby! Don't complain about it unless you're prepared to never taste it.
