For generations, potable water from the Quabbin Reservoir has been enjoyed by residents in dozens of cities and towns in central and eastern Massachusetts. However, many communities that line the reservoir don't have access to this precious resource, and as a new study looks to expand the MWRA network, many Quabbin-area residents feel they're not getting proper recompense for providing this water to much of the Commonwealth. Sen. Jo Comerford (D-Hampshire, Franklin, Worcester) says it's time to change that. She joins Nichole on the show this week to talk about her new bill on Beacon Hill that she hopes will create more equity when it comes to water distribution from the Quabbin.

How is poetry like skipping stones across the surface of a lake? How might a poem be like an undelivered letter or package? Matthew Zapruder joins the podcast to talk about James Tate's "Quabbin Reservoir," a poem that raises those and other questions—and does so with Tate's gorgeous ear for weird idiom, full of both humor and feeling. The story of the Quabbin Reservoir is a story we've encountered in the past at SMG's ‘Are We Here Yet?' Podcast. Season one guest Levi Baruch and yours truly spoke of the on-going consequences of the forming of the Quabbin and questions of land-use that permeate to this day.  The Quabbin is a utility.  It is the public drinking water supply for Boston and the Metropolitan District. The Quabbin is a place.  It is striking how beautiful it is when one encounters its vastness and seeming purity.  It is also a place of pain.  If you believe a place can have a soul, the feeling that comes to mind when in the midst of the former river valley is: loss.  More than anything the Quabbin is people.  Our guest Elena Palladino intends to tell the story of the people of the Swift River Valley through the lens of three of those people.  Her book, Lost Towns of the Swift River Valley Drowned by the Quabbin tells the story of Marion Andrews Smith, daughter of the largest industrial family in the valley. Willard “Doc” Segur was the valley's beloved country doctor and town leader. The third voice heard from in her book was Edwin Henry Howe, Enfield's postmaster and general store proprietor. Learn More about the Quabbin House Elena came to their story in a very personal way.  Her family resides in the Quabbin House, developed by Marion Andrews Smith which includes parts taken from her family residence in Enfield, MA prior to its destruction to make way for the massive water management project.   Our conversation paints a vivid picture of their involvement in the end of their community and how they and subsequent generations chose to move on following the flooding of the valley to form the Quabbin. We spoke about the road to get there which began in earnest in 1895 and the elements of the Quabbin story which resonate into our time.    Where can I order Lost Towns of the Swift River Valley… Connect with the author on Facebook or Instagram

Before the Flood: Destruction, Community, and Survival in the Drowned Towns of the Quabbin by Elisabeth C. Rosenberg In the tradition of Silent Spring, a modern parable of the American experience and our paradoxical relationship with the natural world. Though it seems a part of the "natural" landscape of New England today, the Swift River Valley reservoir, dam, dike, and nature area was a triumph of civil engineering. It combined forward-looking environmental stewardship and social policy, yet the “little people”—and the four towns in which they lived—got lost along the way. Elisabeth Rosenberg has crafted Before the Flood to be both a modern and a universal story in a time when managed retreat will one day be a reality. Meticulously researched, Before the Flood, is the first narrative book on the incredible history of the Swift River Valley and the origins Quabbin Reservoir. Rosenberg dive into the socioeconomic and psychological aspects of the Swift River Valley's destruction in order to supply drinking water for the growing populations of Boston and wider Massachusetts. It is as much a human story as the story of water and landscape, and Before the Flood movingly reveals both the stories and the science of the key players and the four flooded towns that were washed forever away.

Find the show notes and photos at this link Lost Apples of the Quabbin is a presentation by Al Sax and Matt Kaminsky documenting their 2016 research and quest for mapping out the apple trees in this historical reservoir region. The Quabbin Reservoir was created to supply water to eastern Massachusetts. This construction required moving out the residents and unincorporating 4 towns Dana, Prescott, Enfiled, and Greenwich. Needless to say, this was an extreme hardship for the residents as people, homes and the entire landscape was changed to create the massive reservoir. How big is the Quabbin Reservoir? unlike what I said in the podcast (10,000 acres) it is 120,000 acres Al and Matt are looking for unknown apple varieties that might still be left on the hillsides and mountain tops that were left untouched so many years later. Senate Budget Alert GOAL is asking our members to contact their Massachusetts state senator and ask that they OPPOSE senate budget amendment #888. The amendment would establish mandates to wildlife management programs within the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (DFW) as well as establish a “working group” for those programs. GOAL is well aware that the establishment of a rattlesnake population on a Quabbin island has become very controversial with local residents. All levels of management for fisheries and wildlife have apologized for the mishandling of the project and have placed the project on hold while they hear and address the concerns of local residents and legislators. GOAL has not taken a stance for or against the establishment of a new snake colony. Our concern comes with keeping politics out of the professional management of our wildlife resources and protecting millions of dollars of firearm owner's money! Millions of dollars every year that are collected through excise taxes from the sale of firearms and ammunition partially fund the DFW. It is because of this that GOAL carefully watches how your money is being spent. If we were to allow political mandates like amendment #888 to pass, it would not be a far reach to see future mandates on everything the DFW is involved in. Can you imagine extremist groups lobbying to remove funding for managing deer, turkey, or pheasant hunting? How about mandating working groups to study hunting or fishing in general? Every program that you cherish and pay for would be at jeopardy if we allow mandates like this to move forward! Regardless of where you stand on the snake project, please stand with GOAL and prevent the future politicization of professional wildlife management. Please call your Massachusetts state senator today and ask them to oppose senate budget amendment #888 and protect professional wildlife management.
