Episode 41: From Farm Boy to Banking Innovator: Chad Hoffman's Leadership Journey

What happens when a community bank thinks beyond deposits and loans? Chad Hoffman, President of Richwood Bank, reveals the unexpected journey from traditional banking to becoming a true community cornerstone and industry disruptor.Growing up a farm boy who scraped hog barns in northern Union County, Chad never imagined leading a financial institution. Yet when tragedy struck his family in 1993, he found himself stepping into banking, eventually transforming a modest $68 million bank with 24 employees into a thriving $1.2 billion institution employing 210 people across nine locations.Chad explains how Richwood Bank pioneered an innovative in-branch coffee shop concept. Unable to sell products due to banking regulations, they created a donation model that benefits local nonprofits while attracting community members who might never otherwise enter a bank. This creative solution has generated nearly $1 million for community organizations while completely reimagining what a bank lobby can be.But the innovation didn't stop with coffee. Recognizing the varying needs of their small business clients, Richwood expanded into marketing services, payroll processing, and business consulting – all stemming from their deep commitment to helping local entrepreneurs succeed. As Chad puts it, "Stronger community businesses make stronger community banks."Throughout the conversation, Chad shares profound leadership insights gained over his 31-year banking career. From the importance of finding mentors to the transformative power of team recognition, he explains how his leadership philosophy evolved from numbers-focused to people-centered. His recommended reading list includes Patrick Lencioni, Simon Sinek, and Jocko Willink – authors who have shaped his understanding of purpose-driven leadership.Whether you're a small business owner, an aspiring leader, or simply someone who cares about community development, this episode offers a refreshing perspective on how innovative thinking can revitalize traditional institutions. Ready to reimagine what's possible in your community? Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. A historic manufacturing site in Charleston is undergoing a major overhaul to focus on new economic opportunities…the Appalachian Regional Commission invests nearly $2 million to help connect Mon Forest Towns and promote outdoor recreation tourism…and Appalachian comfort food meets wild game at a new restaurant in Barboursville…on today's daily304. #1 – From STATE JOURNAL – A coalition of city, state and private partners is well on its way toward transforming a massive manufacturing facility on Charleston's East End into a center focused on new economic opportunities. The 9-acre, 110,000-square-foot former home of Kanawha Manufacturing is being overhauled and renovated to become the Charleston LIFT (Learning, Innovation, Food & Technology) Center. The initiative is seeded by funds from the $62.8 million federal grant received by the Appalachian Climate Technologies Coalition (ACT Now Coalition) from the American Rescue Plan Act. According to Andrew Dunlap, director of economic development for the Charleston Area Alliance, there are already three committed tenants for the new facility: Marshall University's Green Battery Research Institute, a food hub/commercial kitchen space and a vocational training center for the Coal Development Corporation. “We're going to have just under 20,000 square feet for a future tenant or tenants,” Dunpap said. “We're out there actively marketing that space right now.” Read more: https://www.statejournal.com/news/historic-manufacturing-site-in-charleston-west-virginia-undergoing-multi-million-overhaul/article_56ce12cb-744c-5e2f-984f-76e5c81aaa8f.html   #2 – From WAJR – The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded nearly $2 million through the POWER Initiative to Woodlands Community Lender on behalf of Mon Forest Towns Partnership for a series of projects to connect towns with the Monongahela National Forest. The investment will help train workers, advance new industries, and build upon the progress toward a brighter future full of economic opportunity in the region. The Mon Forest Towns Partnership is part of a $68.2 million award package and will help develop outdoor recreation economies for 12 coal-impacted communities in eight counties of Monongahela National Forest, according to Executive Director Josh Nease. “We want to promote the region as a cohesive tourism and recreation destination,” Nease said. “It will also advance our work to firmly establish each town as a gateway to the Monongahela National Forest.” The 12 towns and the partnership have been working on projects to make the forest more accessible in the Monongahela National Forest region, including Cowen, Davis, Durbin, Elkins, Franklin, Marlinton, Parsons, Petersburg, Richwood, Seneca Rocks, Thomas, and White Sulphur Springs. Owner and chef Bruno Young trained as a sous chef in Chicago before returning to West Virginia, where he helped open the original Huntington Prime. Young said he was inspired to make Bruno's menu Apaplachian-themed but inspired by international flavors. To learn more, check out Bruno's Spotted Hare on Facebook. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Monday, April 1  Experience a WV tradition with a visit to a ramp dinner or festival--yum! An astronomy club in Jane Lew hopes to educate stargazers with its own observatory. Anglers, pack your fishing gear: The WV Gold Rush returns bigger and better than ever…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV EXPLORER – After a long winter, settlers in West Virginia hungrily welcomed the appearance of the wild leek or ramp, one of the first edible plants to ripen in spring. It became the focus of a tradition of community feasts that has long lingered in rural Appalachia. Local communities traditionally host their fundraiser ramp dinners in April and May. Some dinners are small affairs while others feed more than 1,000 -- but travelers are always welcome. West Virginia Explorer shares this year's lineup of ramp festivals, from the granddaddy of all ramp dinners, Feast of the Ramson in Richwood, to Stinkfest in Huntington, which incorporates art and produce dinners, live music and more. Find a ramp dinner you want to attend and mark your calendar, because these events happen only once a year! Read more: https://wvexplorer.com/recreation/agritourism/ramp-dinners-festivals/ #2 – From WBOY-TV – West Virginia can be a great place to stargaze thanks to its mostly rural areas, high mountains and a relative lack of light pollution. The Central Appalachian Astronomy Club in Jane Lew has made sure to take advantage of this using its very own observatory. Retired Clarksburg Fire Chief and President of the CAAC Joe Gonzalez has always had a love for astronomy. More than 20 years ago, he decided to add an observatory to his backyard after he was inspired by a priest in Morgantown who taught astronomy from his own observatory. However, years after the priest's death, Gonzalez was offered the opportunity to take over his observatory and make it a place where all astronomy lovers could enjoy their passion together. “We set it up and after all the years, soon as we plugged the electricity in, everything worked,” Gonzalez said. As a non-profit, the CAAC's goal is to spread knowledge of astronomy to the community, including letting classes visit the observatory and donating hundreds of solar eclipse glasses to places like Insight Astronomy to make sure the community has access to safe watching of the upcoming solar eclipse. Read more: https://www.wboy.com/news/lewis/jane-lew-based-astronomy-club-hopes-to-educate-community-with-observatory/   #3 – From WVDNR – Anglers, here's great news: The West Virginia Gold Rush will be bigger and better than ever this year and include five times the number of chances to win prizes when the popular trout stocking event returns for its seventh year on April 1. “As a lifelong angler, there's nothing that brings me more joy than to announce the return of this incredible event,” Gov. Jim Justice said. From April 1-13, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources will stock more than 50,000 golden rainbow trout at 68 lakes and streams around the state, including waters in or near 15 state parks and forests.  Of the stocked trout, 500 will receive a numbered tag, five times the number of tagged trout in past years. If an angler catches a trout with one of these tags, they can enter the tag number at WVdnr.gov/goldrush for a chance to win big prizes. In addition to increasing the number of tagged trout, the WVDNR is also giving away exclusive Gold Rush merchandise to everyone who reports their tagged golden rainbow trout catch during the event. If you're traveling through north-central West Virginia, you will find many West Virginia breweries that will let you bring your dog inside. Morgantown Brewing Company gets a “four paws up” from dog owners. Its menu even includes spent grain dog treats for $2, and for humans—deep fried pepperoni rolls, burgers with ghost pepper jack cheese, West Virginia hot dogs and more.  High Ground Brewing in Terra Alta even made a Baby Doge IPA as a tribute to West Virginia's “queen,” Babydog. The good news is that othere is now enough money to connect every home, school and business in the Mountain State that wants it. “There would not be an opportunity to provide, to open up the doors to those types of companies without ubiquitous broadband service throughout West Virginia,” said Mitch Carmichael, West Virginia Economic Development Secretary. West Virginia must deliver its initial broadband plan to the federal government in a month. If approved, the first 20% of the broadband expansion money should arrive in six months and work can get underway. It's hoped every spot in the state will be connected within six years. It became the focus of a tradition of community feasts that has long lingered in rural Appalachia. Scores of community ramp dinners and full-scale festivals are hosted throughout the state beginning in April and continuing through May. From the annual Feast of the Ramson in Richwood to Stinkfest in Huntington, to smaller community dinners, there are plenty of opportunities to get your fill of ramps and their complementary dishes. The Opera House Story Sessions

Richard Hefner is a founding member of the Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, West Virginia's longest-running bluegrass band. Hefner's bluegrass banjo playing and tenor vocals have contributed both continuity and much of the “high lonesome” sound for which the band has become so well-known. He has displayed his banjo skills many times as a victor in contests and at the Vandalia Festival. The group was first organized in 1968 around the foursome of Richard Hefner (banjo/tenor vocal), his brother Bill Hefner (guitar/mandolin/baritone vocal), their late uncle Glenn “Dude” Irvine (mandolin), and the late Harley Carpenter (guitar/lead vocal). They took their name from Black Mountain in their native Pocahontas County. For five years the group worked a weekly radio show on WVAR, in Richwood. They also made regular appearances at local events and regional bluegrass festivals. They recorded their first album in January 1971, “Pure Old Bluegrass”, and in the mid-1970s they followed up with a pair of albums: “Million Lonely Days” and “Talk of the County.” More recent albums include “Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys 1968-1973,” “Live at Midnight,” “Live at The Opera House,” and “Live at Greenbrier Valley Theatre.” Richard currently lives with his wife Maddy in Renick and often hosts informal music jams with some of the best musicians in the region at his home place in Mill Point. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/story-sessions/support

In this episode of Inside Appalachia, we're sharing stories about people with passions like poetry, music, or making hot dogs, and have touched others with their dedication to their craft. Punk Music And Banjos In Harlan County, Kentucky, 20-year-old Bradford Harris plays in the punk band L.I.P.S. When in person shows were canceled because of the pandemic, Bradford began playing the banjo. Eventually, this led to a surprising new talent-- making banjos. Bradford even tracked down a 97-year-old instrument maker to learn the craft.  To see some of Bradford's banjos, search for Harris Banjo Works on Instagram. You can also find Bradford's punk band L.I.P.S. on Bandcamp. Poetry and Social Justice Poet Nikki Giovanni says there are many reasons she loves Appalachia, the region where she was born. An activist for civil rights and social justice, Giovanni has been helping give voice to Black Appalachians for half a century. Reporter Liz McCormick spoke with Nikki Giovanni back in 2015 about her love for Appalachia, and about growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee.  Affrilachian Poet Crystal Wilkinson grew up in Kentucky with her grandparents. She is one of the founding members of a group known as the Affrilachian poets. Wilkinson has a new book called “Perfect Black,” which is set to be released from the University of Kentucky Press in August.  We'll listen back to a 2019 interview Wilkinson recorded for Inside Appalachia back in 2019 about her experiences growing up in Appalachia influenced some of the stories in her books.   Skiing In West Virginia Skiing took off in West Virginia in the 1950s, when a ski area was developed on Cabin Mountain in Canaan Valley. Today there are six ski resorts. John Lutz, a native of Parkersburg, was a huge part of developing the industry in the state. He's been recognized as one of the country's top ski instructors. He also developed one of the first blind skiing programs, brought a professional ski-racing series to West Virginia and created opportunities for thousands of people to ski in our region. He left West Virginia for a while, but as he told Inside Appalachia co-host Caitlin Tan, he found himself missing home.  Old Man Winter-- Helvetia's Annual Fasnacht Festival Like most festivals and events, the annual Fasnacht celebration in Helvetia, West Virginia was canceled this year due to safety concerns from COVID-19. Normally, on the Saturday before Lent begins, hundreds of people gather in this tiny town to frighten away Old Man Winter.  We listen back to a story about the annual Fasnacht Festival from back in 2014, when Inside Appalachia producer Roxy Todd was a fledgling radio reporter. Friends And Family Remember Russell Yann If you live in West Virginia and care about food, you probably know DiCarlo's in Wheeling, where they serve pizzas topped with cold cheese. Maybe you've been to Richwood, a town that claims to be the ramp capital of the world. And you probably know that, when it comes to hotdogs joints, Yann's Hotdogs in Fairmont is on a level all its own. Russell Yann, the longtime owner of the iconic lunch spot, died on Jan. 15. Reporter Zack Harold spoke with Yann's friends and family, and closes this episode with a remembrance of Yann's life and legacy.

For this episode of Latino Rebels Radio, host Julio Ricardo Varela welcomes Lorena Quiroz, a Mississippi immigrant rights organizer to talk about the #FreeThemAll movement (https://twitter.com/hashtag/FreeThemAll?src=hashtag_click&f=live) . Featured image: Richwood Correctional Center (Public Domain) TRANSCRIPT OF WHAT F SAYS IN SPANISH The truth is that we have one request: our freedom. Why? Because of the situation that is happening on a global scale. People are dying from coronavirus. Even in the United States, a world power, a first world power, the hospitals are collapsed. Here we are vulnerable, you understand? Here for us, if an officer comes in, gives us coronavirus, do you think that for us immigrants, the treatment they’ve given us during this whole time, is an adequate treatment? They’re not going to take a face mask from anyone, from any American, to put it on an immigrant. That means we are going to die. You understand? And ICE doesn’t guarantee us any kind of safety. What we need, to not go on too long, is our freedom, because this is about humanity. This isn’t about an immigration treaty, this isn’t about a bond, or a parole, or an asylum case. This is about the fact that we are human beings. We aren’t animals. And everyone is worried, and everyone outside is protecting themselves, and we are vulnerable. Who is protecting us? Who is worried about us? We have families. Mom, dad, siblings, daughters, sons. Our families outside are worried about us. We’re standing our ground here. We haven’t gone to the dining hall for three days. Right now, in the midst of the repression, I’m guessing it’s the prison that has the televisions turned off. ICE came and told us that the news is all lies. To not believe the news. And right now, I don’t know what time it is. What time is it? At four, three forty in the afternoon, the televisions are still turned off, because since we don’t want to go eat, they’re putting pressure on us by keeping the televisions off, we aren’t taken out to the yard, we’re here in the bunker, walking over here, walking over there, we have nothing else to do. All the bunkers are like that. Here there are 287 people. That’s how many are here in Richwood. And right now there are 64 of us here. In fact, there are 60 here in this bunker [on hunger strike]. Four people are eating. Our health up until now is okay. What we don’t want is for the virus to show up and infect us all, and only then to look for a solution. Because what they’re going to do then is they’re going to put us all under quarantine and whoever’s gonna die is gonna die. Because here in this facility they don’t have the means to take care of all of us. Here all they’ve got is four nurses and a doctor who comes once a week.
