Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Nov. 1, 2024. A historic manufacturing site in Charleston is undergoing a major overhaul to focus on new economic opportunities…the Appalachian Regional Commission invests nearly $2 million to help connect Mon Forest Towns and promote outdoor recreation tourism…and Appalachian comfort food meets wild game at a new restaurant in Barboursville…on today's daily304. #1 – From STATE JOURNAL – A coalition of city, state and private partners is well on its way toward transforming a massive manufacturing facility on Charleston's East End into a center focused on new economic opportunities. The 9-acre, 110,000-square-foot former home of Kanawha Manufacturing is being overhauled and renovated to become the Charleston LIFT (Learning, Innovation, Food & Technology) Center. The initiative is seeded by funds from the $62.8 million federal grant received by the Appalachian Climate Technologies Coalition (ACT Now Coalition) from the American Rescue Plan Act. According to Andrew Dunlap, director of economic development for the Charleston Area Alliance, there are already three committed tenants for the new facility: Marshall University's Green Battery Research Institute, a food hub/commercial kitchen space and a vocational training center for the Coal Development Corporation. “We're going to have just under 20,000 square feet for a future tenant or tenants,” Dunpap said. “We're out there actively marketing that space right now.” Read more: https://www.statejournal.com/news/historic-manufacturing-site-in-charleston-west-virginia-undergoing-multi-million-overhaul/article_56ce12cb-744c-5e2f-984f-76e5c81aaa8f.html #2 – From WAJR – The Appalachian Regional Commission has awarded nearly $2 million through the POWER Initiative to Woodlands Community Lender on behalf of Mon Forest Towns Partnership for a series of projects to connect towns with the Monongahela National Forest. The investment will help train workers, advance new industries, and build upon the progress toward a brighter future full of economic opportunity in the region. The Mon Forest Towns Partnership is part of a $68.2 million award package and will help develop outdoor recreation economies for 12 coal-impacted communities in eight counties of Monongahela National Forest, according to Executive Director Josh Nease. “We want to promote the region as a cohesive tourism and recreation destination,” Nease said. “It will also advance our work to firmly establish each town as a gateway to the Monongahela National Forest.” The 12 towns and the partnership have been working on projects to make the forest more accessible in the Monongahela National Forest region, including Cowen, Davis, Durbin, Elkins, Franklin, Marlinton, Parsons, Petersburg, Richwood, Seneca Rocks, Thomas, and White Sulphur Springs. Owner and chef Bruno Young trained as a sous chef in Chicago before returning to West Virginia, where he helped open the original Huntington Prime. Young said he was inspired to make Bruno's menu Apaplachian-themed but inspired by international flavors. To learn more, check out Bruno's Spotted Hare on Facebook. I want to be a voice for the invisibles. (Leslie Nease)What do a Survivor contestant, deconstructing mama of four bigs, former Christian radio broadcaster, life and faith transitions coach, author and newly-minted podcast hostess have in common? They are all named Leslie Nease, our podcast guest this week.Leslie is quick-witted, well-spoken and passionate about coming alongside of people in their ever-evolving spiritual journeys and making sure they feel seen, heard and absolutely not alone. She wants to make the "invisibles" (those of us who are afraid of speaking out about our deconstructing journey for whatever reason) find our voice again, the way she has found her own.On this episode, we explore all the ways we have been shut down, silenced, or spiritually bypassed and discover why it's so important that we discover who we are and why our stories matter (and why it's good that we begin to tell them).Leslie also gives us some really good tips about what's at the root of having a long-term, healthy relationship with your kids, especially one that has ridden all the religious and spiritual rollercoasters that come along with deconstructing toxic faith systems. This one is a goodie, if we say so ourselves. You can find Leslie at the following:Instagram: @leslieneaseWebsite: www.leslieneasecoaching.comPodcast: Honoring the Journey
Leslie has a Life & Faith Transition Coaching business where she walks with others who are going through this difficult transition of deconstructing faith. You can find out more about her coaching at www.leslieneasecoaching.com. Tim Tebow went onto national prominence in college football and beyond. But there was another student there who didn't get the attention as a teen but that quickly changed after graduation.

Social media and talk hosts have recently shared the blame for mass shootings, but these outlets are not the progenitor of ideas like the Great Replacement Theory. They're exploiting the numbers built in darker corners of the internet. Less than a week into the school year, cases of Covid-19-positive students are popping up in schools all around the state. Gov. Phil Scott so far has declined to mandate face masks in schools, but he recommends that students and educators wear masks. It has been left to each school district to decide whether or not to mask. “We're going to always do whatever it takes. We're going to keep kids as safe as we humanly can,” said Brigid Nease, superintendent of the Harwood Unified Union School District, which includes Waterbury, Duxbury, Waitsfield, Moretown, Warren and Fayston. On Sunday, Nease was notified that a student at Crossett Brook Middle School had tested positive for Covid-19. By Monday, 23 middle school students were in quarantine. Nease said she is concerned by the minimal guidance that schools have received from the state. “Each superintendent is really feeling … that we are just out here alone trying to determine what we need to do with what our community will support and what the spread looks like in our own community,” she said Educators are also trying to resist being dragged into the culture wars around masking and vaccines. “I am hearing direct reports of personal fear from principals and superintendents," Nease wrote in her back-to-school letter to the community on Aug. 19. "One of my superintendent colleagues has received a death threat. Some principals are receiving letters from groups threatening to storm the schools on the first day. Leaders are receiving voicemails from very angry community members screaming at them. Today, when seeking out advice and support we were told to access law enforcement.” Nease discusses the uncertainty and anxiety around the new school year and how she and other educators are managing a second pandemic school year.

Episode 83 Melissa NeaseOn February 28th, 2021, Twenty-Nine year-old Mother of three, Melissa Nease, was found dead from a gunshot inside her Ocklawaha, Florida home. Just 2 days earlier, her boyfriend and kids had gone to Tennessee to watch the snow fall. Melissa had recently started a job, and had to work so she could not go on the trip. It was a decision that proved to be deadly. Intruders entered her home on quiet and remote, Guava Pass Drive and perhaps were surprised that she was home. There may have been an altercation. Whatever the case, the killer or killers fled the home leaving Melissa to die alone. The main clue that investigators have to work with is surveillance video from an external camera. That camera captured at least one man fleeing the scene- tripping over a piece of patio furniture as he runs. Someone may recognize him. Police have identified two possible suspects, but no arrests have been made. Melissa's family is desperate for answers. Her sister Amy discusses the case in this episode and shares her fears that the case could go cold.
