“Kill the Indian and save the man.” — Richard Pratt “The life my people want is a life of freedom. I have seen nothing that a white man has, houses or railways or clothing or food, that is good as the right to move in the open country, and live in our own fashion.” — Sitting Bull “The white man knows how to make everything, but he does not know how to distribute it.” — Sitting Bull “Possession—a war that doesn't end.” — John Trudell “We were faint with hunger and maddened by despair. We held our dying children and felt their little bodies tremble as their souls went out and left only a dead weight in our hands. They were not very heavy, but we ourselves were very faint, and the dead weighed us down. There was no hope on earth, and God seemed to have forgotten us.” — Red Cloud “Don't talk to me about Indians; there are no Indians left except those in my band.” — Sitting Bull “We shall live again.” — Comanche Ghost Dance songIn historical terms, it was just a blink of an eye ago. In the mid-1800s, the Great Plains in the United States were still firmly in the hands of nomadic, buffalo hunting tribes. The looming threat of American expansion was still barely noticeable. But things changed quickly, and soon the tribes were locked in an existential struggle with the U.S. for control of the heartland of North America. One man rose among these tribes to lead his people to resisting the inevitable for over two decades. By the time he was 10 years old, the boy who would become the Lakota leader Sitting Bull, had killed his first bison by running him down and putting an arrow through its heart. In the opinion of his fellow tribesmen, his ability as a hunter and as a warrior was only second to his generosity in taking care of widows and orphans. In this third episode of this series, we'll see how the U.S. government forcibly tried to change Lakota culture by outlawing their religion, removing kids from parents, and taking their land through laws such as the Dawes Ac. We'll also discuss the corruption of the agents in charge of reservations, Sitting Bull joining the Wild West Show, adopting Annie Oakley, befriending William Cody, giving away all he earned, Senator Henry Dawes wanting to ‘teach Indians to be selfish', President's Harrison terrible policies, the birth of the Ghost Dance movement, and much, much more.

We had so much FUN interviewing Carla Harrison today, the head honcho (with her husband, John) of the clown family! We laughed so much and her pure JOY and love of life really shines through in all that she does. Carla is married to John Harrison, world-renowned PRCA rodeo clown and specialty act and together they have 4 kids (3 on earth and 1 in heaven), a rental property business, a Wild West Show, a liquor store, and other investment businesses. They truly do it ALL and they do it well! Through a rock solid marriage, an amazing rodeo community and family, and faith in God, they are able to accomplish amazing things. (And get through the really tough times). They exude unconventional living, and if you are the type of person who wants more FREEDOM in their life…then we know Carla's story will resonate with you. Whatever you want to accomplish in life…you CAN. You have to start somewhere, and even though there were seasons of survival and long hours, Carla and John made it happen and now are able to enjoy multiple streams of income while living their dream life. I think the thing that stuck out the most was the confidence Carla has. No matter what she is doing, she is confident that it is going to work out. And if it doesn't, she figures out a way to keep moving forward. She truly has the most optimistic outlook on life, and I think that's the BEST way to live! If you are someone who wants to live a more unconventional life…if you've got some crazy ideas in your head that you really want to pursue (that maybe scare you a little bit)...tune into this episode, because you need to hear Carla's story! It doesn't get much more unconventional than the clown family! Go out in faith, live with no regrets, and take the opportunities as they come! Thank you so much for being here and please share this episode with anyone in your life who needs it!

He was also an inventor, and even a trick-rider in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.Economic hard times brought Walter to Hollywood, when the film industry was in its infancy. At that time, some of Hollywood's silent legends were making their mark on American culture. Among the stars was a German shepherd named Rin Tin Tin. It was in that unique place and time, that Walter and his sons, (Rudd, Frank, and Jack), made their own mark on American movie history. My father's brother, Jack, was the trainer of Toto in the 1939 classic, Wizard of Oz. Dad's brother, Frank, trained Spike, the dog in Disney's Old Yeller. Rudd, my Dad, trained Asta, Daisy, and Lassie, the collie who would rise to super stardom. I worked with Dad from the early 1960's until his death in 1985. I carried on the Lassie legacy until 2002. Then, against my wishes, the Weatherwax family voted to sell the Lassie trademark.Due to my father's genius, we transformed the training of dogs from simple props on a movie set into actors who seemed to behave with human-like emotions. Dad was a transitional figure in Hollywood animal training, and my experiences with him from childhood to adulthood have transformed my life and made me who I am today.I hope that my father's life-long labor of love, of which I am proud to have shared by his side, will be uplifting in a world that - more than ever - needs some inspiration from the past.https://weatherwaxtraineddogs.com/Music Playlist;1. What are you doing in May?   We are discussing some of the fun events happening throughout Oklahoma during the month of May.  If you want to find something new to do this month, check out the show.   The German-American Society of Tulsa steps up by hosting the annual Germanfest, an authentic German experience you never thought could exist in Oklahoma. Guests are invited to sink their teeth into scrumptious German cuisine, dance happily to upbeat polka music and slam back a couple of German beers, among many other activities.   Tulsa is a city on the Arkansas River. It's known for its art deco architecture, mostly in the central Deco District. Landmarks like the Philcade and Philtower buildings reflect a 20th-century construction boom fueled by the prosperous local oil industry.   The annual Oklahoma Steam Threshers and Gas Engine Association's show is held in Pawnee, Oklahoma during the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in May. If your interests find themselves leaning you to the way things were done in the past,   On the western edge of Pawnee, Oklahoma, atop Blue Hawk Peak sits the Pawnee Bill Ranch Historic Site & Museum, the well-preserved dream home and ranch of Gordon Lillie (a.k.a. Pawnee Bill) and his wife, May Lillie. This picturesque historic site offers a wagon-load of family fun. Each summer, the ranch puts on Pawnee Bill's Wild West Show, an extravaganza in the Wild West show tradition. Other events such as the Oklahoma Steam Threshing & Gas Engine Show and the Pawnee Indian Veterans Powwow keep the town hopping. Downtown Pawnee is replete with century-old native stone buildings, unique shops and outstanding eateries such as Click's Steakhouse. Don't miss the well-appointed Pawnee County Historical Society Museum, with its special area devoted to Pawnee native Chester Gould, creator of the Dick Tracy comic strip.   An all-American event, the El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival traces its origins back to Ross Davis, who owned and operated the Hamburger Inn on Route 66 in downtown El Reno. During the Depression, when onions were cheap but meat was expensive, Davis began adding shredded onion to five-cent meat patties in order to make the burgers look bigger. What resulted on the grill of the Hamburger Inn was a hamburger with a tremendous amount of flavor and the birth of a local tradition and delicacy.   The historic city of El Reno, Oklahoma lies at the crossroads of Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail, now known as U.S. Highway 81. Ride an authentic rail trolley through the historic downtown area, stop to shop the antique and specialty stores or savor one of El Reno's famous onion burgers. The burgers are so well-known that they've spawned the annual El Reno Fried Onion Burger Day Festival, where the world's largest onion burger is cooked and served to the crowd. Fort Reno is located four miles west of the city and hosts the Tombstone Tales each fall, featuring Buffalo Soldiers, Indian scouts and World War II German prisoners of war sharing their stories.   Kick-off the start of summer each May with a trip to the Stilwell Strawberry Festival and enjoy free strawberries and ice cream plus endless family-friendly entertainment. Bid on plump, ripe strawberries harvested from local crops in the annual strawberry auction, see which lucky lady is crowned this year's Strawberry Queen or check out the Strawberry Festival Rodeo for exciting rodeo action. Nothing screams summer quite like biting into a Stilwell strawberry.   In 1949, the Oklahoma governor and legislature proclaimed Stilwell as the "Strawberry Capital of the World." Stilwell also serves as a gateway to Lake Tenkiller and Adair Park.   Make your way to Claremore for all the excitement of the annual Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo. Rodeo events include bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, mutton bustin' for the kids, rodeo clowns and a dance following the nightly performance. See area cowboys compete in steer wrestling, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding and more. Vendors will be on-site to sell Western wear and goods to the crowds. Pick up a cowboy hat and secure a spot in the stands for the Will Rogers Stampede PRCA Rodeo, an action-packed event you won't want to miss. Rodeo queens will also be on hand to lead the opening ceremonies.   Claremore also offers a historic downtown area full of unique shopping and dining experiences, the Belvidere Mansion, Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs and the JM Davis Arms & Historical Museum, among other interesting sites to see and things to do.   The Chuck Wagon Festival will include Liichokoshkomo', the Museum's interactive outdoor addition showcasing the diversity of the West with inter-tribal native dwellings, a pioneer village and interactive natural history features. Native American food samples will be available.   The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is America's premier institution of Western history, art and culture. Founded in 1955, the Museum collects, preserves and exhibits an internationally renowned collection of Western art and artifacts while sponsoring dynamic educational programs to promote interest in the enduring legacy of the American West.   Oklahoma City embodies the Modern Frontier and defines its own future. A young city steeped in Native American and Western culture, openness, and an enterprising nature, OKC embraces its roots and continues to pave the way as a center of innovation and entrepreneurship.   #TravelOK #onlyinokshow #Oklahoma #MadeinOklahoma #oklaproud #podcast #okherewego #traveloklahoma #events  #May #festival #concert #music #Tulsa #okc #cowboy #german #rodeo #museum #claremore #food #Stilwell #chuckwagon #chickasawcountry #elreno #onionburger #pawnee

An American showman turned aviator, Samuel Franklin Cody used his imagination, endless courage and engineering virtuosity to become the first man in Britain to fly in an aircraft of his own making. But can he rightly take a place amongst the world's heroes? In this lecture, historian Peter Reese tells the story of how a man moved from performing a Wild West Show to becoming an aeronautical pioneer by building and flying some of the earliest man-carrying kites and aeroplane, before showing how, once the War Office declared against constructing aeroplanes in favour of airships, he raced his own aeroplanes and outflew his contemporaries. Peter Reese addressed the National Aerospace Library's volunteers on 29 November 2021 and the podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

As long-time listeners know for sure, we're not fans of the picture-perfect image of Tuscany that is so popular with foreigners. According to us, in order to figure out the real character of this land you have to look away from the manicured countryside and delve deep into the more savage parts of the land we call home. The wild region that lies across the Southern border with Latium has become integral to Tuscan character, providing us with many myths and legends. A few weeks ago we told you the story of Domenico Tiburzi, the Tuscan Robin Hood - now it's time for another Maremma legend, the one about the "butteri", the Tuscan cowboys that back in 1890 won a bet against none other than Buffalo Bill. When his Wild West Show arrived in Rome, he challenged the locals. He would give them the equivalent of a year's pay if they were able to tame and ride the wild horses he brought across the Atlantic for five minutes. Under a driving rain, the "butteri" were able to complete the task, drawing massive cheers from the crowd. While this legend is known and cherished by all Tuscans, some not-so-minor details are left aside. Despite this, "butteri" have come to represent the heart and soul of Maremma, with their "uniform" becoming very popular. As with their American cousins, "butteri" are nowadays barely surviving, now that the massive ranches they worked in have been broken up and the wild marshes have been drained in the 1930s. You can still see how they lived and worked in the past in many shows that are organized around Grosseto in the summer. Listen to the story of the Tuscan cowboys in this week's episode. Sitting Bull was a leader of the Sioux Nation (from Hunkpapa Tribe) who directed the efforts of the Souix warriors including those led by Crazy Horse who managed to win the battle of Little Bighorn to defeat General George Custer on June 25, 1876. Sitting Bull was a steady and deliberate leader who spoke out not only for his people, the Souix, but for all Native Americans regarding their treatment by the US Government and especially the US Army. Sitting Bull eventually went to Canada for exile and refuge from the unrelenting US Army (following the defeat of Custer and the 7th Cavalry), but returned to the US once his people faced starvation. Sitting Bull and his people were very disappointed that the US had destroyed the buffalo herds which were their source of food, clothing, and shelter. On surrending to the US Army, Sitting Bull spent years on the reservation and even went around with Buffalo Bill Cody to participate in the very popular Wild West Show. During the Wild West Show, Sitting Bull reached many Americans gaining their support. The US Government decided to disallow Sitting Bull to continure the Wild West Show with Buffalo Bill and sent him back to the Souix Reservation. Sitting Bull remained a man of HONOR throughout his life as a leader of his people (in contrast to the way the US Government treated him and the rest of the Native Americans). As a warrior for the Souix Nation, Sitting Bull was an Eagle. For his tireless work defending the rights of all Native Americans, he is considered a Hoss indeed!
