The 2016 film Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an adaptation by Waititi of Crump's novella Wild Pork and Watercress and would go on to be one of the most successful films from New Zealand.  The story centers on the relationship between a “juvenile delinquent” Ricky Baker (played by Julian Dennison) who is on the run from child protective services along with his cantankerous uncle Hector Faulkner (Sam Neill) in the bush. Together they learn to live off the land, trust each other, and form a family  Much of what takes place in the novella is in the 2016 movie that uses gorgeous locations in the New Zealand bush plus amazing performances by an array of local actors including Rachel House as child welfare worker Paula Hall and the director himself as a minister. It opened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and is the highest film in New Zealand with $12million at the box office. The population there is almost 5 million to give you an idea of how much the country supported this film.  Crump (1935-1995) was a legend in New Zealand as a writer, hunter, ad pitchman, and was basically “Crocodile Dundee” before Paul Hogan took over the persona. He and his sidekick Scotty (Lloyd Scott) sold Toyota trucks for over 15 years while he spent a writing career starting in the 1960s talking about the bush country and the people and animals who lived there.  Taika Waititi is one of the country's most famous exports as a comedian, director, producer, actor, and screenwriter. Some of his most famous works include What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbitt. You can tell this is a work of love and we are so excited to talk about it all in this episode!   So, between the original story and the 2016 adaptation--which did we prefer?  In this ep the Margos discuss: The unique life story of Barry Crump The setting of New Zealand bush country  The work of director Taika Waititi  Starring: Hector Faulkner (Sam Neill,) Julian Dennison (Ricky Baker,) Rima Te Wiata (Bella Faulkner,) Rachel House (Paula Hall,) Rhys Darby (Psycho Sam,) Oscar Knightley (Andy,) Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne (Kahu,) and Taika Waititi as the Minster.  Clips used: Ricky Baker birthday song Hunt for the Wilderpeople trailer Ricky badly explains his circumstances Ricky meets Haku Ricky and Hec being chased by Paula and Andy Music by Moniker  Book Vs. As part of our special "Women Caring for the Land" series, we're talking today with Thelma Heidel-Baker of Bossie Cow Farm in Wisconsin. Thelma shares how she detoured from an academic career in entomology—she’s actually a bug doctor with her Ph.D.—to return to her family farm to re-craft a livelihood for her young family. Thelma’s passion for conservation shines as she gives us practical advice on setting up conservation strategies, noting that land stewardship is a journey. She encourages us to follow what naturally fascinates us...which, in her case, is insects. Thelma Heidel-Baker and her husband, Ricky Baker, run Bossie Cow Farm, a small, diversified organic dairy farm amidst the rolling hills of southeastern Wisconsin. Using managed rotational grazing to take care of the land and feed their livestock, Thelma and Ricky also sell organic farm products such as beef, eggs, chicken, and pork direct to local customers.

We have been reporting from the Fighting Spirit Film Festival since it started back in 2016. Now in its fourth year, the event has grown to become the UK's largest martial arts movie festival; a two-day celebration which welcomes some of the genre's biggest names and best talent. As well as screening some of the hottest new feature films from around the world, the festival also provides an opportunity for up-and-coming, independent filmmakers to have their movies shown on the big screen. This spirit of collaboration and inclusivity strikes at the heart of what makes the festival such an inspiring event. This episode - recorded live at the 2019 Fighting Spirit Film Festival - features conversations with a number of key people involved in the independent martial arts movie scene, from established stars to talented young actors and filmmakers destined to become the next big thing. It's the big THREE OHHH! Episode 30 sees Will and Joe return from Exploding Helicopter - your premier podcast for exploding helicopters. BOOM! This time we’re reviewing Joe’s choice Taika (THOR. RAGNAROK) Waitit’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople There’s no hiding that Flixwatcher are BIG Taika Waititi fans, currently our highest scoring Flixwatcher film is his comedy horror What We Do In the Shadows, so we were pretty happy to review this. The plot is pretty simple, Ricky Baker is a pretty bad egg and ends up on the run with his adopted Uncle Hec - the whole film works because of Waititi’s warm, sweet and daft humour and performances from Julian Dennison and Sam Neill. There are some moments where, quote Will it feels like it’s “trying too hard for quirk”, but its hard not to fall for the films charm, silliness and Kiwi humour. Scores It doesn’t beat What We Do In The Shadows - honestly though what will? - but scores full marks on the recommendability and overall scores a very respectable 4.1. A charming pick me up from the weird, uncertain reality we’re living in today. What do you guys think? Have you seen Hunt for the Wilderpeople? What did you think? Here's a kung fu movie double bill for the final episode in the first season of Kung Fu Movie Guide podcasts. Join me as I have a quick chat with the legendary Korean-born Hapkido master and former action star Hwang In-shik, famous for his role in the 1972 Bruce Lee classic The Way of the Dragon, and his work with Jackie Chan in The Young Master and Dragon Lord. The person I have to thank for organising the interview is my second guest on the show, Ricky Baker. 'Kung Fu Ricky' has dedicated his life to the promotion of Hong Kong and kung fu cinema. His work as part of the Eastern Heroes label alongside film expert Toby Russell has seen him publish books, magazines and documentaries on kung fu cinema, as well as provide Hong Kong movie stars with their first taste of western exposure, hosting events with the likes of Chow Yun-fat, Donnie Yen, Jet Li and Gordon Liu. His work in championing the golden age of Hong Kong cinema continues to this day with the Eastern Heroes shop and website where fans can purchase rare memorabilia and new material, like his array of Bruce Lee titles written by the highly knowledgeable historian, Steve Kerridge. Ricky shares his memories of working in the promotions industry as well as meeting his heroes like John Woo and Quentin Tarantino.

We are discussing Asian cinema with film expert Richard Geddes on this episode of the Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast. Richard works for the independent UK DVD label Terracotta Distribution, which was borne out of the Terracotta Far East Film Festival, launched in 2008. Through the film festival and its associated on-demand and DVD service, Terracotta aims to promote and distribute the latest titles from the various territories across the Far East, including countries like China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and more. In 2014, Richard helped to launch a dedicated 'old school' martial arts imprint, called the Classic Kung Fu Collection. Five titles have now been released on the label, including the Chang Cheh films Shanghai 13 (1984) and The Nine Demons (1984), Godfrey Ho's The Dragon's Snake Fist (1981), Chen Ming-hua's The King of Fists and Dollars (1979), and William Cheung Kei's Hero of Shaolin (1984). During our chat, we talk about the difficulties facing independent DVD labels in the modern age, where online streaming services and torrent sites have had a huge effect on the sales of physical media. We also share our mutual respect and affection for the Eastern Heroes video label, run by kung fu film enthusiasts Ricky Baker and Toby Russell (who was our guest on the first episode of the KFMG Podcast). We also discuss the rise of the Chinese film industry, which is set to overtake the US as the world's largest movie market by 2017. Terracotta Distribution also run a number of imprints including an indie label called Sharp Teeth Films and the Asian horror label, Terror Cotta.

Julian Dennison plays Ricky Baker, a rebellious, chubby, twelve-year-old foster thug-life wanna-be who ends up dumped by an exasperated social worker to a childless couple, kind-hearted Bella and her cynical husband Hec, a last-chance effort from the foster placement, out on a remote farm in rural New Zealand. "Bad Egg" Ricky hates his new environment about as much as he's hated everyplace else he's been, choosing to run away at his first opportunity, only to find that he hasn't a clue where he can go or how to survive out in the wilderness that surrounds the farm. However, circumstances result in injured Hec and Ricky, who is adamant about never returning to foster child services, stuck out in that wilderness, becoming misunderstood fugitives caught up in a high-publicity manhunt (hence the title), and Ricky's going to have to learn "the knack" of survival out in "the Bush" of New Zealand.

The Harold & Maudecast Movie Reviews - Hunt for the Wilderpeople by Sarah Mason & Jake Essoe HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE written and directed by New Zealand actor/writer/filmmaker Taika Waititi (WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS), is one of the best films of the Summer. Waititi adapted the screenplay from the novel by Barry Crump. It follows the story of Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), a bad egg, who by circumstance finds himself on a journey into the New Zealand Bush with his newly adopted Foster "uncle" Hector, brilliantly played by the great Sam Neill. After an award nabbing tour of the festival route, the film opened in the US on June 24th. We won't insult the film's intelligence by labeling it a mere "Feel Gooder" it's oh so much more. Newcomer Dennison is phenomenal as Ricky Baker, equal snaps to the wonderful supporting cast and Waititi is poised to emerge as the next genius storyteller. 9.5/10 on the Justice & Doom Meter. Much Justice!

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a film written and directed by Taika Waititi, based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Trump. It opened in New Zealand on March 31st 2016 and set box office records, which is no surprise because the film is phenomenal. It follows the story of Ricky Baker played by Julian Dennison, a young delinquent from the city. He is sent by child welfare to live deep in the country with foster parents Bella, played by Rima Te Wiata, and Hec, played by Sam Neill who Ricky calls Aunt and Uncle. Bella is very fond of Ricky and they quickly form a strong bond, but Hec clearly doesn’t want to be part of Ricky's life. Shortly after Ricky is settled and loving living with Bella, she is found dead by Hec. Child welfare send them a letter informing them that Ricky will have to be sent to another foster home. Ricky runs away into the bush because he wants to stay, Hec follows him to bring him back. Child welfare arrive to find a house empty and presume Hec has kidnapped Ricky. A national manhunt ensues. The film shows the journey Hec and Ricky while they are being pursued by both the police and Child welfare. The cinematography was beautiful in showcasing New Zealand’s beautiful mountains and rivers. The film combines a beautiful musical score with odd pacing and clunky, witty humour that reminded me a bit of the Australian TV series Around The Twist. The film was really fun and a joy to watch. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a beautiful film that explores themes about belonging, family and loyalty. It runs for 101 minutes and is opening in select cinemas on May 26th Review written by Ebony Beaton. Review read aloud by Lee Klein-ButlerSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
