It's December 31st, 1999. The last party before Y2K. That's the setting for the new A24 movie written and directed by Kyle Mooney. Mooney is known for being a Saturday Night Live cast member from 2013 to 2022. In his directorial debut, he directs Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, Tim Heidecker, and Alicia Silverstone. Mooney is also in the film, along with somebody special who shows up in the third act that we won't spoil here. The movie features a stacked late 90s soundtrack. This could be a late 90s nostalgia slam dunk, but is it? We'll let you know in this packed episode we assembled for Y2K!

In this week's episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo rewinds to a pre-digital apocalypse while chatting with Kyle Mooney about his upcoming film, “Y2K.” The comedy follows two high school outcasts determined to crash the biggest New Year's Eve party of their lives on December 31, 1999 - the dreaded eve of Y2K. When the clock strikes midnight, the night spins wildly out of control in ways they never expected. Written and directed by Mooney (“Saturday Night Live,” “Brigsby Bear”), the movie stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Fred Durst, Julian Dennison, Kyle Mooney and more. During the podcast, Mooney shared how his long-standing fascination with the Y2K phenomenon and teenage nostalgia led to the creation of “Y2K" and much, much more. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theplaylist/support

Send us a Text Message. This week on Fabulous Film & Friends we've jumped on that bandwagon and got a full fledged case of Deadpool-mania!That means we're going to discuss all three of Ryan Reynolds happy little R-rated capers which started in 2016 with Deadpool directed by Tim Miller, starring Ryan Reynolds, TJ Miller Morena Baccarin, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapicic, Ed Skrein, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni and Gina Carano. Then continued with 2018's Deadpool 2, directed by David Lietch and starring pretty much the same cast minus Skrein and Carano with the addition of Josh Brolin, Zazie Beets, Julian Dennison, and Rob Delaney. And capped off with the most marketed and hyped movie of my lifetime, 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Mr. Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as well as a good portion of the previous supporting cast in cameos along with Matthew MacFadyen and Emma Corrin as villains. I'm Gino Caputi and my solitary guest today is author, hypnotherapist and comic book shop royalty Joe Field. I have to announce that Deadpool & Wolverine raked in 440 million over the July 26th 2024 weekend, the highest opening weekend box office haul for an R rated film ever. Was it Ryan Reynolds' and Hugh Jackman's over-the top marketing strategy of appearing on nearly every talk show and commercial for a month that helped or hurt its box office. Could it have been more if they hadn't seemed so transparently mercenary? Before we get into it, the synopses:Deadpool 1-3 are about Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. the “Merc with a Mouth” a cynical 4th wall breaking character who makes scores of naughty puns while killing bad guys in over-the-top grotesque CGI enhanced ways. His powers are just like Wolverine's, he's unkillable because he heals and regenerates faster than it takes for his body's functions to shut down due to loss of blood. Or something like that. Hamish Bennett and Paul Middleditch talk about the story behind the film and working with the incredible cast. Uproar is set in New Zealand in 1981, when the arrival of the South African Springboks sets off nationwide protests against apartheid and racism. Uproar is set in New Zealand in 1981, when the arrival of the South African Springboks sets off nationwide protests against apartheid and racism. Josh Waaka, played by Julien Dennison, a 17-year-old of mixed race who has been a passive bystander all his life, is suddenly forced to stand up for himself, his whānau, or family, and his future. Dennison's acting is superb, filled with humor and emotions. You can also watch the interview on Eagles Overseas' Youtube page: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo6u8acnpDyxri0a3pcJ1cQ

Also, we talk about his Houston teammates, and what are Davy's international plans? Does he have USA Eagles' plans once qualified? Bill also teases an upcoming interview with the directors of the film, Uproar, which was just released in limited theaters in North America this week. Paul Middleditch and Hamish Bennett talk about working with stars, Minnie Driver, Rhys Darby and Julian Dennison on this film based on actual events in 1981 when South Africa Springboks toured New Zealand during Apartheid and how a 17 year-old student, played by Julien, is forced to get off the fence he has actively sat on all his life to stand up for himself, his Maori family and his future in this heartwarming story of identity. There's a new film called ‘Uproar' that comes out in Australia this week, it stars Julian Dennison, Minnie Driver and the exquisite Rhys Darby. Set around the 1981 springbok tour of NZ, it's as hilarious as it is staggering in how powerfully it tells the story of a kid trying to figure out who they are, at the same time as a community trying to figure out who they are - and indeed the start of a whole country trying to figure out who they are. What is wonderful about this film is that it is based on a true story. The life story of the brilliant director Paul Middleditch. Paul has been on the show before - he's the absolute genius behind the kind of commercials that you never ever forget, the brilliant series of ads for Australian Lamb the unforgettable commercials for Carlton Draught (including one which involved hundreds of extras charging across a field towards each other) and the hands-down classic Yellow Pages campaign with the immortal line “Not Happy Jan”. What makes this film even more unique is that while Paul is directing a film that he literally lived, the screenplay was written by his extraordinarily talented wife, the acclaimed writer and director Sonia Whiteman. Now as I mention in this episode - it's rare that my wife and I can build something from Ikea without getting shitty with each other. And here is a couple who've been together for 23 years, with a beautiful family, managing to take an idea from inception to pitch to production - and they're still together. The film is magnificent. I cried twice, Audrey cried about five times. But how these two work together and the way they speak about each other - that's proper couple goals. I adore these two humans. I can't wait for you to get to know them. Laughter is not usually something associated with the 1981 Springbok Tour but a new film manages to inject some lighter moments into a seminal period in Kiwi history. Uproar is a coming-of-age film starring Hunt for the Wilderpeople's Julian Dennison as 17-year-old Josh Waaka. As a Maori kid in Dunedin in the '80s, he's treated as an outsider at his school until his talent as an actor is discovered by his drama teacher - played by Rhys Darby. He's introduced to a young Maori woman, Samantha , played by Erana James - who helps get him involved in the anti-Tour movement. Uproar had its debut at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this month and is out in cinemas now. Julian and Erana speak to Kathryn about what it was like to go back in time for this film - and how its themes are still relevant today.
Julian Dennison and James Rolleston are familiar faces to fans of kiwi films. The pair started acting young, starring in Taika Waititi's Hunt for the Wilderpeople and Boy, respectively. The award-winning actors returned to New Zealand screens October 5th with the highly anticipated local feature film Uproar, a story about connection and finding your place in the world, set during the Springbok protests of 1981. Dennison plays the protagonist of the film, Josh Waaka, while Rolleston plays his older brother Jamie. “Jamie and Josh are both Māori and go to a very Pākehā school,” Dennison told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame. “So, it's about Josh finding his Māoridom, also finding himself.” While the outdated fashion might be the first difference viewers notice, it's not the only part of the film that kiwis might find unfamiliar. “It was hectic,” Rolleston told Tame. “The things that were happening back then, around the Springbok tour.” “Before the film, I just knew that there were some marches that didn't go too well, that kind of thing. I wasn't too clued up about it.” “They don't really teach you at school,” Dennison agreed. In terms of the characters themselves, Dennison found himself acting from experience. “I felt like I could relate to him a bit,” he told Tame. “Going to an all-boys school that was predominantly European.” “That thing of being too brown for school, but also being too white for some cliques outside of school.” The film is a journey of self-discovery for Josh, not only finding himself beyond where he fits in school, but also within his family and culture. Both actors are hoping that this film will be an inspiration for people to find those cultural connections, to connect with their Māoridom in a way they hadn't previously. “I hope people walk out of there going, “Yeah I'm going to start the journey.”” “You see the Māori ways come up in the film,” Rolleston said. “Which is good for people to see, especially our young people.” “I feel like this film is going to bring up some good conversations,” Dennison told Tame. “I think this movie will, you know, cultivate people to talk about this stuff.” LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kofi, Blake & Rich dive into the New Zealand bush for director/writer Taika Waititi's coming-of-age film about a nationwide manhunt for a boy (Julian Dennison) and his foster father (Sam Neill). "Wilderpeople" is a cheeky film that plays with the perspective of young Ricky and his relationship with old Hec - two people who are emotionally broken and stumbling towards healing with each other. Ricky's foster mother (Rima Te Wiata) inspires us to discuss how we find family and home outside of our bloodlines. A child welfare worker (Rachel House) provokes conversation about how the foster care and penal systems can intersect. And a ridiculous eulogy (from Waititi himself) has us spellbound with thoughts of a heavenly path lined with burger rings, Fanta and "the yummiest treats you can imagine."Clips in this podcast are ©Defender Films/Piki Films

Book Vs. Movie Hunt for the Wilderpeople Barry Crump's 1986 Novella Vs the Taika Waititi 2016 Film The Margos search for their inner Kiwi in this examination of one of the most creators from New Zealand--writer Barry Crump and filmmaker Taika Waititi. The 2016 film Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an adaptation by Waititi of Crump's novella Wild Pork and Watercress and would go on to be one of the most successful films from New Zealand. The story centers on the relationship between a “juvenile delinquent” Ricky Baker (played by Julian Dennison) who is on the run from child protective services along with his cantankerous uncle Hector Faulkner (Sam Neill) in the bush. Together they learn to live off the land, trust each other, and form a family Much of what takes place in the novella is in the 2016 movie that uses gorgeous locations in the New Zealand bush plus amazing performances by an array of local actors including Rachel House as child welfare worker Paula Hall and the director himself as a minister. It opened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival and is the highest film in New Zealand with $12million at the box office. The population there is almost 5 million to give you an idea of how much the country supported this film. Crump (1935-1995) was a legend in New Zealand as a writer, hunter, ad pitchman, and was basically “Crocodile Dundee” before Paul Hogan took over the persona. He and his sidekick Scotty (Lloyd Scott) sold Toyota trucks for over 15 years while he spent a writing career starting in the 1960s talking about the bush country and the people and animals who lived there. Taika Waititi is one of the country's most famous exports as a comedian, director, producer, actor, and screenwriter. Some of his most famous works include What We Do in the Shadows, Thor: Ragnarok, and Jojo Rabbitt. You can tell this is a work of love and we are so excited to talk about it all in this episode! So, between the original story and the 2016 adaptation--which did we prefer? In this ep the Margos discuss: The unique life story of Barry Crump The setting of New Zealand bush country The work of director Taika Waititi Starring: Hector Faulkner (Sam Neill,) Julian Dennison (Ricky Baker,) Rima Te Wiata (Bella Faulkner,) Rachel House (Paula Hall,) Rhys Darby (Psycho Sam,) Oscar Knightley (Andy,) Tioreore Ngatai-Melbourne (Kahu,) and Taika Waititi as the Minster.
