“The journey ahead will be too much for you! God says to Elijah (See 1 Kings 18 and 19). For those who have been champions, for those who have felt like nothing but losers. For those disappointed, discouraged, despondent, confused, misused, and abused: The journey will be too much for you! Enough with the lie that 'God will never put more on you than you can stand.' That's nowhere near an accurate statement and will not hold up under thoughtful, theological, or experiential analysis. Sometimes life will collapse on you with the weight of multiple lifetimes; there will be too many challenges; too many burdens; too much tragedy. It happens with the news of a single, solitary catastrophe - or with the slow, accumulating of day to day weariness like silent, falling snow. Either way, sometimes it is all more than you can take. Sometimes life will break you. "But I know, as I read the history of our ancestors here in the Scriptures, and as I review my own life and the lives of those who kept faith to the end and beyond, is that God has a way of showing up and picking up his children when they have reached the very end of themselves. There is something about coming to the absolute end of strength, when another step cannot be taken; when another war cannot be fought; when another threat cannot be answered; when another precept cannot be believed; when another creed cannot be recited; when another day cannot be faced: Only then does God become God to the one who desperately needs God."

This week the Deadpod returns to Milwaukee for the second set of the band's performance from May 30, 1980.  A fine Scarlet>Fire opens this set, including some excellent jamming in the transition (by the way check out this week's Deadcast for an excellent discussion of 'Scarlet Begonias' here: https://www.dead.net/deadcast) A seemingly short 'Playing In the Band' follows, but there is some excellent improvisation going on in the transition to a sweet drum segment that follows.  'Not Fade Away' flows into the 'Black Peter' and then into an excellent 'Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad'. Bobby ends the set with a nice 'Good Lovin' but the boys really get worked up on the 'Alabama Getaway' encore.. not to be missed..    Grateful Dead Milwaukee Auditorium Milwaukee, WI 5/30/1980 - Friday Two     Scarlet Begonias [9:18] > Fire On The Mountain [10:17] Playing In The Band [13:49] > Drums [7:39] > Space [2:20] > Not Fade Away [5:32] > Black Peter [8:50] > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad [7:21] > Good Lovin' [7:01] Encore     Alabama Getaway [4:25]   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod053124.mp3  Have a fabulous week! thanks for picking us up!

This week, next generation Ozark original folk, bluegrass and old-time musicians recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, interviews with these budding artists. A defining characteristic of folk music is its translation from one generation to the next. Traditional songs and melodies travel not only across oceans, mountains and cultures but also through time as they are passed down. Each new generation of musicians leaves their mark on these cultural artifacts as they experience them and this has not changed. Within the mission of Ozark Folk Center State Park is a desire to provide an environment for this cultural translation to take place. The park’s Music Roots program in local public schools in combination with performance opportunities at Ozark Highlands Theater have provided a rich medium for propagating a steady stream of young traditional musicians. We’re proud to offer this small sampling of the next generation of Ozark originals. Featured on this special episode of OHR… The unbridled energy and vertical ascendancy of the band Taller Than You will have you up and dancing. This six piece old-time Ozark original string band features an unusual lead instrument, the hammered dulcimer, played by vocalist and award winning hammered dulcimer maestro Ben Haguewood. Another award winner, Kailee Spickes brings her championship old-time fiddling as well as backup vocals. Old-time clawhammer banjo champion Grace Stormont rounds out the rhythm and lends her amazing vocals. Chandler Spickes provides some smooth guitar and Gresham McMillon fills out the low end on upright acoustic doghouse bass. Up and coming Ozark original bluegrass phenomenon Southern Strings band straddles the line between traditional and modern. This bluegrass quintet can old-time with the best of them while bridging their unique modern acoustic sound to tunes from a variety of genres. The band is lead by vocalist and guitar whip Sophia Wright. Multi award winning fiddler and vocalist Mary Parker provides an impeccable virtuosity. World champion clawhammer banjo Jedi Lillyanne McCool shows her mastery of the three finger Scruggs banjo style. Mandolinist Isaac McCutchen rounds out the rhythm and style with his soulful voice, and Luke Nentrup brings it all together with his vocals and versatility on upright acoustic bass. Also featured on this episode is Southern Strings banjoist Lillyanne McCool’s winning performance at the 2019 old-time clawhammer banjo contest held during Grandpa Jones Tribute Weekend at Ozark Folk Center State Park. We’ll close the show with a rare performance by vocal prodigy Carolina Mendoza that is guaranteed to make you weep like a baby. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1973 archival recording of a very young Ozark original Greg Moody performing the traditional folk song “Going Down this Road Feeling Bad,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Author, folklorist and songwriter Charley Sandage presents an historical portrait of the people, events and indomitable spirit of Ozark culture that resulted in the creation of the Ozark Folk Center State Park and its enduring legacy of music and craft. In this episode, Charley gives us a glimpse into pioneer survival techniques and the proper use of a “froe,” explained by long time Ozark Folk Center craftsman and musician Robert Gillihan.

It’s Just Metal, Joey by Joe Russo What a badass move by Phil! He took a chance on a guy (me) who had never really listened to the Grateful Dead, except begrudgingly at parties or quitting my high-school band ’cause they wanted to play “Fire on the Mountain.” It just wasn’t my thing. Our paths crossed in 2006, when Marco Benevento and I were play-ing with Mike Gordon and Trey Anastasio and we did some dates with Phil & Friends. We played together at The Jammys and did “Casey Jones” and “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad.” I was yelling out, “Guys, I don’t know this song. How does it end?” These were two of the easiest starter tunes, and I didn’t have a clue. I asked Phil, “Hey man, is there an ending?” He just laughed at me. For him to tap me for Furthur three years later was such a badass move. He knew I didn’t know anything about this, and I do think that was his plan. Why are we going to have people just regurgitating what he and Jerry and Bob did? Let’s share these songs that we wrote, that are clearly important songs, and let’s get some new information on them. That’s such a punk rock move to hand over something so cherished to a bunch of as*holes who have no idea what they’re getting into. I’m thankful every single day for that opportunity. He brought me into this world, and it changed my life in so many ways. When Terrapin Crossroads opened, I was pretty much the house drummer for Phil for months and months. It was me and Phil and whoever else was brought in. I was pretty much on every single gig. I remember Neal Casal coming in, and I believe that’s where we first met. Phil never gave anybody a set list and never gave us tunes to work on in advance. One of the first gigs, Phil said, “We’re going to play ‘Terrapin Station.’” Neal was petrified, just petrified. We got to talking and became fast friends. We were both from Jersey, we both realized we like really shitty hair metal. I had no idea how deep that well went for him. I was trying to help him out. We were taking about Terrapin and Keel and all these shitty metal bands that we both love, intermixed. The next day we were going to play “Terrapin Station,” and I was on the back patio smoking a cigarette. He came up to me and told me, “Joey, I fu*king got this sh*t.” He put his legs in an A frame and held his guitar metal style and said, “It’s just fuc*king metal, Joey.” He went and played all of “Terrapin.” He adjusted his view on how to approach it. We were laughing our asses off, and he killed it that night. It was such a lovely cool moment of seeing him have this breakthrough and the connectivity of all the stuff we learned up to a certain point that can inform how well we do in the current state. I always joke that my life in Furthur was like that movie Slumdog Millionaire. The only reason I was able to play all this Grateful Dead music was because, all through the years, these little tiny moments informed the way I played. I played more country/rock singer-songwriter music with my friend Chris Harford in Band of Changes, and all the crazy jazz shit with Fat Mama and odd-time stuff being a proghead as a kid. That all informed me to be the guy for that time to be in that band. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

his week's Deadpod features a beast of a second set.. but what else can you expect from a show from 1972. This one features some great interplay between Lesh and Garcia throughout. Innocently enough the set starts out with a fat Big River followed by a standard Friend of the Devil and Me & My Uncle, things start getting interesting on the Bird Song.. here we find quite an interesting jam after the first verse as Garcia begins to take the music to some very nice places.. personally I enjoyed the ending jam quite a bit. Truckin' follows, always a great vehicle for exploration, and the band takes off following the verses. A short drum segment then leads Phil to bring out what is a quite good Other One, and in fact  this goes into a classic He's Gone and then *back* into the Other One.. the only such combination I'm aware of. This one had some excellent jamming including what is often referred to as the  'Tiger' jam.  I love the transition into He's Gone.. and back into the Other One for that matter! But wait there's more :) .. a hot Greatest Story,.. Comes A Time mmmmm and then a far out Not Fade Away->Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away who needs an encore after that set list!!      Fox Theatre, St. Louis, MO (10/19/72)   set 2 Big River Friend of the Devil Me and My Uncle Bird Song Truckin'-> drums-> The Other One-> He's Gone-> The Other One Greatest Story Ever Told Comes A Time Not Fade Away-> Goin' Down the Road Feeling Bad-> Not Fade Away   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod090514.mp3   Thanks for listening, and for your support of the Deadpod!
