As far as we know the Apostle Paul never visited the church in Colossae. By the time of Paul the city was no longer a strategic hub. However, God still had big plans for Colossae. During his time as a prisoner in Rome Paul learns of the church there from the guy who likely planted it—Epaphras—and writes a letter to them. In it he encourages them to look for fullness not in the false teachings, philosophies, or rituals that appeared to be prevalent among them but in Jesus Christ. Verses 1:15-20 contain one of the best and most suscient theologies of Jesus Christ ever written. Paul emphasizes Jesus's preeminence and full deity throughout the letter, encouraging the Colossians to put off their old self with his sinful deeds and put on the new self, walking with Christ by faith (just as they received him). Jesus is supreme and sufficient, so cling to him and pursue him in all things.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE We begin reading in Acts Chapter twenty-seven  Acts 27:1 Paul finally leaves Caesarea and starts his voyage of some two thousand seven hundred kilometres to Rome, along with Luke and another Christian named Aristarchus, and other prisoners, all in the custody of a Roman imperial guard named Julius. After battling headwinds, they landed at Smyrna on the coast of Turkey, and from there they sailed for Italy. Again they struck heavy winds along the southern coast of Crete, finally arriving at Fair Havens and staying there for several days, and Paul spoke to the ship's officers about the weather being dangerous for long voyages and told them he believed there would be trouble ahead if they went on - perhaps shipwreck, loss of cargo, injuries, and death.  But the officers in charge of the prisoners took advice from the ship's captain and the owner to go further up the coast to a safe harbour called Phoenix for the winter. Then a light wind began blowing from the south so they decided to sail along close to shore, but abruptly the weather changed and a heavy wind of typhoon strength (a “northeaster,”) caught the ship and blew it out to sea. They tried to face back to shore but couldn't, so they gave up and let the ship run before the storm, and sailed behind a small island, and hoisted aboard the lifeboat that was being towed behind them, binding the ship with ropes to strengthen the hull.  The next day as the seas grew higher, the crew began throwing the cargo overboard, all the tackle and anything else they could lay their hands on, but the terrible storm raged on, until at last all hope was gone, but finally Paul called the crew together and said, ‘Men, you should have listened to me in the first place and not left Fair Havens—you would have avoided all this injury and loss! But cheer up! Not one of us will lose our lives, even though the ship will go down, for last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, ‘Don't be afraid, Paul, for you will surely stand trial before Caesar! What's more, God has granted your request and will save the lives of all those sailing with you.' So take courage! For I believe God! It will be just as he said! But we will be shipwrecked on an island.” The storm hurled them along for two weeks on the Adriatic Sea, and they were convinced they would soon be driven ashore; and dashed upon the rocks along the coast, so they threw out four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight. Some of the sailors planned to abandon the ship and lower the lifeboat but Paul told the soldiers and crew that they would all die unless everyone stayed aboard. So the soldiers cut the ropes and let the lifeboat fall off. Paul begged everyone to eat. “You haven't touched food for two weeks,” he said. “Please eat something now for your own good! For not a hair of your heads shall perish!” Paul took some hard baked bread loaf and gave thanks to God before them all and ate a piece of it. Suddenly their spirits lifted and they began eating, prisoners and soldiers and crew, all 276 of them, and they lightened the ship further by throwing the entire wheat cargo overboard. When it was day, they didn't recognize the coastline, but noticed a bay with a beach, and cutting off the anchors and leaving them in the sea, they lowered the rudders and raised the foresail but the ship hit a sandbar and ran aground and began to break apart. The soldiers advised their commanding officer to let them kill the prisoners lest any of them swim ashore and escape. But Julius wanted to spare Paul, so he told them no. Then he ordered them all to jump overboard and make for land, some swimming and some clinging to planks and debris from the broken ship, and everyone escaped safely ashore! They soon learned that they were on the island of Malta, and the people of the island were very kind to them, building a bonfire on the beach to welcome and warm them all in the rain and cold. But as Paul gathered an armful of sticks to lay on the fire, a poisonous snake, driven out by the heat, latched onto his hand, and when the people of the island saw it hanging there, they said to each other that Paul must have been a murderer who may have escaped drowning in the sea,but justice would not permit him to live! But Paul shook off the snake into the fire and was unharmed, and all the people waited for him to begin swelling or suddenly fall dead, but when after a long time no harm came to him, they changed their minds and decided he was a god. Publius, the governor of the island lived on a large estate and welcomed everyone to stay on the property and kindly fed them all for three days. Publius's father had become ill with fever and a severe stomach ailment, so Paul went in and prayed for him, and laid hands on him, and the man was healed, then all the other sick people in the island came and received healing. And three months after the shipwreck when the time came to sail, people gave them gifts and provisions for their voyage. They were able to sail on to Rome on an Alexandrian ship called the ‘Twin Brothers' which had wintered at the island. When they disembarked at Puteoli in Italy, with Paul still under guard, they found some Christians, and stayed with them for seven days and then on the way to Rome Paul and his companions met more Christians at the Forum on the Appian Way, where he prayed with them and gave thanks to God. Paul then went on into Rome and when he arrived, he was permitted to live wherever he wanted to, but still under house arrest. Then three days after his arrival, he called together the local Jewish leaders and spoke to them and told them about the charges that The Jewish leaders accused him of in Caesarea, and of his defence and his innocence and also that he had appealed to Caesar. Paul went on to tell them that it was because he believed that the Messiah Jesus had come that he was still under guard as a prisoner. They replied to Paul that they hadn't heard any reports about him from those arriving from Jerusalem, nor had they received any letters from Judea. They said that they simply wanted to hear what he believed, and that the only thing they knew about these Christians was that they are being denounced everywhere! So Paul invited them to come to his house and they came in large numbers and he spoke to them all day and into the night about the Kingdom of God. He taught them about Jesus from the Scriptures, from the books of Moses and the books of the prophets, and there were many arguments, and only some believed.  Paul finally ended his meetings with them by quoting Isaiah.  ‘Say to the Jews, “You will hear and see but not understand, for your hearts are too hard and your ears don't listen and you have closed your eyes against understanding, for you don't want to see and hear and understand and turn to me to heal you.' (Isaiah 6:9) And he told them that this salvation from God was available to the Gentiles too, and they would accept it. Paul lived for the next two years under guard in his rented house and welcomed all who visited him, telling them with all boldness about the Kingdom of God and about the Lord Jesus Christ; and no one tried to stop him, and later on during his time in Rome Paul wrote the second letter to Timothy in Ephesus and told him he was ready to go and be with the Lord. 2Timothy 4:6 I am prepared for my lifeblood to be poured out, and the time of being loosed from this life is close. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith, and finally, the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the right and true Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have lovingly desired to see him. What is the crown of righteousness and how was Paul able to receive that crown? Righteousness means living in spiritual uprightness and truth before God. He tells us that after fighting a good fight against spiritual darkness, and finishing the race with endurance, he had to keep the faith. and to do this he had to look to Jesus who is the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). And he tells us that we all are included - each in our own circumstances and each in our own spiritual struggles to receive our crowns also. He sums it up as being a spiritual struggle of faith because he knew that none of us could gain that spiritual uprightnes through our own works. Not having my own righteousness, which is from my ability to perfectly obey the law, but the righteousness which is from God through faith in Christ. All his religious life he had wanted to be spiritually upright, but in his natural human spirit he had always failed or fallen short, until when he experienced the power of the Spirit of the life of Christ within him – he saw he wasn't alone in this struggle - he saw his only spiritual struggle was trusting in the Holy Spirit to change his heart. And he encourages us that we are not alone in this either, and that our only spiritual struggle is trusting in God to change our hearts so that we would desire to let the works of God flow through us. The Bible tells us what that work of spiritual uprightness and truth brings about in us … ‘the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness is quietness and assurance for ever' (Isaiah 32:17). The peace is within us – it doesn't come from the circumstances, otherwise we could never have peace - we would always feel stranded and unsure and alone, but he tells us we will never feel alone and stranded. The crown of peace upon our head means that just by thinking of his nearness we have that quietness and assurance that he is near. Jesus said to us In Me you will have peace, but in the world you will have trouble. I have overcome the world - so be glad and joyful. ( John 16:33). His overcoming puts the world's power underneath us.  The world destroys peace among mankind and seeks the world's power to overcome and put down all obstacles, but nothing that the world does to destroy peace can take the peace and assurance from our hearts and minds, because by faith we can experience being lifted up into his power - the power of that glorious crown of peace that awaits us.

Early on in this letter to the young church in Rome Paul is wading into some really confusing stuff. He starts off by saying everyone has sinned and needs Jesus, and the salvation Jesus offers is NOT based on our behavior. If that's true, do we need to be even concerned with our behavior? This new worldview is proving to be much more confusing, especially in a culture that glorifies and encourages hedonistic attitudes. When Paul warns that being too concerned with one's behavior can actually be problematic this is where most of us would just throw our hands in the air and yet Paul continues to unpack something hidden and incredibly good when it comes to considering our behavior in light of what Jesus offers for all people.

ACTS of the Holy SpiritThe Holy Spirit is the central figure in the Book of Acts. This wonderful book not only reveals the beginnings of the early Church, it uncovers how the early believers triumphed in the face of bitter persecution. From their example, we learn how to share with those who have not yet trusted Christ as their Savior and how to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.Lesson 19Acts 27:13-28:16. On his journey to Rome Paul endured a tempest and a shipwreck. When gathering wood for a much-needed fire, Paul was then bitten by a viper! Even that did not discourage him! He merely shook off the serpent and continued to serve!

James 1:22-25,NLT- But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says.Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don't obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. This is why Jesus made statements like, The words I speak are spirit and truth. Proverbs tells us His words are life to those who find them. I wanted to start with this passage because God brought a statement I've made several times to my attention. As long as a humanity can live without God, they will. Make no mistake, human nature will do everything within its power to keep us from discovering the realities of God's new world He has for anyone willing to believe. Here's something very important to remember, God didn't give us His word to condemn us. He gave us His word to reveal our true nature. And if you're like me, you're pretty good a listening to His word, it's the whole doing that gets us. You see, the thing about Christianity, living this new life, actually being doers like James instructs us, we've got to come to terms with the reality that statements like that are only available to the born again. I think sometimes, for many of us we get comfortable in our Christianity and just maybe, not as aware of our new nature as we are our human nature. And that's the driving thought behind our new talk “Two Worlds.” This is Paul's point in Corinthians when he tells us that when we accept Jesus, we become new people. We have a new life. Ephesians 1:11,MSG- It's in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. And with the reality that we are born into a completely new world, which is 100% spiritual, we belong to two worlds. Natural and Spiritual. As a matter of fact the book of Hebrews make it very clear that only God's word can reveal the difference between the natural and spiritual. Something else Corinthians reveals to us is that God's word is designed to be discerned spiritually. And even though confined to this natural, according to Jesus, we're no longer of it. Paul actually takes things a step further in Philippians, informing us that we are now citizens of a heaven. And I know we've discussed this topic many times but God continues bringing me back to this subject. I can't help but wonder if we simply need clarity, further revelation into the realities of our new world. Our new identity. Remember, He didn't give us His word to condemn us, but to reveal our true nature. So when I ask this question, let it challenge you not condemn you.According to the apostle James, how's your doer awareness? Seriously, how often would you say you're applying basic spiritual principles in your daily lives? Can we be real? Most of us, most of the time are more committed to this natural world than our new world because its just easier, it's more real to us. It's what we're use to. That being said, the bulk of our talk will be centered around the one book in the NT that I believe gives absolute clarity on this subject, the apostle Paul's letter the the Ephesians. At its core, it reveals the mystery of God's church in the earth. Just a little history, after spending over two years there, starting a successful fellowship, Paul continues his missionary journey. Some five years later, from prison in Rome Paul writes one of his encyclical letters. Counting on his anointed leaders to circulate them. The ultimate revelation in Ephesians is the church as His body, us in Him, Him in us, expressing the fullness of His reality. Ultimately, it's the Lord's appeal for all of us to participate in Jesus' commission in 5:27 of building a glorious church without spot or blemish. Ephesians 1:3-6,NKJV- Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who HAS BLESSED us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,Spiritual blessing, divine privileges and resources available to those in Christ in this natural world.CEV, For the spiritual blessings Christ has brought us from heaven. As we unpack this, here's the reality we've got to keep out in front of us, we belong to two worlds. Natural and spiritual. 4, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,5, having predestined (guaranteed destiny) us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will,6, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. One of the dominant, recurring themes throughout Ephesians is the reality of who we are in Christ. Maybe our first question should be, can we bring the realities of His world into this natural world? And if so, then how? The very first thing we have to acknowledge and accept is that according to Paul, according to Jesus is that these realities are only available to those who believe. This might help, just like with salvation, Jesus went to the cross for everyone. Atonement is a finished work that is waiting for the individual to exercise their faith and reach into that world and receive His finished work. God had already made the provision. Remember, Jesus is the Lamb slain before the foundations of the world. This is why back in v.6, He made us the accepted in the beloved. And since we've been accepted in the beloved, this revelation Paul gives us from the Holy Spirit is probably the key component in this letter. Ephesians 1:15-19,NKJV- Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints,16, do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers:17, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him,18, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,19, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power. You gotta get this, Paul isn't praying for God to do a something new, he's praying the we can see what God has already done. 18, “That the eyes (spiritual) of your understanding be enlightened” Think about this, according to God's word, we are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. We are new creations in Christ. We have been transferred into His Kingdom. This is why Paul prayed, may the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; That we know what is the hope of His calling,That we know what the riches of the glory of His inheritance is.And that we know what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe. It's as we begin seeing spiritually, comprehending the realities of our new world that we can put into practice what the apostle James is telling us, don't  just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Which word do we do?Seriously, just take one statement from Jesus in John 14, ‘The things I do, you can do also” Lets not kid ourselves, the only word of God we become doers of is the word we can accept by faith. What we need is a NT, “such as I have” perspective. Or according to Paul's prayer, we need revelation of who we already are in Christ. Seriously, according to 1 John our born again nature in this world is just like Christ. Made in His image and likeness. 1 Thessalonians 5:23,NKJV- Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.SPIRITSOULBODY And here's the deal, when a soul is renewed with God's word, we believe Him. At that point our soul and spirit are in agreement, causing the body to come in line. Or in the words of James, we become doers of the word. But when our soul stays in agreement with our body, our human nature, human nature rules resulting in unbelief. And we find ourselves saying things like, if the power of God was working in my life, I'd see it, feel it, experience it, etc… And I realize this concept contradicts popular religious traditions, and this is why Jesus told us, “truth will make you free.” I made this statement Wednesday night and it really stuck with me.Truth is the highest realm of reality. Once we abandon truth, we're left with facts. Example: “There's giants in the land” fact. God said, I have given you the land, truth. Hosea 4:6,NKJV- My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; Because you have forgotten the law of your God. This is why Jesus made statements like, The words I speak are spirit and truth. Proverbs tells us His words are life to those who find them. I'll leave you with Paul's revelation to us, Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who HAS BLESSED us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ

He -proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness- and without hindrance.- This is how the book of Acts concludes. Despite Paul's own chains, the gospel was not bound. And it still isn't bound today. As we conclude our series, I hope and pray the same gospel we have heard penetrate hard hearts and transcend cultural barriers in Acts, has penetrated our own hearts and brought 'times of refreshing' to our souls.

Ephesus: A Congregation in TroubleEphesus was a local assembly of God people on the coast of what is now Turkey. At that time it was a huge metropolitan city especially noted for it magnificent temple dedicated to Artemis. The goddess protector of young girls, also of childbirth/midwifery... You can read about Paul establishing the congregation in Acts 19:1-40 and dynamically drawing them out of a culture dedicated to the occult and sorcery. In Acts 20:17-38 you can read Paul's farewell warning to the elders there about false teachers who would soon attack them like ravenous wolves, and in Revelation 2:1-7 you can read Christ's assessment of Ephesus; they beat back the false teachings, persevered in the truth, but they appear to have lost much of their zeal and enthusiasm for the precious truth revealed to them. After Paul left Ephesus he travelled to Jerusalem where he was arrested, imprisoned, and sent to Rome for a trial. While under house arrest in Rome Paul wrote quite a bit concerning the Ephesian church: the book of Ephesians itself [a very high enthusiastic doctrinal message], plus 1st and 2nd Timothy which are written to Timothy concerning problems in the Ephesus church. Timothy was specifically sent there and commissioned to correct the situation [many aspects of this instruction are applicable to any congregation if necessary].Our purpose to day is to review Paul's instructions to Timothy.Request a free copy of THE CHURCH JESUS BUILT Keep Reading »
