Pastor Shaun & Pastor Mike sit down with Mark and Joani Akers to discuss how Christians should respond to the refugees that are moving into our cities and neighborhoods. Mark and Joani have spent the last several decades serving families seeking refuge in the greater St. Louis area through a ministry they founded in 1989 called Oasis Internatioanl. This organization was birthed out of a desire to live out their faith in Jesus in very practical ways by loving and welcoming our new neighbors who often arrive with very little. If you want to serve or give to Oasis, click the link below. https://www.oasis4refugees.org/ Thanks for listening! We all need ways to guide our attention that allow us to find wisdom, love and freedom in the midst of our lives. This talk reviews three archetypal gateways—Buddha/awareness, Dharma/truth, and Sangha/loving community. Through teachings, guided meditations and a traditional refuge ritual, we engage together in bringing alive these pathways to healing and peace. (Note: Includes Refuges string tying ceremony and chanting the Refuges at end).

As waterfowlers peer ahead to the approaching hunting season, botulism has become a headline in the West and state agencies have released results from their 2024 waterfowl breeding population surveys. Today's conversation begins with Jeff McCreary, DU's director of operations for the Western Region, giving the latest update on avian botulism in the Klamath Basin and the solutions that DU and partners are trying to deliver. We then go across the country with Nathan Ratchford, Dr. Dan Smith, Dr. John Coluccy, and Dr. Mike Brasher to review results from state waterfowl surveys in California, Oregon, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. What were population and habitat conditions like this spring? How do these data inform harvest regulations and our knowledge of duck populations? And what can hunters take from these surveys as we await the release of the much larger U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service waterfowl status report.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast

This episode was recorded on January 4th, 2024. Erin Pizzey, born in China with her twin sister Kate, settled in England after a childhood of frequent moves due to her diplomat father. In 1971, she opened the world's first women's refuge in Chiswick, London, and later established numerous shelters during the 1970s and 1980s. Erin became well-known for her court battles over overcrowded refuges and her appearances on top chat shows, earning a reputation as a crusader for the destitute. Her advocacy extended to squatting in properties to provide shelter. Erin brought domestic violence to public attention, compelling authorities to address the issue. She moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the 1980s after receiving death threats for highlighting female-perpetrated abuse, as detailed in her book "Prone to Violence." She returned to London in 1997 and advocated for male abuse victims, becoming a patron of ManKind Initiative and Families Need Fathers. In 2013, Erin joined the advisory board of A Voice for Men and appeared in the 2016 documentary "The Red Pill." In 2023, she was featured in "Erin: Beyond the Bruises." Erin authored several cult classics, including "Scream Quietly or the Neighbours Will Hear" and "This Way to the Revolution: A Memoir." She believes domestic abuse is generational and not gender-specific, advocating for multi-generational therapy to break the cycle of violence. A Clare TD has labelled the scarcity of women's refuges in the county a "dismal prospect". Independent TD Violet Anne-Wynne has made the comments during a Dáil debate on "tackling all forms of domestic, sexual and gender-based violence". One of the main goals of Cuan - the state agency for domestic, sexual and gender-based violence established last year - is to deliver 280 accessible refuge accommodation units by 2026. Kilrush Deputy Wynne insists it must be made clear if and when Clare will see increased provision of safe spaces.

The Forbes Biological Station in Havanna, Illinois, is North American's oldest inland wildlife research station. Over its 130-year history, it has become one of our greatest sources of scientific information for waterfowl ecology and management. In this episode, Dr. Mike Brasher visits with current staff of the Station – Dr. Auriel Fournier, Josh Osborne, and Therin Bradshaw – to celebrate the 130-year anniversary; pay tribute to its pioneering leaders of the name Forbes, Bellrose, Havera, and others; and reflect on the Station's contributions on topics including wood ducks, migration ecology, aerial surveys, lead poisoning, sanctuary management, wetland management, foraging ecology, and new research on duck foods and the effect of hunting disturbance on bird movements. And hear also what it's like to flip through the pages of an 84-year-old field notebook of Dr. Frank Bellrose.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast
Chris Jennings and Dr. Mike Brasher discuss updates from across the world of waterfowl. Reports are emerging of minor avian flu outbreaks across the US. What do you need to know? Host Chris Jennings is joined by Jay Anglin, WF360 Great Lakes migration editor, and the two discuss current conditions across the Great Lakes Region. Anglin, who keeps a keen eye on the migration in the region went into detail about Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin, while touching on other Great Lakes states. Warmer temperatures have the puddle duck migration stalled out, but Anglin has heard of many hunters overcoming this and having success. For more details, download and listen.www.ducks.org/DUPodcast
