Wild and soft adventurer Sarah Outen rowed solo across the planets big oceans and cycled across the continents. She tells us what the oceans taught her, and how the ocean is such a good metaphor for life. Those big waves that throw you around and sometimes crush you, but how, if you just let them move through, and trust the process, good weather will come back… Sarah tells the back story to how she came to row across the Indian ocean, and how the grief over the sudden death of her father was a key factor to her deciding to row solo. And how that first journey lead to a quest to seek out more oceans and continents link to Sarah's film: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/sarahoutenhome/393996855 website: sarahoutenhome.com We speak about how sometimes you have to just do those things you dream of, if not now, when? How different needs arise as we continue on lives journey The differences between being with lots of people , or in complete solitude out on the ocean The surrendering to the experience - The ocean as a metaphor for life, the way it is always in movement, knocks you down, picks you up, etc. How on the ocean you just have to find a way, to survive, even when you are terrified How to welcome the fear, and keep remembering, that we have to keep going through these processes How life on the ocean can often be easier, less choices, more simplicity, more clarity Fearing coming back on land after 4 months alone at sea The gorgeous word “discombobulating” when describing life… Waste, materialism and the disconnect to our planet, to where we come from How when we feel connected to the earth we feel that deep belonging - feeling of coming home Her difficult journey with PTSD due to being caught for days in a tropical storm on the Pacific Going to boarding school at 8 years old, that has consequences How the storms might even bring you a wife Training to be a therapist How she has now got 4 Donkeys, and is learning lots of donkey wisdom We talk about our relationship to rest, to setting boundaries and being clear in our communication What does settling down mean? The constrictions of labelling and expectations Sarah's ABC of what it takes to row across an ocean: attitude, belief and courage We talk about the beautiful softness in vulnerability Trusting the processes and the fluidity of life Letting go is the chance for letting something new in, for change How the best stuff comes from life not going to plan Trust the mess and bless the mess - you will come out the other side and everything changes Let go of effort, and peace will arrive - Rumi You have to let go to have a go Being scared of our own bubbles - our own mind is our biggest challenge Being with sperm whales and knowing that there is a deep, almost spiritual connection. The connectedness to the universe that came from being alone in nature for so long Disconnection and remembering to reconnect again The importance of nourishing ourselves The best way of surviving life well, is by preparing the territory with softness, care and nurture My website: www.duritaholm.com

When cabin fever first set in during the early stages of the pandemic, we turned to the experts for help: three women who chose to live in isolation for long stretches of time, whether at a fire lookout in Idaho, on a remote Greek island, or in a sea kayak, like Sarah Outen did while rowing solo across the Pacific Ocean. Three months later, and we're still grappling with what it means to isolate ourselves from friends and family. So we decided to check back in with Outen, a British rower, biker, and adventurer who has spent months-long stretches alone in grueling conditions, including a solo row across the Indian Ocean and a four-year, around-the-world solo trip executed exclusively on bikes, kayaks, and row boats. In this week's episode, she shares her tips for making it through the toughest stretches of being alone, stories about a logistically complicated long-distance relationship, and her newfound joy from rest. (That said, she'll likely inspire you to haul your bike out of the garage and get moving, too.) What does home mean to you? Sarah Outen and adventure film producer Jen Randall have captured what it can mean for a round-the-world adventurer in their beautiful film, Home. It follows Sarah’s four-and-a-half year journey around our planet by rowing boat, kayak and bike, charting both her joys and the darkest corners. Sarah has been a hero of mine for years and I was honoured to sit down with her and talk about trauma, confidence, purpose, vulnerability and her new venture into psychotherapy training. Sarah was severely affected by a tropical storm that left her clinging on to her boat for three days before rescue, subsequently developing PTSD and a deep depression in the months after, conditions that stole her sleep and wreaked flashbacks and terrors. With quality therapy she is recovering - and returned to close the loop of her incredible journey - but it has been far from a linear process. She spoke to me about her breakdowns in 2016 and 2018, and how she has opened up about her mental health experiences by degrees, as well as what it’s been like to reckon with being vulnerable on film. We also discuss how her first expedition - a solo and record-breaking row across the Indian Ocean - helped her begin to process grief from losing her dad. This was one of the hardest edits I’ve had to do since starting the podcast; there was interference over the line that was super tough to fix. You will hear some of this, but I hope it doesn’t detract from Sarah’s inspirational story. She is such a warm, down to earth and calm soul and I love her approach to life. You can download Home (soon!) or find a screening through the website. Sarah's also written a book, Dare to Do, charting the raw realities of her adventures, including her terrifying experience in the Pacific. Please show her some love on social and share this story.

This week on the Tough Girl Podcast we talk to Sarah Outen where she discussed her journey from London all the way around the northern hemisphere and back to London by rowing, kayaking and cycling. In order to do this Sarah had to overcome a variety of challenges. She’s endured extreme conditions in remote environments, often being alone for months at a time.  A typhoon during the North Pacific crossing forced a mid Ocean rescue from her rowing boat in 2012 and a hurricane on the Atlantic this summer forced a pre-emptive evacuation after 143 days at sea. She has also kayaked some of the most treacherous waterways in the world and cycled across North America during one of the harshest Winters on record. After 4.5 years and over 25,000 miles, Sarah has made it back home, arriving back on midday on the 3rd November 2015. Sarah shares the following on the podcast: Her background and what’s inspired her to achieve what she’s achieved Becoming the first woman to row across the Indian ocean Turning her dream into a reality Persevering through the most treacherous conditions A typical day cycling from Europe to Asia How to overcome bad conditions  Her highlights and low points Her best memories and highlights from the trip. The people she met  Celebrating the milestones The most terrifying experience on her journey The healing process after a traumatic experience Tips for coping with isolation Dealing with challenge and change What she learned about herself on this journey and what’s next for her! Don’t forget to check out previous episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast! - All links and information on www.toughgirlchallengs.com. Sarah Outen - the first woman and the youngest person to row solo across the Indian Ocean - talks about the drama of her summer at sea and her support for the RSPB's work to save the albatross.  Her 'London to London via the World' challenge was cut short by a tropical storm but that didn't stop her kayaking around Mull later in the summer to see some fantastic wildlife. Plus this month's Step up for Nature gives details of how to make sure the fish we eat is caught sustainably and without threatening the world's endangered albatross populations.
