The line between an adventure and a misadventure is often defined by our decisions, how we manage the challenges that we face and how the experience is remembered afterwards. In this episode, Bruce Wilson returns to share a story that seriously tested his skills to deliver adventure. This is a story from early in his sea kayak guiding career. Afterward, Chris and Jordy share their insights into the lessons that we can all learn from Bruce's experience and how he ultimately turned what could have been a disaster into an exciting adventure for his clients.Key takeaways:Human factors can compromise judgement: These factors include bias, blindness and a lack of foresight.Pressure to deliver: Every guide can succumb to the pressure to deliver an amazing adventure, even when they have concerns about about the wisdom of doing so.Letting people suffer to convince them: Sometimes, a leader has to expose people to a small measure of the adversity they are going to face, so they can understand why following a course of action is not in their best interest.Practice failure: Spending time to practice rescue, recovery and reactions skills effectively, can save time and stress in a moment of crisis.Debrief: Taking time to talk about challenging and traumatic experiences can be the difference between whether a situation is remembered as an adventure or a misadventure.Guest LinksYou can contact Bruce through Wolf Warrior Guide ServicesFollow or SubscribeEnjoyed this episode? There really are few days that aren't great for paddling on Jackson Lake in Grand Teton National Park, whether you're in a canoe or a sea kayak. During a short getaway in early June my wife and I did just that. Embed the picture that accompanies this post in your mind, then listen as I paddle the lake and describe the setting.
There is no better way to experience the Alaska wilderness than from the seat of a sea kayak. Clearly, as professional sea kayak guides, we are biased in that opinion, but that doesn't make it untrue. On today's episode, we go in depth on the subject of sea kayaking, its origin and resources available to you the listener if you have any desire to jump in the cockpit of one yourself. We invite friend of the pod Russ on the episode who just took a sea kayak instructor course through the American Canoe Association to share some of his insights as well. How old is the sea kayak? What should you know before you go? And what incredible encounters might you experience if you jump on board? It's the episode that will make you question your career choice! Paul Caffyn is an absolute legend of sea kayaking. His first big trip was in 1977 when he circumnavigated the South Island over four months. That was just the start. Over the coming years he circumnavigated the North Island, Britain, Australia (that took a whole year) , Japan, Alaska, New Caledonia and voyaged from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to and around the island of Phuket in Thailand. He's notched up over 40,000 miles in his single West Greenland style kayaks , seeing some of the most remote places in the world from the vantage point of the sea. He's written four different books on his various expeditions, and in 2011 was made an officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sea kayaking and water safety. When he's not on the water, he lives on the West Coast, from where he chats to Kathryn Ryan.
Guest Sarah Lugaric was drawn to the study of religion and the myths and narratives that all cultures have to help us understand ourselves and our place in the world. Leaving college without the clearest sense of who she was, but with a job on Wall Street, she learned the culture of business and found that she was still interested in what that said about being human. She didn't love banking, though, and when she finally quit, she took a 30-day sea kayaking trip, rekindling her relationship with nature and herself. She found a consulting company that applied the leadership lessons that had served her so well in the wilderness to organizations and their employees, marrying two important aspects of herself. When she had the chance to work with the captains of industry and the environmental world to bridge cultures and make positive environmental change, the glacial pace of that change and the missed opportunities caused her to take a break, spending time with her growing family, and unlock different paths to help others live with more grounding, authenticity, and security. In his episode, find out from Sarah how navigating the world sometimes takes looking inward and protecting space, time, and that which you love…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. David Berg began working in outdoor education in 1992 as a kayak guide in the San Juan Islands, just after graduating from college. He then spent several years in Southern California teaching open water kayaking, surf kayaking, and expeditions. David finished his NOLS Sea Kayak IC in British Columbia in 1999. His first course was in Baja the following winter. From there, David spent ten years leading Sea Kayaking and backpacking courses throughout Baja, the Pacific Northwest, Norway, and Patagonia. Still, he spent most of his time in Alaska, primarily in Prince William Sound and Southeast Alaska. David also worked for NOLS Alaska for two summers as the Sea Kayak Program Supervisor. David was also a high school teacher and now works with a non-profit that assists high schools worldwide in developing good outside-of-the-classroom learning opportunities. In addition, he co-founded ImBlaze, a digital platform that helps schools expand their internship programmes. David and his wife with their two children live on Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound, where they go hiking, sea kayaking, and sailing on weekends, making more adventure memories along the way. In this episode: [3:35] David Berg talks about his experience with Chris Manchester and the students, where he and Chris woke the whole group in the middle of the night to lift their tents so that the tide wouldn't make the tents wet. Along with the group, he stood with their tents for an hour or so, and he can't help but still recalls that amazing cold night having to lift their tents as the water touches their feet and ankles. The experience sounds magical to us! [14:45] David shares his horrifying incident in Prince William Sound, where he lost food bags because of the big wave. A few years later, he and his good friend Doug went back to Prince William Sound with another group. Because of the past incident, he was paying extra attention to the waves since he was terrified that what happened last time couldn't happen again and doesn't end up hurting or losing someone in brutal waves. Around midnight David heard the glacier calving; he got up and started yelling for everyone to leave for their tent before the wave hit them. As the wave comes closer, it got smaller and smaller and barely hit the beach. For David, this counted as the most embarrassing moment of his life. [26:25] David and her wife Suzanne white took two groups on two courses where the first group did a great job, while the second group was with adults and their kids. They paddled out to Cienega glacier when heavy rain started and kept going for a good 2-3 days, which made the kids cold, and ended up parents telling them to evacuate them. The story gets more intense by the end! [31:06] David tells us about a party called cabin crawl. The party quickly turned into chaos when his fellow instructor and some other guys from another organization got into a fight. The other guy got drunk and was inappropriate with some of the women, leading him into a brawl.
Alaska has thousands of unheard of world class outdoor men and women. On this show we'll hear from one, John Bauman, who completed numerous first winter ascents and sea kayaking routes.
I love being in/on/at/by the ocean, so a couple weeks ago, I tried a new way of enjoying the marine space - through sea kayaking. I took a 2-day-course a couple weeks ago and what started as a fun excursion quickly transitioned into a nightmare of hand-eye-coordination resulting in very sore muscles and a somewhat painful sun tan... So, quickly summarised: a successful excursion. As with anything active, please consult with your doctor before undertaking any physical activities.

Now that "La Recua" is finished and making the film festival rounds, I thought I would share this conversation with Trudi Angel again. Angell has been living in Baja since the mid-'70s. She made her first trip South to attend a 12-day Sea Kayaking course at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Mulegé. Angell fell in love with the people and the place -and stayed six weeks. When she finally returned home to Calistoga, she quickly bought a folding Klepper Kayak, a roof rack for her 1964 Rambler American, and blazed a trail straight back to Baja. Sea kayaking was taking off as an adventure sport just as Baja was on the rise as a travel destination. An opportunity to guide a kayak trip down the coast allowed Angell to launch Paddling South in Loreto. Angell says she was "in the right spot at the right time." With a love for logistics, and a desire to go the extra mile for her clients, she cultivated a great business that she ran for thirty years. While riding on a mule trip with her friend and fellow outfitter, Tim Means, she was amazed by the grace the hired vaqueros showed as they interacted with their families. Angell had an epiphany, bought a horse, and took up riding. Soon, she was visiting ranches near and far. She launched Saddling South in 1987. "This opened up a huge world for me -both for studying the history (of the vaqueros) and learning the Ranch culture." Angell talks about her life and work in this conversation and her deep admiration for the vaqueros and traditional Baja ranch life. She shares stories from the 1000-mile Mule trip (the Mula-Mil) that she organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963-64 expedition by Andy Meling, Joanne Alford, Eve Ewing, and others. Additionally, she shares insights about making "La Recua," a documentary film about a traditional overland pack-mule trip featuring 70-year-old vaquero Dario Higuera, a team of 13, and a cast of 25 animals; also known as "Dario's Dream." TAA #014: Kayaking as an amputeeWhile water sports are generally great fun, they are especially well suited for lower limb amputees: They offer the added advantage of the water carrying most of our weight. An advantage not to be underestimated for many amputees. Swimming, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, surfing - no matter which one of these activities you fancy, they are all great fun and well worth a try. Even more so as they often allow you a completely new perspective on this beautiful planet of ours. There is a whole new world often just a few feet below the surface of the ocean. Trudi Angell has been living in Baja since the mid-'70s. She made her first trip South to attend a 12-day Sea Kayaking course at the National Outdoor Leadership School in Mulegé. Angell fell in love with the people and the place -and stayed six-weeks. An opportunity to guide a kayak trip down the coast allowed Angell to launch her company Paddling South in Loreto. Angell says she was "in the right spot at the right time." With a love for logistics, and a desire to go the extra mile for her clients, she cultivated a great business which she ran for thirty years. "This opened up a huge world for me -both for studying the history (of the vaqueros) and learning the Ranch culture." In this conversation, Angell talks about her life and work, and her deep admiration for the vaqueros and traditional Baja ranch life. She shares stories from the 1000-mile Mule trip (the Mula-Mil) that she organized to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963-64 expedition by Andy Meling, Joanne Alford, Eve Ewing, and others. Additionally, she shares insights about making "La Recua," a documentary film about a traditional overland pack-mule trip featuring 70-year-old vaquero Dario Higuera, a team of 13, and a cast of 25 animals, also known as "Dario's Dream." This week we talk with Robert Young, director of Western Carolina University’s Program for the Study of Developed Shorelines about a project to more accurately determine the cost sea level rise could inflict on coastal units of the National Park System. We also take a look ahead to summer in the National Park System, the watery side of the system specifically, with a look at some of the prime sea kayaking destinations awaiting paddlers in the National Park System.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” - Neale Donald Walsch. This quote is significant to today’s podcast because my son, Hayden, just spent a month Sea Kayaking and backpacking through the Alaskan Wilderness on a NOLS Program. He chose this program knowing that it was outside of his comfort zone. This is one of my favorite podcasts ever with an exceptional young man that I am lucky enough to have as a son. A sea kayaking expedition through the Capricornia Quays islands in Queensland, with Rob Mercer, Mark Sundin & Chris James. Completed in July/August 2011, this trip traversed more than 400km of island chain, with crossings from 30-95km, culminating in the landing on the remote North Reef, a lighthouse island not previously reached by kayakers. It was the first major trip undertaken in the Southern Hemisphere in modern fast touring sea kayaks, and showed what was possible with a fit, motivated and skilled set of paddlers in a fast sea kayak.
A week before they depart for America to take on the dual challenge of the 400km Texas Water Safari and 700km Yukon Quest, Mark chats to Kate & Steve Dawson about their own paddling stories and the challenge ahead.

Or you can get the job that, not that you hate, but the job do you enjoy that allows you to do the things you're passionate about. Like the out doors. Rosco was on some days off with friends back in 1988 paddling down the Hollyford River into Lake McKerrow and out to Martins Bay with the plan of paddling along the coast on the Tasman Sea and into Milford Sound. After waiting for 2 days at Martins Bay for the 4 meter swell to ease it was an easy paddle down the coast and into Milford. The final 16km paddling all the way into the sound saw Rosco and his friends escorted by a pod of 30 bottlenose dolphins. It was a very “memorable” trip and one that planted the seed for setting up Milford’s first commercial sea kayaking operation.Today over two decades later Rosco has the longest serving owner operated sea kayaking business in New Zealand. With this wealth of experience and a small team of top class guides working alongside him Rosco continues to offer visitors to Milford Sound new and exciting sea kayaking adventures. This Adventure log is from a recent trip I took with my brother to the Baja California in Mexico. I've dreamed about sea kayaking this area for over a decade. I fired up my microphone throughout the trip while adventure was actually happening. Some of the audio quality is great as I forgot my windscreen for my microphone. I hope you can listen past the blowing wind or mic bumps. Consider it a real-life rough cut authentically inviting you into the adventure with us. Here is the Sea Kayaking Baja guide service Paddling South. I'd highly recommend joining them for an adventure.
