Early singles included George Strait's “You Look So Good in Love” and Jack Wagner's major hit “All I Need,” which Glen also produced. In the mid-1980s he went to work for Quincy Jones, an era when he and Siedah Garrett co-wrote Michael Jackson's triple platinum single “Man in the Mirror.” By the dawn of the 1990s, Glen had begun collaborating with Wilson Phillips, co-writing their chart topping hits “Hold On” and “You're in Love.” He went on to produce and co-write all the songs on Alanis Morissette's debut album, Jagged Little Pill, including “You Oughta Know,” “Hand in My Pocket,” “All I Really Want,” “Ironic,” “You Learn,” and “Head Over Feet.” The project earned the Album of the Year Grammy, and Glen returned to produce and co-write Alannis's sophomore release, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, including the hit “Thank U.” Other songs from the Glen Ballard songbook include Aerosmith's “Pink” and “Falling in Love is Hard on the Knees,” as well as the Dave Matthews Band's “I Did It” and “The Space Between.” Glen earned a Golden Globe and Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song for “Believe,” which he co-wrote with Alan Silvestri for the film The Polar Express. He has written and produced songs for Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Ringo Starr, Van Halen, Chaka Khan, Christina Aguilera, Katy Perry, and many others. In recent years, Glen has found major success in musical theater, including writing original lyrics and music for GHOST the musical, and teaming again with Alan Silvestri to write the score for the musical adaptation of Back to the Future. Glen has won six Grammy awards, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023.

This Day in Legal History: Medicare Bill SignedOn July 30, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Medicare bill into law, marking a significant milestone in American healthcare. With the stroke of his pen, Johnson established Medicare, a federal program providing comprehensive health insurance to Americans aged 65 and older. The bill was signed at the Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, with former President Harry S. Truman by Johnson's side, recognizing Truman's early efforts to promote national health insurance.Medicare went into effect the following year, in 1966, offering hospital and medical insurance to millions of senior citizens. This historic act transformed the landscape of healthcare in the United States, ensuring that older Americans would no longer face financial ruin due to medical expenses. Medicare's introduction also set the stage for future expansions, including the addition of prescription drug coverage and the establishment of Medicare Advantage plans. The signing of the Medicare bill remains a pivotal moment in the pursuit of healthcare equity in the United States.A federal appeals court overturned a $79 million attorneys' fee award in T-Mobile US Inc.'s $350 million settlement of a data breach lawsuit. The US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit ruled that the lower court abused its discretion by approving an excessive fee award in a case that settled quickly and without extensive legal proceedings. The court reversed the fee award, reinstated the objection of class member Cassie Hampe, and remanded the case for further proceedings. The litigation stemmed from a 2021 data breach affecting 76.6 million people, with settlement approval sought in July 2022. Judge Brian C. Wimes initially approved the fee award in June 2023, dismissing objections from Hampe and Connie Pentz as abusive. However, the appeals court found no evidence of bad faith or extortion by Hampe and criticized the lower court for not adjusting the fee award based on the hours worked by class counsel. The court noted that class counsel's fee request amounted to an hourly rate of $7,000 to $9,500, deemed unreasonable. Formed in 1979 and very much influenced by the British Invasion, Charlotte, North Carolina's The Spongetones carried on the musical genre through acclaimed original songwriting, jangle pop riffs, and lilting, Beatlesque vocals. In his 2007 authoritative book Shake Some Action, John M. Borack rated The Spongetones' Beat And Torn (a CD containing 1982's Beat Music LP - one of Brett's all time favorites - and 1984's Torn Apart mini-LP) at #24 of his Top 200 Power Pop Albums of all time. The band features the triple threat of talented singers and songwriters: Jamie Hoover, Pat Walters and Steve Stoeckel. In addition to The Spongetones, Jamie has shared the stage and recorded with Don Dixon and Marti Jones, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Hootie & The Blowfish, Bill Lloyd, Emitt Rhodes, and Ray Paul, among others. Hoover either produced or co-produced all the Spongetones' albums, and continues to produce a wide variety of other musicians, recently including '60s singer/songwriter Bob Lind ('Elusive Butterfly') and young prodigy Elena Rogers.
