Mike and Pat talk about AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era...a book examining the fateful events of the consequential last months of 1980, how they changed music and politics, and inadvertently set the tone for today's toxic climate in America...a story about rock & roll, murder and the ongoing culture war. Mike Derrico and Pat Ivanitski are your hosts.   AUTUMN AND EVERYTHING AFTER: The Murder of John Lennon, Evolution of Bruce Springsteen & the Birth of the Reagan Era is available in eBook and paperback editions.  https://www.amazon.com/Autumn-Everyth... https://www.indiebound.org/book/9781735476704   As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. Childhood friend Joe Gerulski joins the show for Episode 61 to share some great music-related stories and talk about growing up in the family-run business selling records in an age when records were still the biggest-selling musical format and rock music was still at peak popularity. Aside from Creem, he has contributed to notable publications such as Rolling Stone, Circus, Life and is the author of books such as The Noise: Notes from a Rock and Roll Era, Only the Good Die Young: The Rock and Roll Book of the Dead, the very first book ever written on Kiss, and has now, after decades written his first novel, Loudmouth. https://www.amazon.com/Loudmouth-Nove... https://www.duncanwrites.com/   As a rock and roll podcast, Rock Under Fire makes it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that the show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history leaves an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone.   In past episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, J Geils Band, Billy Miller, Chris Cornell, Turn Me On Dead Man, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, disco vs. rock, Ticketmaster, Tom Petty, and most overrated and underrated artists. We had a great time chatting with Lydia about meeting Peter when he was Peter Criscuola, how their young love blossomed and being a part of the phenomenon that would become KISS. Lydia was there at the very beginning, supporting Peter while he pursued his dreams of rock and roll stardom.  Lydia tells us about how Peter created the cat man character which was inspired by their pet cat which they shared together. Lydia’s memoir is also like a wonderful scrapbook, documenting home photos of their life, relationship as well as the band’s evolving look. What was it like hanging around with Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley? It's all here! We also discuss the part she played in the creation of the song “Beth”, what it was like to witness KISS become one of the biggest bands in the world, travel the world, rub shoulders with celebrities, lose herself in that relationship, and find herself once again. This is a story of young love, whirlwind romance, excess, rock and roll and a woman finding her own place in the world.

Drummer Richie Fontana has led an eventful life. He started out in the mid-70s with the killer rock band Piper. Today, they are probably best known as the launchpad for frontman Billy Squier. Piper was managed by Bill Aucoin, which led to Richie also working and touring with Kiss and playing on Paul Stanley's 1978 solo album. Piper's second album, Can't Wait, was produced by KISS mastermind/Aucoin Vice President Sean Delaney, which provided the bridge to Richie's second band the Skatt Bros. The Delaney fronted disco-rock band managed two albums before calling it quits, but Richie landed on his feet again when he was hired by the late Laura Branigan to be her touring drummer through the mid-80s. Unfortunately, MS has slowed him down a little, but not much. He's still very active musically and released a solo album a few years ago called Steady on the Steel. Today he's enjoying life with his long time girlfriend, Lydia Criss. We get the details on what life was like in the orbit of luminaries like Billy, Aucoin, Kiss and Laura. Enjoy!   http://www.richiefontana.com

We're back this week to share our favorite songs by Sunset Strip legends WASP! In 1982 Blackie Lawless builds WASP was built to shock. Their over-the-top image garnered a ton of attention in an already-growing LA music scene. From Lawless' buzzsaw codpiece to models being tied to a torture rack to throwing raw meat into the audience, WASP takes the blueprint set by Alice Cooper and KISS and elevates it to raunchy new heights. Amid all of the theatricality, though, lay some of the best hard rock music of the decade and beyond. WASP   While Blackie Lawless remains the constant in WASP's career, the band has featured a number of fantastic musicians and incarnations over the years. The early days of the band included bassists Rik Fox and Don Costa and, later, Johnny Rod. Notably, some amazing guitarists have graced albums by WASP including Chris "Mean Man" Holmes, Randy Piper, Darrell Roberts, and Bob Kulick. Additionally, a who's who of rock drumming history have passed through the WASP ranks including Tony Richards, Frankie Banali, Stet Howland, Steve Riley, Mike Dupke, and Randy Black. The band currently surrounding Lawless features Doug Blair, Mike Duda, and Aquiles Priester. As mentioned in the show, we're showcasing our personal Top 5 WASP Songs. You're getting great tracks from virtually all eras of their more than thirty year career. In conclusion, it's a deep dive into one of the landmark metal bands of the 1980s and beyond. We're still rock stars, but just doing different things now. Michael is a New Jersey native, lifelong guitarist, and music nerd. In the 90s, he and his band Segway recorded heavily and gigged tirelessly up and down the East Coast to anyone who would listen. These days, he spends the majority of his time teaching his six-year old twin boys (Sam and George) the importance of The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and the need for very loud guitars. He is also a Partner and Co-founder of the Hi-Tech Recruiting Firm C2R Ventures, HQ'd in New York City. https://c2rventures.com/   In this episode we discuss the rock clubs of the 90s NJ music scene such as the Melody, Club Bene, Birch Hill, Studio One, etc...plus, the rebirth of vinyl, farewell tours, Slayer, Van Halen, Bruno Mars,Iron Maiden, Chuck Berry, John Mellencamp, Elder, Ghost, Art Stock, and a whole lotta random stuff. Following the unexpected Dolores O'Riordan episode, Mike, Pat, and Stick re-assemble for the first full-cast show of 2018. After a long run of guests, the trio returns, and the conversation is all over the place...the future of death in rock and roll, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Judas Priest, Rod Stewart's 1978 album Blondes Have More Fun, a discussion of Stewart's 1970s recorded output, and a hilarious analysis of how duos like Seals and Crofts, Simon and Garfunkel, and Hall and Oats get their names. Mike Derrico, Pat Ivanitski, and Stick Nixon are your hosts.   We thank all of you who continue to support Rock Under Fire, and we welcome any new listeners to the show. As a rock and roll podcast, we make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. As a rock and roll podcast, we make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. Legendary rock and roll photographer and author, Bob Gruen joins us for our one-year anniversary episode. We discuss Bob's career producing iconic images that have very often provided the narrative for rock and roll for the past 50 years. Bob is synonymous with John Lennon, Yoko Ono, The Rolling Stones, Ike and Tina Turner, Kiss, The New York Dolls, Led Zeppelin, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Clash, and a mind-numbing host of other rock and roll legends. It is also difficult to think of Bob Gruen without thinking of his home, stomping ground, and workplace, New York City. He is, without a doubt, New York's premier photographer, and one of the most important that rock and roll music has ever seen. In this little tribute episode to the power of the image in rock music, we're honored to be joined by Bob. Mike also gives his review of the Fyre Festival. In Episode 20, we discuss the R&RHOF 2017 induction ceremony along the artists. Then comes the obvious and expected...we vent our issues with the Hall. It's an old and tired box of complaints, but it nonetheless comes up once a year. Here is our take on the subject. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. We make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history gives us an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone. In the previous 19 episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, Yes, Joan Baez, Nile Rodgers, Journey, Steve Perry, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, and our most overrated and underrated artists. As our search for all that has gone wrong with rock music continues, Episode 19 puts rock's most powerful symbol, the guitar itself, under fire. How did the guitar go from the coolest object on Earth to an instrument for wimps? We also discuss the death of rock's founding father Chuck Berry, the possible retirement of Eric Clapton, and a host of guitar-related names such as Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Tony Macalpine, Al Di Meola, and Vinnie Moore. Pat also reviews Panic! At the Disco's recent Madison Square Garden gig. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. We examine these questions in a 90-minute discussion that also explores the likes of ASCAP, BMI, Apple, U2, Metallica, Aerosmith, Huey Lewis, Ray Parker Jr., Starship, George Harrison, The Chiffons, Ed Sheeran, George Michael, and the two similar but unique cases of Led Zeppelin vs. Spirit and Jake Holmes. Last week's conversation with original KISS road crew member, Peter "Moose" Oreckinto, was the fastest downloaded episode in Decibel Geek history. On top of that, it's elicited some of the best feedback we've ever had. This week we're proud to bring you another long-form discussion with Moose! In this week's episode, Moose returns to share more road stories from the early days of KISS as well as some memories of his return to the band in a management capacity on the Destroyer tour. First, some business to attend to: The interview clip that you hear at the beginning of the show of Peter Criss speaking of Moose  is courtesy of Annika Sonic from The Sonic Boom LIVE show on 95.3 DNH in Honesdale, PA. Check out the show HERE As some of you may know, the original intention of this week's episode was to have an in-person discussion between Moose and Aaron Camaro. The conversation did take place, at The Rainbow Bar & Grill no less, but technical gremlins got hold of the file and the audio was lost. Luckily, Moose was nice enough to do part 2 through Skype.  Moose showing Aaron whereKISS roadies were harassedin front of The Rainbow While at the legendary Rainbow, Aaron and Moose received some first class service and food from their waitress Julie and the staff there. So, this week's Geek(s) of the Week are the staff at The Rainbow Bar and Grill. Check out the Rainbow online HERE. We dive into the conversation discussing KISS' rehearsals and showcase at the famous Fillmore East in late December 1973 into early 1974. With Paul wearing the short-lived bandit makeup and the band using a short-lived spiderweb backdrop, it's an interesting moment in KISStory. We get Moose's memories of this time including a heated exchange between him and a Casablanca Records executive. In this discussion, you'll also get Moose's recollections of KISS' first trip out west to provide the entertainment for the Casablanca Records launch party at the Century Plaza Hotel as well as their television debut a few days later at the Aquarius Theater for Dick Clark's In Concert program. Speaking of television, we also get Moose's memories of the band's wild appearance on the Mike Douglas Show and how the low ceilings in the studio presented some problems for the band's pyrotechnics. Mike Douglas & Gene Simmons KISS' first appearance on June 1st, 1974 was a big moment on the band's climb up the ladder but money problems were plaguing the band and, especially, the crew. Moose shares his memories of the crew being stranded in San Francisco with no money for food or gas to get to the next show 1800 miles away in Minot, North Dakota. We also hear Moose's memories of returning to KISS after his injury to be the assistant road manager on the Destroyer tour and how it differed from his previous job working with the special effects. Some interesting takes on Ace and Peter from the road. 1976-77 Destroyer Tour Stage Set Other subjects touched on in this in-depth discussion include KISS' strange appearance at Eielson Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska in front of a very shocked group of soldiers and their families, Moose's memories of Joyce Biawitz/Bogart, his time after KISS working with artists such as Angel and Alice Cooper, and how he met his wife (there IS a KISS connection). The book that has been referenced in this episode, and last week's, is the upcoming 'Nothin' to Lose: The Making of KISS (1972-1975)' in which Moose is quoted as well as 200 others that worked with/for the band during those formative years. This book was put together by the band and author Ken Sharp and is expected to be one of, if not the, best KISS-related book to be released. Pre-Order Nothin' to Lose HERE. Aaron Camaro & Mooseposing with the upcomingNothin' to Lose book. The Decibel Geek podcast thanks Peter "Moose" Oreckinto for his time and amazing stories on the early days of KISS. This will, no doubt, lead to more appearances in the future as we've really become close with Moose and look forward to more in the future. We wish him all the best in his personal ventures as well as for the success of the upcoming book. It's been quite a memorable week here at Decibel Geek headquarters.  We had record numbers of downloads with the recent Bruce Kulick episode and have received a lot of great feedback on the show. Bruce is currently doing a Crazy Nights retrospective on his official site and it would behoove you to give it a look. Good insight into a very divisive album among the KISS Army. In other KISS-related news, our very own Wally Norton had his recent review of The Tour's stop in Toronto get a mention on KISS Online. There's also another great Toronto review posted by The Meister that you should check out as well. We'll put our horns down and get on with the business of this week's episode. As we announced last week, Aaron and Chris will be appearing in-person at the upcoming Nashville Comic & Horror Festival at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds on Saturday, October 6th. They will be recording all day long at their table and YOU can even be on the show. All details including guest list and prices are available at www.comiccitytn.com. This week's Geek of the Week is Jani Vare who had some great feedback on the Bruce Kulick episode. To be eligible to be a future Geek of the Week simply join our facebook fan page and add to the conversation. The only thing more enjoyable to a true Decibel Geek than listening to music is reading the stories behind the music. There have been some amazing books written about the genre of Rock as well as plenty of great bio/autobiographies that give a deep insight into the people that churn out that ear-splitting music that we love to hear. With that in mind, we present this week's topic; Library of Loud: Favorite Rock Books. Joining us for this discussion is someone that certainly knows a thing or two about Rock books; author Michael Toney. Mike recently released his own book; Tales from the Stage. This book is loaded with great interviews of numerous bands/artists that are right in the Decibel Geek wheelhouse including Ron Keel, Tracii Guns, Eddie Trunk, and the aforementioned Bruce Kulick. This is not standard fare as far as rock interviews go as Mike delves deeper with his questioning to probe out specific details about the lives of his interview subjects that are eye-opening, funny, and as is the case with WASP's Chris Holmes, utterly shocking. You'll look at your favorite rock stars with a whole different perspective after reading this book. We decided to do a round-robin style conversation about our favorite Rock books with each of us discussing three choices each as well as the most popular suggested pick by our listeners at the facebook fan page. In round one, Mike picks a relatively recent autobiography by a certain Spaceman from a different planet. Aaron picks an exhaustive document on England's biggest rock export of the 70's and Chris chooses an autobiography that is a serious look at the inner-workings of one of the biggest bands in history told from a members' persepctive. Round two sees Mike picking a memoir of a metal legend that's recent statements in the press have been equally as impactful as the thrash music that he's churned out for 30 years. Aaron's second choice is an in-depth look at the Hottest Band in the Land from the business side of things that includes so much detail it could easily be required reading in a college classroom. Chris rounds out round two with an inspiring book that chronicles that life of a concert promotion giant that ended in tragedy. Before we get into round three, Mike shares a contradictory take on the Mark St. John transition to Bruce Kulick in KISS during the 1984 Animalize tour. Aaron and Chris were truly surprised by this revelation. Is it the real story? What do you think? Our final round of picks includes Mike's pick of an autobiography that is as entertaining as it is informative and is, quite frankly, a miracle in its existence due to the tumultuous lifestyle of the book's namesake. Chris' final pick is, in his opinion, the ultimate document on KISS (can you tell we like them?) with its engrossing detail and depth. Aaron finishes things off with his final pick that happens to coincide with our listener's overwhelming favorite and it's a choice that is anything but clean. With a topic like this there are so many other choices that could have easily been our lists but are also worthy of your time and attention. These include books that have been promoted on our show before like Lydia Criss' Sealed with a KISS and Dick Wagner's Not Only Women Bleed. Before we let Mike go, we had to grill him for his thoughts on the enormous (in size AND price) KISS Monster book that was recently released and he certainly didn't shy away from his opinion on it.  As you'll hear at the end of the show Mike is graciously offering a great deal on Tales from the Stage for the Decibel Geek listeners. If you go to www.TalesfromtheStage.com before October 31st and type in the offer code RADIO, you'll get 10% off the price of the book! This book will make a great addition to any rock fans book shelf. Get it before it's too late.  We'd like to thank Michael Toney for being this week's guest and appreciate him coming on to Geek out with us about books. Read on!

Welcome to KISSMAS in JULY here at Decibel Geek headquarters! We're always looking for new excuses to do KISS-themed material and doing a full month of KISS stuff in July just seemed like a logical choice.  We kick off the month-o-KISS with an in-depth conversation we recently had with Lydia Criss. Formerly the wife of original KISS catman Peter Criss, Lydia entered the KISS Army's consciousness in 1976 when she accepted the award for 'Beth' being the #1 single of 1976 at the People's Choice Awards. What was the reason for Lydia accepting the award? Listen to our discussion to find out. A few years ago, Lydia published a coffee table memoir of her life entitled Sealed with a KISS. Jam packed with tons of photos never before seen of KISS and Peter Criss from their earliest days as a struggling band rehearsing in a frigid loft in downtown Manhattan, their apex of popularity in being named the most popular band in America according to a Gallup poll, and beyond. The book also gives a rare glimpse into Lydia's personal life as the wife to a rising star in the music world. In this conversation, Lydia, Chris, and Aaron pick some of their favorite Peter Criss-sung songs and Lydia shares her memories of the stories behind the making of the songs including the drama that would arise between band members.  Peter Criss' 1978 KISS solo album included quite a few songs about the end of a relationship. This mirrored reality as it was around this time that Peter's marriage to Lydia was ending. Lydia recalls the experience of hearing these songs and the effect they had on her at a tumultuous time in her life. Also in this discussion are Lydia's memories of accepting KISS' People's Choice Award and the conversation with Gene Simmons that led to her accepting the award on the band's behalf. The story of how Beth came to be has been told from numerous different angles and Lydia tells her side of the story and it's probably something you haven't heard before.  While this conversation includes some great inside information from a person that was right in the middle of the rise of the Hottest Band in the Land, you will get WAY more great stuff like this if you purchase a copy of the 2nd printing of Sealed With a KISS. Included in this new printing are over 20 new photos as well more content including a listing of tons of gigs that Peter performed before joining KISS.  If you are a KISS fan and don't own this book, you are truly missing out. It's totally worth the money and you don't have to mortgage your house to afford it. Check it out!
