We are doing a reairing this week of episode 80 of Diverse Thinking Different Learning in which we talked with Dr. Barry Prizant. This episode is being revisited at a perfect time because this is Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. In this episode, Dr. Prizant helps us understand why it's important to stop labeling certain behaviors in children as intentional defiance or difficulty. Dr. Barry Prizant is a speech-language pathologist with nearly five decades of experience working with individuals with autism and their families. He serves as a Visiting Scholar at Brown University and directs Childhood Communication Services, and he is widely published, including The SCERTS Model as well as multiple books and over 130 scholarly works. Dr. Prizant has delivered more than 900 presentations worldwide, including twice at the United Nations, and he has received many awards for his contributions to the field. The truth (as Dr. Prizant discusses) is that challenging behaviors are not always just the child being deliberately defiant for the sake of it. It is sometimes the child's way of dealing with anxiety and/or emotional overwhelm, and Dr. Prizant discusses this alongside insights from his book Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism. Encouraging us to reconsider how we interpret challenging behaviors, he suggests that we not try to eliminate these actions but rather try to better understand the reason(s) behind them. Dr. Prizant stresses the fact that real progress comes not from suppressing behaviors but from nurturing a child's strengths, enhancing their abilities, and providing a supportive environment. After all, in doing so, children can begin to display more positive behaviors and enjoy a greater sense of well-being. Throughout the conversation, we also explore why it's important to take a closer look at children's interests and passions which are far too often misunderstood or undervalued and how we can use those passions as gateways to growth and learning, so whether you are a parent, teacher, or caregiver, this episode offers valuable insights into how to connect with and support children in more empowering ways.   Show Notes: [0:05] - Karen announces a new podcast schedule and reintroduces Dr. Prizant's episode on kids' passions. [4:35] - Dr. Prizant highlights his book's update and its alignment with evolving autism advocacy. [6:09] - Decades of developmental training helped shape Dr. Prizant's strength-based, human-centered view of autism. [8:14] - Understanding autistic behavior requires empathy and rejecting interpretations such as “noncompliance.” [10:05] - Dr. Prizant urges professionals to self-reflect and further explore the reasons behind challenging behaviors. [12:31] - Dr. Prizant argues that children cannot learn or connect effectively when overwhelmed emotionally. [15:50] - Echolalia and personal interests can be strengths that lead to communication, connection, and self-esteem. [19:06] - Passion-based learning can evolve into broader knowledge when adults nurture and expand children's interests. [22:47] - Dr. Prizant points out how dismissing a child's passion shuts down connection. [24:13] - Children's deep interests can enrich families and communities, even guiding future career aspirations and expertise. [26:21] - Nurturing a child's interests can lead to connection, skill development, and social engagement. [29:37] - Some fascinations in childhood fade, but others evolve into lifelong passions or hobbies. [31:47] - Highlighting a child's strengths can reshape peer perception and lead to more inclusion. [34:42] - Karen praises Uniquely Human for transforming fear and uncertainty into understanding and hope. [35:19] - Dr. Prizant now narrates his audiobook and co-hosts a podcast with an audio engineer who has autism.   Links and Related Resources: Episode 25: Raising Differently Wired Kids with Joy and Confidence with Debbie Reber Episode 43: Building Social Competence and Enhancing Social Skills with Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson Episode 80: Turning Kids' Passions and Enthusiasms into Superpowers with Barry Prizant, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Uniquely Human: Updated and Expanded: A Different Way of Seeing Autism by Barry Prizant, Ph.D.   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses: Support for Parents Who Have Children with ADHD, Anxiety, or Dyslexia    Connect with Dr. Barry Prizant: Dr. Prizant's Website Dr. Prizant's LinkedIn Page Dr. Prizant's Facebook Page Uniquely Human Podcast

In this episode of the Tilt Parenting Podcast, I have a powerful and thoughtful conversation with Dr. Barry Prizant, one of the world's leading authorities on autism. Barry is recognized as an innovator of respectful, person- and family-centered approaches for individuals with autism and neurodevelopmental disabilities. He has more than forty years of experience as a scholar, researcher, and international consultant, and he's an adjunct professor at Brown University, a certified speech-language pathologist and director of Childhood Communication Services, a private practice. Barry is also the author of the must-read book Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism, which suggests a major shift in our understanding of autism. Instead of classifying “autistic” behaviors as signs of pathology, he sees them as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. As you listen to our conversation, you'll know exactly why I was so excited to bring Barry onto the show. He is at the forefront of the revolution in helping to change the way neurodiversity is perceived in the world and frankly I'm just so grateful there are people like him in the world doing this critical work. I hope you enjoy the episode.   THINGS YOU'LL LEARN FROM THIS EPISODE: Barry's personal story for how he came to be doing this work How things can change for autistic kids when we reframe and view their “behavior” through a new lens The relationship between trust and emotional regulation Barry's perspective on the use of language such as “high-functioning” and “low-functioning” autism Why words like “oppositional” and “noncompliant” in relation to an autistic person's behavior are usually completely off-mark The very real cost of pathologizing autism Barry's powerful ideas for how he is trying to shift thinking around the way autism is perceived What should our goals be with regards to the long-term vision for our autistic children? Neurodivergent students often get pulled out of classrooms and taught separately because they are “different.” Well, we're all a little bit different. Does that mean we should all be taught in silos? Not a chance.   There's an inclusive program in the Seattle area that's supporting our colorful, mismatched students in a unique way that can help them on and off the stage. Youth are learning through theater and improvisation.   This week on the podcast, I'm talking with Lauren Marshall, director of Theater of Possibility, about the organization's unique take on theater and learning. And joining Lauren is Jackie Moffit, one of the school's former students and current teachers.    Together we explore the role the current education system has had on neurodivergent youth, why pull-out programs might work in some instances (but generally don't), the problem with special education, and why acting is a valuable tool for students with autism. About Lauren Marshall: Lauren Marshall is the founding director of Theater of Possibility, serving neurodiverse youth, since 2010. A produced and published playwright, she has an MFA in Music Theater writing from NYU, and BA and JD from Stanford.     About Jackie Moffit: Jackie Moffit is an actor, writer, and musician on the autism spectrum who goes by any pronouns. They first started participating in Theater of Possibility in 2012 as a student and became an assistant teacher for the kids' class several years later. They are passionate about neurodiversity representation in education and the arts, and are excited for thier first session as lead teacher. In addition to his work with Theater of Possibility, Jackie also volunteers at Books to Prisoners and writes media reviews for the Northwest Film Forum and Redefine Magazine. What would happen if we switch from seeing problematic behaviors as a child being defiant and willfully uncooperative to seeing those behaviors as strategies to cope with anxiety and emotional dysregulation? Dr. Barry Prizant is here to show us what happens when we make that shift. In his recently updated and expanded book Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism, Dr. Prizant presents seemingly problematic behaviors as part of a range of strategies to cope with a world that feels chaotic and overwhelming. Rather than curb these behaviors, it's better to enhance abilities, build on strengths, and offer support that will lead to more desirable behavior and a better quality of life.  In this episode, Dr. Prizant explains how different behaviors appear to us as parents and educators, but what would happen if we take the time to find out why the behaviors are occurring. He also helps us take deep interests and reframe how we see them to expand learning and ultimately boost confidence and motivation.   Show Notes: [2:06] - Welcome to the show, Dr. Prizant! Karen highly recommends Dr. Prizant's book Uniquely Human. [3:26] - Books like Uniquely Human, humanize the experiences of those on the Autism spectrum. [4:50] - Dr. Prizant describes his background and in depth training. He looks through a developmental lens. [6:21] - For decades, parents have been wanting to understand the reason for a behavior but it is hard to understand if we don't ask them about their experience. [8:05] - We have to see a child's behavior as their way of coping with emotional dysregulation. [9:49] - When you justify a behavior or jump to conclusions, it gives you permission to not ask why. [10:38] - You have to find the underlying issue and find a solution rather than just trying to stop the behavior. [11:58] - Dr. Prizant's book is focused primarily on children with Autism, but these issues are seen in many others, too. [13:45] - Most often, we focus on things a child cannot do, but honoring a child's strengths is so crucial. [15:10] - Peaks could be characterized by intense interests. [16:48] - The most important thing is building trust. [17:57] - To demonstrate, Dr. Prizant shares a story about a child intensely interested in flags and about a child who was fascinated by calendars. [20:33] - What is the difference between an obsession and an enthusiasm? It's how we see the behavior. [22:06] - When we respect a child's interest, we build trust and expand their learning and engagement with others. [24:34] - We should show appreciation for a child's interest. Show your appreciation by engaging with them in their interest. [26:19] - Sometimes we can set special times for enthusiasms or integrate them into the day to day routines. [28:27] - The limitations are in our creativity in how we can see the possibilities of their interests. [30:36] - Dr. Prizant shares the story of a student who is hyperlexic. [32:46] - It is important to give every child the opportunity to shine with their unique strengths.   About Our Guest: Dr. Barry Prizant is a speech-language pathologist with close to 50 years experience as a researcher and international consultant for autistic individuals and their families. In this episode I talk with Jacquelyn Stephanou about her 20 year old son Will who has a dual diagnosis of Down syndrome and Autism.  Will's diagnosis brought challenges, especially regarding communication.   By constantly reading, researching and connecting with others, Jacquelyn learned about Spelling to Communicate, a technique that teaches individuals with Autism & Apraxia the purposeful motor skills needed to communicate by spelling.   Students are taught to point accurately to letters on a letter board to spell out words and eventually create sentences.   For the first time in many years Will is now able to express his thoughts and feelings and even share his dreams for the future!  Jacquelyn believes in presuming competence and continually pushing boundaries to raise the bar.  The potential is there.  You just have to figure out how to tap into it to give your child every opportunity for success.Books:Prizant, Barry: Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism. For years people assumed that autistic people did not feel emotions in themselves or recognize them in others. By consulting with autistic adults, we now know this may be the exact opposite of the truth. They actually feel emotions more intensely than many of us. It is the ability to organize and make sense of those emotions in themselves and others that is confusing and overwhelming, causing them to either shut down or have what seem like overreactions. Autism is usually portrayed as a checklist of deficits, including difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. This perspective leads to therapies focused on ridding individuals of “autistic” symptoms.  Dr. Barry M. Prizant, an internationally renowned autism expert, offers a new and compelling paradigm: the most successful approaches to autism don’t aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual’s experience and what underlies the behavior. Join Dr. Barry Prizant and me on Tuesday, October 13, 10-11 A.M. CT US, as we discuss his groundbreaking book on autism, Uniquely Human. Dr. Prizant offers inspiring stories, and practical advice drawn from his four-decade career working in universities, schools, hospitals, and in private practice.
