In this episode, Dr. Walter D. Greason Dean Emeritus of the Honors School at Monmouth University, Associate Professor, and Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership interviews Grammy Award-winning composer Arturo O’Farrill about the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. The Afro Latin Jazz orchestra is a group led by O’Farrill that includes more than a dozen of the most notable Jazz musicians performing today. This group brings together the sounds of big band jazz and Latin music culture. O’Farrill is a jazz musician, composer, band leader and pianist noted for his influence on contemporary Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban jazz. He has several Grammy Award nominations and Grammy Awards including the Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album in 2015. Andrew Andron composed and performed the music for this podcast.
Arturo O’Farrill, as a bandleader and as a citizen of the world, is an informed and thoughtful man; it shines through in everything he does. When host Mitch Goldman asked him for a topic for Deep Focus, his response consisted of two equally surprising options: either Steely Dan or Olivier Messiaen. Well, Messiaen is going to have to wait; Steely Dan won the day. What's that you say? You're not a Steely Dan fan?! Probably because you haven't heard a proper Jazz man's take on them at the top of their game. #WKCR #DeepFocus #MitchGoldman #ArturoO'Farrill #SteelyDan #JazzRadio #JazzInterview Photo credit: no copyright information available.

EPISODE 1 A Fresh and Uniquely Human Perspective on Autism Play the Episode… …and Continue the Discussion Do you have a book or podcast club? If so, you may use this discussion guide to facilitate a conversation about this episode. 1. Barry coined the term “Uniquely Human” to de-pathologize and reframe the way we understand autistic individuals and the autistic experience. In your opinion, does “Uniquely Human” help to achieve these goals of seeing autism in a different way? If so, why, and if not, why not? 2. Barry and Dave see the Uniquely Human Podcast as a neurotypical/autistic co-equal partnership, as they each bring unique experiences and skills to the podcast. How is this approach emblematic of what we are learning from the neurodiversity movement? What are the potential benefits of such a partnership for listeners? 3. Barry and Dave discuss the concept that autism is best understood as a “shared human experience”. How does this perspective contrast with more traditional views of autism, and how can this change your attitude and actions? Featuring Show Notes Join Barry and Dave for the debut of Uniquely Human: The Podcast, as they deeply explore the broader meaning of the phrase, “uniquely human.” In this hour-long special episode, you’ll hear Barry describe how a lifetime of work has informed the necessary evolution of humankind’s relationship with autism and neurodiversity. Enjoy this special conversation as we set the stage for regular episodic content focusing on the most important topics in autism. FANDANGO AT THE WALL follows Arturo O’Farrill, maestro Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra founder, and Kabir Sehgal, bestselling author and music producer, as they prepare to record a live album at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Their project is inspired by the annual music festival called Fandango Fronterizo, which unites people in son jarocho's song and dance on both sides of the Tijuana-San Diego border. Before recording, Fandango Fronterizo organizer, Jorge Francisco Castillo, takes O’Farrill and Sehgal on an inspiring journey of Veracruz, Mexico, where son jarocho, the 300-hundred-year-old folk music called combining indigenous, Spanish, and African traditions originated. As they travel to the remotest regions of the Veracruz coast, they meet legendary son jarocho musicians and artisans and recruit them for the upcoming festival. Their travels culminate at the annual border celebration, promoting peace, and celebrating unity. From executive producers, Quincy Jones, Andrew Young, Carlos Santana, producers Kabir Sehgal and Doug Davis, and director Varda Bar-Kar, the film introduces the beautiful music of the region through intimate storytelling and captivating concert footage. FANDANGO AT THE WALL is a powerful reminder of music’s ability to bridge cultural barriers.

In Your Face—New York got its start as a prototype production at the Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater in New York. Lily Tomlin joined Soledad O’Brien and Misha Dichter for the launch of this star-studded show. Musical Director Jay Leonhart put together a tight, brilliant brand and introduced the catchy In Your Face-New York theme. Dr. Josh Bazell left the audience agitated and distressed with his description of how New Yorkers co-exist with rats and Arturo O’Farrill brought terrific salsa sounds to a cheering audience. Watch or listen to highlights of this groundbreaking show.
Grammy Award Winning Pianist/Composer/Educator - Arturo O'FarrillFounder and Artistic Director of the nonprofit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, and Grammy award winner, Arturo O'Farrill, can appropriately be dubbed "the apple that did not fall far from the tree." He is the son of the late great Cuban composer and arranger, Chico O'Farrill. Arturo has worked with a wide range of jazz greats including: Dizzy Gillespie, Steve Turre, Freddy Cole, The Fort Apache Band, Lester Bowie, and Wynton Marsalis to name a few,With 10 CD's already under his belt, including his recent Grammy winner, "Offense of the Drum", Arturo has produced yet another incredible work that just may garner him another Grammy nomination. "Cuba: The Conversation Continues", Arturo's newest release, is a heart pounding, chaotic, rhythmic blend of pure Afro-Cuban jazz bliss, that goes well beyond just being about music. It is also about "repairing the rupture between the US and Cuba." He pushes it to the limit on this one ya'll!

March 26, 2015 By Sophie Maricq and Rob Hochschild The New York-based Gregorio Uribe Big Band is a 16-piece orchestra that blends cumbia and other Colombian rhythms with the powerful sound and arrangements of a high-intensity large ensemble. Led by Colombia-born vocalist and accordionist Gregorio Uribe, the band held a monthly residency for four years at Zinc Bar in Greenwich Village, and has performed at the Kennedy Center, Iridium Jazz Club, and Celebrate Brooklyn Festival, in addition to other leading venues. After spending his teenage years in his hometown of Bogotá, Colombia, Uribe eventually moved to Boston, enrolled at Berklee, and graduated with a degree in music in 2008. Uribe has been an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth College and a commissioned composer for Grammy-winning Arturo O'Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, and has performed with Carlos Vives and Rubén Blades, among others. He was recently named by the government of Colombia as one of the "100 Most Successful Colombians Abroad." In 2015, the band will release its debut album, a collection of songs that promises to be both danceable and sophisticated, approximating the experience of seeing the band live. The track featured in this episode of Sounds of Berklee, "Caribe Contigo," featured on was MTV’s Tr3s for four weeks in the United States and England. The Gregorio Uribe Big Band performs at Berklee in the NPR live concert program, The Checkout—Live at Berklee, on April 1, 2015.
