Music Theater Works production of “Guys and Dolls” at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie is good old fashioned mid-century style musical theater fun. The story lampoons the idea of middle class morality, lambasting both the good guys and bad guys for taking themselves so seriously. Guys and Dolls has been performed by numerous companies over the past fifty-plus years but still seems to resonate with both young and more mature audiences because the music is memorable and the show is fun.

My initial reaction is to characterize Pippin as The Fantastiks meets Godspell, Explaining the plot is about as easy as trying to recall and interpret the details a dream. What happened is not exactly clear. This production is a feast for the senses that makes use of the entire spectrum of theater craft. Music Theater Works is known for musical excellence and they do not disappoint us in this production. Pippin was co-written and originally directed and choreographed by Chicago native Bob Fosse in 1972 who was at the very epicenter of his highly successful and frenetic career and possibly the pinnacle of his drug addiction that at least partly explains this bizarre tale of young Pippin's quest for meaning in his life. His fingerprints (or dare I say footprints) are all over this psychedelic fever dreamListen to my entire review and editorial comments.

In Episode 242 I talked about how to prepare a musical and shared four areas to get you started: selecting a musical, gathering content ideas, holding auditions and getting started with the first rehearsal. Last week in episode 243 I talked about how to structure and organize your rehearsals so that you can maximize the time you have to teach scenes and songs. Today it's all about the performance: creating a printed or online program, using checklists, pre-show warm-ups, exercises and chats, and celebrating the work that you and your students have done. I hope you've enjoyed this three episode series about putting on musical theatre performances with your students! Join The Ivory Tower Boiler Room Café and get access to our bonus episodes and unedited videos: patreon.com/ivorytowerboilerroom Dr. Stacy Wolf, one of America's leading scholars on musical theater, sits down with Andrew to talk about the magic of musical theater. Right away, she realizes that Andrew is just as obsessed with Broadway, and they discuss their approach to teaching the Broadway Musical. At Princeton, Stacy is a professor of theater and the director of the program in Music Theater, and she explains that one of her favorite questions to ask her students is their experience with going to Broadway. Stacy dissects all of the elements that are involved in putting together a Broadway musical. While opening up about the importance of community theater, Stacy reveals why theater is an art to be cherished in any community. Andrew even gets to talk about how important his summer theater camp, Mainstage was and how it allowed him to embrace his gay identity. And because Andrew couldn't help himself, he asks Stacy so many hard hitting musical theater questions. What does she really think of Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals? Which musical does she always have playing in the background when she's writing? What it's like to teach a Stephen Sondheim course? Let me take a minute to thank YT for not doing anything again this week about the publishing issues we all experience when you’re trying to listen on a regular ol’ computer. You guys do nothing and do it extremely well. So, thanks again. Let’s start the frivolity! Episode 104 is a 31-year-old DBG from September 14th, 1991. I’ve titled it: Voices in the Night We begin with Norm’s Show Open with some extra fun thrown in as we segue directly to the ‘original’ DBG theme. Norm defines not only the game but really what his and now this show is all about. If someone asks you about it, you can use his words to describe it: A silly concept that creates moments of hilarity. Players: Charlene in Braintree Paul from Malden Pat in Melrose Lenny from Charlestown I'm producing and on the phone from Master Control and saying hello to a few hard-working ladies. Jack Harte says hello to some hard-working ladies as well. Truthfully there wasn’t much difference between them. Norm seemed to be familiar with one of the names Jack mentioned. Bdays w/ALL the SFX: Joey Heatherton Mary Frances Crosby Clayton Moore On to 9/16 Alan Funt Ed Begley Jr. – back again because we had him on the previous episode which was from 1993 so if you recall that show, subtract 2. Peter Falk – back again as well for another ‘look.’ B.B. King Lauren Bacall – a ‘noteworthy’ return also from the last episode Other things: Could a tape of Jack laughing become a collector’s item? It was Farm Stand Day. Norm wasn’t sure he was going to attend as he forgot to shave. I told him the ladies love the scruff. Because of that he just may reconsider. He may even be there early. I left Norm reading some headlines for the bottom hour news update to honor the newsman part of his career. And we close it with a couple of commercials: Camelot at the N.S. Music Theater and Waldron Bay Real Estate properties commercial with some smoooooth jazz as the background music. Episode 104, Voices in the Night, begins transmission to your ears, now.

Neurodivergent students often get pulled out of classrooms and taught separately because they are “different.” Well, we're all a little bit different. Does that mean we should all be taught in silos? Not a chance. There's an inclusive program in the Seattle area that's supporting our colorful, mismatched students in a unique way that can help them on and off the stage. Youth are learning through theater and improvisation. This week on the podcast, I'm talking with Lauren Marshall, director of Theater of Possibility, about the organization's unique take on theater and learning. And joining Lauren is Jackie Moffit, one of the school's former students and current teachers. Together we explore the role the current education system has had on neurodivergent youth, why pull-out programs might work in some instances (but generally don't), the problem with special education, and why acting is a valuable tool for students with autism. About Lauren Marshall: Lauren Marshall is the founding director of Theater of Possibility, serving neurodiverse youth, since 2010. A produced and published playwright, she has an MFA in Music Theater writing from NYU, and BA and JD from Stanford. About Jackie Moffit: Jackie Moffit is an actor, writer, and musician on the autism spectrum who goes by any pronouns. They first started participating in Theater of Possibility in 2012 as a student and became an assistant teacher for the kids' class several years later. They are passionate about neurodiversity representation in education and the arts, and are excited for thier first session as lead teacher. In addition to his work with Theater of Possibility, Jackie also volunteers at Books to Prisoners and writes media reviews for the Northwest Film Forum and Redefine Magazine. Some of their interests include synthesizers, linguistics, and tabletop games. What does our daily process tell us about ourselves? How can we learn from each other? I want to hold space for our grief, resilience, and desire to add our voices to the constantly evolving fabric of humanity." https://www.sienaofficial.com/ ~~~ Zahyia, a songwriter, lyricist, producer and creative visionary, has dedicated her life to existing in spaces that elevate and change the limited narratives, images, and awareness of what it means to exist as a Black American Woman. With her eclectic background of Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B, Lo-fi Hip-hop, Music Theater, Funk and Soul, Zahyia finds ways to push traditional boundaries in the world of music and Alternative R&B. For Huang Ruo, music--like theater--exists in a four-dimensional space. As he explains to Frank J. Oteri in this latest episode of NewMusicBox's SoundLives podcast, there is also a larger purpose in most of Huang Ruo's work, whether it is to call attention to stories of people, particularly Asians and Asian-Americans, whose voices have often not been heard, or to provide an environment for reflection and healing.
In this Artist Exploration, Ilda and Charlie discuss her abstract idea of what a Music Theater would be like in the USA, Ilda's process of getting a Visa, the audition process for Steven Spielberg's West Side Story, and the Art of being a Swing. Our Technical Services Manager Carol Lord interviews Curt Dale Clark, Artistic Director of Maine State Music Theater.
Good Morning it's Tuesday June 15th and this is Slices of Wenatchee. We're excited to bring you a closer look at one of our top stories and other announcements every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Today - It might have the shortest parade in recent Apple Blossom history, but no one seemed to care. After more than a year of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, people were thrilled just to be outside with good weather on Saturday. Today's episode is brought to you by Equilus Group Incorporated. Equilus Group, Inc is a Registered Investment Advisory Firm in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Equilus Group, Inc- Building Your Financial Success. Learn more at Equilusfinancial.com. Member SIPC and FINRA. -- Now our feature story… It might have the shortest parade in recent Apple Blossom history with around 92 mostly local entries, but no one seemed to care. After more than a year of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, people were just happy to be outside with good weather enjoying a parade. There was no 2020 Apple Blossom parade so this 2021 Stemilt and Keyes Fibre Community Parade was a welcome sight indeed. Community members lined the route along Orondo Avenue. Because there was no parade in 2020, the 2020 Apple Blossom royalty was included in the parade this year. 2020 Apple Blossom Queen Tess Sparks said that she's excited they've been able to be included in the parade. Sparks just finished her first year at CWU, where she played soccer. The 2021 Apple Blossom Queen Brooke Perez said she loves including the 2020 royalty in this year's parade. She noted that it was great to share the experience with Queen Tess. For many of the parade participants, this is their first parade of the year. Wenatchee Mayor Frank Kuntz said it actually might be one of the first festivals in the Northwest. But he also said it was a close call to make this year's festival happen. Credit to Darci Christoferson and the board of the Apple Blossom Festival. And of course the Health District that gave approval. One of the annual participants is the Leavenworth Float, which this year featured the familiar Gustav onion dome and Alpenhorn players. Scott Bradshaw, the 2019 Royal Bavarian Kanzler, said this is their first parade and they are excited about it. Bradshaw said they're hoping to go to five or six parades this year. Nita Paine and Arlene Jones were also a part of the parade - they represented the 2020 Grand Marshals from the Music Theater of Wenatchee. Riding behind them was the cast of the new show, "MaMa Mia," directed by Paul and Kelly Atwood. The Spokane Lilac Festival was also well represented at the Apple Blossom Festival. It was their first parade of the year. Dan Verheul, the 2021-22 president of the Lilac Festival, said it has been a challenging year. The Lilac Festival is a scholarship program, so they were still able to have a court last year and scholarships, but they were not able to get out into the community to do the things they wanted to do. Still, they are excited about this year. They'll have about six parades this year. Verheul said they're looking forward to each and every one of them. This is the first time this float has been out. It's been in the making for two year since they've been doing nothing but working. Lilac Festival Queen Julia said she is happy to get out too. This is their first parade so it is the trail run for it all but Queen Julia and the court were thrilled to be out. Finally, we spoke to Charlotte Allen who has been in Wenatchee for 41 years and never missed a parade until last year. Or rather, the parade missed her. Allen thought the parade was good, though not as good as some years. To see photos of the event visit us at wenatcheeworld.com - Before we continue, a special thanks to our friends and sponsors at Confluence Health. The group formed just 10 weeks ago when pandemic restrictions were lifted to allow the class to meet in person. Normally they would have 30 weeks of training and performance experience, but they've made the most of their time together, according to WVC music faculty and choir director Juel Iwaasa. The choir formed with five students, who had been working online with Rhia Foster, a vocal jazz artist.. Then, when the switch to in-person was allowed, Iwaasa and Foster swapped classes, giving him the opportunity to direct the singers. Three more singers joined the group and WVC piano faculty Ken Hunnicutt returned as the choir accompanist. But some challenges remained. Singing with masks turned out to be quite difficult. Masks significantly decreased everyone's volume and robbed the choir of a resonant tone and nuance in dynamics. No one could take a full breath with a mask on either. They eventually spaced themselves out around the edges of the recital hall to meet the 15 feet of separation required to sing without masks. Their practice schedules also were hindered by ongoing COVID-19 concerns. They kept at it, though. With just the spring term left in the school year, they were learning a new music selection every week to prepare for what they hoped would be a chance to sing in concert at least once. In a normal year, they would perform three times each term, so in addition to missing out on 20 weeks of practice, they didn't get the chance to experience performing before a crowd. But Cave B was their first performance of the term. The opportunity to perform at the winery's outdoor venue was an unexpected bonus, he said. It turns out one of the members of Chamber Singers is a grandchild to the owners of Cave B Winery ... . And partway through the term, they graciously offered to host our performance at Stage B. So what can we expect from the WVC in the future? Well, the WVC music department is also working on introducing a Mariachi program - anticipated to start in the fall 2022. They have always included some Mariachi or Latinx music staples in their repertoire. - Here's what else you need to know today… Governor Jay Inslee recently announced incentives that are available to Washington state residents who have received the Covid-19 vaccine. He noted that they're making the investment to hopefully save more lives. Before we go, some local history, Wenatchee Valley History, is brought to you by NABUR [this is pronounced just like neighbor] – your trusted neighborhood community. A few years later, in 1895 the first Entiat Post Office was established. The Entiat Power Plant opened for business in 1908. The Keystone Fruit Company opened for business in the valley in 1910, and railroad service began in Entiat in 1914. But in 1915 a second fire threatened the "first" town of Entiat and only six businesses survived. Nevertheless Entiat was officially incorporated on April 25, 1944. - Thanks for listening. A Madison school executive is headed to Appleton, Music Theater of Madison is dropping a concept album and the Madison Black Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Black business resilience. Plus, vaccinations are slowing down, but COVID stats are still ok.
Paul talks with Joe Gleason, Assistant Executive Director at the Capitol Center for the Arts, about the story of one of the premier performing arts venues in New Hampshire, and what is coming there next as they prepare to emerge from the pandemic shutdown.
While my music theater is not quite a style, there is a specific approach on how to sing it. Musically there are many styles in music theater, but there are some main principles to follow for all music theater. Remember, the goal of music theater is for a character to present a message, to tell their story, and to develop in the course of the show. In many modern musicals, There is a mini story inside of the song itself. In the end there are both musical and phrasing things that need to be done and there are also expression things that need to be done. We will talk about it all in this episode!

The 15th episode of Darmstadt On Air is hosted by a new composition tutor of the Darmstadt Summer Course: Sarah Nemtsov. She invited the set designer Sebastian Hannak to be her conversation partner in this podcast. At the opera house in Halle he created „Raumbühne Heterotopia“ in 2017, a 360° stage installation conceived as a music-theatre-city where the borders between audience, orchestra and performers are blurred for the benefit of an immersive spatial experience and emphatic „Totaltheater“. In more than ten different formats such as opera, drama, dance, performance or concert, the space can be experienced from totally different perspectives. Sebastian adapted his Heterotopia stage for several theater and music theater productions like Sarah’s opera „Sacrifice“ (2016). That was when the two artists met in Halle some years ago. He started to work on his set design when he only knew parts of Sarah’s music. Maybe more than ever before he was forced to invent reality for a piece on stage. For both of them theater is an extraordinary moment of transition.

About Guest: Antonio Blue (also known as King Rawzky) is a man on the rise, overcoming street life to get educated and succeed in music. As he’s come up, the support of some of those closest to him has diminished. When a relationship turned into a mental battle which threatened all he had worked for, he wasn’t sticking around. As part of his transformation, Blue studied Radio Broadcasting when he was younger. He later transferred to Music Technology and graduated college. He now attends the School of Music & Theater in Portland and feels his music education has made him more of a perfectionist about the study of music and his craft. Blue considers his music to be his empire, and a formal education arms him with the weapons he needs to defend that empire when challenged. Committed to bring unity to the community, Blue is a passionate human and animal rights advocate. Coming from poverty himself, Blue is able to share his education and mentor others who have been raised in the streets because they know he was once like them. He also works with animal rescue organizations in his area. Blue is a fierce protector of the weak and misfortunate, determined to help where he can and give back to society.
Norman Mathews has written for the concert stage, musical theater, and opera. He has also written a play, Drone, which recently one a place at FutureFest in Ohio. His autobiography, The Wrong Side of the Room: A Life in Music Theater, has been unanimously praised by critics. Mathews is also an experienced cook and gastronome, who operates a food blog on his website. Born in the wrong town, the wrong era, and with the wrong name, Norman Mathews was forced to conjure a more enticing, if imaginary, world to better navigate the perils of childhood. In this world, he didn't suffer from a lack of self-assurance that dashed his dreams of romance and fame. He wasn't psychologically abused by a priest nor did he endure ludicrously funny psychotherapy over his sexuality. And he didn't attempt suicide, nearly shattering his promising future. But in the real world, he survived all of this and more, and in his autobiography details with stark honesty and humor how Mathews' resolve to build a meaningful life led him to the life of his dreams. From the ashes of near-calamity rose the existence Norman Mathews always dreamed of. An injury cut short his career as a performer and forced him to seek creative fulfillment elsewhere. He reinvented himself as a pianist, composer, and playwright and as such created award-winning works for the concert stage, Tony-Award winners, and opera luminaries. This passionate and inspirational autobiography is steeped in dark humor, celebrity gossip, and backstage intrigue. Mathews brings his colorful Sicilian-American family, his triumphs and heartbreaks, and his mine-strewn path to love vividly to life. This riveting drama is a paean to all late-bloomers - proof that no matter how many wrong cards you are dealt, it's possible, with hope and tenacity, to come up with a winning hand. http://normanmathewsauthor.com/

Spain’s own genre of music theater, zarzuela, is one of the country’s most distinctive cultural forms. In this episode, Prof. Clinton Young traces the evolution of the genre in the context of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in Spanish history, linking it to the development of the urban middle and working classes. We will listen to selections from several famous zarzuelas along the way, with Young analyzing how zarzuela contributed to Spain’s unique bottom-up nationalization process. Please see the episode webpage for a list of the selections.
And we’re back! We return to the topic of Improvisation—this time focusing on improv in the realm of Opera. (See episode 11 for Improv, Part One.) You might not consider Opera a venue for improvisation but the practice goes back to the Baroque era and the practice of ornamentation. Philip discusses this, and more, in a conversation including singer and long-time operatic improv partner Vern Sutton. The two first met at the University of Minnesota in the 1960s. They take us on a journey to Minnesota Opera in the 1970s and its fully improvised performances of The Newest Opera in the World, directed by Wesley Balk. Imagine an opera who’s libretto, roles and music style are dictated by the audience spinning a wheel of fortune—Act 1 might be Romantic while Act 2 is German Expressionism. “Improvisation teaches trust, it teaches ensemble,” notes Sutton. The two define the process and rigor involved in organizing eight singers to improv together over dozens of performances. They also discuss failing, the role of the audience, resilience, and Balk’s book about their experiences together, The Complete Singer-Actor: Training for Music Theater. The episode includes several instances of Vern singing while Philip collaborates on piano to illuminate various points.
In this episode I wanted to shed light on a different lane than normal. Join us this week on Christian Devotions SPEAK UP!as host Scott McCausey is joined by Recording Artist Julie Elias. Elias' career spanned various facets of the arts, from leading worship to musical theater, to fully embracing her call to become a recording artist. Though she's wholeheartedly committed to help listeners tap into their God-ordained purpose, she didn't arrive at her current calling overnight. In fact, her performance path looked completely different just two years ago when the Nevada native found herself in Hollywood pursuing work in film and television. A Christmas trip to her hometown in 2010 caused Elias to reexamine her career options. "It took a seemingly routine Christmas concert that year for me to realize what I've been called to do. As Elias gears up to make her mark on the modern day music scene with her engaging songwriting style and fresh pop/rock sound—influenced by Amy Grant, Natalie Merchant, Carrie Underwood, and Sheryl Crow, she's committed to spreading faith-affirming messages that are just as uplifting to believers as they are inspiring to seekers.
