"Your destiny path will never require you to be different than you are. It's what makes us unique, not what makes us the same as everyone else, that brings our success." In 2023, an autism and ADHD diagnosis changed Ayesha's life. Disfruten! @autismosinmiedo

Do you or a friend have ADHD, Bipolar, Anxiety or you're neurodivergent? Or experience any of these yourself? Not sure how to express and share how to best work with you? Or if you work with someone who has shared these things with you, do you want to know how you can better support them? Today, I am joined by my client, friend and marketing strategist, Monica Schrock (she/they), who has ADHD, Bipolar and General Anxiety Disorder. We'll be sharing tips, scripts and tools you can use to work with others who are neurodivergent, or if you are neurodivergent yourself -- what you can do.We live in a world of capitalism and productivity, the reality is that not all brains work the way capitalism wants them to. That's the only reason they're termed “disorders.” We have diverse brains and that's a beautiful thing, but it means there needs to be more understanding of what that means and how it impacts us.And instead of being judgmental, be curious. Monica and I share what scripts and tools you can do so we can all understand and work together. We also talk about our own grandmothers. I share how my grandmother had schizophrenia and bipolar, and how Monica's grandmother was Bipolar 1. Please note Monica and I are not mental health professionals and therapists, please seek a therapist or mental health if you need support. What We Cover in This Episode: The impact of marketing on mental health The challenges of managing ADHD, anxiety, and bipolar disorder Respecting boundaries and offering support tailored to the person's needs Prioritizing tasks and setting realistic goals on challenging days Why we need self-compassion and to not compare ourselves to others The importance of choice and agency, how you can set timelines that work for you If you would like to see how to work with me and Monica to create a more sustainable life where you can be more present with yourself and create your own checklist of success that's not created by society and loved ones, then schedule a Complimentary Legacy Business and Career Review at elainelou.com/call Related Podcast EpisodesEpisode 25. In this episode, we are joined by fantasy author, LGBTQ+ sensitivity reader, and international speaker and presenter October K. Santerelli! October's latest book, City of Day, was published this past February and is the first in a planned trilogy. We were so excited to have October on the podcast after first hearing him present on neurodivergency and the creative process at Superstars Writing Seminar in Denver, CO earlier this year! KWL's director Tara was in attendance, and she had many great take-aways from that amazing presentation. We chatted with October about his writing career, his presentations and speaking appearances at comic conventions, writing seminars, and more across the USA, neurodivergency and the creative process, his work as a sensitivity reader, and much more! We had a fun (and very informative) time chatting with October, and are excited to present this episode. Learn more about October via his website, and follow him on Tiktok, Tumblr and Instagram.
All humans want the same thing - to be HEARD and SEEN. And when a marriage begins to feel disconnected, you don't have to look too deep to realize that one or both partners are not feeling heard and seen. Our relationships often begin this way - where we know that our partner is truly seeing our deepest beauty. They're supportive of our heart's desires. And it's a shared experience. Your spouse feels like you see and appreciate their good too. Damn, those early days feel good, don't they? Listening and responding to each other's hearts is why we fell in love in the first place. But after a few years of marriage, kids, careers, home repairs, aging parents, bills, and retirement plans … and so much more … It's SO hard to slow down to hear and see our partners. I was talking to Cris about this the other day. Since he's an actor, I was curious … How - as an actor - does he tune everything out on stage and in front of cameras - to LISTEN and RESPOND to the other characters? So asked him what his process was - to genuinely listen. And we recorded the conversation! Here's what you'll learn in this episode: A simple process to listen to others when they're talking How to look deeper than the words they're saying. Why saying the “right thing” back should not be your focus. How to listen to your partner's heart and encourage their passions How listening is a practice that we'll be improving for a lifetime, but it's so worth it! Today's conversation takes place on our back porch, along with the birds and crickets! Join us! And then take the challenge to listen and respond to your partner this week!

“Neurodiversity” has become a familiar term across American society, but mere awareness of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, and other neurological differences doesn't mean much for the people who live with these – especially when it comes to finding work. Studies differ on exact numbers, but the unemployment rate among neurodivergent people (a more precise term than neurodiversity) is definitely higher than among the overall population, probably by a double-digit factor. “It's not just awareness,” says Judy Reilly, Judy Reilly, the director of the Werth Institute's Center for Neurodiversity & Employment Innovation at UConn. “The heavy lift is really in, Ok, so now what do we do? How do we build a process to include these candidates better for the jobs they're talented enough to do, and then how do we support them when we hire them?” The new Center, under Reilly, is at the forefront of a growing move in higher education and the American workplace to appreciate the skills and talents of neurodivergent individuals, and create environments where they can succeed. In this episode of UConn 360, Reilly talks about the shifting landscape in employment, the challenges of culture change in the workplace, and the reasons she's so passionate about her work. Then, in this episode's installment of Tom's History Shelf, Tom and Julie discover which building is the oldest on the UConn campus, and explain why it isn't the one you might be thinking of.

Here we talk to Barbara Bloomfield about neuro–divergency, and sex, and although the emphasis is not on older people, it is easy to see how the issues overlap and impact on each other. One of the things that older people missed out on when they were growing up back in the 50s and 60s is that many of the things taken for granted today about the way that we are, and the way that we made our way through life, were not available at the time. As a result, older people may be more sceptical about things like being "woke" and suchlike. Very often, one has to ask whether this scepticism is misplaced. What becomes clear in many of our interviews here is that people – mainly women – had had to put up with a lot of stuff and nonsense about bearing the load and carrying on when help was always available. Every time a new issue is born, there are, of course, those who wish to push it farther and faster, and of course, without them, these new developments would probably never be born in the first place. Now that they are here, it is incumbent upon the rest of us to decide whether there is anything in them.Neuro divergency is perhaps one such issue. When we were kids, it was certainly not an issue that was ever discussed. And yet there must've been neuro-divergent people (we could all probably name a few who would be so diagnosed these days – perhaps even ourselves) who just had to get through as best as they could. Now is the time to stop and take stock of the situation and ask how these various characterisations have impacted our relationships and attitudes towards sex and gender. The discussion here is precisely a part of that process. You can find Barbara's website here. Thanks for reading Sex Advice for Seniors! About six months ago I heard the word neurodivergent for the first time. The definition I heard was sort of limited and it left me fairly confused. Recently I received a press release from a friend that mentioned neurodivergency and Cate Osburn and I was intrigued. So, you know me, I had to invite her to come on the show to explain it to us. Catie is with us today and we'll talk about neurodivergency, ADHD, and much more. You may recognize her from her online username Catieosaurus – and from her very popular mental health podcast ‘Catie and Erik's Infinite Quest – an ADHD adventure'. We're also asking you to send in your questions about ADHD, sex and intimacy to readyforloveradio@gmail.com – if we get enough questions, we'll do another show and answer many of your questions. I'd love to do the show, so send in those questions!
Hey! This week, we read an excerpt from Thich Naht Hanh's book 'Peace is Every Step'. With love, gratitude and gentle awareness, - Cam

My special guest today is educator and author Jacki Edry. I learned so much from Jacki about neurodivergence in many forms. She has experience with neurodivergence as an educator, a mother, and through an experience she herself had. Jacki has great insights into how teachers and parents can help our neurodivergent students and children, to understand them, and give them the tools to really succeed. We packed a lot in this discussion! Also, I have a favor to ask, which I do from time to time, in addition to the usual pleas of make sure to subscribe and leave a review (although, please do those things!). It really makes a difference when you share an episode of Overthrowing Education with a friend or colleague. Whether it's this one (that I think every educator would benefit from) or another episode that really resonated with you, or an episode you think someone else would connect with or it would be helpful to. If you're listening to this podcast, it's probably because you really care about making education much, much better. The more we can share what good education could and should be, the faster we can make it happen. So, this week, please tell at least one person about this or another episode or the show in general. Students and parents will thank you for it. Don't forget about the Overthrowing Education swag. Get a great gift for an educator, including yourself. Neurodivergent students often get pulled out of classrooms and taught separately because they are “different.” Well, we're all a little bit different. Does that mean we should all be taught in silos? Not a chance. There's an inclusive program in the Seattle area that's supporting our colorful, mismatched students in a unique way that can help them on and off the stage. Youth are learning through theater and improvisation. This week on the podcast, I'm talking with Lauren Marshall, director of Theater of Possibility, about the organization's unique take on theater and learning. And joining Lauren is Jackie Moffit, one of the school's former students and current teachers. Together we explore the role the current education system has had on neurodivergent youth, why pull-out programs might work in some instances (but generally don't), the problem with special education, and why acting is a valuable tool for students with autism. About Lauren Marshall: Lauren Marshall is the founding director of Theater of Possibility, serving neurodiverse youth, since 2010. A produced and published playwright, she has an MFA in Music Theater writing from NYU, and BA and JD from Stanford. About Jackie Moffit: Jackie Moffit is an actor, writer, and musician on the autism spectrum who goes by any pronouns. They first started participating in Theater of Possibility in 2012 as a student and became an assistant teacher for the kids' class several years later. They are passionate about neurodiversity representation in education and the arts, and are excited for thier first session as lead teacher. In addition to his work with Theater of Possibility, Jackie also volunteers at Books to Prisoners and writes media reviews for the Northwest Film Forum and Redefine Magazine. Some of their interests include synthesizers, linguistics, and tabletop games. There is a joke in here somewhere I'm sure that the longest podcast I've ever recorded focuses largely on ADHD. The topic of neurodiversity however seems to be everywhere these days. Certainly amongst my peer group, I've seen many share recent diagnoses of ADHD and if you're on TikTok, the explainer videos are as ubiqutous as the dancing. Listening and reading about how neurodiversity has impacted so many lives, prompted me to start learning more. Enter Nadine Araksi, one of my peers who was diagnosed in her 40s with ADHD and wrote an article for Canadian Business about supporting neurodivergency in the workplace. Together with Christina Crowe from Dig A Little Deeper we spend the next hour discussing how ADHD can present different for women, how adult diagnoses can be a game changer, and how businesses can benefit from employing a neurodiverse workforce. There's a lot of great information in this one, and you may even find yourself having a few lightbulb moments like I did. Meet Nadine Araksi and Christina Crowe. Neurodivergency has been a hot topic across all platforms in the last few years, but aside from being trendy, it's also real. So much of the stigma surrounding neurodivergency is being trounced each and every day and it's people like Danielle Ralston who are leading the charge. Danielle is ADHD and dyslexic and had been written off as being mentally retarded when she was in school. She wasn't even given school books because none of her teachers felt as if she could be taught, so she didn't need her books. It all changed for her because of just one teacher. One amazing inspiration who knew that she was able and capable and helped her develop the tools she needed to succeed. That one teacher is the reason why Danielle is able to empower others today. She now owns multiple businesses and helps coach other neurodivergent business owners to reach their goals. Danielle is making waves in the business world and hopes to help others do the same. Highlights from This Episode:None of us does everything well, but we all have at least one important strength. Creating a task management system doesn't necessarily require a project management tool. When working with a neurodivergent client, it's important to set up systems that work specifically for them. Even if it takes extra time to develop and implement! You can run an OBM business with a team full of neurodivergent team members. It takes time, skill, and grace, but it's possible. If you're a neurodivergent business owner, it's important that you hire people who are your opposite to coordinate the things in your business. Evidence shows that neurodivergency occurs at a higher rate amongst people with hypermobility disorders. And we know that anxiety is also prevalent in the hypermobile population. When we look at neurodivergency, hypermobility, anxiety, and dysautonomia, we see hints of lines drawn between them. Might science soon be able to connect the dots? Jessica Eccles, senior clinical academic psychiatrist at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and specialist in brain-body neuroscience, returns to speak with Bendy Bodies about neurodivergency, hypermobility, and possible links with anxiety and the autonomic nervous system. In February 2022, Dr. Eccles published the peer reviewed journal article, "Joint hypermobility links neurodivergence to dysautonomia and pain". She discusses the fascinating results of her research, and explains why neurodivergency, dysautonomia, and pain appear to be connected via joint hypermobility. Dr. Eccles shares her findings of higher levels of musculoskeletal symptoms in the study's neurodivergent population vs the comparison group, and wonders if this may be a potential reason why people with neurodivergency experience more health symptoms. She explains the importance of raising awareness of the link between joint hypermobility and neurodivergency in the medical community, and discusses how anxiety is linked to joint hypermobility and possibly autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Dr. Eccles shares her work on the ADAPT program, a program aimed at reducing anxiety with a combined brain-body approach in hypermobile people. Still in its early stages, the program (Altering Dynamics of Autonomic Processing Therapy) has fascinating implications. Finally, Dr. Eccles reveals her current research projects and shares her hopes for future research. An incredible, accessible discussion by one of the top researchers in this field, this is an episode not to be missed. #neurodivergency #BendyBrain #dysautonomia #AutonomicNervousSystem #anxiety #ActuallyAutistic #adhd #ADHDAwareness #ASD #AutisticPride #DisabilityInclusion #RedInstead #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #neurodivergent #AutisticAdults #neurodiversity #autistic #autism #BendyBodies #BendyBodiesPodcast #JenniferMilner #ZebraStrong #hypermobility #HypermobilityDisorders

What happens when you put 3 Jews on a podcast slated for an hour? You get MORE than an hour! Sam Led, no-nonsense mindset and transformation coach, stops by for a mental health focused discussion about overcoming his anxiety and neurodiversity and empowering others to do the same. The subjects we cram into this episode vary within the mental health realm, such as the process of diagnosis when identifying what is happening in the brain, and sometimes not finding out what's happening after dealing with certain conditions for an extended period of time. We also touch on our shared Jewish ancestry, and the link to intergenerational trauma. We could tell right away in our conversation that Sam has a gift for helping people see that they are far more powerful than their fears, anxieties or bad habits. Here is an official BIO from Sam himself:Combining his studies from the University of South Florida and Nova Southeastern University, Sam shares a groundbreaking new understanding that has helped thousands of people tap into their natural innate health and resilience so they can overcome anxiety, fear, and unhealthy habits without strategies, techniques, or willpower. Sam has become a powerful conduit for those wishing to recover and flourish successfully from any major life setback or loss in their lives. After being misdiagnosed multiple times by well-meaning mental health professionals, he was final diagnosed with ADHD and experienced severe anxiety for over two decades. He was suffering silently. Then in 2005, after a series of traumatic events that lead him down a rabbit hole, he finally began to “see” that the nature of his suffering was made up and illusory. That he was one thought away from mental wellbeing (as we all are). That we are not living in a world of our outside circumstances, but we are living 100% in a world made up of thought. That the truth to who we are is below the noise.Sam's Links:WebsiteInstagram (@samledconsulting)PodcastGetting Jewcy Links:WebsiteWatch This Episode on YouTube!Instagram (@getting_jewcy)Facebook (@gettingjewcy)
Neurodivergent refers to an individual who has less typical cognitive variables such as Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc. Neurotypical refers to individuals of typical development and intellectual/cognitive functioning. We all bring our part to this conversation, held at a friend's humble home. Some of my closest friends talk and contribute our opinions on the topic of neurodivergence and our experiences with it as individuals. This direct source helps us captivate as well as grasp the term in more detail within the discussion.
Living with worsening chronic illness is not for the faint of heart. Especially when the medical realm doesn't make it any easier for women like me, who suffer with Endometriosis, to navigate seeking treatment and diagnosis. I've struggled with the chronic illness and chronic pain my whole life, yet I am only now getting the diagnosis and treatment I need for it at the age of 25 almost 26. And what's even more disheartening is....I am one of the lucky ones. 25 is considered a pretty young age for being diagnosed and receiving surgery for Endometriosis. Too often, women with this chronic illness will go their whole lives suffering in silence with no glimmer of hope, knowledge, or guidance in sight. This is absolutely unacceptable. Even though I finally got to the point of getting my Laparoscopy & Excision surgery scheduled with an Endometriosis specialist, it took me 2 years of actively pursuing this exact result to finally get to this point. And by the tie I found myself with a treatment plan, I was already broken down and gaslit into hopeless defeat. Should I be surprised that I've faced very similar experiences within my mental health journey and getting the diagnosis I need to provide a sense of closure and deeper understanding of myself? Perhaps the answer is no, sadly. I've been talked over, misunderstood, patronized, and misdiagnosed every single time I sought out help from a professional in some capacity. The road to seeking out the diagnosis for my ADHD wasn't easy, but when I finally received the formal diagnosis & began receiving treatment for the ADHD my life drastically changed for the better. Had I not advocated for myself, had a clear understanding of my symptoms, and trusted my intuition--I'd be receiving treatment for a personality disorder that I did not have. And now I am in the beginning stages of the journey into seeking out a formal diagnosis for Adult Autism. As I continue to navigate this aspect of my life, I have a stronger sense of what I may come across in regards to ignorance from medical health professionals & how to navigate that. I will continue to seek out necessary help from those who are qualified to do so, and I will not stop until I receive that answers I need to help me understand myself more deeply. If you are interested in my Endometriosis, ADHD, and Autism journey--subscribe and follow me on my platforms. I will continue to make more content and keep you guys up to date on all of these subjects. Cause god knows we need more information and stories out there. Peace & love, Irene ·Connect with me·

I never thought I would get to speak to someone in the legendary Californian city of Fresno. I always though it was short for a bigger title too, but turns out to be Spanish for Ash tree. Eve Reliand who claimed the name Autistic Bad Ass Activist before anyone else, kindly spoke to me for my podcast.Eve is best introduced as an autistic activist, artist, writer and parent. she is the founder of InternationalBadassActivists (one word for all you autistic pendants out there), and a co-founder of the Autistic Co operative. Eve started writing for self advocacy in 2005 and launched her first campaign around autism in 2008. Eve's goals are to make a better future for all autistic s born today, amplify divergent voices and document just what has been going on in the world of autism but from our perspective rather than the neurotypical curing parent one that seems to want absolute domination over every narrative and agenda known. Her wonderful films on social media must be seen to be believed. History will be very glad that Eve has gone to the effort that she has. This week's episode is a discussion with Dr Siobhan Lamb, a former Science teacher at SCEGGS and now the director of her own business “Embrace Difference”. This business provides support for children, parents and educators where neurodivergency is a common environment under which people operate. Her experience, studies and approach provide a refreshing response to such a complex issue. I hope you get as much out of this conversation as I had recording it.

A fact that she reckons entitles her to a sainthood, never mind being made a Member of the British Empire for services to autistic people (well at least the British Crown recognises us as such).Carly's story found her alone against all the odds raising three children, and later in life finding out through them that she was autistic. Neurodivergency occurs at a much higher rate amongst people with hypermobility disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes and hypermobility spectrum disorders. What's the connection? Jessica Eccles, MD, senior clinical academic psychiatrist at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and specialist in brain-body neuroscience, recently spoke with Bendy Bodies about these neurological conditions that include dyslexia, autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia. Dr. Eccles led the first neuroimaging study of hypermobility and her work has focused on neuropsychiatric manifestations of connective tissue disorders. Dr. Eccles stresses that neurodivergency isn't a disability or disorder, but a different way of neurological processing. She explains surprising findings of her research including possible explanations for the link between hypermobility and anxiety. Dr. Eccles reveals that people with EDS (Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes) are seven times more likely to be autistic, and six times more likely to have ADHD, compared to the general population. She stresses the importance of recognizing the link between hypermobility and neurodivergency and dives into proprioceptive issues and dyspraxia. Dr. Eccles offers suggestions for seeking help if you suspect you are neurodivergent. She also provides advice for teachers and parents to be more effective in their roles with neurdivergent artists. As Dr. Eccles states, “Neurodivergency shouldn't be thought of as something to hold you back, but something to embrace.” If you or someone you know may be neurodivergent, this is an episode not to be missed.
