Organizational psychologist Adam Grant is an expert on opening other people's minds--and our own. Listen to him discuss "Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know" with Michael in this podcast. Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. In our daily lives, too many of us favor the comfort of conviction over the discomfort of doubt. We listen to opinions that make us feel good, instead of ideas that make us think hard. We see disagreement as a threat to our egos, rather than an opportunity to learn. We surround ourselves with people who agree with our conclusions, when we should be gravitating toward those who challenge our thought process. The result is that our beliefs get brittle long before our bones. Original air date 3 February 2021. The book was published on 2 February 2021.

My wife often jokes that I read 4-5 books simultaneously. It's true! If you own a digital book reader or use an audiobook app like Audible to consume books, then you've probably jumped between a title or two as well, depending on your mood. By Editor, Concierge Medicine Today I personally love bouncing between a few titles and topics. I think the secret is listening or reading one chapter at a time once or twice a week! Then, I jump onto a podcast path, perhaps with a similar author I find interesting in the car or during a workout. But finding the right balance between learning and pleasure is important, especially FOR Doctors! Reading a few books simultaneously helps me avoid getting stuck or bored. If a book or a chapter is too slow, allow yourself to skip a track or jump a few pages. Life is too short, and there are too many great books to push through painfully. Throughout nearly the past two decades here at Concierge Medicine Today, we compiled a list of books that either I've read and found helpful or your peers and those we've interviewed over the years here at Concierge Medicine Today, our conference, the Concierge Medicine Forum, or our podcast, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast, have been recommended to us on this topic. "What's the most economical, acceptable, compliance-based solution?" In our latest podcast episode, we sat down with returning guest Michael J. Soller P.E. CPC, DBIA the Vice President of Business Development at Bowen Engineering Corporation. Michael shares his deep expertise in compliance, problem-solving, and project management in the treatment of industrial wastewater discharge. Drawing from his technical paper titled “Treatment of Aerospace Machining and Inspection Wastewater,” published through the International Water Conference (IWC), Michael's insights offer valuable lessons for both seasoned professionals and newcomers to the field. What was the challenge in treating aerospace machining wastewater? Michael's team was tasked with solving a unique and complex problem: treating wastewater from aerospace machining and inspection processes, which included both oily and chemical-laden water. The challenge? The wastewater had a makeup that was difficult to treat using standard industrial methods due to high variability in water quality, coupled with strict environmental regulations. Michael explains, "The project demanded an innovative approach to remove oils, emulsifiers, and heavy metals, all while ensuring that we met the discharge standards set forth by regulatory bodies." His team had to develop a custom treatment system that could handle the specific composition of the wastewater and still operate efficiently on a day-to-day basis. How was the technical problem solved? Michael's approach revolved around advanced treatment technologies. His team implemented a combination of physical separation processes, chemical treatment, and membrane filtration to address the variable wastewater composition. They also designed the system to operate within tight environmental discharge limits. "We needed a solution that was flexible yet robust enough to consistently meet compliance while accounting for changes in water makeup," he says. His team's strategy of using adaptable treatment methods ensured that the system could be fine-tuned as needed without sacrificing performance or sustainability. How Can We Ensure Compliance in Wastewater Management? Michael walked us through a crucial aspect of industrial water treatment: staying in compliance with local discharge standards. Daily monitoring, regular equipment maintenance, and thorough record-keeping are essential. As Michael put it, it's a simple equation: "Either they're in compliance or they're not." One standout example is how his client wisely operated at a 60-70% capacity rather than pushing their system to 100%. This allowed room for planned maintenance and unexpected issues without jeopardizing compliance. Michael highlighted the importance of planning for maintenance, saying, "They know they're going to have variability, so they plan accordingly." This proactive approach minimizes the risk of being caught off guard and incurring fines or downtime. Managing Projects Without Sacrificing Capacity In industrial projects, there's often a temptation to "value engineer" and eliminate extra capacity to cut costs. Michael shared a compelling example of how a customer made a deliberate choice to avoid this pitfall, ensuring they had the necessary leeway to maintain and repair equipment without maxing out their system's capacity. For customers who may be hesitant about building in extra capacity, Michael recommends having an honest and clear conversation about roles and responsibilities. He stresses that clients must make the final decision, but it's the engineer's job to provide accurate data and practical recommendations. Lessons for Future Industrial Water Projects Michael's work on aerospace wastewater treatment offers practical lessons for other industries facing similar challenges. From early collaboration with key stakeholders to thorough pilot testing of treatment methods, Michael stresses the importance of meticulous planning. "One of the biggest lessons we learned is to engage with the operations team from the beginning. Their input is invaluable in designing a system that will work smoothly in practice," Michael points out. By incorporating feedback from plant operators and end-users, his team was able to build a solution that not only met environmental regulations but also aligned with operational needs. Dive Deeper into Michael's Paper For those interested in a more technical dive, you can access Michael's full paper, “Treatment of Aerospace Machining and Inspection Wastewater,” linked in our show notes. It's a must-read for anyone tackling similar industrial water challenges or looking to enhance their knowledge of specialized wastewater treatment processes. The challenge is…calculate the Holding Time Index on your cooling towers. Notice I said “towers” in plural. This is something you should know about all your cooling towers. My first question for you is what is a Holding Time Index, and why is such a calculation important. What information do you need to calculate it? The Holding Time Index can also be called the half-life or retention time. It is a measure of how much time it takes for a chemical that is added to a system to be diluted to 50% of its original concentration due to blowdown and possibly other water losses. This can be particularly important for biocides since some require longer contact times than others to be effective. Fast-acting biocides may only require a contact time of half an hour, while slow-acting biocides may require several hours. The Holding Time Index can also be important for polymers in a system as well. A high Holding Time Index means the polymer will be in the system longer, which could lead to the polymer losing its effectiveness as it is bound up or degraded. The equation for the Holding Time Index isn't a hard one. It is simply 0.7 multiplied by volume and divided by the blowdown rate. Be sure the unit of measure for volumes are the same for both the cooling tower volume and its blowdown. For example, use volume in gallons if your blowdown rate is gallons per hour or gallons per minute. Lastly, the units of time that your final answer will be expressed in will be whatever follows the word “per” in the blowdown rate. If you used gallons per hour, you Holding Time Index answer will be in hours. If you used gallons per minute, your Holding Time Index answer will be in minutes. Now go out there and calculate those Holding Time Indexes! Events for Water Professionals Check out our Scaling UP! Truth in Learning: in Search of Something! Anything!! Anybody?
Matt and Clark are so happy to have our dear friend and colleague, Elham Arabi join for the episode. In this show, we explore the nuance, and sometimes vague aspects, of culturally responsive learning and how that intricately ties to research and practice. In other words, what are the business cultural facets that affect learning initiatives. What norms, standards, values, and political schema all have impacts?Matt shamelessly references his own model for why stakeholders say no... (1) They don't buy the premise-- they don't accept the problem as stated. (2) They don't buy the solution. They accept the problem as stated, but not the solution you offer. (3) Or, they accept the problem AND the solution as offered, but don't like or trust you to deliver it.Elham referenced Adam Grant's book Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know. If you want to watch the debate between Clark and Will, you will have to join LDA at the platinum level to access the video here: https://ldaccelerator.com/joinMatt references Self-Determination Theory (SDT). SDT is a widely research theory for how people are motivated. The premise is that all humans have three basis psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness). When those needs are met, one is more likely to be intrinsically motivated toward a task. When they are undermined, one is like to be more extrinsically motivated, or not motivated at all. The theory was initially devised and studied by Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan while they were at the University of Rochester. Here is a link to an article Matt wrote on the topic in context to learning: https://ldaccelerator.com/lda-blog-1/open-the-motivational-door-and-let-the-learners-in-and-keep-them. On July 2, 2020 patrol officers attempted to contact a suspect about moving an illegally parked automobile at the Three Rivers Mobile Home Park in Hastings, MN. As officers spoke to the suspect's wife and two of his four children the suspect locked and barricaded the door to his trailer with his other two children inside. Over the course of the next 15 hours, in sweltering heat, the South Metro SWAT Team, in conjunction with Washington County SWAT, and Ramsey County SWAT, attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution to the crisis as the suspects mental state deteriorated. Although they were able to obtain one of the two children, it started to become clear that a tactical intervention would be necessary. My guests today are Adam Tschida, Daniel Salmey, and Jeff Hanson from South Metro SWAT to discuss the case, their successful HRT intervention, and the lessons learned from a very challenging rescue. About South Metro SWATSouth Metro SWAT provides tactical coverage for thirteen different law enforcement agencies in Minnesota. The team's service area spans roughly 1000 square miles south of the Twin Cities and is home to approximately 380,000 residents. The team has roughly 50 members. 35 tactical members including: commander, assistant commander, team leaders, snipers, breachers, medics, K9, etc. 15 crisis negotiations team members included: assistant commander, team leader, sworn LE, licensed mental health personnel. Core competencies include: hostage rescue, high risk warrant service, barricaded suspect/subject operations, dignitary protection, public order operations, man tracking operations, vehicle suppression, and community event security/quick reaction force.Books RecommendedLincoln on Leadership: Executive Strategies for Tough Times - Donald T. The Benefit of Knowing What You Don't Want! We all talk and hear about the things we do want, but how often do you think about what you don't want? I'm always of a positive mindset, but on today's podcast I wanted to share the Benefit of Knowing What You Don't Want. We often get caught up in the shiny stuff when it comes to what we want. We dream and manifest what we want BUT do we make wrong decisions because we don't know what we don't want? When you know what you don't want it makes decisions so much easier, like buying a new car or house or choosing work. Send me a DM and let me know what AHA moments you had during this episode. Margo talks about the key point of ‘unlearning' – unlearning the conditional and linear thinking pattern we're used to, as it is not reflective of how our brains learn or how life is. Margo talks about the adaptability of the program, offering choice for learners in their own learning path. There are revisit opportunities for those who need to ask questions, deep dives for those who want to explore more, and “choose your own explore” for those who want to venture into other areas of interest. The program is based on the foundation of agile principles and critical, creative, and systems thinking, setting the foundation to learn how to learn. Industry experts are also brought in to offer additional knowledge on topics that appeal to the cohort. EMBRACING DIVERSITY IN TEACHING & LEARNING Diversity is an integral part of teaching and learning. In the work that Margo does, people come with a diversity of backgrounds, education, age, culture, industry, and neurodiversity. It ultimately drives deeper, richer learning as well as better learning and tech outcomes. It is so important to embrace and understand how other people might have...
Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
When it comes to self-help, it's important to be cautious of information that seems too good to be true. Especially, in today's world of digital wellness influencers where there is a lot of misinformation out there that could cause you more harm than good. Subsequently, it's essential to thoroughly research products and services before making any decisions or commitments. To raise awareness about this issue, we (Debbie, Jill, and Yael) got together to co-host an episode dedicated to this very important conversation. We also invited Pooja Lakshmin, a board-certified psychiatrist and author of the book ‘Real Self-Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness' to discuss the nuances of pseudoscience and what it means to practice real self-care. Expect evidence-based self-care methods, in addition to tips on how to do your due diligence as a consumer. Today, leadership means asking questions.Tod Bolsinger, the author of Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory joins host Jon Eckert to discuss what questions Christian leaders can start asking to become stronger leaders. Aaron is back after I went solo last week. We like to do at least an episode a month where Aaron and I get some one-on-one time to discuss thoughts we've been having and concepts we've been mulling over to improve our photography practice and overall life. Aaron is interested in starting a photo-book venture so we talk about that and use it as a vehicle to get into deeper discussion about when to trust and not trust our gut feeling. We emphasize the importance of practicing humility and not pretending to have an understanding of everything and anything. "Knowing What You Don't Know" is a great way to seek expert advice and collect an array of input and data before making decisions. We revisit the importance of having fun grinding and struggling along our journey to get to where we want to. Without the struggle, there would be no progress, and no fulfillment. What You'll Learn From This Episode:Today Madeline and Cynthia explore that dreadful word, ”should”. Taking a look at how this plays out in our lives. The “should” is likely generated by the mind in its rational wisdom. The underlying feelings are held by the body. How often do we ignore or completely dismiss them and do what we “should”?Each time we do that, we tell our Self that we're not important (or at least not as important as the thing we “should” do). Each time we disconnect a little more from our authentic Self. We give away our authentic power. In today's conversation, we explore the meaning behind "should" and discover what we CAN leave behind. What we discussed:(01:06) Introduction: That word that pops up this time of year(03:01) The RAIN Technique(05:45) Letting your thoughts come and go(07:42) The job of emotions(08:48) Internal vs. external pressure(14:24) Who is in the driver's seat?(16:20) "Should" as a motivator(18:41) Stories we tell ourselves(20:41) Putting things through the internal filter(22:31) Bringing it all together(24:22) Ending with a quote(25:06) Closing notesFor further reading and tools: Tools and resources we discussed in the episode:- The RAIN Technique by Tara Brach- Emotions as information - which is not always accurate!- Letting thoughts come and go, but not inviting for teaMore resources to explore this topic:Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know by Grant, AdamSelf-Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself by Neff, Kristin, Ph.D.Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brené Brown RAIN Technique by Tara BrachBrene Brown (Rising Strong)When you find that you're having a line of thoughts that may or may not be true and you want to confront this in an unaggressive kind way, do the following: Take a deep breath and find 10 seconds of kindness. Say “The story I'm telling myself…” and finish with a worry or a fear. Then, say nothing. And have a (hopefully productive) dialogue with yourself. Coaching For Pastors - Daily Coaching, Encouragement, and Support for Pastors
Jeff takes a metaphor from Adam Grant's book, Think Again - and challenges pastors to choose the Rethinking Cycle, instead of the Overconfidence Cycle.Pastors are the spiritual thought leaders in the community, or should be, and must be open to the dynamic of life-long learning. It requires humility and, surprisingly, doubt! But you can do it, and Jeff unpacks how.Pick up Grant's book, Think Again - The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know. Diese Woche in der Zukunft: Sprechen wir über Führung. Irgendwer muss doch schließlich dafür sorgen, dass Unternehmen, Organisationen, Teams sich entwickeln – kurzum: Ein Stück Zukunft schaffen. Schauen wir also auf die Führungskraft. Was braucht sie, um gestalten zu können? Was, um Transformation auszulösen? I'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional un-ceded, un-surrendered territory of the Anishnaabeg Algonquin People.Leading is hard. Sure, there are some moments where being the leader is lots of fun, you know what I'm talking about, those moments where we are filled with pride at seeing a job well done, or when we've mentored or coached a team member and we see them succeed. But just as often, leaders are faced with difficult situations that make being an emerging leader a challenging spot to be in. If only there was a podcast dedicated to helping emerging leaders......Anyhoo, in this episode, we're going to discuss one of the most common challenges that emerging leaders face, and that's having the hard conversation. To do this, we'll hear from ToriAnn Perkey and Laura Couvillon, who are fellow podcast hosts, and the founders of IntegrateUp an online recruiting business. Laura and ToriAnn will offer their insights and experiences on how to approach those hard talks. But wait!!!! I'm also bringing back a fan favourite, Brandon Maloney, the founder of Sketchs Ink, and he will join the group as a co-host, who will also offer his views on hard conversations that he's experienced as an entrepreneur. And it is really, really simple. http://photoinf.com/Golden_Mean/Dale_Cotton/Daystar_Lessons_in_Composition.htm Love is tricky business. Despite our desire and need for finding love - we are not really good at it. Perhaps that is because we are looking for the wrong characteristics according to Ty Tashiro. Ty is a psychologist, social scientist and author of the book, The Science of Happily Ever After: What Really Matters in the Search for True Love (https://amzn.to/3o3IWtO). Listen as he explains what turns out to be really important but is often overlooked in creating a lasting love relationship. We are taught from am early age that it is important to learn and think. Yet just as important as learning and thinking may be UN-learning and RE-thinking. Adam Grant is an organizational psychologist at Wharton, where he has been the top-rated professor for seven straight years. He is host of the very successful TED podcast called Work Life with Adam Grant and his latest book is called Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know (https://amzn.to/3o51NVk). Adam grant episode Adam Grant is one of my heroes. He is an author, organizational psychologist, the top rated professor at Wharton School of Business, and not only a TED speaker, but also a TED podcaster. He has a TED podcast called Work Life. I first learned about Adam Grant from his 2016 book “The Originals: How Non-Conformists Moved the World.” I’ve gifted this book dozens and dozens of times and still continue to. The Originals is where I learned about the concept of Horizontal Hostility, which if you know me, you’ve heard me mention it at least once. His latest book “Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know” could not be more timely. And we get into to all of it. How we “think” and change our minds, what intuition actually is and if it is always good, horizontal hostility of course, doing work you need for yourself and so much more. This is one of my favorite podcast episodes and one of my favorite conversations I’ve ever had. I hope you enjoy every single minute of it. You can follow him on Twitter @AdamMGrant and listen to his podcast Work Life with TED wherever you get your pods!
