Psychologists and neuroscientists struggle with how best to interpret human motivation and decision making. The assumption is that below a mental “surface” of conscious awareness lies a deep and complex set of inner beliefs, values, and desires that govern our thoughts, ideas, and actions, and that to know this depth is to know ourselves. In the The Mind Is Flat: The Remarkable Shallowness of the Improvising Brain (Yale UP, 2019), behavioural scientist Nick Chater contends just the opposite: rather than being the plaything of unconscious currents, the brain generates behaviors in the moment based entirely on our past experiences. Engaging the reader with eye-opening experiments and visual examples, Chater first demolishes our intuitive sense of how our mind works, then argues for a positive interpretation of the brain as a ceaseless and creative improviser. Dr. Nick Chater is Professor of behavioral science at the Warwick Business School and cofounder of Decision Technology Ltd. He has contributed to more than two hundred articles and book chapters and is author, co-author, or co-editor of fourteen books. NLP Fam: Meet us in our Frantz Fanon because it's giving a major philosophical pod! Some of us may be experiencing a heat wave this week, but today's conversation about the shallow end and the deep end is only metaphorically related to a pool: Is it safer, in life and in relationships with others, to go deep or to stay shallow? In this week's MiniPod, hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum unpack the many sides of that question and discuss how depth can be both intellectual and emotional, and how perceived shallowness can sometimes be deceptively deep. We all choose the moments where we reveal our depth to others, or even to ourselves. How do we make those choices? Welcome home y'all! —--------- We want to hear from you! Preached at The Qodesh by Bishop Nii Adjeidu Armar.
Guests: Bruce and Chris Curran Above all else, guard your heart, for from it comes the wellspring of life. Proverbs 4:23 You can tell the condition of a marriage by watching/listening to the wife. Suffering removes shallowness. If you want to go deep with God, you're going to have to go through difficult times. Tough times produce dependent people - people willing to lean not on their own understanding, but in all their ways they learn to submit to God and trust His goodness and plans - see Proverbs 3:5. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 Maybe some of the difficult things you're going through are going to be used by God for a greater purpose - His purpose - not only in your life, but in the lives of others, to expand the Kingdom of heaven! Some trust in chariots and some in horses [and some in doctors], but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7 Who will you put your trust in - your business, your health, your education, your past accomplishments…or will you put your trust in the One who created the heavens and the earth and holds all things in His hands? As they get older, Bruce and Chris have learned to care about “less and less” - God is concerned about people - what are your primary concerns? And sometimes you have to “go 30 miles in” before you see it - you have to go deeper. This episode is going to be pretty spicy in a variety of ways. That's because we're going to think about the role that physical attraction plays in romantic relationships. In particular, were going to zoom in on three related topics:Firstly, what exactly does it mean to be “shallow,” and why is it even bad to be shallow?Secondly, even if we ourselves aren't shallow, society at large is. People are told in various subtle ways that they do or don't deserve to be with another person because of their physical attractiveness. So what should we think about these kinds of social hierarchies of attractiveness that get thrown at us? Lastly, is it ok to think that someone else is more physically attractive than our partner? If we are refusing to be shallow and instead choosing partners based on a more wholistic criteria, then isn't this a likely scenario? Having developed the Internet and connected the world to our fingertips, we tend to think of ourselves as enlightened beings very different from our medieval or ancient counterparts and with very separate problems. Are our modern problems really just modern problems? Or, are they just prevailing issues repackaged for our modern sensibilities? And, if so, how can classics help us address these “modern" problems? And, why are these issues so superficially discussed throughout the culture and Western church? What can we do to deepen these conversations? Dr. Spencer Klavan and I tackle these and other questions in this first episode of 2023 and the first episode of season 4 of the podcast.Topics:The lack of depth in Western cultureThe trickling down of philosophyHow classics are relevant to todayWhy haven't we fixed anything yet?Shallowness in Western ChurchDr. Spencer Klavan's recommended reading list"What books have had an impact on you?""What advice do you have for teenagers?"Dr. Spencer Klavan is an associate editor at the Claremont Review of Books and a podcaster on the great works of the West. What is love anyway? How do we know when we are in real love and not fear-based, egoic love? In this solo episode, host, Andrea Atherton will discuss the difficulty in differentiating real love from the influence of social media, movies, and culture as a whole. This teaches us that love is based on control, manipulation, and codependency. Attachment and connection are primal needs for all of us humans. Self-awareness and reflection as well as self-love are key components to building a strong foundation to create a conscious relationship. It is very important for a Christian to be found going deeper and doing more and without going deeper, great things cannot be accomplished for God. This Monday Bishop Dag will teach you about some things you must go deeper into in order to achieve greater things for God. Shallowness and a lack of depth can not cause anything great to come out of you and today you'll learn the sacrifices you must make in order to become deep.

God wants his children to be full of the spirit. Emptiness and shallowness are major causes of backsliding and results in a believer gradually moving away from the Lord. Through todays teaching Bishop Dag shares practical biblical wisdom to help the listener develop deeper roots in the Christian faith.
