Blake Fly has taken the pain out of sales and marketing and made it fun. The secret? Just being thankful and kind. Blake is the founder of “Thank University” and teaches entrepreneurs how to build their businesses (and not be weirded out by) delivering unexpected appreciation and gratitude. Here he joins The YES Effect Podcast with Shelli Varela to share how he started and grew his “Thank You” movement (what began as a holiday party), and some simple, everyday things you can do to be more top of mind for potential customers and collaborators, by simply being kind. How he encouraged one of his Thank University members to finally finish a book…simply by making it all about his own dad. Quotables: “Sales & marketing can be a blast if we're OK with making it weird and wacky by being our super normal self.” -BF “Do it imperfectly, because it actually guarantees you a better outcome.” -SV “Making a deal bigger in business (means) lean in and bet on yourself. Why not?” -BF “How many times do we miss an opportunity to let someone know they matter to make someone be seen or remind somebody that we believe in them?” -SV “Instead of making sales and marketing, what is the invitation to what party, and what's a cool way to give out as many invitations to the ideal people as possible?” -BF “Oftentimes, before you can believe in yourself, you need to borrow somebody else's confidence. And sometimes you never know how simple it is to change somebody's day but somebody's life.” -SV Links mentioned in this episode: Blake's “3 Simple Ways To INSTANTLY Connect With Potential Promotional Partners” https://instantconnecting.com/ Blake on IG: https://www.instagram.com/blakefly/?hl=en Join The YES Effect Inner Circle Facebook Group for a behind the scenes experience about what it means to Believe, Belong and Become! Against overwhelming odds and improbable beginnings, anything is possible when you have the will to succeed. That's a lesson my guest today lives by. I'm talking to a dear friend, TEDx Speaker and Fire Captain, Shelli Varela, who lives her life redefining what is possible over and over again. Formerly, she was an artist unclear about her life's path. While meeting a firefighter, she discovered the chance to not only learn about the job but ignite something magical within herself. She would use that magic to correct some of the teachings she'd been given and help transform her fire department. During my interview with Shelli, we explore many topics including: How do you know what really lights you up? Which three words changed the trajectory of Shelli's life? Why was her story of her 8-year old bullied self more effective than her firefighter story? What is Shelli's definition of story and what nuggets can you walk away with that can change your perception? What you will learn in this episode: How different stories can affect your audience Why vulnerability makes for better storytelling How you can create memories for others Who is Shelli? In 1994, Shelli Varela became the first female firefighter in Canada's 6th largest city. She had to overcome the physical odds of her 108-pound body, and after initial failure and months of work, she succeeded. She not only went on to become its first and only female Fire Captain but also twice won the Firefighter of the Year Award. At first, Shelli hesitated to apply for a firefighter position. But then, she heard three words whispered in her ear that forever changed the course of her life. Ever since, she's been teaching others to uncover and tell their stories in powerful ways, in addition to still fighting fires. She's even authored a children's book to teach readers that everything is possible and you can accomplish anything you choose. Shelli has the gift of seeing the gift in other people. Her life path now involves using this gift to help her clients re-frame their stories so they can change the world with it. Her motto: a well-told story serves, spreads, and sells. Shelli shares her story about how 25 years ago she was hired as her city’s first female firefighter and made the choice to say yes to her truth. She was brave enough to rewrite her story and today she’s a coach, speaker (with a phenomenal TED talk), and author teaching others to say yes to their truth. Here are some of the highlights, but you'll definitely want to listen to her whole story. 1: The world had labeled her an artist but it wasn’t fitting. [01:41] 25 years ago Shelli was a 108-pound manicurist ending high school and trying to figure out what to do with her life. She shares how it wasn’t until she shed the label of “Shelli the artist” to one that was “Shelli who likes art, and whatever else Shelli feels like liking” that she became free to explore other opportunities. 2: Three words that changed her life. [06:16] She was intrigued by firefighting, but she thought, “I’m not big enough, brave enough, smart enough, and strong enough. There are no girls in firefighting.” But her friend who was a firefighter challenged her saying: “There’s going to be a girl one day. Why not you?” The words “Why not me?” reverberated in her thoughts. A switch went off. She spent the next 1,162 days hacking and learning every single thing she needed to learn to succeed. 3: Forget logic, learn how to hack possibility. [12:56] Shelli talks about the times that sucked as a firefighter, but how they were the times she grew the most. Today she coaches people on their internal story – the story that keeps you small. She shared with me her five pillar system that helps people hack possibility – foundation, alignment, courage, expertise, and community. My heart leapt when she said, “And to accomplish anything lofty or worthy of your time and your greatness, you cannot lead with logic. You have to lead with possibility.” 4: Everything is possible when… [26:35] Shelli explains everything is possible when you learn to tell yourself a better story. When you do, you not only heal yourself but you can change the world. On the other hand, not managing your story can be catastrophic to your emotional health, to your mental health, and to your physical health because it’s not living in your truth. 5: Reframing your story is not for the weak of heart. [30:43] Shelli had some profound insight on reframing your story. She said you have to be brave because the stories that are holding you back also serve you in some way. There is the payoff for believing the old story, otherwise, you would let it go. So you have to drill down and see where you’re out of alignment and that requires you to step into something that’s not comfortable.

I recently did an episode with Shelli Varela from The Yes Effect Podcast as Shelli and I chat quite often about life, and one day she asked me to join her on her podcast and talk about why I do what I do. And let me tell you how raw and uncomfortable it was for me to go into that, and dive deep into why I do what I do. I thought this was a wonderful idea to share this episode because it's a wonderful way for me to connect with YOU the Path Hunters tribe and get to know where I come from a bit.
You are about to fall in love with an amazing woman on today's episode. Shelli Varela literally kicks ass. She is a firefighter, life coach, speaker, podcaster and all around powerful creator and we are so happy to introduce you to her. "You are either winning or learning." ~Shelli Varela A little more background on Shelli with her bio-- "Shelli Varela is the creator of the inspiring, innovative system that helps confused, uncertain or otherwise hesitant women go guns-a-blazin’ towards the life of their dreams. As someone who was once a struggling artist herself, Shelli knew what it was like to want big things…..but never knew which path to take to get there. That’s when she stumbled into the world of firefighting (Yes, firefighting!). A career option that seemed as far-fetched from an art career as you could imagine, there was something about the thrill of the chase, the challenge and the reward that fulfilled her in all sorts of new and exciting ways. Soon (actually 1162 days later), she found herself with the title of first female firefighter in Canada’s sixth largest city, and ultimately worked her way up to Fire Captain– despite many naysayers and doubters, who once even included herself. Shelli’s struggle to earn a role in a non-traditional career taught her a few things including key concepts such as transformational mindset, goal architecting and strategic success engineering. Shelli now uses her system to show people how to achieve their own dreams- regardless of what they may be." Shelli Varela is a “possibility hacker,” public speaker, and Canada’s first female firefighter in one of the largest cities in the country. She went from being a young 20-something struggling artist working in makeup, film, and special effects to finding her true passion, her true calling, as a firefighter, working her way up to Fire Captain.
How To Think Like A Possibility Hacker This time around I interviewed Shelli Varela, first female firefighter in Canada's 6th largest city. Graced the tedx stage twice, podcast host of the yes effect podcast. She embodies the path hunters spirit, and what she calls the possibility hacking, deciding that she wanted to pursue a career of a firefighter but at the time there were not female fiire fighters. Later on she asked herself a question “why not me?” The only catch was Shelli is 5'2” and 108lbs. That didn't stop here though she was determined and after 1162 days later she became a full fledged firefighter. A huge thing that Shelli mentioned is that it was her ability to constantly say yes and decided to take action which enabled her to do so much. She was living, breathing and visualizing every single day of that phone telling her she got the job as a firefighter. Then it dawned on her, she has cracked the formula and did the impossible, she became a firefighter and this exact same power helped her stand in front on stage and gave 2 TEDx talks. She calls it possibility hacking. Shortly after that she created the Yes Effect podcast where she interviews entrepreneurs, and people who just constantly said yes to their dreams and their lives and now helps other women empower themselves to live their dreams. She is actually featured on Chris Guillebeau's book – Born For This I really loved interviewing Shelli as she dropped amazing insights and hearing her journey, her challenges and struggles but the point of it all was that she overcame and beat the odds. Joseph Campbell called it The Call to Adventure. It’s that little voice in your head that whispers “why not you?” But after a brief moment of inspiration, you inner bullhorn rattles off every reason why not. Since you asked. Because you’re not good enough. Strong enough. Fit enough. Smart enough. You know the drill. But what if you did it anyway? And what if you did it and failed miserably? Would you give up, or would you pick yourself back up and try again? Shelli Varela chose the latter. In today’s episode of The Quote of the Day Show, Shelli shares her incredibly inspiring story of going from working in a nail shop to becoming a firefighter. The moral of the story … “There is a hero inside of every single one of you waiting for you to say YES." What’s calling you?
