Grave Talks CLASSIC EPISODE! Step back in time to 1902, an era of booming railroads and thriving copper mines, when Bisbee, Arizona's Copper Queen Hotel first swung open its ornate doors. Renowned for its modern conveniences and a guest list that would eventually include Hollywood icons like John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and even the great Harry Houdini, this grand establishment has never ceased operation since its debut. Yet the true headline-grabbers may be the spectral residents who have outstayed their welcome, from the alluring Julia Lowell to a mischievous young spirit named Billy, and a mysterious stranger best known as the Smoking Man. In 1902, the Copper Queen Hotel opened its doors in Bisbee, Arizona, and was heralded as the epitome of modern hospitality in the West. Erected during an era when Bisbee boasted its status as the largest urban center between St. Louis and San Francisco, the hotel not only mirrored the prosperity of the local mining industry but also underscored the dominance of railway transportation at the cusp of the twentieth century. Today, the Copper Queen Hotel stands as Arizona's oldest continuously operational hotel and has welcomed many notable figures within its walls. Its esteemed guests have been luminaries such as John Wayne, Marlon Brando, and Harry Houdini. Yet, these renowned names may not hold the most enduring legacy, as some visitors have lingered far beyond their intended stays. Among the spectral inhabitants are the ghosts of Julia Lowell, a young boy known as Billy and an enigmatic figure often referred to as the Smoking Man. SCARED TO DEATH IS EXPLICIT IN EVERY WAY. PLEASE TAKE CARE WHILE LISTENING. Dan's stories today are set in America and both in historically significant settings. Massachusetts' Longfellow's Wayside Inn and the ghost of a former employee - perhaps succubus of sorts that's been haunting the place for over a century-and-a-half is the show opener. Then we'll head south a bit to Maryland, and look into various claims of spirits that may haunt historic Fort McHenry the site of a battle that inspired the writing of America's Star Spangled Banner. Next up, Lynze has some wild, cool and interesting tales. first off, a tale of a funeral director and his encounter with the Smoking Man. Then, a super creepy run in with an old hag, trying to lure in young children. New Merch: Amazing new VHS lamps in the Bad Magic store this week. Check this out! Each handmade lamp features a real VHS tape that looks as if it was buried in the back yard. Evidence of something perhaps? The beginning of a new “found footage” horror movie? Or just the sickest horror-themed lamp ever created ? These are seriously so cool. Very very limited quantity of these - DEFINITELY a specialty item, they're handmade - so head on over quick to badmagicmerch.com if your interested and snag yours! What? Back-to-back Half Life? That's right Shipheads, we know what you like and this Halloween we decided you deserve a treat. Mike and Adam are joined by Mark Lentz, a video game developer who worked on the recent indie hit Cursed to Golf, to discuss the towering legacy of one of video games' most beloved sequels, Half Life 2. Will Mike finally finish mocking the Smoking Man? Will the boys forgive the sequel's profound refusal to clarify the story? Will we ever get tired of using the gravity gun? I mean…the answer to all these questions is no, but if you want to know the answer to the most important question of all, whether this game makes it to the celestial hard drive, you'll have to listen all the way to the end. After the climatic events of last years GateSlashers, we're back with another four spine chilling episodes about 4 horror properties you may want to check out. Dan calls upon Jake to investigate a mystery that they both thought had been buried in the finale of last year's events. Some things don't stay buried and they're going to need some classified government documents and a Chevy Impala to finally hunt down their greatest foe. I hope you're ready because GateSlashers II: I Want to Believe begins here... We're kicking this year off with one of the biggest horror television shows of all time, The X-Files. Join Dan Hernandez and Dan McMahon as they dig into the essential monster of the week show. You may know Dan as the co-writer of Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, The Addams Family 2, and the upcoming Hulu series Koala Man. But to us, he's just the newest GateCrasher in our first OnlyDans episode. The X-Files follows agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate the FBI's most paranormal and fringe cases known as the X-Files. The series redefined horror television as it became on of the biggest shows of all time. The show took off to become one of the 90's biggest properties with two spin-offs and two motion pictures in the span of it's 11 seasons. Dan H. teaches Dan about the community of the The X-Files who refer to themselves as X-Philes as Dan recalls. The two dig deep into some of the series' mysteries. Dan M. talks about his love for the Smoking Man and his whole aesthetic. Dan H. also recalls what the internet was like during the time of The X-Files television run and how the community was split about if Mulder and Scully should end up together. Dan M. feels like a baby when Dan has to explain the different forums he used in his youth to talk about the show. Episodes we covered... Season 1, Episode 1: Pilot Season 7, Episode 12: X-Cops Season 4, Episode 2:Home Season 3, Episode 4: Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose Season 1, Episode 13: Beyond the Sea
The Lone Gunmen, specifically Frohike, are in possession of what they believe is the backstory of The Smoking Man. But is all as it seems?
Oh, man, a lot happens in this season three finale. The Smoking Man is here. Aliens are here. Mulder's Mom is here. But is the episode actually good? We'll find out!
News and chat about society, with a soundboard and propaganda mixed in. On this episode, I was joined by third-time guest, my fiancee, Izzy (twitter: @badplantmom)! This is Season 5, at the show's brand new venue: the beautiful Lorena Bobbitt Theatre. It's the HD era! Some of the things covered include: - After the Silk Road shut down, the US seized $1 billion in Bitcoin, which has now grown to $3 billion - The US is now one of the biggest holders of Bitcoin, reflecting their invested interest in the currency - The proliferation of Bitcoin as a force in the world, including becoming currency in El Salvador - The supply chain shortages and what is causing it - The Suez Crisis, where the UK lost their status as a world superpower following an intervention against Egypt - Is Covid the US's Suez Crisis moment? And if not, does it feel like we are approaching one? - How small businesses are beginning to hoard stock due to shortages, and the domino effect of economic effects post-Covid - Black Friday, and how it is declining in popularity, and consumer shopping habits around the holidays have changed - How Amazon was the only major company to report gains on Cyber Monday, and how Amazon is our future distribution overlords - The major news surge about how much shoplifting there is in the US, and how it all started with one Target in San Francisco - How a random use of a shoplifting reporting app from SFPD for one month sparked a fear mongering news surge - The shifting to an automated but highly surveilled state with as few workers, and as much security, as possible - X-Files, and how a show of this format, and being so critical of the US government, would never exist again - X-File's villain, the Smoking Man, as a symbol of the Deep State, and the Conspiracy Graph that called the Deep State a far-gone anti-Semitic conspiracy theory - How American media is increasingly infused with military and intelligence propaganda, and the Smith-Mundt Act Reauthorization of 2012 All of that, and much much more, this is the Society Show! An amazing story from a listener has Jonny and Richard wondering what a sophisticated singer might have in her garage. Also in this episode, Monty Don's car theft gardening, a song that name checks The Smoking Man from The X-Files, the secrets of selling TV shows, an unexpectedly smutty classic car advert, awful scraping noises on the North Circular, and the things you find in a second hand car CD changer. Plus, unnoticed head scum, fake rabbit monorail, militant Ken Bruce, driving position madness, and what is algae? We finish off the three-parter! Scully and Mulder make a huge discovery. The Smoking Man doesn't make deals. And we find out the fate of Scully's sister.
Season three kicks off with finding out what happened to Mulder when The Smoking Man tried to burn him to death and things get really wild from there really fast. Justin discovers The Syndicate and gets hooked deeper into the conspiracy! It's a good thing Matt is his guide.
Scully returns! After a very brief absence...but, even though she had just popped her first baby out of the oven, Gillian Anderson was anxious to get back to work. Daniel and I discuss that, and we talk about this very good episode in general - one of the best mythology episodes, maybe THE best to date in how it displays rich character growth for Mulder and expands on his relationship with the Scully family. It also features great scenes with Skinner and The Smoking Man... If I have any quibbles, maybe we could dispense with the on-the-nose depictions of Scully fighting her way back from "The Other Side." But, apart from that, this is a solid episode. And, as ever, a great talk. Dig in. Cancerman Remembers the X-FilesRichard welcomes actor William B. Davis, who portrayed one of the most iconic villains in television history. Davis played chain-smoking Cigarette Man, also known as Cancer Man in the long running television series, The X-Files Davis' character was the arch nemesis of FBI agent Fox Mulder from 1993 to 2002. Although he utters only four audible words in the entire first season of the show, the Smoking Man eventually develops into the series' primary antagonist. In his early appearances, he is seen in the offices of Division Chief Scott Blevins and Assistant Director Walter Skinner, Mulder and his partner Dana Scully's supervisors. He works for a government conspiracy only known as the Syndicate, who are hiding the truth of alien existence and their plan to colonize Earth.
This week Host Dave Bledsoe wipes the Cheez Whiz off his chest, and talks about all the doings at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Along the way he courts the rage of the American Hacking Community and anyone who doesn't like the New England Patriots, two groups you REALLY don't want pissed off at you. We deep dive into the Conspiracies hatched by the diabolic mastermind of the of the DNC Debbie Wasserman Schultz who ranks next the Smoking Man as the most devious manipulator of Americans who ever lived. Except, you know, she really, really sucked at the secret part of secret conspiracies, Claude Rains has come back the dead to express his shock over the DNC's bias! We also talk about why Russian MIGHT want to see a certain someone in power, even though we don't wish anyone to infer we are even suggesting such a thing might be true. We can't afford the legal fees. Special shout outs to our favorite Watergate Burglar G. Gordon Liddy, Tom Brady and Leonard Rodriguez from Greendale. Promotional consideration for this week's show is by Vladimirs Cyber-Security, you have secret? Give to Vlad! We open with Chris D'elia's thoughts on Russian cheerfulness and close with Tears for Fears, because everybody DOES want to rule the world! Learn more about your ad choices. Today's Guest: John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ, Horror Films of the 1970s, Horror Films FAQ. Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ, by clicking on the video player above! Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of guys who didn’t make the cut as members of The Lone Gunmen… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! When my future wife and I started living together, the first appointment TV series in our lives was ABC’s daytime soap, “All My Children.” Her addiction, not mine, but it was silly fun. We always watched TV together after work – as we do even now -- and the next series I remember us committing to in the 1990s was Fox’s long-running bit of alien abduction weirdness, “The X-Files.” We watched every episode with bated breath, sometimes amused and awed, sometimes left scratching our heads in total confusion. JOHN KENNETH MUIR podcast excerpt: "Every week, 'The X-Files' brought up these mysteries. There was an episode about the Loch Ness Monster, many episodes about UFOs. They also talked about religion, about faith and, in general, what is belief. I think that really connected with people. The writing was extremely intelligent." You can LISTEN to this interview with writer and film critic JOHN KENNETH MUIR, author of THE X-FILES FAQ, by clicking the audio player above! But – and this is important – we were always eager for the next installment. We watched all nine seasons together, worrying about Mulder’s porn addiction, his sister Samantha’s abduction, Sculley’s pregnancy, and Smoking Man’s ever impending doom. We even watched the spinoff series “Millenium” and “The Lone Gunmen” and the first feature film, Fight the Future. (We never did get around to the second, I Want to Believe.) Oh, and we followed Fox Mulder – I mean actor David Duchovny – through his uncomfortably pornographic Showtime series “Californication,” wondering when Dana Sculley – I mean actress Gillian Anderson – would star in the ultimate seductive story arc. JOHN KENNETH MUIR podcast excerpt: "Chris Carter's work ('The X-Files,' 'Millennium,' 'The Lone Gunmen,' 'Harsh Realm,' 'The After') leads itself to participation by creative people. They take his work and they create art from his art." And now “The X-Files” is returning to the small screen for a 2016 limited series that creator Chris Carter promises will give fans everything we loved about the original and more. Who better than to prepare us for the show’s return than John Kenneth Muir, author of The X-Files FAQ: All That’s Left to Know About Global Conspiracy, Aliens, Lazurus Species, and Monsters of the Week. Key interview moments: • 4:10 The appeal of "The X-Files" is no mystery at all, according to FAQ author John Kenneth Muir; • 18:30 If you really think about it, Muir says, "X-Files" creator Chris Carter's work is art; • 39:05 On a completely different subject, Muir explains why his massive collection of sci-fi, fantasy and genre toys are available for his little boy to play with to his heart's content, rather than keeping them boxed up.
