In Mali, where Fatoumata Diawara was raised, it is common for women to sing, but much rarer for women to play an instrument. As a result, Fatoumata—who is one of the first, if not the first woman guitarist in all of Mali—has developed a self-taught, intuitive guitar playing style that is entirely her own. “This way of playing, it's me,” says Fatoumata. “It represents my fight as a musician, as an African, and as a lady on stage.” In this episode of Object of Sound, Fatoumata talks to Hanif about how she discovered her calling as a musician, and the exciting ways that she is fusing the traditional music of her homeland with Western influences on her third studio album, out next year. Directed by Martin Scorsese, The Last Waltz is a 1978 concert film documenting the final performance of The Band. To Hanif, the movie is not just a collection of great performances, but a study in exquisite tenderness, and how to say goodbye. “While I'm alive, I'll make tiny changes to Earth.” Written by Scott Hutchison, the late frontman of the band Frightened Rabbit, this line has provided comfort, consolation, and inspiration to those who loved Scott's music. A talented and witty lyricist, Scott's songs could be devastatingly crushing or funny, visceral or resonant—sometimes all in the same track. But an artist is more than the work they produce, and so, on this episode of Object of Sound, we're celebrating not only Scott's music, but also his life and legacy. We speak to Ben Gibbard, Frank Turner, Georgia Maq, and more, who share memories and impressions of the way Scott and his music shaped their lives. In this episode, we speak to Brian Gallagher, who shared his insight as the Chief of Sales at Australian Media Owner SCA on the changing media landscape and how the pandemic has helped shine a light on localism. SME businesses were the first to feel the pain of the Covid-19 outbreak in Australia. SCA quickly mobilised a 'Shop Local' campaign on a national basis, with localised campaigns running on social radio shows, where local people could call in and talk up their favourite local businesses. "...because of the very highly social nature of radio, we were also able to use our morning shows, our drive time shows, and our daytime shows to get consumers to call in and tell stories about great local vendors, what they were doing, and how they'd helped them." Brian also spoke on the attractiveness and dominance of the big giants Google and Facebook for SME advertisers and why SCA brought in more digital marketing experts to help their customers understand the importance of advertising outside the giants with a blend of mediums to achieve their goals. "Facebook can operate at any budgetary level. They operate in a dashboarded scenario... It's a slot machine for marketing; depending on how sophisticated a client you are, you can very quickly put a lot of coins in the slot. Cost per acquisition seems to rise inexorably. We feel very strongly that those platforms, while appearing convenient or cost-effective, there's a hidden cost there, and our small to medium advertisers, in the main, don't see how that works. We are fiercely local about our content and our connection with our communities, but we've implemented more and more executives who are experts in digital marketing in these communities so that they can take hold of those advertisers and say, "Yes, you should be in search. "Yes, you should be in social, "but you should be deploying in this manner."  ABOUT BRIAN GALLAGHER Brian has over 30 years' experience in the broadcast and digital media industries, from advertising sales to developing video content production business's. He has focused his career on the successful intersection of content and brand storytelling. Brian has led the successful development of brand integration strategy and workflow for broadcasters and production companies which led to him to build a successful brand funded television programming business. Brian has developed several business's from start-up stage to commercial success. Elia Einhorn is a host at Sonos Radio and Pitchfork Radio and editor of the new zine, Sober 21 To offer your own advice, call Zak @ 844-935-BEST TRANSCRIPT: ZAK: Quick warning. Today's episode contains a hardy amount of swearing. ELIA: Hey, I'm Elia Einhorn. I wear a lot of hats. I host Sonos Radio, Pitchfork Radio. I hosted the Talkhouse podcast for years. My newest project is Sober 21. It's a compendium that just came out via the Creative Independent as a beautiful zine and online for free and it's these 21 sober musicians sharing crucial tips and hints and advice for musicians who are thinking about getting sober. Maybe sober curious or are newly sober and are afraid that their career is over. We put it together to say it is no. Shit is about to get way the fuck better! ZAK: A lot of us are getting back out into the world and it feels really good. And for the sober among us, Elia has some advice about making that transition smooth and healthy. ELIA: My advice is this. Don't walk around a bar with a pint glass full of Diet Coke. Get your drink in a rocks glass. Get whatever you're having. A Diet Coke. For me, it's a cranberry and soda with lime but get it in a rocks glass. And there's a wonderful piece in Sober 21 about this by Jen Champion and she titled it, Soda Water with a Lime But Will You Put it in a Rocks Glass" and it's something that in sober communities of people who are out at shows, are out at clubs, are playing concerts, we just know this. It's just this implicit experience. Put it in a rocks glass then you don't have some asshole asking you why are you not drinking. But really, why aren't you really drinking! Come on, man. What's the deal? You know that drunk person who's pushing too far. You can do it at parties too. I find you're either at somebody's house where they're putting out glasses if they're feeling a little fancier. Or, there's like a red plastic cup essentially or the equivalent. The Solo cup. Don't drink out of your can of Diet Coke. Don't drink out of your can of Diet Coke. Don't drink out of your gatorade. Put your Gatorade in the plastic cup and drink out of that and you'll almost definitely not have to answer the question all night. And also, a little bit of an addendum; refresh your drink yourself. Cause people are so thoughtful, if they see your drink's getting low they'll grab one for you. Get ahead of that. Refresh it yourself and always have enough in there that you're like, oh, I'm good. Thanks. It's amazing how much of the 3rd degree that totally gets ahead of. I am staunchly pro people drinking when they can drink safely. It's an awesome thing. And I want to say that because I feel like people have this idea that people who are sober are like, oh man. Fuck these guys that are drinking. Absolutely not. It's awesome. If I could drink normally I'd drink all the time which is how I know I'm an alcoholic. And I say that because what I'm about to say next is it's usually the person who's a little but too drunk who doesn't understand the social cues around this. It's like, why aren't you having a real drink? Cait O'Riordan from The Pogues talks about this in Sober 21. Why aren't you having a proper drink cause she lives in Dublin so she deals with this shit all the fucking time. It's just not worth having that conversation with everyone you happen to come across. A lot of people got sober during the pandemic. AA meetings are flooded with new people. A lot of people hit their low, hit their bottom during the pandemic and found help, thankfully and now they're re-emerging and doing things in a whole new way. Getting sober is not supposed to be about being boring and sitting around the house watching Netflix. You're supposed to be out in the mix living your life to the fullest, I'd say. You almost didn't get to have a life. Now you to have it. Fucking live it.

“How does the South inform my music? How do I describe the sound that your bare feet make when they pat the cool, packed red dust under them?” In her music and her writing, Brittany Howard has tapped something elusive: the feeling of the south. It's contradictions, it's pain, and its beauty. In this episode, Adia sits down with rock legend and longtime lead singer of the Alabama Shakes Brittany Howard to talk about getting down to the feelings below her lyrics, being unapologetic about where you come from, and who you are. Brittany asked Adia to make a playlist for this episode with her mom, Miss Jackie, so that's exactly what we did. This is Unsung, our podcast with Sonos Radio where the world's greatest artists reveal their heroes who never caught the spotlight. To round off the series, we're touching base with a true musical innovator. Dizzee Rascal is one of the most influential British artists of the 21st century. Born and raised in East London, his musical journey started aged 14, rapping over jungle and drum ‘n' bass on London's pirate stations. In 2003, Dizzee released his debut album, 'Boy In Da Corner'. Capturing the tension and isolation of inner-city life through lucid lyrical storytelling and a groundbreaking production style now known globally as grime.Dizzee's Unsung choice is Memphis rapper Project Pat. First making waves through collaborations with Three Mix Mafia, the hugely influential rap trio founded by his brother Juicy J, Pat's distinctive flow, playfully irreverent lyrics and his taste for minimal, lo-fi beats gained him cult status and helped anoint the South and the new capital of US rap. It's also a sound which, in the 90s, captured the attention of a young Dizzee Rascal, then a schoolboy in Tower Hamlets.Dizzee talks to journalist and documentary maker Kieran Yates about discovering Pat, his affinity with Southern hip-hop which led to a 2007 collaboration with Pimp C and Bun B of UGK and what it means for music to be a product of its environment. The series is produced by Eliza Lomas and mixed by Becky Street. The series leads are Duncan Harrison and Luke Sutton.Project Pat: If You Ain't from My Hood (feat. This is Unsung a Crack Magazine podcast with Sonos Radio where the world's greatest artists reveal their heroes who never caught the spotlight. Today, we are in conversation with a bonafide pop music legend. Dr. Susan Rogers is one of the world's greatest sound engineers and record producers – and one of the tiny number of women in the profession. If you've ever had a dancefloor moment to 'When Doves Cry' or 'Raspberry Beret' by Prince, you can thank Susan. The technical force behind albums like Purple Rain, Sign o' the Times and Around the World in a Day, she was with Prince through the sleepless nights and notorious 24-hour recording sessions of his commercial peak, from 1983 to 1987. In 1988, she left to produce other artists, resulting in some of the biggest hits of the 90s. She then took her earnings and went back to school, finally graduating from high school aged 44 and then obtaining a PhD in music and psychology. Susan's Unsung choice is a band she produced, who she felt never reached the heights they deserved: Geggy Tah. A jazz, folk, alt and experimental indie duo comprised of Tommy Jordon and Greg Kurstin, together they released three albums over seven years on David Byrne's label Luaka Bop – the first two produced by Susan.
