In our second post-“Liberation Day” episode we are joined by John Goyer, Executive Director for Southeast Asia for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, to discuss the impact of America's now-suspended tariff increases on Southeast Asian countries and on the U.S.John observes that American consumers are likely to experience significant price increases if these tariffs go into effect, since the reason U.S. businesses import from Southeast Asia is because it can get goods less expensively than if they are made in the United States. Meanwhile, both stock and bond markets have reacted very dramatically to each new announcement, and some economists are warning that the U.S. could tip into a recession if they go into full effect.Southeast Asian countries are already navigating a complicated relationship with China, whose economy has been relying on exports. Beijing's fraught trade relationship with the U.S. has left it with huge surpluses of goods, many of which have been dumped into neighboring countries. China has also been using Southeast Asia as a place to trans-ship goods to avoid U.S. tariffs.Vietnam, whose tariffs were announced at the rate of 46 percent, actually has fairly low tariffs on U.S. goods, so will need to find other ways to satisfy the Trump Administration. This may include reducing restrictive policies and regulations or purchasing more U.S. goods. While some Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries have suggested a unified response, ASEAN has not been effective in moving quickly as a bloc. As a result, each country is likely to seek its own deal.On the question of who the winners might be in a trade war, John observes that it's not easy to move manufacturing. These are complex, expensive decisions, and companies will be deliberate and measured in their responses. China will work together with the member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to combat online gambling and telecom fraud, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Thursday, during a meeting in Beijing with diplomatic envoys from the 10 ASEAN countries.A series of severe cases of online gambling and telecom fraud at the Myanmar-Thailand border have posed threats to and harmed the interests of citizens from China and other countries, which requires high attention, Wang said.He called on relevant countries to shoulder responsibility and adopt effective measures to ensure the safety of people's lives and property, and never allow criminals to go unpunished.China is willing to strengthen bilateral and multilateral law enforcement and security cooperation with ASEAN nations to provide a safe environment for people-to-people exchanges and maintain the sound order of regional interactions and cooperation, he added.Earlier, in a statement issued on Wednesday night, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said it is making all-out efforts to rescue Chinese citizens who went missing or were trapped after being deceived into traveling abroad. It pledged to strengthen international law enforcement cooperation to dismantle telecom fraud networks, particularly in Myawaddy, Myanmar. The ministry said it attaches great importance to the frequent occurrence of such cases recently and to the calls for help posted on social media and other channels by family members of the victims. The statement said the ministry has asked police across the country to comprehensively analyze and investigate the cases, and it is working to rescue the victims with the assistance of foreign affairs departments and Chinese embassies and consulates overseas. In July 2023, the ministry launched a special campaign during which the Chinese police and Myanmar's law enforcement departments worked together to crack down on telecom fraud dens in northern Myanmar that target Chinese nationals. The campaign led to the capture of more than 53,000 Chinese citizens suspected of being involved in various scams and wiped out all major telecom fraud dens located near China's border with northern Myanmar. It also forced a large number of criminals to relocate to other regions in Myanmar such as Myawaddy, Wan Hai and Tangyan. Some fraud dens are facing a "shortage of labor" due to the stringent crackdowns and mass awareness efforts, the ministry said, adding that these dens have started luring Chinese citizens with the promise of "free travel abroad" and "high-paying jobs".Those who fall for these false promises are abducted or held captive and forced to participate in illegal activities, it said. The ministry warned Chinese citizens of such fraudulent schemes and advised them to remain extra vigilant when receiving offers for high-paying jobs or business exchanges overseas and free visits for tourism. It also advised the public to immediately call the police and contact China's diplomatic missions if a family member goes missing overseas, saying the police will act without delay upon receiving such a report. The ministry's statement came amid public discussions on a recent human trafficking incident involving Chinese actor Wang Xing. He was rescued by Thai police on Jan 7 and returned to China on Jan 11, according to reports.
It's Thursday, November 7th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus 7 of 11 Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians International Christian Concern reports seven out of eleven Southeast Asian nations persecute Christians. Those nations are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. In Brunei and Cambodia, officials prohibit Christians from sharing their faith. Burma's military often targets Christians with violence. Believers face blasphemy charges in Malaysia and Indonesia for criticizing Islam. And authorities in Laos and Vietnam try to force Christians to renounce their faith. There are also at least 45 Christians who are missing, detained, or imprisoned across Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” Donald Trump wins in a landslide Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election in a landslide as results from the polls came in yesterday. Trump secured 292 electoral votes as of Wednesday, according to the Associated Press. This surpasses the 270 electoral votes necessary to win. Trump also secured the popular vote with over 72 million votes. Trump won the swing states of Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The Associated Press had not called Arizona or Nevada as of yesterday, but Trump was leading in both states. Trump addressed supporters following the victory, acknowledging God's protection on his life. TRUMP: “Many people have told me that God spared my life for a reason. (cheers) And that reason was to save our country and to restore America to greatness. Now, we are going to fulfill that mission together. We're going to fulfill that mission.” Proverbs 21:1 reminds us, “The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.” Christians break out in worship after Trump victory speech Remarkably, right after Trump's victory speech, the crowd at the watch party at the Palm Beach Florida Convention Center burst out in spontaneous worship, singing “How Great Thou Art.” The video was captured on the phone of former New York State Rep. Ben Geller. Listen. CROWD: “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds Thy hands have made. I see the stars. I hear the roaring thunder, Thy power throughout the universe displayed. “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art. Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee. How great Thou art. How great Thou art.” (cheers) Kamala Harris' belated concession speech champions abortion After refusing to congratulate Trump on Election Night, after he had won the 270 electoral votes necessary, Kamala Harris delivered a concession speech at 4:00pm Eastern on November 6th at Howard University, her alma mater. HARRIS: “Earlier today, I spoke with President-elect Trump and congratulated him on his victory. (boos) I also told him that we will help him and his team with their transition and that we will engage in a peaceful transfer of power.” (cheers) She appeared to imply that she hopes to run for president again. HARRIS: “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.” (cheers) And, not surprisingly, she exhibited her greatest passion when she championed baby-killing in the womb. HARRIS: “I will never give up the fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations, where the women of America have the freedom to make decisions about their own body and not have their government telling them what to do.” (cheers) Republicans won control of the U.S. Senate Republicans also won control of the U.S. Senate following Tuesday's election. They now have 52 seats in the Senate, surpassing the necessary 50 seats for a majority. The GOP flipped seats in Montana, Ohio, and West Virginia where Tim Sheehy, Bernie Moreno, and Jim Justice were victorious respectively. Neither party has won control of the House of Representatives with 44 more races yet to be called as of Wednesday. Republicans had 202 seats and Democrats had 189 seats. A party needs at least 218 seats for a majority. 3 pro-abortion amendments failed, 7 passed Voters across 10 states also decided on abortion ballot initiatives on Tuesday. Pro-abortion constitutional amendments failed in Florida, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Tragically, similar pro-abortion amendments passed in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Missouri, New York, Montana, and Nevada. Stock market and Crytpo up after Trump's victory The stock market reacted positively to the news of Donald Trump becoming the 47th president of the United States. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 3.6%. The S&P 500 rose 2.5%, and the Nasdaq composite jumped 3%. Crypto also surged with Bitcoin reaching an all-time high of over $76,000. Boeing no longer bowing to sexual perversion Wokeness Bloomberg reports that Boeing is the latest high-profile corporation to end its diversity, equity, and inclusion department. The airplane manufacturer will instead focus on talent and employee experience. The change comes under Boeing's new Chief Executive Officer Kelly Ortberg who is cutting about 10% of the company's workforce. The change also comes as many U.S. companies face pressure from conservative activists to cut their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Billy Graham's birthday And finally, today is the anniversary of Billy Graham's birthday. He was born on November 7, 1918 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Graham was ordained as a Southern Baptist minister, becoming one of the greatest modern evangelists. He preached to almost a quarter billion people in person. His messages also reached millions more through radio, TV, and film. Listen to this excerpt of one of his sermons. GRAHAM: “David, the man after God's own heart, also became guilty of sin. He became guilty of adultery and guilty of murder, and he suffered for it the rest of his life. God forgave him, but the scars remained. “And many of you are trying to flee from God tonight. You know that you need a personal relationship with Christ. You're not sure that your sins are forgiven. You're not sure that if you died you'd go to Heaven. If you have a doubt about it, you ought to settle it this very night. You're fleeing from God.” Graham's Gospel crusades took him all over the world even behind the Iron Curtain and into China and North Korea. The 44th ASEAN (short for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) summit is underway, so we thought it would be a great time to do a deep dive on ASEAN, especially since Malaysia is set to take the Chairmanship next year. The idea for this conversation came from one of our listeners, Aaron Iskandar, who wanted to know more about ASEAN's role in promoting economic and security cooperation among its members. Beijing hopes that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's visit to China will help effectively manage differences between the two countries, strengthen dialogue and advance mutually beneficial cooperation, said an official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs. While briefing the media on Blinken's three-day visit, which will start on Wednesday, the official, who declined to be named, said that Beijing urges Washington to turn the commitments made by United States President Joe Biden into concrete actions.During a telephone conversation with President Xi Jinping on April 2, Biden reiterated that the US does not seek a new Cold War, and that its objective is not to change China's system, its alliances do not target China, the US does not support "Taiwan independence", and it does not seek conflict with China. The US also doesn't want to curtail China's development and doesn't seek "decoupling" from China, he added.Noting that China's door for dialogue and communication has always been open, the official said the US must be aware that communication should not be conducted for its own sake, and that Washington should not always say one thing but do another. The US should also abandon the illusion of dealing with China from a position of strength, the official added. There were, are and will be differences between China and the US, but these differences should not dominate the bilateral relationship, the official said. The official urged the US not to cross China's red lines on the Taiwan question or on issues related to human rights, the political system and development rights. While calling China's determination and will to safeguard national sovereignty, security and development interests unwavering, the official said the Chinese side will use Blinken's visit to firmly articulate its position and make clear demands to the US on the Taiwan question and the issues of economy and trade, technology and the South China Sea."We firmly oppose the politicization of economic, trade and technological issues by the US. We also warn the US that suppressing Chinese technology is tantamount to restraining China's high-quality development and depriving the Chinese people of their legitimate right to development. China will resolutely respond to this," the official said. The official also voiced China's firm opposition to US intervention on the South China Sea issue and sowing discord between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The US is not a party to the South China Sea issue and should not intervene, let alone disrupt the situation, the official said.Regarding the ongoing Palestine-Israel conflict, the official urged the US to fulfill its international responsibilities, support United Nations Security Council Resolution 2728, and work toward achieving an immediate and full cease-fire in the Gaza Strip to rescue the Palestinian people from the dire situation, the official said.Regarding the Ukraine crisis, the official said the US needs to refrain from adding fuel to the fire or seeking to benefit from the situation, refrain from attacking and smearing the normal state-to-state relations between China and Russia, and avoid stirring up bloc confrontation, the official added. The official also expressed concerns about US deployment of intermediate-range missile launch systems in the Philippines, saying that the move has heightened regional tension and increased the risk of misunderstanding and misjudgment.
An influx of Chinese travelers in the past few months has enabled Southeast Asia's tourism industry to recover from the pandemic-induced slump, analysts say. While China has long been one of the key travel markets for members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, decisions made by Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand last year to waive entry requirements for Chinese tourists bolstered tourism receipts in the first two months of this year. Visa-free access for Chinese tourists is a "facilitating factor" in boosting ASEAN tourism industry receipts, said John Paolo Rivera, associate director of the Dr Andrew L. Tan Center for Tourism at the Asian Institute of Management in the Philippines. Chinese tourists are the biggest spenders among travelers in Southeast Asia, Rivera said. Alongside the volume of Chinese tourists, the Chinese spending habit has driven consumption spending and the tourism contribution to GDP" in Southeast Asia, he said, noting tourist spending has helped the ASEAN travel industry to recover from losses posted during the pandemic. Chinese tourists' spending has perhaps created the biggest influence on Singapore. Official figures showed international visitor arrivals in the city-state reached 13.6 million last year, with China among the top three source markets. Tourism receipts reached $15 billion in the first nine months last year, and Chinese tourists were the biggest spenders with their total receipts hitting more than $1.7 billion, the Singapore Tourism Board said. The board expects the tourism sector's recovery to continue this year through improved global flight connectivity and the implementation of the mutual 30-day visa-free travel between China and Singapore that started on Feb 9. Yu Hong, a senior research fellow at the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore, said the mutual visa-free agreement has boosted the number of Chinese visitors to Singapore, especially during Spring Festival. Singapore has always been a popular destination among Chinese tourists because of its geographical proximity, cultural similarities and the presence of many direct flights to and from Chinese cities, Yu said. In Malaysia, officials welcomed passengers aboard China Eastern Airlines' inaugural flight on March 16 from Kunming in Yunnan province to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur. Manoharan Periasamy, director-general of the Malaysian Tourism Promotion Board, said in a statement that this new route provides a "great opportunity" to bring in more Chinese tourists, especially after the visa-free policy took effect on Dec 1. This year, Malaysia is eyeing 27.3 million international tourist arrivals, with 5 million expected to come from China. Meanwhile, 3.96 million foreign tourists arrived in Thailand from Jan 1 to Feb 8, with those from China topping the list with 730,747 visitors, Thai government spokesman Chai Wacharonke was quoted in media reports as saying. On March 1, the number of Chinese tourists to Thailand was up more than 30 percent compared with the corresponding period a year earlier, according to the online travel agency Trip.com, Xinhua News Agency reported. 30%。Qin Jing, vice-president of Trip.com Group, said the implementation of mutual visa exemption in March holds significantly positive implications for the growth of tourism in both countries. visa-free travel免签旅游take effect生效
Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was called on during a key regional summit on March 5 to defend an exclusive deal his city-state struck with Taylor Swift that prevents the pop star from taking her current The Eras Tour anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Swift performed six concerts from March 2 to 9 in Singapore under an exclusive deal that has been criticized by some Southeast Asian neighbors who complain they have been deprived of the tourist boom that her concerts have brought elsewhere. In a sign of the international phenomenon that Swift has become, the veteran Singaporean statesman was asked by a journalist to confirm the deal and to comment on whether it undermined the spirit of cooperation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, a 10-nation bloc known by the acronym ASEAN of which Singapore is a key member. Lee confirmed that Swift was provided with “certain incentives” from a government fund established to rebuild the tourism industry after COVID-19 disruptions to make Singapore her only Southeast Asian destination. He did not say how much the deal cost. “It has turned out to be a very successful arrangement. I don't see that as being unfriendly,” Lee said. Lee suggested that if Singapore hadn't struck an exclusive deal, a neighboring country might have done so. “Sometimes one country makes a deal, sometimes another country does. I don't explicitly say ‘you will come here only on condition that you'll not go to other places,'” Lee said. Swift's representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “If that's what's needed to be done to get an outcome which is mutually beneficial and which, from Singapore's point of view, serves not just to grow the economy but also to bring in visitors and goodwill from all over the region, I don't see why not,” Lee said. “If we had not made such an arrangement, would she have come to someplace else in Southeast Asia or more places in Southeast Asia? Maybe, maybe not. These are things that she will decide,” Lee added. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Singapore added to its official gold reserve pile last month, Feb 2023, adding +51 metric tonnes of official gold bullion since the start of last year, 2022. For the most part record sized government central bank gold bullion buying is being driven by emerging and developing economies. Let yourself look in this embedded SD Bullion Bullion Market Update back to the last major secular bear market in bonds. Back in early 1980, the gold-silver bullion bull market mania price tops. Understand how far adrift world central banks still are regarding their current gold bullion allocations. Many of the purple-colored emerging and developing economies here made other major financial news headlines this week. As many are increasingly dedollarizing or taking fiat Federal Reserve notes and or offshore fiat eurodollars (or fiat US dollar circulating offshore) from being intermediaries in their bilateral trade settlements. Here are but a few examples. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with the acronym ASEAN, is a combined +678 million people in some of the fastest-growing economies globally. They are now considering dropping the fiat US dollar, fiat euro, fiat yen, and pound as intermediaries in bilateral trade payment settlements. Together they represent nearly 1/10th of World's GDP. Remember how on this very channel, I have shown you clips of how the BIS is actively assisting countries like Malaysia and Singapore. In a new emerging fiat financial order, to eventually settle their own trade directly with one another using the emerging wholesale CBDC payment settlement platforms. Well, what do you think countries like Singapore and Malaysia are doing? Is it not becoming more obvious by the week? Even our supposed European allies are now trading and settling in our supposed rival's fiat currency units in order to acquire critical commodities like liquid natural gas.
