This health-related podcast, like my earlier one on cancer with Dr Teo Soo Hwang (see link below) is also a personal one, as I have lost a number of friends and close acquaintances to heart disease in recent months.  In some cases, the deaths were shocking, since they happened to seemingly healthy, fit and well-adjusted people. Not at all – at least superficially – that fell within the definition of ‘high-risk'. I resolved to attempt to better understand the Whys and Wherefores of heart disease, which meant there was only one person I could speak with: Dr. Suren Thuraisingham, an old family friend from back home in Penang.  Dr. Thuraisingham is a very experienced and highly respected cardiologist, having practised medicine in this field since 1990. He very kindly agreed to answer my questions about why even young and seemingly healthy people are dropping dead from heart attacks, among a whole host of related issues, including whether a link exists between Covid vaccinations and heart diseases.  (Dr. Thuraisingham is a Consultant Cardiologist at CVSKL (Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur), an integrated cardiac and vascular hospital in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Shireen Muhiudeen, Founder and Principal Corston-Smith-Asset Management - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Shireen Muhiudeen is an extraordinary individual. She was the first female chair of the Malaysian Stock Exchange and the former CEO of AIG Investment Corporation (Malaysia). She is an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) trailblazer, encouraging organizations to become ESG-sustainable, either as investors or as board members.  Shireen's book, We Are All Stakeholders, was named by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the top books to read for entrepreneurs who want to break the mold.  We sat down with Shireen and here are highlights of what we discussed. - Why companies can be even more profitable and sustainable with proper governance structures and systems. - That a focus on environment, social and governance (ESG) does not require consultants or increased overhead, it just requires the right vision.  - Founders and leaders must set the tone from the top.  - Founders must also be aware of outside investors who come in with their own views about a company. If a founder's vision is not strong, the investor's ethos will take over.  - That women on boards can elevate the business outcomes because diverse views will overcome groupthink and groupthink destroys businesses.  - Business leaders must be aware of the rising concerns on sourcing and traceability of resources for products from certain parts of the world due to sanctions and problematic labor practices in the supply chain.    Shireen Muhiudeen is the Founder and Principal of Corston-Smith-Asset Management. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Shireen guides companies seeking to expand and raise capital in the Asia-Pacific region. She has served on investment, nomination and governance, compensation, risk, and ESG committees within banking, port, plantation, property, and media companies.    https://www.weareallstakeholders.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/shireen-muhiudeen/ Learn more about your ad choices. Bernard Hor is an entrepreneur, storyteller, strategist, triathlete, and co-founder of Hatio Group, a digital supply chain platform servicing Asian SMEs. Hatio helps SMEs serve the world's fastest-growing consumer market – Asia – predicted to reach $30 trillion in value by 2030, with better supply chain and logistics solutions. Based in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.  As the group CEO, Bernard plays an instrumental role in expanding the Hatio brand across Southeast Asia with a mission to help local SMEs digitise. With an excellent understanding of supply chain best practices, Bernard and his team helped clients make change happen sustainably and have delivered significant operational improvements.  He currently leads a strong team of software engineers, project managers, and designers on large-scale digital transformation projects in the telecommunications, healthcare, supply chain & logistics industry.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Over time, the supply chain has evolved. In 2022, supply chain digitization is no longer optional, especially thinking about the pandemic. With supply chain digitization, you can reach your warehouse, inventory, orders, and e-commerce ecosystem in one platform. It gives you full visibility and transparency. BEST MOMENTS “When looking at Southeast Asia as a region, of course, it is an exciting and very fast-growing market. You have a very young generation market going to come up in the next 10 to 15 years and these are the guys that will drive the economy and entire digital trades.” “If you look at it, for Malaysia, considering whatever political or history we have, I think we have stability. We are economically very stable, politically stable, and also what is really unique is that Malaysia is like a melting pot of cultures and raises. So, it is really easy to connect with people in Malaysia.” “The level of disruption in the global supply chain right now only tells us one thing which is there is an urgent need to be able to respond to the situation in real-time. How can this be done? This can only be done if the supply chain is visible and transparent. The digitization of supply chain is not an option anymore.” “Lockdown forced us to think really hard. Not only do we digitalize all of our internal operations and the way we communicate onboard or with clients. We could do remote employment today in any country, but it forces us to think that we need how this platform technology grows.” “What we did was we unify the core components of the supply chain. The warehouse, the inventory, the orders, and the e-commerce ecosystem. So, imagine these four key components and we unified them into one technology on a platform as a service and we called it cloud supply chain. This gives full visibility to any retailers and brand owners out there.” ABOUT THE HOST Levent Yildizgoren, the author of 'Good Business in any Language', is an award-winning entrepreneur, localisation professional, and a PRINCE2 qualified project manager. Hello to you listening in Athens, Greece!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey. The other day I was talking with my friend and coaching colleague Jeffrey Tan in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He's my December 2021 guest on Stories From (mostly) Women Who Walk.I mentioned a project I have on Whidbey that feels daunting to me. Jeffrey suggested acclimating like he acclimated to thinner air when trekking the high altitude mountains on the Annapurna Circuit within central Nepal. [To acclimate (or acclimatize) means that one adjusts physiologically or behaviorally to a change in environment in order to remain well and healthy in the new conditions.]As he and his group reached higher elevations the sherpas led them a short distance farther to stop, rest, breathe, and then return to camp. This up-and-back routine was repeated over a few days until the hikers adjusted to the decreased oxygen levels.Practical Tip: When you feel daunted, anxious, maybe even short of breath contemplating the project ahead of you, take time to acclimate. Slow down, approach your project with small steps, take breaks when necessary. You will find you have what it takes to go the distance. Guaranteed! 60 Seconds is your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that. This is the place to thrive together. Hello to you listening in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday with questions carefully chosen to help you collect stories in the oral tradition or spark your own writing. Either way, you'll say, "Thanks for the memories." “Is it hubris to believe we all live epics?” [Peace Like a River by Leif Enger]An epic is a large body of work made up of smaller stories featuring deeds and adventures by a courageously heroic figure in an action-packed setting with some magical forces thrown in.My dad was a child of the Great Depression, joined the US Navy to fight in World War II when he was underage, came home, put himself through school on the GI Bill, married, raised a large family, lost his beloved wife to cancer far too early, battled cancer himself, and walked into very late age with two really really bad knees. What makes this epic? Dad showed his children how to live to a good death. Dad was in a nursing home for 9 months before he died short of his 92nd birthday. No more walking outside, no more Mass at his church, no more singing in the choir, no more freedom or independence.  And yet there was a grace, a resilience, dignity, even humor about the change in his circumstances that went with him to the very end. That was epic.  Story Prompt: How are you living an epic? Write that story!Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. This is the place to thrive together. Come for the stories - stay for the magic. Yuri had a successful career in a large Oil and Gas company that he gave up following a profound dream with a black panther, a story he recounts in this interview. By following his dream, literally, Yuri has been led to a life in which he considers himself truly free. Yuri now teaches people lucid dreaming and astral projection under the banner of Lucidity 4 All. In this interview Yuri shares a bit about his main teacher the Russian OBE researcher Michael Raduga. We discuss how Yuri understands these experiences, which he calls “shifting”, the importance of memory to take full advantage of our night time experiences, healing through dreams, his understanding of the subconscious and unconscious and their role to lucid dreaming and how he works with people that he coaches. We conducted this interview while live streaming on Facebook which means we occasionally speak to questions people had asked in comments and touch on a range of practical issues about dream practice. Unfortunately the novelty of organizing the Facebook live also meant I missed recording the very beginning of the interview, but I promise that all the good parts are including in this recording. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-Breakfast Stop And Largest KL Wet Market-Pudu I always have a great time in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! First the food is amazing! Easily one of my favorite food cities in Asia, then the wonderful hospitable people, finally the exciting cultural mix! And that's just the start! In this episode I share with you one of my favorite pastimes in KL. Visiting restorans, the cheap cafes that are found everywhere around the city. I absolutely don't feel like I've arrived in KL until I have an order of roti canai, the flaky bread that's dunked in dhal, or other types of curries. For breakfast, absolutely! A masala dosa is another dish I have a hard time resisting for breakfast. Spicy potatoes, with some onion wrapped in a crepe made from rice and lentils soaked in water. Wash it down with a teh terek, pulled tea, and you've got the quintessential restoran stop as far as I'm concerned. The Pudu Wet Market is the largest one of it's kind in KL. If you're a cook, or just into food, you must visit this market. As Anthony Bourdain used to say, if you want to get to know a culture visit their markets. This one is indeed impressive, with everything from pet dogs, to live chickens, an amazing variety of seafood and truly some of the friendliest people on the planet. Some pretty crazy stuff too, I didn't film the guy firing his cap gun every few seconds to get people to notice the smartphone accessories he was selling. Thanks again to all of the wonderful people who were so kind to show me their goods and exchange some smiles!

Kuala Lumpur easily is one of my favorite food cities. The cultural mix of Chinese, Malay, and Indian cuisines as well as the various dishes that are a result of this meltling pot of cultures makes KL a must do destination for food lovers. In this episode I highlight some of the best places to go to sample food, whether it's Indian in KL Sentral/Brickfields/Little India, Malay/Chinese in Kampung Baru or seafood and bbq on the Jalan Alor. I mention too that KL has some of the best food value especially for a major city in Southeast Asia. The little restorans that appear everywhere in the city are great places to stop for a quick snack of roti canai, or a masala dosa and a teh terek, (pulled milk tea), typically a drink and a snack is less than $2! I agree that Saigon and Bangkok offer some of the best food on the planet but don't overlook Kuala Lumpur if you're a serious food lover!Help support the podcast by becoming a patron! Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-Best Visitor Guide To The KL Monorail/LRT/MRT/Batu Caves I've put together a basic simple guide to what most visitors need to know to get around on KL's LRT/Monorail and trains. At first glance the lines can look a little on the complicated side but provided you're staying in a typical tourist center, like KL Sentral, Bukit Bintang, or around KLCC this guide should provide you with all you need to know. The KL Monorail, Kelana Jaya line, the newer SBK Line, and the Komuter train that takes you to the Batu Caves will get you to most popular landmarks and sites around the city. It's also helpful to be familiar with KL Sentral as this is the major hub for transportation which includes buses to and from both airport terminals, the KLIA Express train to both terminals and other trains. By the way there are shower facilities available for a nominal fee at KL Sentral. They were really handy one time when I had an 8 hour layover coming from Nepal while waiting for my flight to Taipei. A nice quick refreshing shower made my day while visiting KLCC just before Christmas. Even though in the video it looks like I only use tokens, this was only for demonstration purposes. I recommend if you're staying longer than a short layover to get a KL Touch 'n Go card. They are super convenient and you will feel it was well worth the nominal 5 Ringit purchase when you see the line-ups at the token machines during rush hour. Here's more on the Touch 'n Go card:https://www.touchngo.com.my/CMS/Personal/Products/Touch-n-Go-Card/About-Touch-n-Go-Card/As English is an official language of Malaysia you will find instructions and signs in English everywhere! Hope you enjoy the video and it helps you have a smooth stay in one of my favorite cities of Southeast Asia!

How To Do A Cheap, Cheap Layover in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

One of the best layovers for value in Asia, Kuala Lumpur offers fantastic and amazing food value, good inexpensive accommodations, and cheap transportation to and from it's international airport terminals. I challenged myself on this layover to come up with a total cost of less than $30 that would cover transportation including within the city. Dinner, and light breakfast and a little sightseeing. Staying at KL Sentral is one of the most convenient spots in the city to get quickly to and from the KLIA terminal 1, about an hour each way, and to some of the major tourist attractions. I found an inexpensive hotel room with a queen size bed, private bath, t.v., free wifi on agoda.com at KL Sentral. Since it's close to Little India, a spot loaded with character and inexpensive dining options it was a quick and easy choice for dinner, within walking distance. That also made it easy to catch the LRT to KLCC to do a little sightseeing around the Petronas Twin Towers after. For a light breakfast before I caught the bus back to KLIA I stopped at an inexpensive restoran for some toast, roti canai, and coffee. The total cost of the layover was $23!!! You could even do it cheaper with a dorm bed for $7 but sorry, I'm not that cheap!!!Thanks again for watching the video and subscribing to the channel. It's what lead us to start our first podcast, our satellite podcasts, Fanthropological, and so much more. We want to help others learn more about different fandoms, and to create empathy with other fans: We dream of a world where other fans aren't "those Weird-o's", but just folks with different tastes. Petronas Towers is the icon and focal point making it memorable. Not a lot of attractions and must see - ones that are are spread over wide area. Big events like Formula 1 has been key to driving tourism. Modern and fast changing. Often Hazy due to pollution locally but also from effects of forest fires in Indonesia known as Sumatra haze lasting 1 to 2 weeks a time. 3 main ethic groups : Malays , Chinese and Indians - religiously diverse but most of population is Islamic (official religion ) but not strict Islamic country. HistoryFounded in 1857 when Chinese prospectors sent to find tin in the area - only 17 of the 87 survived past a month due to malaria and other tropical diseases - but lure of tin attracted people. British took control and placed  strong minded and visionary Chinese governor (Kaptain Yap Ah Loy) who ensured development. Occupied by Japanese in WWII with many Chinese tortured / executed and Indians sent to work on Burma railway building (death railroad). Post the war British ruled until independence in 1957.Best time to goPretty much anytime as always constant between 20 and 30C - no rainy season as such but gets lots of rain and flooding.Getting thereGood come connections by air and cruise ships dock in Port Kelang at Star Cruise terminal about 1,5 hour drive to KLGetting around Traffic is terrible and very congested - not very predestination friendly either. Taxis (called "teksi") - make sure they use the meters. Rapid transit system (LRT - light rapid transit) is modern, cheap and pretty easy to work out - information in English. Hop-on Hop-off bus tour - takes about 3 hours to get around - more than 22 stops - mixed views on it - go to all main areas. General tips Mandatory death sentence for drug dealing or possession. Conservative dress. Good English  as is required in schools. Only drink bottled water with seal - not tap water. Haggling in markets and in places like Chinatown is the norm. Must do things to do and and seePetronas Twin ToursWhen opened was tallest building in world until Taipei 101 took the title away -  limited tickets each day to go up (only about 1000) so book online before you go or get there very early - 41st floor sky bridge then up to 86th floorSuria KLCC Mall below has over 600 designer storesKLCC park behind it is park is impressiveKL TowerNext best alternative if cannot get up Petronas though maybe better as not only see the views but also the towers - viewing from about the same height - within the Bukit Nanos forest within the cityCentral MarketBeen going since 1888 Can get the rapid transit there from Petronas as just a few stops on red line and about 1,80 ringgits each - very easyChinatownNext to Central market - old fashioned houses, markets etcNearby is Sir Mahamariamman Temple - built 1873 - very ornate Hindu templePer Dans Botanical Garden areaBird park, butterfly park and botanical gardens for nature loversGardens has over 3000 species orchids, 5000 species of hibiscus flowers created in 1880sButterfly park 6000 butterflies and 1000 species with exotic plants to create right environmentsMerdeka Square (aka Independence Square)Used it be cricket ground in British colonial times - where Independence declared now surrounded by some key buildings - 100 metre flagpole said to be tallest in worldSultan Abdul Samad building - houses supreme and high courts St Mary's cathedralRoyal Selanger ClubNearby is Masjid Jamek - National Mosque built in 1965 and largest in SE Asia - impressive looking buildingLittle India - restaurants and shops but not as in Singapore ShoppingBukt Bitang area - popular shopping area - highest concentration of malls in the city - especially for computers and electronics.Golden triangle in KLCC around towers.Further afieldBatu caves - 9 miles north - limestone caves of varying sizes - Hindu shrine inside largest cave - over 270 steps to get to it - smaller cave has museum about Hindu mythology

Trend Following with Michael Covel

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2013 18:41

Today on the podcast Covel gives us a peek into the presentations he's been giving and the responses of audiences abroad. Since February 25th he has been in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). He's given 23 presentations--anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes long--spread over 4 cities. Covel speaks to us today from Kuala Lumpur where he was only supposed to stay for two days. However, Covel was so taken by the city that he decided to stay for three or four weeks. Covel weighs in on the food, the culture, and the experiences surrounding his recent travels before getting into the kind of presentations he has been giving abroad and the investment style of the people to whom he has been speaking. Unsurprisingly, many of the largest fund managers in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur are unfamiliar with trend following; they have the a similar understanding of many in America and Europe. Most of the fund managers Covel sat down with were long-only, fundamental and value-based. Perhaps they used some predictive technical indicators on top, but that was it. Covel would go through the big picture differences between trend following and what his audience was doing. While most of these investors were unlikely to wholly adopt trend following, if you can bring a trend following strategy in-house that produces returns at a different point in time than your typical fundamental value returns--that's extremely useful information. Covel also discussed behavioral finance aspects, the idea of the black swan, and outlier move issues. Ultimately, it's about this scenario: you wake up tomorrow and you're on a desert island. You've got nothing except the closing price of the 75 most liquid global markets (which somehow magically appear in the sand), and a phone to your broker to make the trades. You have nothing else--no Bloomberg, no Wall Street Journal, no CNBC. Can you look at that data--and only that data--over time, and figure out a way to make money? That's the challenge. Can you find a positive mathematical edge in that stew of data from all those different markets? You don't even need to know the names of the markets you're trading. All you need are the prices. Can you find a positive mathematical edge in the great spirit of Ed Thorp and "Beat The Dealer"? That is the rallying cry of the trend following world--the desert island trading scenario. Even if someone elected not to make an allocation to a trend following firm (or did not want to trade as a trend follower themselves) Covel invited them to create a model portfolio. That way, you can at least know when trend following is doing well. That piece of information can be a useful piece of fundamental data for your fundamental trading shop. Some criticisms? The idea that Covel is not revealing the "secret sauce", holding back, or not revealing the "new thing". You have to ask yourself: Can you look at a trend following system? Test it? Look at professional trend following managers and see how they have performed? Compare it all? And believe in it? Or do you allow yourself to be distracted by other peoples' comments? Distracted by society? Ultimately that might be the big picture issue that Covel is seeing in his journey. Distraction kills focus. Free DVD? www.trendfollowing.com/win.
