Sam emphasized the importance of taking action in the present moment, even if the initial results are unexpected, and highlighted the value of learning through doing. They explored setting a structure and rewarding oneself after completing tasks to manage overwhelming feelings and boost motivation. Both encouraged starting tasks, even if they seemed daunting initially, and suggested using treats as motivation and immediate rewards to stay present. The conversation also touched on modeling as a tool for learning and self-improvement. They expanded on the idea that while people may lack expertise, they often possess valuable experience and knowledge. The importance of internalizing these lessons, rather than just viewing them as external concepts, was emphasized. They discussed the impact of self-doubt and excuses on personal and professional growth. They highlighted the importance of overcoming self-doubt and taking action, even if it means stepping outside of one's comfort zone. They stressed the need to become aware of limiting beliefs and how these can sabotage progress, as well as the importance of challenging and reframing these beliefs to move forward. The conversation also explored the significance of self-reflection and self-parenting as adults to overcome past traumas and negative patterns. They discussed examining old stories, offering unconditional love and understanding, and considering alternative perspectives. Sam shared a humorous anecdote about her husband's advice to act in the opposite way to set boundaries intentionally. She also introduced the "90-second Doodles" technique to express and process emotions through drawing. Finally, they discussed utilizing 15-minute work sessions to achieve tasks and goals. Sam explained the benefits of this approach, including its accessibility for those with busy schedules and its effectiveness for tasks that may seem overwhelming. The value of a community aspect was also noted, as demonstrated by Sam's subscription service, The Daily Practicum, which provides a supportive environment for individuals to work on their goals.

Today, I'm talking to Samantha Bennett in the USA, author, keynote speaker and mentor. She has written two books in particular that sparked an interest in me when I asked her to be my guest, “Get It Done” and “Start Right Where You Are”. As a creative person and entrepreneur herself, Samantha is interested in how creative people make decisions when there is no external accountability and the only one counting on you is you. From her first foray into the world of training, Sam discusses some of the mistakes she made, so you don't have to, and how you can find your incredible method for getting things done,e such as: Banishing procrastination and self-doubt Building your self-confidence Improving the ability to think on your feet And more Check out the episode now!

Over the next few weeks, I'll be reading Radical Self Acceptance by Tara Brach and discussing it on the podcast. Feel free to read along and join the conversation. Or if you've read the book, feel free to share your thoughts and questions with me at contact@changesbigandsmall.com or you can live a voice recording by clicking on the Start here link. Self-acceptance means knowing your strengths, weaknesses, successes, failures, and seeing yourself as worthy of love, of dignity, despite your imperfections. It means accepting who you really are, not who you wish you should be or want to be. It has no judgement, only truth. This sets it apart from the related idea of self-esteem because self-esteem only focuses on the "esteemed" or the positive aspects of yourself. Self-acceptance looks at all of yourself and likes yourself regardless of the "flaws", and it is essential before any transformation. From the exploration this season, we know that there are many things that affect our self acceptance. These include our relationship with ourselves and with others, the stories we tell about the various facets of our lives and our self-image. I’ve known Sam Bennet for many years now. She’s a writer, speaker, actor, and creativity-productivity specialist as well as the author of the best-selling books, Get It Done and Start Right Where You Are. Sam is the creator of the Organized Artist Company where she helps creative individuals get unstuck and move forward with their goals. She is such a joy and she gives the best advice when I need to hear it. In this episode, Sam and I discuss procrastination and overwhelm. She reminds us that other people can’t make us feel overwhelmed, it’s a feeling we put onto ourselves. And, she shares some ways to reclaim our power. As Sam said, “When you are doing something you like, in the way you like to do it, it’s not so hard to get stuff done.” In this episode you’ll hear: What if you let this thing (whatever that thing is for you) be as big as it wants to be? (8:22) Overwhelm and procrastination are BIG words and used to describe many things (10:39) Setting worthy goals and how one can achieve them; plus the ‘groan’ zone (14:56) Some action steps to use your imagination for good (20:50) The eye-opening thing Sam does when she sees people doing things in which she disapproves (30:10) A 5-minute art exercise you can do to help you work through your feelings (32:19) The difference between being creative and being artistic (39:33) http://yourkickasslife.com/329
In today’s episode, we have the extraordinary Sam Bennett joining me. She is an actor, speaker, teacher, poet, a creativity and productivity specialist and also the best selling author of Get It Done and Start Right Where You Are. This woman is going to blow your mind! We talk a lot about her acting years, her very well known actor friends, how she has spent a lot of time doing incredible TV and at the same time experiencing fear and struggled to truly be in the spotlight. We talk a lot about being afraid of success and of truly being seen. We had a lot of fun in this conversation. We talk about life, death, creativity, procrastination, depression and everything in between. Sam is very open and honest about her personal experience of depression, how it shows up in her life and how she moves through life in spite of it. This conversation is for anyone who wants to create something new, who wants to find their way to a brand new part of their identity and to also remember their core self - the self that has been with them forever. If you are going through a transition of any kind and you are about to jump into a brand new chapter, if you want to create something for the world and yourself, then I hope you will take the time to listen. It might just be life-changing. “Showing up more fully for yourself allows you to show up more fully for your family, for your friends, and for the world.” ~Sam Bennett Sam talks about that voice inside of us, that might just be a quiet whisper right now. The voice that says you can do this too. My request of you is to please make sure that voice is being heard and taken seriously. However quiet it is, it is Divine. It is God or the universe talking to you and it’s your destiny. Be sure to comment below or connect with me on Instagram and let me know what you think of this conversation. Sam Bennett is a creativity and productivity expert, author, and a woman who proudly won’t be under fluorescent office lights for too long. Today, we talk about her background in acting and her time at The Second City in Chicago, and how those experiences helped guide her to a profession that helps others identify and call forth their own creative genius. We also talk about the difference between creativity and artistic ability, some tips to overcome procrastination, and how we can begin to have more meaning and impact right where we are. Key Takeaways: [4:04] Samantha explains that she decides to go by Sam on her books because men still sell more books than women. [9:08] Sam is a true theater kid at heart, and while at Second City from 1986 to 1994 she worked almost every job possible in the building in addition to being an actor and performer. [14:03] While attending college and university certainly has benefits and opportunities, it is not the only path to success. What matters, even more, is a drive to work hard and keep going, making the right connections and telling yourself a story of success rather than limitation. [20:17] Sam knew she wasn’t cut out for full-time office life and was a trendsetter in the gig economy. When she got a job at the Sam Christensen Studios in identity definition and personal branding, she felt a calling and loved she had the ability to help others express the truth of who they really are. This set her on a path to create a workshop called “Get It Done,” and the rest is history. [23:37] Her book, Get it Done, explains that while there is no one way for multi-talented creatives to make the best decisions with a surefire success rate, we can break things down into chunks and tackle them one small step at a time. [25:03] There is a difference between creative and artistic. We all have creative genius inside of us. Often times we take it for granted because it’s no big deal to us, and feels just as natural as the air we breathe. [30:01] One of Sam’s great tips: turn your feelings into art. Dance, sing, write, or draw a picture and capture how you feel through colors, textures, and shape. [33:50] Procrastination has many different reasons underneath it. First, you just actually may not want to do it, and it’s a “should” you could even remove from your responsibilities. Second, it seems too big and daunting. This is where Sam advises trying taking the smallest possible baby step for 15 minutes a day and seeing after some time if it is worth proceeding in the present moment. [38:09] We need time and space to create. [42:53] Sam’s next work will really dive into creative dichotomies when two things are equally true and they appear to be opposite. She has experienced that we don’t have to choose one route, but try to bring these two things closer together and surf the tension between them. [44:50] Goals and deadlines can help us create accountability and a realistic timeline. [50:28] We have many more opportunities for creativity and creation in our life than we think we do. One way to get started right away is to ask yourself: “How can I show up 10% more today?” [53:01] Start Right Where You Are reminds us to use the resources, people, and opportunities around us right now to move forward on the path towards our dreams. [54:59] Spend 15 minutes a day before you check your email on the projects that matter most to you. After 18 international bestsellers, Seth Godin has released perhaps his most important book. His new title: This Is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn To See (Portfolio) just hit #1 on The Wall Street Journal list and was an immediate New York Times bestseller. But Seth could care less. What this master teacher knows (and wants us to know) is the joy of serving the smallest viable audience. The satisfaction that comes from making things better by making better things. "The best-selling book in America this year will not be purchased by 99% of the population,” Seth tells me and my guest co-host Samantha Bennett. But that’s good news for us writers because “smallest is easy for us.” It’s this mindset, as you’ll hear, that keeps the infinite resource of creativity from shrinking away. Seth and Sam (bestselling author of Get It Done and Start Right Where You Are) are big admirers of each other’s work, and nothing thrills me more than being a literary matchmaker by putting people together on this show. Like when Glennon Doyle came on to guest co-host with her idol, Anne Lamott (who she’d never met). Or, how Terry McMillan and Dani Shapiro, both great novelists and teachers, swapped outrageous stories and laughs. Or the time Robert McKee guest co-hosted with one of his literary favorites, Dean Koontz. To hear Sam and Seth talk shop left me mostly speechless. (Not my norm, as you may know. I think I said fewer words in this entire episode than in my usual intros!) I feel so blessed to be here. Seth has taught and inspired millions of entrepreneurs, marketers, leaders, readers (and me!) via his daily blog (one of the most popular in the world), and through his online courses, lectures, and bestselling books. He’s the inventor of countless ideas that have made their way into mainstream business lingo (from the book blurb! and Permission Marketing to Purple Cow, Tribes, and The Dip). But marketing—telling our stories to people who need them—is in crisis. For thirty years Seth has seen this revolution coming, describing it to us, and mapping it out for us. And it's being taken away by bottom fishers and scammers. Thankfully we have Seth to guide us through meaningfully connecting with people who want what we’ve got. You’re also about to hear why he stopped napping (this is pure gold!); his thoughts on debt (which could help you keep more of your gold); what it takes to reach the masses (and how to avoid making average stuff for average people); getting into the practice of picking yourself; Godin’s First Law of Book Signings, and, brace yourself, the future of bookstores. And, for those of you who don’t yet know Sam, you’re in for a major treat. Warning, though: She’s addictive, and you’ll have one more person to follow after this episode. Sam’s the owner of the Organized Artist Company and one of the most brilliant and delightful people I’ve ever known (which is why I'm the luckiest that she’s my copilot over in the Beautiful Writers Group). Okay! There’s so much to cover. I’m so happy you’re here. Linda xx
On this annual birthday episode of the Beautiful Writers Podcast, my wish is to give the gift of conversations you haven’t heard before. Fresh and (hopefully) profoundly helpful content to uplevel your writing experience. Today’s show makes my heart happy. It’s a collection of excerpts from industry superstars conducted over several years for the Beautiful Writers Group (my membership community, where this podcast was born and writers get all sorts of support for $25 a month). I’m elated to finally share some of my most cherished snippets of advice from our expert series interviews, today, free of charge. We start this birthday party off with the author of "Get It Done" and "Start Right Where You Are," Samantha Bennett (who now joins me every month to answer questions in our monthly Q & A calls). Sam is a creative genius with an enviable bedside manner. Meaning, she gives our members soulful, tear-jerking, butt-kicking advice they can’t get enough of. I have no doubt she will get you motivated and EXCITED about what you can and will achieve—in as little as 15 minutes a day. Next, Harrison Scott Key—winner of the Thurber Prize for American Humor for his memoir "The World's Largest Man"—will make you laugh (and blush) with his insane stories. Nothing and no one in his life are off limits. Harrison's nearly unbelievable work ethic will either scare the hell out of you or renew your faith in scaling any publishing mountain. Warning: get earplugs for the kids! (Smiley.) The bestselling author of "Paris Letters" and "A Paris Year," Janice MacLeod, helps us say YES to our writing life over everything that doesn’t matter. She shares how she scripted every writer’s dream life by ditching the day job to travel the world—in do-able steps. Plus, I can almost guarantee you’ve never heard what she learned about the power bookstores have over your book covers. (Say, what?!) Arielle Ford, author of ten books (including her international bestseller "The Soulmate Secret") has the unique mindset of having been a literary agent and top book publicist (with 12, #1 NYT bestselling placements). Though grounded and practical, Arielle bleeds mystical. For this show, she shares her Secret Sauce for connecting with the Unified Field, where everything you want—in publishing and in everyday life—is already waiting for you. Tim Grahl, book marketing rockstar, is the author of "Your First 1000 Copies" and the recent, "Running Down a Dream" and helped five of his author clients hit the NYT bestseller’s list in the same week! In this conversation, Tim talks about how to put your best foot forward on Amazon.com (where 40-65% of books are sold)—which includes details of ramping up your author page and how to get those pesky 1-star reviews removed. Author Rhonda Britten, who has one of the most painful childhood stories imaginable, created a program to keep from taking her own life. Fearless Living has healed her and countless others and led to four books and an Emmy-winning role as a life coach for TV's "Starting Over." Rhonda is always coming up with new tricks and the one she shares here—a touching exercise for connecting deeply with your book—is one of the coolest tips I’ve ever heard. And finally, acclaimed YA novelist, Aditi Khorana--who was my guest co-host here last month with best-selling novelist Rosie Walsh--shares how her 1,000-word a day diet helps her be so prolific. Among other things in this excerpt, we talk about how to train your beautiful muse to show up and play full out. I wish I had time to share all of our BWG expert interviews with you here! But you can get immediate access to our full library (and other benefits of membership)at beautifulwritersgroup.com Welcome. I'm so happy you're here! xo

How to get unstuck to achieve your goals with actor/author/entrepreneur Sam Bennett. What You'll Learn in this Episode: A cool breathing exercise. How small shifts can yield big results. How to participate more in the present moment. How to get unstuck to achieve your goals. How 15 minutes in the morning can transform your life. How making “5-minute art” can help you get your feelings out, to help you interact with them in a different way to gain a new thought and a new way to move forward. More from her book, Start Right Where You Are. High Five Highlights: How does your work as an actor and an improv artist help your work as a marketing and personal branding expert? Everything you know about life is in the process of improvisation. What came first: acting and improv or your business skills? Acting by far; I was born to be an actor. What made you want to write this book? My first book is called Get it Done but something was missing. I needed to tell my own journey of broke to having a thriving business, so I wrote the book to capture some of that story. Do you have a favorite quote or book you can share? “The cure for everything is saltwater -- sweat, tears or the sea.” "Finish this sentence: “Throughout my life the most important thing I've learned is...” Relationships are everything, other people are everything. "All the things you keep telling yourself you want to do, be, or have are possible for you, if you are willing to take it one step at a time,” states Sam Bennett, author of Start Right Where You Are. “No matter how long you’ve been dreaming your dreams, they are still alive, still possible. Just because they haven’t happened up to now doesn’t mean they won’t happen. And just because your life, career, or projects haven’t gone the way you may have wanted doesn’t mean they are not going well. No matter what has happened to you up to now, you have an opportunity to create a new story, beginning right now.” Same offers 66 small, do-able changes that can lead to big joy - turn complaints into requests, minimum daily requirements to accomplish your goals, a few remarkably destructive communication habits to stop right now, greet your mistakes with grace, and Will success make you selfish?

It’s almost Thanksgiving, so I have to start today’s episode with my gratitude list! Here goes: got to see the sunrise grateful for my Ginger kitty my amazing 10 year old son - for so many reasons my husband Bob - he’s amazing in so many ways my clients - strong, curious, brave women who are doing transformative work my listeners - I feel you. I hear you and I am so thankful that you show up here Connect with us on Facebook in our group - bit.ly/wfdgroup I’ll have to admit, in these last few weeks I have been tested. My gratitude has been tested. I started this podcast because I know that the pursuit of women’s health is a worthy pursuit. I shared my feelings in an episode after the election and received some pretty strong critiques from you. It’s so hard for women to have a safe place. We are always being judged and it takes its toll on our bodies and our minds. My comments in the show after the episode was that many women were feeling unsafe. Many women were feeling triggered by the sexism being displayed. I even encouraged women to take a self-defense class. I’m doing that and empowering myself to take control and feel powerful. I recommended getting together with other women and supporting each other. I received some of the meanest comments that I have ever received. I was surprised by the anger that women were using so much anger in these comments. I was told I was being melodramatic. I was told to stop re-victimizing myself. I was criticized and told that there was nothing to be afraid of and I was just stoking fear. I responded to every woman and asked them to start listening to and responding to other women in a different way. My goal is not to have anyone leave the group, but we have to keep having conversations and actually hearing each other. In other news, The Crave Cast will be changing to a different name in the near future. It’s going to be called Her Rules! It will still be me interviewing great people, but we will just be called a different name. The mission is still the same and we have so much in store for you! Today’s guest is Sam Bennett. She’s the author of a new book “Start Right Where You Are” and she also has another book called “Get It Done”. She is a writer, speaker, actor, teacher and creativity/productivity specialist. She is the creator of the www.TheOrganizedArtistCompany.com, dedicated to helping creative people get unstuck, especially by helping them focus and move forward on their goals.
