Easing the mental load, minimizing the to-do list, letting go of the things that don't really matter is a constant work in progress for me – but when I'm in the throes of it all, I often think “there's got to be a better way”. I've invited Sam Bennett, creativity/productivity specialist to join us to share her 15 minute method with all of us. Sam is the author of the bestselling book Get It Done as well as Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists. Her latest book just released in June and is called The 15-Minute Method: The Surprisingly Simple Art of Getting It Done. Having spent most of her life working as a professional actor and improvisor, Sam brings a quick wit to her writing and her work as a top instructor on LinkedIn Learning with over a million “learners” worldwide. It will all get narrowed down to those very few things that matter most at the end, so what are we waiting for? Someone else to decide what truly matters for us? A point in time where things all of a sudden get easy and simple? No, we get to decide. And like so many things worth doing, we start small, one step at a time, 15 minutes devoted to what matters most to you. We are all pretty clear on the dangers of driving while intoxicated. But there also appears to be some danger in driving while dehydrated. Who knew? This episode begins with some fascinating research that shows a link between dehydration and driver error – and the results will surprise you. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/driving-while-dehydrated-can-be-just-as-dangerous-as-drinkdriving-study-suggests-10187670.html How do you get a lot of things done without the feeling of being overwhelmed? Part of the problem is understanding why you feel overwhelmed. When you do, it is easy to stop it according to my guest, time management expert Sam Bennett author of the book Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists (https://amzn.to/2ZKmwDs). Listen as she reveals how to take control of your day and accomplish the important tasks – and how NOT to be one of those people who is always complaining about how busy and overwhelmed they are. If you don't have enough confidence in yourself and your abilities, it is hard to succeed. Yet having too much confidence can also get in the way. So how do you get the right amount of confidence and use it to your advantage? Here to discuss that is Don Moore, professor of management at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and author of the book Perfectly Confident (https://amzn.to/3cuzZTr). Have you ever felt really intense loneliness. It can be excruciatingly painful. And that turns out to be a good thing. Listen as I reveal how to use the pain of loneliness to not feel lonely anymore. For the recovering perfectionist, "self-care" is a word that can carry a lot of heavy energy and pressure. You want to take good care of yourself, but it can be hard when you're being constantly bombarded by unrealistic expectations of what self-care looks like and you've already got a lot on your plate. Is self-care really the answer to all of life's problems, and if so, how do you approach it in a way that is sustainable and nourishing for us as HSP's? That's what we're exploring in episode 11 (a very spiritual, intuitive and life-affirming number by-the-way!) In this episode, you'll learn: the real reasons why you seem to struggle so much with self-care how perfectionism gets in the way of consistent self-care routines why you may be avoiding self-care (& what you miss out on if you do) the root driver of poor motivation, willpower and "falling of the wagon" lessons that I learned as a HSP when I committed to a daily rest practice. With this episode, I intend for you: feel validated in knowing that the pressure you feel to perform "perfect" self-care is normal and it's not your fault. put your mind, body and heart to feel at ease with life lessons around rest and self-care that go deeper and heal. be encouraged and empowered to give daily rest, relaxation and self-care a try just to see what happens in your life. Want more on this topic? I'm hosting a 5-day Learning Series on the Nourished Sensitive Newsletter for HSPs who want to learn step-by-step how to take better care of themselves in a sustainable and nourishing way. Ian Anderson Gray talks with Jason Barnard about live shows for recovering perfectionists. Ian Anderson Gray is a motivational speaker, trainer, teacher and consultant who travels the world. He is the founder of Confident Live Marketing Academy, which teaches entrepreneurs how to successfully use live video to increase their influence, authority and revenue. And he also has a blog, Seriously Social, which is all about social media tools and live videos Live videos are incredibly powerful and helpful for three types of people (and you are probably in one of these groups). For beginners who don't feel comfortable and confident standing in front of a camera, shooting live video can be more than a little scary. But it is also a way to overcome those fears. Incredibly, live video is also a time saver for professionals, hmmmm in what way? Well, it would save you the time it takes to re-do or re-record your videos to perfect them. And that leads us to the third type of person live video is great for… perfectionists. There is no such thing as perfection in live video, and that makes it a great way for perfectionists to break their own mould. In this episode with Jason Barnard and the brilliantly insightful Ian Anderson Gray talk about how to turn your live videos into a game changer for yourself and your brand… stepping out of your comfort zone, publishing smartly, creating a variety of content from the initial live video stream including podcasts, blog posts, and video babies. “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self to the self… What we really truly desire, want, and crave that could actually fulfill us is when we settle back into our own wholeness.” - Veronica Thai In this episode of the Curious Monki Podcast, Ashley Sondergaard and I have an amazing conversation about creating more self-compassion, how practicing self-care doesn't automatically cultivate self-compassion in your life, and tools that we use to elevate our self-care. Ashley Sondergaard is a self-care coach, yoga teacher, astrologer, and host of the Yoga Magic podcast. For 9 years, she has studied yoga, meditation, astrology and mindfulness practices that prioritize self-care and self-discovery. After having her two girls, Ashley discovered the hard way that taking care of yourself first is the only way to take care of others. Today, she supports her students & clients in up-leveling their everyday routines into magical self-care rituals. [00:01 – 05:19] Recovering Perfectionists and Ex-Hustlers Ashley and I introduce ourselves [05:20 – 16:21] The Biggest Life Shifts When We Stopped Hustling How I switched from hustle to ease Having to first uncover what ease and flow really meant Starting in school, the pressure to get 100% marks and the nagging urge of never being enough carried itself into the corporate world, overworking, always wanting the next position, never being satisfied with which rung in the corporate ladder I stood on Bringing the hustle mentality into my yoga business How my life shifted when I hired my first coach How Ashley hustled for a pipe dream that wasn't even hers Getting off the structured corporate pathway she was on enabled her to question what she really wanted We are not linear beings [16:22 – 26:48] Are We There Yet? Divine feminine and masculine energy and how to ground yourself when you're getting impatient with your process Hustling starts in your mind What are you making it mean? Ashley and I share where we want to bring more self-compassion into our lives When something fearful or uncomfortable happens, our instinct is to want to breathe it away, but sometimes letting it stay and heal on its own is the best form of self-compassion How Ashley learns about herself through astrology, where she thrives, is challenged, how she interacts with the world and the people around her [31:35 – 41:39] Self Compassion Means Embracing All OThe Pieces of Yourself Ashley and I dive deeper into astrology Ascendant and descendant signs As a life coach, you probably attract a lot of clients that have the energy of your descendant Looking at birth charts to help navigate self-care The sun is your essence, your identity, and where you're shining the brightest. Use your sun sign to determine your physical practices [41:40 – 52:27] Our Biggest Self Compassion and Spiritual Journey Lessons Ashley Know yourself Don't shit on yourself Trust the process We are more powerful than we realize Veronica Yoga is the journey of self Hold space for yourself Breathe Be with the fear [52:27 – 53:43] Closing Segment Connect with Ashley Sondergaard! (Her links are below) Key Quotes: “When I first quit my job, started teaching yoga and a podcast, thinking I'm now aligned, I still brought in that habit of hustle… It was highly unhealthy and it was that self-pressure of not being able to stop until you reach a certain point. And it wasn't until I hired my very first coach, who was fantastic, that she broke that mentality for me.” - Veronica Thai “We are not linear beings, we are human beings, we're part of nature, which means that we're cyclical, just like how the seasons change from season to season, just like how trees change with the seasons, leaves grow, leaves fall off. We are human.” - Veronica Thai “Coaches need coaches too.” - Ashley Sondergaard “When I look at a birth chart, whether it be mine, my partners, my kids, my friends, or my family, I get to see who they are at their essence. And that's not always like good or bad. There are spectrums to every part of the chart and what we choose to embody. Whatever we decide to take on at that moment is really up to us.” - Ashley Sondergaard “My biggest lessons for self-compassion is to know yourself, don't sh*t on yourself, and just trust the process.” - Ashley Sondergaard Resources Mentioned This episode is brought to you by Offering Tree. That’s what I discuss with time management expert Sam Bennett author of the book Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists (https://amzn.to/2ZKmwDs). She discusses how to take control of your day and accomplish the important tasks – and how NOT to be one of those people who is always complaining about how much they have to do and how busy they are. When you interact with other people you make judgments about them. You also make judgements about how they are judging you and what they are thinking. The interesting thing is that you are probably wrong according to human behavior expert Mark Bowden author of the book Truth & Lies: What People Are Really Thinking (https://amzn.to/3etmqUT). Listen as Mark explains how to size up situations and the people you deal with in a way that gets you closer to understanding what other people are REALLY thinking.Loneliness can feel very painful. And that turns out to be a good thing. Listen as we discuss how to use the pain of loneliness to not feel lonely anymore. Book review of Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists by Sam Bennett. Spoiler alert: I love this book!
This extra deep-dive episode is especially for my fellow Recovering Perfectionists, Overachievers and Workaholics. If you've been the type of person (for perhaps your whole life) that is always racing to the next goal, the next outcome, the next achievement - always busying yourself with the reaching of these goals (be it business, income, body shape, job promotion, ranking at your company etc..) - then chances are, it's easy for you to feel GUILTY about relaxing, taking it easy, spending quality time with those you love, taking days off, and perhaps even allowing your self-care to fall by the way side. The gym, eating well, fresh air and leisure time may seem to just get in the way of your goals... You've never truly felt good and confident enough as you are, because your 'good enough' feeling is perpetually waiting for you around the corner at the next achievement or goal, and then the next and the next... Self-doubt, second guessing, and over analysis is part of your every day life. This results in feeling exhausted, drained, and never living up to your full potential. Never good enough. Not for you, and not really in the eyes of anyone else, either (in your mind at least). Perhaps you start to wonder "what's the point?" and can't stick to your goals at all anymore. Maybe it begins to affect relationships with loved ones, friends, your children etc - because you're always distracted by your need to achieve. Texts, emails, social media, distraction, guilt - you SHOULD be working on achieving something useful. Because ONCE you achieve, THEN you can finally relax and spend more time with them right?..... Sound familiar? Sound like a self-defeating pattern???? If you're ready to rediscover your POWER, CONFIDENCE, STRIDE, ENERGY and SOUL FREEDOM, all while feeling LIGHTER and MORE JOYFUL THAN EVER - you're in the right place my friend! This will not only feel like a 1000000 lbs weight being lifted off your chest (of self-inflicted pressure!) but your loved ones will thank you for this noticeable transformation as well. In this episode you will learn; * 4 Root Causes of Overachieving/Workaholism * The #1 Most Common Pain We're All Secretly Hiding * How to Ensure Overachieving/Workaholism doesn't steal your life away, and steal you from your family and friends causing them great pain, too * How to Heal Each of these 4 Root Causes So You Can FINALLY Truly Enjoy Your Life, and Watch Your Self-Confidence SOAR! (This is a MUST listen, my friend, trust me!) Sam Bennett is a creativity and productivity expert, author, and a woman who proudly won’t be under fluorescent office lights for too long. Today, we talk about her background in acting and her time at The Second City in Chicago, and how those experiences helped guide her to a profession that helps others identify and call forth their own creative genius. We also talk about the difference between creativity and artistic ability, some tips to overcome procrastination, and how we can begin to have more meaning and impact right where we are. Key Takeaways: [4:04] Samantha explains that she decides to go by Sam on her books because men still sell more books than women. [9:08] Sam is a true theater kid at heart, and while at Second City from 1986 to 1994 she worked almost every job possible in the building in addition to being an actor and performer. [14:03] While attending college and university certainly has benefits and opportunities, it is not the only path to success. What matters, even more, is a drive to work hard and keep going, making the right connections and telling yourself a story of success rather than limitation. [20:17] Sam knew she wasn’t cut out for full-time office life and was a trendsetter in the gig economy. When she got a job at the Sam Christensen Studios in identity definition and personal branding, she felt a calling and loved she had the ability to help others express the truth of who they really are. This set her on a path to create a workshop called “Get It Done,” and the rest is history. [23:37] Her book, Get it Done, explains that while there is no one way for multi-talented creatives to make the best decisions with a surefire success rate, we can break things down into chunks and tackle them one small step at a time. [25:03] There is a difference between creative and artistic. We all have creative genius inside of us. Often times we take it for granted because it’s no big deal to us, and feels just as natural as the air we breathe. [30:01] One of Sam’s great tips: turn your feelings into art. Dance, sing, write, or draw a picture and capture how you feel through colors, textures, and shape. [33:50] Procrastination has many different reasons underneath it. First, you just actually may not want to do it, and it’s a “should” you could even remove from your responsibilities. Second, it seems too big and daunting. This is where Sam advises trying taking the smallest possible baby step for 15 minutes a day and seeing after some time if it is worth proceeding in the present moment. [38:09] We need time and space to create. [42:53] Sam’s next work will really dive into creative dichotomies when two things are equally true and they appear to be opposite. She has experienced that we don’t have to choose one route, but try to bring these two things closer together and surf the tension between them. [44:50] Goals and deadlines can help us create accountability and a realistic timeline. [50:28] We have many more opportunities for creativity and creation in our life than we think we do. One way to get started right away is to ask yourself: “How can I show up 10% more today?” [53:01] Start Right Where You Are reminds us to use the resources, people, and opportunities around us right now to move forward on the path towards our dreams. [54:59] Spend 15 minutes a day before you check your email on the projects that matter most to you. Guiding Principle, Quote, or Mantra The cure for everything is salt water...sweat, tears or the sea. When You “Tripped Up” in Partnership Samantha has the habit of being loyal to the point of self neglect. There’s been many relationships, with both people and organizations, that she’s let go on for way too long. She would be very unhappy but allow it to go on for far too long before she would leave. Find out what happened next by listening to the podcast. Proudest Moment In Partnership About 10 years ago she was talking to her great friend, Phil. He had a wonderful idea for a show. He was wondering if she would write the script for it. She said yes right away. It ended up being a great show. Then they had about 8 years of “development hell”. They would think they had an investor, then it wouldn’t work out. Things kept repeating. Find out how it all comes together by listening to the podcast. You are always getting paid. And you are always getting paid in the currency you are asking for. So maybe the currency you're asking for is “likes” on Facebook. Or maybe the currency you're asking for a is a lot of compliments from your friends. Or maybe the currency you're asking for is neglect. For a long time myself esteem was so slow that it really mattered to me that Iw work hard and kind of have nobody notice. That kind of worked for me in a weird way. When I started the organized artists company, I had this wonderful list of people who were really responsive and they'd write back and they would click and like, but they never bought anything. And finally I realized that the problem was me because I was more invested in their affection than I was in making a living. And the minute I decided “I think it's possible for me to have their affection and make a living”, I tripled my income. – Samantha Bennett Samantha Bennett is a writer, speaker, actor, teacher and creativity/productivity specialist and author of the bestselling: Get It Done: From Procrastination to Creative Genius in 15 Minutes a Day.
