We take a deep dive into the huge breaking news that Speaker Robin Vos and Republican leaders walked away from state budget negotiations with Governor Tony Evers on Wednesday. Ratcheting up the battle, Republicans taunted the Governor by predicting he would sign a partisan budget that under funds his priorities. We talk about how this decision provides a new opportunity for Evers to re-engage the public about what is at stake in the budget battle and how their engagement in the fight is critical to winning on key public priorities. We and our allies continue to encourage people to call Governor Evers (1-608-266-1212) and urge him to veto any state budget that fails to meet key public priorities: properly funded public schools, expand BadgerCare, fund child care, and no new prisons. Contact your State Legislators today and tell them to reject any state budget that fails to meet these minimum standards. We review a new UW-Extension study finding rising housing costs are prompting many to forgo or delay medical care, and we discuss the significant implications of these findings. We close with an update on the federal budget battle where Senator Ron Johnson has positioned himself on center stage in the developing budget drama. Johnson, who recently called Medicaid recipients “grifters,” publicly opposes the House budget because it does not cut enough from Medicaid, SNAP, and other critical public programs.

James 5:16-18Confess your faults one to another, and pray one foranother, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteousman avails much. Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and heprayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by thespace of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gaverain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. In Luke 11:1-13, the Lord is teaching His disciples topray. Over the past few days, we have been talking about the importance of prayerin our lives, and for the world around us! If there is anything we need tolearn to do, it is to pray. We go to school for twelve years to get aneducation so we can get out and get a job to make money. We might go for four ormore years so we can make more money. We might go to Bible College to learn howto preach and teach the Bible, learn to be a pastor or church leader, and thatis all well and fine. But we rarely take classes or spend the time to learn howto pray.  We must realize by now that an education, job skills, moneyand a good economy, is not what it going to take to save your marriage, to bringyour children back to God, to heal your broken heart, to give you mental, emotional, and spiritual peace. They will not save our country either. I know Isound like a broken record, but the answer to the divisions, the economy, the socialand cultural issues in America, are not going to be found in the White House, the Congress, the State Legislators, but in our own houses where righteous believersknow how to pray “effectual fervent” prayers.  When I think of prayer, I can't help but think of James 5and the prayer of Elijah. He was a man just like us; “subject to likepassions”. He had the same type of problems, challenges, emotions, andissues. His country Israel was in a mess under the heathen pagan leadership ofAhab and Jezebel. The whole nation was following the religion of Baal worship.Today, for the most part, America is following the religion of humanism. Theworship of self! We live to please ourselves. That's humanism! The last verse in Judges 21:25 says, “Everyone is doingwhat is right in their own eyes”. The land was filled with chaos, confusion, anarchy, and violence. What is the answer. Like Elijah, we can getright with God and pray! The promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14-15 is still in theBible and available for us today! “If My people who are called by My namewill humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wickedways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal theirland. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in thisplace.” The Lord's model prayer reminds us of our need for ourFather's presence in our lives and families. Of the need of ourFather'sguidance in joining Him in His kingdom work so His will is done on earth asit is in heaven. Of the need of our Father's provision every day both physicallyand spiritually. And of our daily need for our Father's pardon for oursins. In order for us to pray effectual fervent prayers thatavail much, we must have pure hearts and clean hands (James 4:7-10). As wesubmit our lives to the Lord, the devil must flee. As we confess our sins, ourhearts are purified. As we join the Father in His kingdom work, our hands arecleansed.  Amazing and wonderful, miraculous things can happen when wereally learn to pray! In my Bible, Jeremiah 33:3 still says: 'Call to Me,and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do notknow.' And we can never forget the promise of Ephesians 3:20: “Now toHim who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us”. By God's grace we should seek to learn to pray “effectualfervent prayers that avail much”! God bless!

In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Charles Hua, Founder and Executive Director of PowerLines, a new nonprofit organization aiming to modernize utility regulation to accelerate affordable, reliable, and clean energy for American consumers. He is also an energy analyst who has worked at Rewiring America, DOE's Loan Programs Office, and now at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a research affiliate.Charles wants people to pay attention to the enormous influence that public utility commissions (PUCs) have on the U.S. energy transition, and get involved with this long-neglected area, pushing for a utility regulatory system that can better serve American consumers, grow the economy, and support communities. His concern is that most states have an outdated utility regulatory system that is not prepared to tackle modern energy challenges. He also claims that there are 200 commissioners controlling the monopolistic utilities at the heart of America's electricity system, with over 200 billion dollars in utility spending.By engaging with the people, policies, and processes needed to deliver on this agenda, PowerLines approach is to pull together a big tent coalition of people interested in public utility commission (PUC) reform, including PUC staffers themselves, state legislators, clean energy providers and customers, academics and researchers, as well as grassroots groups. They'll serve as a hub for modernizing utility regulation by bringing together these diverse stakeholders to share ideas, resources, and solutions on a path forward to effective utility regulation.Charles and Ted dig into the problems with PUCs, discussing the unrestrained, unregulated authority over the U.S. electricity system. With the immense power and significance on the country's clean energy future, Charles highlights opportunities for reform, including the revision of statutes, the effectiveness of integrated resource plans, decarbonization, equity, and creating more latitude or space for regulators to embrace a more forward-thinking, innovation-oriented mindset.

Roughly 30 million Americans are currently under non-competes, so what does this ruling mean for them? Listen to hear legal analysis from KSL Legal Analyst Greg Skordas as he explains the future of the agreements to Adam Gardiner. Sen. Bob Menendez is out; what’s next?New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez has officially resigned from the United States Senate following his felony conviction in July. He says he’ll continue to appeal the verdict. The Governor of New Jersey has appointed George Helmy to finish out his term. KSL at Night host Adam Gardiner teaches Greg about the process. The role of civility in politicsKSL at Night hosts Greg Skordas and Adam Gardiner take a look at civility in politics and government. Oftentimes, we hear stories of fighting across the aisle in Congress, or of political candidates constantly attacking each other. Does it have to be this way? We take a look at civility in Utah politics and discuss how it could be a model for the rest of the country.
