This episode is an audiobook version of a collection of stories written by Steve Crandall. These stories describe his life on the road and the many excursions he's been able to experience in his life of bmx. While I didn't read every story in the book, I hope this gave you enough motivation to not only go buy the book (assuming it's still for sale), but get out there and do something. Whether it's traveling or simply doing something creative. In addition to the book, my friend Scott Towne was gracious enough to recite the Foreword (which he personally wrote for the book). I'm grateful for the opportunity to share some of Crandall's stories with everyone and I cherish my involvement in bmx. Todays guest is one of the most important people in the BMX world, and has been a huge part of shaping BMX to the way it has become. He is the founder of one of the biggest brands in BMX, FBM, which would take the world by storm with their hand built in the USA frames and parts. Not only did their products stand out, but their videos were like none other, you knew you were about to see some crazy shit when you put the tape in. Weather it be dudes trying to break glass bottles over they heads, explosions, or Lou Bickle eating light bulbs, one thing was clear, the FBM dudes loved to party. He was also the face of BMX media for so many years. You couldn't watch a Props video without seeing him with the microphone in hand. He was a crucial part of road fools, as he brought the video together by interviewing the riders throughout the trip. Things don't stop there, and in recent years we may have lost FBM, but we have gained his new Coffee brand, Drop In, and also RadShare, a non for profit aimed at keeping the stoke high by giving kids bikes and helmets. I’ve know Steve @crandallfbm the longest out of any of the group. I can’t say I’ve spent a ton of time with him in person, but we met way back in ’93(I think) when I drove out to Newburgh, NY for a BMX contest. — We were both there to ride and hawk t-shirts. I traded him an Arm & Hammer rip off graphic T from my ingeniously named brand “4130” for a “Fat Bald Man” FBM T. I think we both rode in the beginner class since the big boy class consisted of Joe Rich, Luc-e ect.. Steve rode well, bringing his trails style to the plywood and I tried to huck a bunch of shit that I still probably can’t land to this day. I believe I have video footage of this contest somewhere. — About half way through one of my runs, I snapped my chain and was about to walk my bike off the course when Steve ran out with a chain breaker. I honestly had never even used one before. I had always just used a hammer and a flathead screwdriver like a barbarian. Steve fixed it in no time flat and I was able to finish up my run. — After the comp we exchanged info and he invited me to come and hang out in Ithica. We talked on the phone, but I never did make that journey. — We ran into each other randomly at different events of the next few decades and it was always a good time. When I had the opportunity to do @411vm BMX I asked him to do a “Day In The Life” article and he couldn’t have been cooler about it. — I’m pretty sure he got the first and last run of my t-shirts, but Steve stuck with his vision and grew FBM into a full blown bike manufacturing company. It was an easy decision to ask Steve to be a part of DSIL and I’m eternally grateful for his participation. You can follow Steve at dropincoffee.com, @dropincoffee, radshare.com, @radshare

The basic premise is the amount of fun you can have riding a 20" BMX bike with suspension on any terrain. I'll leave the interpretation of this project up to each of you. What I do know is that Ruben and Garrett have something really cool going on and I'm very psyched to see what direction this goes! Now and again I like to fit in podcasts with BMX friends that may not be as well known but are really important to me personally. There are so many reasons why Brian Boneau is appreciated and respected. Brian's qualities aren't limited to being a great father, he is just a great person. Brian is the type of guy that wouldn't just give you the shirt off of his back, as he gently takes the "kick my ass" sign off that was taped on the back of that shirt to be sure you aren't inconvenienced by an ass kicking. Oh, and he just happens to be the biggest fan of BMX that I have ever met! Because of this you can only imagine how big of a deal it was to have Stu Thompson walk into the VIP room where were recording at Ray's Bike Park and sit down just as my interview with Brian started. It was a big room with Stu on a couch about 15-20' away so his voice is difficult to hear so just crank up the volume for the 1st short part of the podcast, it's worth it. The sound gets far better after that. It's not to often an absolute legend of BMX unexpectedly sits down in the middle of a podcast so I just let it ride. Brian has some seriously good karma because the next day (at the Old Fools Jam) Brian was randomly paired up with Stu for the pump track relay race! I will have pictures on my @gromdad2000 Instagram for you all to see. Anyway, the intro to the podcast is once again for RadShare.org, an organization run by Nate Hanger and Steve Crandall to get kids on bikes with the appropriate safety gear. Please check out their site and help however you can. That's about it so relax and listen to the 2nd nicest dude in BMX, Brian Boneau! I'll let you all guess who the 1st nicest guy is. Back in January of 1994 I had just flunked out of college and I felt like a complete failure, but I didn't want to return home just yet. I knew of a house with bmx riders that had just come together a couple of months previous and they were looking to take over the upstairs apt but needed a few tenants. So I moved from school directly into what became known as the Fat House. The original cast was an eclectic group of riders, mostly dirt jumpers and street riders which originally included Jody Donnelly, Mike Tag, Jeremy Reiss, Crazy Joe Daugirda, and last but not least, Steve Crandall. Crandall and the boys had just moved from Ithaca NY to move into a local skatepark that ended up going under before it got off the ground. They decided to stick it out and see what the Hoosier land could provide. Over the next couple of years Steve became more focused as a rider and a company owner, while creating some of his early videos which would become instant classics. At the time FBM was just a clothing company with a few t-shirt designs, in which Steve made every one of them by hand on a printing press located on the back porch of our house. The FBM brand continued to grow in recognition as the crew traveled to events including NBL nationals, Hoffman BS comps, local trail jams, and even the first X Games. Some of the guys Steve sponsored were starting to receive notoriety including Mike Tag, which helped the name grow even more quickly. Not only that but some of the best dirt jumps in the entire country ended up being built by Steve, Jeremy, and Mike bringing people from all over the US to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Seemingly overnight the FBM name was everywhere and the Fat House became a bmx tourist destination. We sat down at the Master Blaster Planet studios with Steve and talked about early life and growing up in Ithaca NY, getting on the public access channel, moving to Fort Wayne IN and into the Fat House, videos he released, turning FBM into a bike company, creating popular DIY events like the Ghetto Jam, announcing major bmx comps around the world, his relationship with Mike Tag, current projects with FBM, and creating a new book with Matt Coplon. So get comfortable, crank up your speakers, and get to know one of the most popular bmx riders on and off the bike.... Steve Crandall! Steve Crandall, an interview I've been looking to do since I started the podcast last October. Drove down to Richmond, VA and was treated to a taste of Steve's Richmond life. In Part 1 you will hear much about FBM's history as well as Steve's history with BMX. Be sure to turn up the volume when walks a bit away from the mic to tend to dinner among other things, those are more moments you will want to hear. FBM is a lifestyle as much as it is a brand. Steve and his FBM crew of riders and employees show that consistently with FBM events and being active with the community. Beyond that Steve talks about his announcing job with Vans and how honored he is to do it. Always bringing the stoke, that is Steve and always will be. you can find Steve at: @vansbmxprocup events www.fbmbmx.com www.leastmost.com @crandallfbm on IG And of course at the #findyourfightjam at @powderridgepark on 7/29/18

Steve Crandall joins us to discuss hydrogen fuel cells vs. lithium batteries. The two alternatives to post-internal-combustion motoring are far harder to assess than it might seem. Both require systems analysis and the systems themselves need to be weighed against the incumbent infrastructure and jobs to be done. We begin with Toyota’s fuel cell sedan announcement and recall Honda’s Clarity. The conversation leads to the observation that technical merit is not always sufficient or even necessary to market adoption success. We note that Toyota supported the Prius through years of low volume. Steve compares this to ATT’s abandonment of a cell service in the 1990?s. Steve compares the energy performance of hydrogen and gasoline and shares a look at the economic conditions necessary for a successful hydrogen fuel cell launch.

Steve Crandall brings a new perspective as a guest. Steve’s analysis of complex systems has given him a huge pool of wisdom into which we dip our dainty spoons. We survey the interlopers seeking to replace many jobs that cars have traditionally done, from horses to bicycles, planes, trains and buses. We dive deeper into a few earlier Asymcar topics including energy, regulation, infrastructure, power train evolution, societal changes, distribution networks, urbanization and consider the promise of electric bicycles. Several innovation timing lessons temper our expectations for immediate improvements. Finally, we revisit the emerging transportation information layer and how such services may change public behavior and the auto-ecosystem.
