Show Notes provided by Joe Peluso Unlike the New York Yankees in this year's World Series, New Year's at 12:00AM is the only time it is acceptable to drop the "ball". Ringing in the new year is always accompanied with a "sober" look back at the highlights of the past dozen months. But with your ever faithful Mint crew of James, Chris and Joe, the recollections are dialed down to the world of Pop Culture. And by dialed down we don't mean insignificant or trivial. Quite the contrary, we shout from the highest spires in fabled Asgaerd the accomplishments of men and women who strive to entertain, educate and amuse us within the confines ofpure, unadulterated fantasy! With gusto, and a magnum of Dom Perignon 1995 in hand (We're kidding, it's more like a Welch's Grape Juice Box), the boys list their favorite pop offerings from the previous year. "Deadpool and Wolverine", "Absolute Batman", "Only Murders in the Building" (sounds like my old East New York neighborhood), and X-Men'97 are but a few oftheir prodigious picks for 2024. But the list, like the beat, goes on. So stick around for the fullhour and see if your favorite pop culture choices made our enormous enumerations! Oh, and when that ball drops in Times Square at midnight lets hope the are no Yankee ball players responsible for catching it! What a mess that would be! HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR MINT FRIENDS AND FAITHFUL! May you find peace, health, and prosperity in 2025!
Did the Benedictine monk Dom Perignon invent Champagne? Why is Grand Cru Champagne not necessarily the best Champagne? What makes Champagne so versatile and food-friendly? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Christopher S. Ruhland, author of the award-winning Press for Champagne: A Guide to Enjoying the World's Greatest Sparkling Wine. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you are going to win a copy of his terrific book, Press for Champagne. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights What makes Champagne so versatile and food-friendly? What do you need to know about the main styles of Champagne? Why is Rosé Champagne made differently from still Rosé? What sparked Chris' interest in Champagne in particular? How did Chris' legal career and writing skills transfer over to writing about Champagne? How does Press for Champagne differ from other wine books in its approach and focus? Why does Champagne have a universal appeal, even for those who aren't wine enthusiasts? How did Champagne become the wine of celebration? What are some common myths about Champagne that Chris debunks in Press for Champagne? How has the "Champagne only comes from Champagne, France" campaign impacted consumer awareness and the global sparkling wine market? What are some of the ways popular culture has impacted certain brands of Champagne? Did the monk Dom Perignon invent Champagne? How has social media shaped our perception of Champagne? What is Chris's perspective on the pricing of Champagnes and how it affects accessibility? Key Takeaways No, the Benedictine monk Dom Perignon did not invent champagne. Champagne wasn't even sparkling until after his death. But what is true, Chris explains, is he was a cellar master of the abbey and an important figure in Champagne wine production and in advancing its quality. People talk about Grand Cru champagne with reverence as if it's categorically better than champagne without that distinction. That's not true. You can find Grand Cru champagne, which is not very good. And then you have champagnes like Louis Roederer's Cristal and Dom Perignon that are not Grand Cru champagnes. With champagne, there is such variety and so many different styles that you really can drink it throughout an entire meal, and it can all work differently based on what you're eating. About Christopher S. Ruhland Christopher S. Ruhland trained and worked as a lawyer for thirty years before becoming a mediator. He holds the Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and he has passed the French Wine Scholar, Bordeaux Master-Level, and Rhône Master-Level examinations given by the Wine Scholar Guild, all with Highest Honors. He is the author of the award-winning Press for Champagne: A Guide to Enjoying the World's Greatest Sparkling Wine and gives presentations about Champagne and teaches wine courses. Collette Dinnigan has a storied history as one of Australia's must successful fashion designers. Ever. But that's just one chapter of her creative life. Her adventurous spirit and love of colour, fabric and proportion make total sense in the context of her childhood. In the mid 70s, her father built a yacht and set sail from Durbin, South Africa for the world with his young family. When they settled in New Zealand her creative mother got involved in textile design, Collette would get the remnants and patterns, piecing them together into garments. Her list of accolades is long. Collette became the first Australian to mount a full-scale ready-to-wear collection in Paris in October 1995, and in 1996 was invited by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture to show on the prestigious Paris Fashion Week schedule. By the early 2000s, she was the darling of the international fashion scene. Dressing celebrities who didn't want to wear the old houses on the red carpet, but something more youthful and new. In 2013, she was ready for change. Never afraid to take a risk, she controversially closed the doors to her business, instead of selling. When you get to know her, you'll understand why. Today, her focus on collaborations and interiors satisfies her creative drive. She's collaborated with luxury brands like Qantas, Audi and Dom Perignon, authored children's books, designed interiors for restaurants and hotels and created wallpapers and ceramics. She's even been on Celebrity MasterChef, a credit to her commitment to pushing herself outside her comfort zone. She's authored two coffee table books, the second, ‘Bellissima, An Australian—Italian Affair', designed by Vince is on shelves in all good bookstores today. Listen in as Vince and Collette discuss her love of interiors, gardens, food, friends, curiosities, art and travel, why she chose to shut down her business rather than sell it, and rolling down 40-foot waves in the Indian Ocean. Dan Berger and Clark Smith, WineSmith. WineSmith Clark Smith has brought four unique wines on to California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Clark Smith's last appearance on CWC was this episode of last March, when he talked about pairing wine with music. WineSmith is Clark's label for personal projects. This live show ran a bit long, so the portion of the conversation dealing with Clark Smith's early career, from MIT to starting in the wine business, is here on this other podcast episode. The wine marketplace is in serious downturn. Dan Berger notes that every ten to fifteen years or so there is a recurrence of Prohibitionist thinking, people saying not to drink anything. A former Yale professor wrote about this phenomenon. Dan notes another factor, which is alternative beverage which are giving consumer more choice. Clark Smith explains that there are really two wine industries. 95% of the market is for mass market consumption and is not very good. It is meant to be “run of the mill” and not excellent. The other five percent of wineries are struggling to make wines that are “interesting.” Clark's market is the consumer who is interested is something other than the kind of inexpensive wines found in supermarkets. This is even true about the beer industry. Take the example of Russian River Brewing Co. which makes beers that are “interesting” which are driving their success. Today's Cellar Wine Tasting Today's cellar wine is a 2022 White Haven Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. It did not have sufficient acidity and has not aged particularly well. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Rodney Strong for info on the 2024 Summer Concert series. They turn to a WineSmith sparkling wine made of Grenache. A lot of champagne used to be really sweet. The Grenache taste of strawberries and the vineyard character of honeydew melon. Grenache is usually made into a red or rosé. You typically don't see white sparkling Grenache, like this. A little baked bread component in the nose, and some minerality in the aftertaste. Even with Dom Perignon so-called brut has 1.5% sugar. Brut Champagne was made to respond to English market demand for less sweet wines. One Champagne maker supposedly said that only brutes would like it that way, hence the name “brut” which has stuck around. Click the logo to visit Davis Bynum Wines. WineSmith owns no vineyards but Clark Smith has good long-standing relations with many growers. His website states that growing great grapes is a full time job so he is happy to let others do it. Everything WineSmith makes is experimental, says Clark. With the market the way it is, with people looking for something different, Clark is well positioned to provide the novelty that demanding consumers want. No New Oak for Clark Clark also owns no barrels that are less than 20 years old. The new oak adds too much oak flavor. That's when people can say that the wine tastes like wooden furniture. Words of wisdom from Clark: "Wine is fundamentally mysterious. Understanding wine is the booby prize." One of Clark's labels has content that can only be seen under a black light. It costs $75 so with the purchase they throw in a black like flashlight. Dan Berger wants to write a book on wine myths. It's complicated because there are PhDs who believe in myths. Since Clark knows the.chemistry, where Dan does not, they might have to collaborate on the book. Clark uses the technical term "out to lunch" to describe some examples of that. Dan is writing a book about American wine regions. There are great wines coming from states that were never known for wine, especially cold climate wines. Michigan is an example. Dan mentions Iowa too. Iowa also produces La Quercia prosciutto, which Clark says is excellent. Clark uggests we find a documentary film out there called Wine Diamonds, that tells the story of five American families that are producing interesting wine.

Dan Berger and Barry Herbst. Barry Herbst has brought Bottle Barn sparkling wines to California Wine Country with Steve Jaxon and Dan Berger today. Barry was on CWC on this episode last July 5, with Rosé wines available at Bottle Barn. He was also on last January 12 for this episode about low-alcohol wines at Bottle Barn. Dan Berger declares that Bottle Barn has a bigger selection at better prices than any store in the country and maybe the world. Champagne Champagne, as we know, is a protected name for French sparkling wine produced in that region. But great sparkling wines come from lots of other places and we will taste several today. Champagne is getting expensive compared to the others and there are great values from Spain, Italy and California. The first tasting is a Cava from Catalunya, the region around Barcelona, Spain. It is a very cool region that helps the wine maintain acidity. About 50% of the blend is a rare grape called Xarello. The brand name is Mercat and it is at Bottle Barn for $13.99. Dan says that he has tasted over 30 years of sparkling wines production from this region and they have consistently improved. Click the logo to visit our sponsor Bottle Barn online for the coolest bargains on wine, beer and spirits. Next, we go to Sharffenberger, located in Mendocino County, California. This is a sparkling Rosé that is a blend of different vintages. Dan says that kind of blending explains why a lot of champagne is not vintage dated. A lot of sparkling wines and Champagnes that are not vintage dated will be blends of more than one vintage. The word Cuvée just means a blend. The single-vintage sparkling wines are a lot more expensive. For example, Dom Perignon sells for $259 at Bottle Barn. Franciacorta Then they taste a wine from Franciacorta, in the province of Brescia, east of Milan in Lombardy. The ground it white and reflects light, so they grow the grapes up high where the reflections of light are not so strong. Franciacorta makes great sparkling wines, especially for the price. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, and check out their family-friendly New Year's Eve party! After that, they taste a French Champagne, La Salle. It is from a small family producer that is as good as the more expensive brands. Dan says that this one could benefit from 6 to 12 months in the bottle. In England they like to age their sparkling wines, where American people tend to drink theirs right away. $33.99 at Bottle Barn, and $50 at least anywhere else. The Schramsberg Blanc de Noirs is the next tasting. It is a 2020, but since you harvest grapes for sparkling wine in August, that was before the fires that year. That is how this wine avoided fire damage. Dan Berger says it has Dom Perignon quality at a price you can afford.

Tune in for a sparkling chat with this music icon.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS9:54 The thing that kept us going during the darker times was the wish and want to be successful. We made it through the 60s, the 70s and the 80s with great hit songs. Then we asked ourselves "What are we going to do now?" We decided then to tour around the world and go into markets that we usually wouldn't travel to. 15:00 About 10 years ago, while we were touring in France, our promoter mentioned he was working on a champagne inspired by Barry White and and one for the Bee Gees and asked me if I was interested. I first said no, because I wasn't sure if our fans would buy a bottle of champagne at our concerts. What I wanted to do was to be on the shelves, together with Dom Perignon, Cristal, Veuve Cliquot, etc. 22:30 The inspiration behind the song "Ladies Night" came from watching people walk in New York. The sound of their steps inspired its famous baseline and I came up with the concept and title by going out to clubs in those times.

What's up Bro's?! First things first. Go Birds. Eagles are 2-0. (I'm typing this after we recorded) But back to business, up first we are back with the Orange County Crew and the ladies are still on their girls trip. Vicki makes a surprise appearance and we see the Tres Amigas back together again. Tamra and Jenn end up getting into it again over the Ryan situation. It appears Tamra has been digging around a little for some dirt on Ryan. Or according to her, the dirt was given to her without asking... Emily and Heather are still not getting along as Emily points out some hypocritical moments. Meanwhile, Heather thinks that she's held to a higher standard than the rest of the group leading to a bit of a distance between the two. Shannon finally opens up ever so slightly about John and it doesn't sound great. And Tamra and Jenn have it out with one another at lunch as Jenn has finally reached her breaking point with Tamras nonsense. Then we're out in Salt Lake City where they are all heading out to Palm Springs (even though Angie K wasn't invited). Monica takes center stage in this episode as we get to learn more about her and her backstory. Her recent divorce has her financial status much different than it used to be, and she opens up about her insecurities with the other women in the group. Meredith and Lisa finally go on that walk together and it looks as though they may actually have found a way forward. Both women apologize for their part in the friendship falling apart and its refreshing to potentially see them make up. Heather and Whitney are on the make up train as well but their conversation doesn't instill nearly as much confidence as Lisa and Mer. At a double date, Whitney lets Angie K know about the trip to Palm Springs and it turns out Angie was not invited. Instead of not going, Whitney invites her as her plus one... Manchmal muss man sich seinem eigenen Alman stellen. Joko neigt etwa dazu, bei Produktbeschwerden ganz oben ins Organigramm einzusteigen: Kundenservice? Pfff. Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? TITLE:Luxury Brand Events with a French Twist. Ooh la la! (ft. Thomas Serrano | Founder and CEO, Exclamation Group)OPENING QUOTE:“It's just those different levels of emotion that we lay down on the timeline of the event. So, it's not only about planning, you know, the menu, the cocktail, the entertainment; it's planning those emotions that will create an emotional connection and will make guests remember the brands remember the events in a very special way. ” - Thomas Serrano.SUMMARY:Founder and CEO of Exclamation Group, an experiential agency dedicated to opulent brands like Bulgari, Dom Perignon, Swarovski, Van Cleef & Arpels, to name a few; Thomas Serrano, a cultured French gentleman, knows a thing or two about creating exquisite and memorable events for the haute-couture crowd. According to Serrano, it's about mapping out the emotional journey for the guests, laying down the different levels of emotion you wish to provoke on a timeline. And it's about creating seamless, extraordinary moments for people who have it all and have seen it all. It's all so ooh, la la.But the cool thing about Thomas is that the methods he uses to curate these one-of-a-kind, off-the-chart affairs are transferable to any event planner. He talks about the method and the steps, then shares the skinny on the fine detail. For example, he says... give your guests space. It says luxury, exclusivity, and privilege... And give them access to something that they would not ordinarily have access to. It's mind-blowing... And then connect it all to the story that embodies the brand. It becomes unforgettable.Speaking of stories, Thomas regales us with quite a few of his own. Including one story of his personal journey from Paris to New York. All of which is a perfect demonstration of producing nothing but the best events. C'est bon!GUEST BIO:Thomas Serrano began his career with experiential agencies in Paris. Determined not to feel sluggish, foggy and slow one single day more, Davinia committed to turning her life around one tiny change at a time. Bernard Arnault - znacie to nazwisko? Tamtejsza gospodarka złapała poważną zadyszkę, a kiedy Chiny mają katar, to reszta świata dostaje zapalenia płuc. Partnerem odcinka jest OANDA TMS Brokers.
Producent dóbr luksusowych LVMH właśnie został największą firmą Europy i pierwszą, której wartość przekroczyła pół biliona dolarów. Podobnie świetnie radzi sobie Hermes, a więc producent kultowej torebki Birkin. Luksus nie zna słowa "kryzys", a właśnie pomaga mu pandemia, a właściwie jej koniec w Chinach. Spragnieni zakupów bogaci Chińczycy właśnie ruszyli lekką ręką wydawać dziesiątki i setki tysięcy dolarów zaoszczędzone w lockdownach.

What did John the Baptist, Dom Perignon and Saint Vincent have in common when it comes to wine? What makes the vineyard of Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy so fascinating? Why should you consider visiting the wine region Santa Ynez in Santa Barbara County? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with Adam McHugh, author of Blood from Stone: A Memoir of How Wine Brought Me Back from the Dead. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks Giveaway Three of you will win a personally signed copy of Adam McHugh's terrific book, Blood from Stone: A Memoir of How Wine Brought Me Back from the Dead. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and tell me that you'd like to win a copy. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck! Highlights Why do French and American oak impart different notes? Historically, why were more Catholics than Protestants involved in winemaking? What makes the 100+ acres of Clos de Vougeot so interesting? Why was the wine négociant system created? Which major contributions did the Benedictine monk Dom Pérignon make to the wine world? How did John the Baptist become the patron saint of cellar masters? What's Adam's take on the ongoing debate between geologists and sommeliers? Why should you consider visiting the wine region Santa Ynez in Santa Barbara County? What are Adam's top tips for getting the most out of a visit to Santa Ynez? What was Adam's hope in writing Blood From Stone? Which unpopular wine belief does Adam hold? What's Adam's favourite wine book? Why is the Coravin Adam's favourite wine gadget? Which disastrous Shiraz wine pairing did Adam serve at a dinner party? What's the best way to pair a very tannic wine with food? Which Julia Child recipe is at the heart of Adam's current favourite food and wine pairing? How has John Steinbeck inspired Adam as a writer? What coffee message would Adam put on a billboard? What can you expect from Adam's book Blood From A Stone? Key Takeaways I loved how Adam wove in the stories of John the Baptist, Dom Perignon and Saint Vincent as they relate to wine. I agree with him that wine can be a spiritual thing apart from its religious associations. Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy is such a storied vineyard. I'm glad he included it in his book. The Santa Ynez wine region in Santa Barbara County is on my radar to visit next. It's incredible that over 80% of the wines from Santa Ynez are made by family-owned wineries that make less than 10,000 cases yearly. Welcome to December 31, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate memorable wines and forgettable songs. Nothing says celebration like a good champagne, and while the genuine article comes only from the Champagne region of France, there are plenty of good bubbly wines from California and Italy. If you've ever wondered why bottles of Dom Perignon fetch up to $50,000 a bottle, it's because Dom only produces wine during years when the grapes have reached top quality. That means that since they opened in 1921 they have only produced 36 vintages. If splurging at that price point is not your thing, just pop open a bottle of your favorite sparkling beverage. On National Champagne Day we toast to your health and good fortune and hope you'll remember to always drink responsibly. Auld Lang Syne is sometimes referred to as the most famous song that nobody knows, and that's not only because people have been drinking before they sing it. Written by Robert Burns, the phrase is Scottish and roughly translates to days gone by. Somewhere along the way, it was set to music and became a traditional Scottish song. So how did it come to be associated with New Years Eve? For that we can thank the famous bandleader Guy Lombardo. Beginning in the 1920s, he played the song on his New Years Eve radio show, and for the next 30 New Years after that. We thank you for joining us during 2022 and on New Year's Eve we welcome all that 2023 has to offer! I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. We pop it at weddings and pour it for the holidays, gift it to congratulate and sip it to celebrate—but, if we're being honest, Gastropod will seize any occasion to drink champagne. In the second episode of our two-part miniseries on the tastes of celebration, we tell the story of how this sparkling wine went from an unwelcome accident—winemakers considered fizz a flaw!—to a global brand associated with quality, luxury, celebrity, and, above all, fun. Along the way, we explore the science behind the bubbles, get to the bottom of the difference between prosecco, pét-nat, and Perrier-Jouët, and tell the stories of the original Dom Perignon and Veuve Cliquot. Join us now for all that, plus the answer to the question we all secretly wonder: Is champagne really worth the big bucks? Cheers! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Let's get fancy tonight, hire a string quartet, and grab a canape from the cocktail servers. We are talking about Dom Pérignon, that fanciest of Champagnes. Przed salonami Vuittona, Diora i Cartiera w Paryżu, Londynie i Berlinie stoją kolejki. A sprzedaż napędzają... młodzi, dwudziestokilkuletni Amerykanie, którzy wciąż mieszkają z rodzicami. Champagne is unquestionably the world's most glamorous drink and has been used for centuries to celebrate everything from weddings and birthdays to royal coronations. It was the drink of choice for formal gatherings in the Gilded Age, the Belle Epoque and Victorian England. But there's so much more to understanding champagne than just enjoying the bubbles and the fizz. Champagne has a long and often misrepresented history that combines serendipity, ingenuity and sheer marketing brilliance. (Hint: The monk Dom Perignon didn't invent it.)Join Carl and guest Don Spiro (whom listeners will remember from their recent show on absinthe) as they take a look at the full story. They correct some misconceptions about champagne's history, examine just what exactly it is, and discuss how it's been made and enjoyed over the centuries.
Donae Burston is a luxury wine & spirits leader with over 20 years of industry experience. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Donae achieved a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Mathematics from Clark Atlanta University in 1998. He concurrently completed a second degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech before beginning his career in the information technology sector, initially consulting on Healthcare Systems. In 2001, Donae entered the alcohol industry, working on the promotional side of several iconic brands in the US, before joining the luxury group LVMH. During his 10+ years with the company, he worked across brands such as Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Moet & Chandon, Belvedere Vodka, and Hennessy Cognac. While with LVMH, in 2011, Donae created the first-ever luxury champagne bar in a sports arena at American Airlines Arena during the Miami Heat's championship run. In 2016, Donae became the Regional Director of the Southeast US, Caribbean, and Latin America regions of Armand de Brignac Champagne. He was responsible for the brand's commercial and marketing goals in each territory. Throughout his career, Donae found that, in general, the wine industry was not embracing the multicultural consumer. He wanted to create a quality product inspired by his zest for life and travel that homed in on catering to the margin that had been overlooked, particularly when it came to rosé. With a commitment to creating an authentic and exceptional St. Tropez rosé and breaking tradition and convention by reimagining the luxury wine drinker and energizing the category, in summer 2019, La Fête du Rosé - a brand that speaks to all demographics - was born. The name "La Fête" translates to "the rosé party," one that everyone is invited. In 2021, the company introduced a limited-release white wine - La Fête du Blanc - which became a permanent addition to the portfolio in 2022. Under Donae's leadership, La Fête du Rosé was the fastest-growing luxury imported rosé label of 2021 and is now the #3 luxury imported rosé brand in the US, according to IRI. Since its inception, La Fête has donated a portion of the proceeds from every bottle sold to various programs that send underrepresented youth on unique travel experiences and organizations focused on creating opportunities for the BIPOC community in the wine and spirits industry. www.nopixafterdark.com Sponsors of NoPixAfterDarkPodcast Zeke's Coffee www.zekescoffee.com Maggies Farm www.maggiesfarm.com FoundStudio Shop www.foundstudioshop.com United Way Central Maryland https://uwcm.org Charm Craft City Mafia www.charmcitycraftmafia.com Siena Leigh https://www.sienaleigh.com Open Works https://www.openworksbmore.org Snug Books Baltimore https://www.snugbooks.com Baltimore Fiscal https://www.baltimorefiscal.com Pandora Box Boutique https://pandorasboxboutique.com CarVer Communications Group https://www.therealcarver.com

Fancy joining us as we break into the Fort Knox of wine?!It's an old mine and former munitions dump in the middle of the English countryside that now holds over 9 million bottles and £1bn+ of stock. It's one of the biggest such storage facilities in the world and one (whisky) bottle stored there recently sold for £1.2m.Only downside? Security is tight. And you have to climb up 157 steps to get back out. Good thing Peter was actually invited in - and had a 'sustaining' lunch before the journey back up into the real world (including Cheval Blanc 1949, Krug 1996, Domaine Fourrier Clos St Jacques 2005 and Coche-Dury Meursault Genevrières 2010). It's quite the adventure: something of a wine pilgrimage, which makes for a fascinating episode diving into professional wine storage, why some wines and people need it, wine investment...and of course an insight into how those very rare and special wines are tasting.Very much related to the last point, this episode also features the audio treat of Peter trying his best to make sense while the wrong side of multiple delicious glasses and 100 feet under the Wiltshire turf in cavernous tunnels stuffed with millions of bottles of the world's finest wines. It's worth the listen, even if solely for comedy value. All details from this episode, together with photos to help set the scene, are on our website: Show notes for Wine Blast S4 E2 - Inside the Fort Knox of Wine.We love to hear from you so please do get in touch via Instagram or Twitter. Rerun. Benedictine monk Dom Perignon is said to have discovered champagne on 4th August, 1693. 200 million bottles are now produced and sold every year. The sparkliness was originally considered a defect - because carbonated wine caused the fragile bottles of the era to burst. Until stronger glass was developed in the mid-19th century, mass-produced champagne was impossible to manufacture, so it gained a reputation as a high society tipple. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine the boredom of wine-tastings; explain how to make fake champagne; and reveal how the bombing of French vineyards, ironically, helped to save the industry...
