You know what they say, 'An apple a day, keeps the doctor away...' so for those of you with broken Contaxes, you better get rid of all your apples as the doctor is here! Okay, so maybe he hasn't quite gotten his PhD yet, but in this, the 41st episode of the Camerosity Podcast, we are happy to introduce you to Brandon Monroe, an aviation mechanics student who just so happens to really love the Zeiss-Ikon Contax rangefinders so much that he wanted to learn how to repair them himself.  Brandon reached out to other well known technicians who repair Contaxes like Henry Scherer and Mark Hansen and learned what he could from them.  For everything else, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work.  Tearing down several broken Contax rangefinders, and at least one that had been previously CLAd to see what was done, Brandon has recently become successful at full CLAs of both pre and postwar Contax IIs and IIIs.  Brandon has repaired several cameras for Paul and a few others, and according to Paul, the cameras are like new. Listen in as Brandon tells his story of how he got started and why he fell in love with Contax rangefinders.  He discusses differences between the pre and postwar shutters, what the shutters are made of, how the rangefinders work and how they're adjusted, who makes our favorite Contax lens adapters, using Contax lenses on Nikon rangefinders, plus a huge number of other things.  Mike can't help himself and goes into the history of the camera somewhat, explaining how the Contax I came to be, and what differences are between it and the later cameras. Joining us on this episode are returning guests Aidan Dean, Alex Dietrich, and first time callers Steve Wilcox and from all the way in Belgium, Eric Kaas Sluis, a self professed Contax addict who has one of the largest collections of working Contaxes and lenses in the world. In addition to repair of the Contax, we talk about what makes them special, who made the original Zeiss-Ikon Contax in 1926 (Hint: His name rhymes with 'Bagel'), postwar Jena Contaxes, and why you should consider a Kiev if you cannot afford a Contax.  Amazingly, the guys somehow manage to stay on topic for most of the show, but a small amount of time is spent on a few other cameras that we just can't stop talking about. As always, the topics we discuss on the Camerosity Podcast are influenced by you.  We would love to hear from more listeners, especially those who are new to shooting film or collecting cameras.  Please don't feel like you have to be an expert on a specific type of camera, or have the level of knowledge on par with other people on the show.  We LOVE people who are new to shooting and are interested in having an episode dedicated to people new to the hobby, so please don't consider your knowledge level to be a prerequisite for joining! The guys and I rarely know where each episode is going to go until it happens, so if you'd like to join us on a future episode, be sure to look out for our show announcements on our Camerosity Podcast Facebook page, and right here on mikeeckman.com.  We usually record every other Monday and announcements, along with the Zoom link are typically shared 2-3 days in advance. If you want to join us for our next episode, we will record Episode 42 on Monday, February 6th and we will talk American cameras like Argus, Clarus, Perfex, and many other brands you may or may not have heard of!  Be sure to stay tuned for the official announcement! If your pet ever ran away or got lost, one key tool that could help in reuniting you with your pet would be a microchip. These tiny devices, inserted beneath the pet's skin, store a unique number that is linked to your account. Once the chip is scanned and that number is retrieved, an animal care professional can contact you with details about your pet. Stephen and special guest host Alyssa talk with Steve Wilcox in today's episode. They discuss how microchips work, how they are placed and some of the privacy concerns related to microchips. Are you wanting to buy a home? What is an ARM Loan or Mortgage? What is the difference between 3-5-7-10 ARM LoansThe bank might have told you about adjustable-rate mortgages and how you should consider them because of the low-interest rate. An adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) is a type of mortgage in which the interest rate on the outstanding balance varies throughout the loan's lifetime. Initially, the interest rate is fixed on an adjustable-rate mortgage (similar to a fixed-rate mortgage), but after a specific period, it fluctuates. This can be lucrative in the beginning as the initial interest rates are typically lower than fixed rates, but the interest rate can skyrocket later, depending on the market. There are usually caps on how much the interest rate and payments can rise per year over the loan's lifetime. An ARM can be a good choice for a home buyer looking to pay their home off in the time period of the loan that is a fixed rate. ARM's track an index that determines the interest rate you'll pay. Adjustable-rate mortgages typically track the one-year Treasury bill or the Cost of Funds Index (COFI). In addition to the index rate, there is an additional margin added on top of that for your loan. For example, if the index is tracking at 2.6% and your ARM margin is 2%, your interest rate would be 4.6%. ARMs can be beneficial in certain situations, but the wide range and adjustable-rate can hurt a home buyer if they're not prepared to pay it. You also might be thinking that you can refinance at the end of the fixed rate. While this is possible, your mortgage will reset to the initial term (typically 30 years), and you'll have that five years of interest added on again. In this scenario, you'll likely end up paying much more than you would have with a fixed-rate mortgage. Bottom line: ARM (Adjustable-Rate Mortgage) - Offers a lucrative interest rate for the fixed period but is unpredictable after that. Fixed-rate mortgage - Offers a predictable payment and static interest rate over the lifetime of the loan. In this episode he talks about his lifelong involvement in charitable giving, inspired by his mother, and how he's adapted his style to religious nonprofit work.  He's also passed on his legacy of giving to his three sons, who now run a family foundation.   Host Liz Tinkham affectionately refers to Steve as the “compassionate hard-ass”.  His is an inspiring story of how to be very successful at work while not forgetting what's important - family and faith.   (01:40) Act 1: Stonehill College as a first generation college student (03:32) Carnegie Mellon creating and analyzing public policy (04:28) Think before you speak: lessons from the CIA (06:11) Act 2: Arthur Anderson and a mini computer can make history (09:23) Director of Technical services of the NYC Transit Authority (13:11) Back to consulting for communication (14:14) Extended family and the extent of its impact: there's always another place at the table (17:02) Covenant House: a charity for youth experiencing homelessness (17:58) Tithing with checks and wine (20:14) Making it work with teenage kids and traveling (21:17) Act 3: building a family foundation (21:40) When it's time to pivot (25:42) Bishop of the Archdiocese of Oakland and the start of Cristo Rey (30:59) The Compassionate Hard-Ass hard at work (31:28) Authority and power in a nonprofit, from the perspective of a nonreligious person in a religious organization (33:27) Advice to high-charging people to religion: get involved   Listeners can get in touch with Steve on LinkedIn or by email here.

STEVE WILCOX is a Venezuelan born actor who had early success in American Me. It was rap icon Tupac Shakur's favorite movie and he sampled one of Steve's lines in Death Around the Corner. Working on the film was a watershed experience that still keeps Steve pursuing his dream 25 years later. (36:35)        EPISODE NOTES: The 1992 film “American Me” was Edward James Olmos’ directorial debut. But the movie also marked the professional acting debut for STEVE WILCOX who played teenaged J.D., the white kid who becomes a member of a Chicano gang in 1950s East LA. William Forsythe was cast as the adult J.D. and Steve had to adopt some of Forsythe’s mannerisms and physical attributes. As Steve tells me in VENEZUELAN-AMERICAN ME, he was fitted with an unwieldy dental prosthetic that gave him an unintended lisp, which he had to learn to speak without. A few years later, Steve worked with rap icon Tupac Shakur in “Gang Related” who told him that he’d actually – unbeknownst to Steve -- sampled some of his dialogue from “American Me” on his track “Death Around the Corner.” Tupac promised to give Steve a copy of it the next time he saw him, but was shot and killed a few weeks later. Playing a white kid in a Latin culture came naturally to Steve. Born and raised in Venezuela to a Canadian father and a Venezuelan mother, Steve says he was always the whitest kid he knew. To make matters worse, his mother dressed him in nothing but white clothing (shoes and boots, too) for five years as part of a pact she’d made with patron saint Jose Gregorio Hernandez who, she believed, answered her prayers to save her young son who was dying of spinal meningitis. Steve is a survivor, and for 25 years has been a mostly-working Hollywood actor. Given his particular look (he’s been compared to Tom Waits, Nick Nolte and Ron Perlman) he often plays bad guys, which he loves to do. Thanks to his connections in LA’s growing Venezuelan artistic community, Steve has recently appeared in a number of Venezuelan movies, including “La Hora Cero” and “Libertador.” BTW: Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is a friend. The charismatic maestro used to call Steve “Gringo” but now has a new nickname for him: “Creepy.” And it has nothing to do with the kind of roles he plays.
