What happens when a small town Welsh girl travels the world and takes a photo that gets published in National Geographic? For Claire Thomas, it launched a career in global conflict and humanitarian photojournalism. In this episode, Claire takes us behind the images — into her life photographing trauma centers during the battle for Mosul, documenting the lives of the wives and mothers of ISIS fighters, and spending years embedded in the Middle East, covering war, migration, and survival with deep empathy. We also talk about her love of horses, how she finds balance in such intense photojournalistic work, what it's like to shoot from horseback across the Mongolian steppe, or the moment she realized a single photo could help save a child's life. This episode is raw, inspiring, honest — and yes, between the heavy topics, we also shared a few good laughs.
England held off a late France fightback to secure a fourth consecutive Grand Slam and a seventh straight title. Sara Orchard is joined by Kat Merchant, Katy Daley-McLean and Claire Thomas to dissect how England nearly let the title slip away. The team chat England's performance with questions around selection and how this England team would fair at the World Cup which is fast approaching. James Burridge catches up with scrum-half Natasha Hunt and how she is feeling after that narrow victory at Twickenham. There are also questions around the other end of the Six Nations table with Wales and Italy playing Sunday for the wooden spoon.
Lauren Jenkins is joined by Claire Thomas, Alex Cuthbert and Jonathan Davies as they look ahead to Wales' final match against Italy in the Women's Six Nations, and preview this weekend's URC round 16 fixtures.

Marcus Bleasdale has spent his life in places most of us would struggle to imagine, photographically documenting conflict zones and communities caught in the crossfire of politics and profit. In this conversation within The Photowalk show, Marcus talks about the responsibility of witnessing brutal truths, from child labour in the Democratic Republic of Congo to the mining of conflict minerals used in our phones and tech, and how his book The Unravelling, forces us to reckon with the uncomfortable fact that everyday convenience often comes at someone else's expense. The mailbag is back and in today's: Spike Boydell sends in a film link that had me properly thinking about connection. Jerilyn Owen shares how making a self-portrait is helping her learn acceptance. Samantha Ramsay finds something spiritual in photographing hands, while Greg Picone stumbles across a spooky landscape right behind his own backyard. Randy Bullerwell's been capturing carnival season in Aruba in a way that's anything but ordinary and Complaints Corner is open again… this time, it's a case of the wrong pants. Plus, a quick reminder: it's the final week for this month's One Word Assignment, set by Claire Thomas. In this episode of the Mindful Builder podcast, we sit down with Claire Thomas from Altereco for an engaging conversation that spans career transitions, personal challenges, and the intricacies of running a sustainable building design company.Bringing Unique Skills to the IndustryClaire's journey began in the UK, studying sports science, before relocating to Australia to live with her husband James. She worked as a technical rep in the footwear industry for many years before realising she wanted to try something new and joining her husband at Altereco.Transitioning from the footwear industry to an architectural design company was difficult. Claire admitted she didn't know the difference between a planning permit and a building permit at first. However, Claire's background in a completely different industry has provided her with unique skills that have greatly benefited Altereco. Her ability to communicate effectively and build relationships proved invaluable. Claire highlighted how these skills are sometimes overlooked but are essential in creating a positive work environment and nurturing client relationships. The Challenges of Working with a PartnerA lot of people think that working closely with your partner is a recipe for tension but Claire promises it's not that hard to manage! She shares how she and James can maintain a balance between their personal and professional lives. She mentioned the importance of setting boundaries and having open, honest conversations. They even sought professional guidance to better understand each other's working styles! The Emotional Side of BuildingClaire talks candidly about the emotional investment that comes with her job. She feels a massive responsibility when dealing with clients' biggest assets—their homes and life savings. This sense of responsibility sometimes manifests physically, showing just how deeply she cares about her clients' experiences. Balancing Stress and Self-CareTo manage the inevitable stress that comes with her role, Claire leans on regular exercise, specifically mountain biking, as a key coping mechanism. She highlights the importance of having activities that allow one to switch off mentally and physically. Additionally, Claire stresses the value of being open about one's struggles to maintain mental well-being, a practice she incorporates into her regular routines and interactions with her team and James.Budget vs. Brief: The Eternal StruggleOne of the more challenging aspects of Claire's job is discussing budget realities with clients. She is direct and honest from the get-go, making sure clients understand the financial scope of their projects early in the process. This level of honesty, though sometimes difficult, builds trust and sets realistic expectations. We hope this episode inspires you as much as it inspired us. Dogs Are Smarter Than People: Writing Life, Marriage and Motivation
This is obviously not the full transcript. You have to listen to hear the full weirdness, but . . . here's the core. How Do You Sustain a Career as an Author? It's a really good question, right? One, all of us authors are trying to figure out. Rise With Drew writes, "Creative careers are slippery. One-hit wonders abound, but fewer are enduring superstars,” Steven writes. “And this level of commitment requires not just originality but rather that ultimate expression of originality: the consistent reinvention of self. Again and again. “Long-haul creativity isn't about a first act or a second act. It's a third and fourth and fifth act. It's that ultimate impossible, the infinite game, where the goal is simply to keep on playing.” There's a woman over on the Creative Penn who gives a pretty long interview about author sustainability, pimping out her book--which may be one of the keys of of sustainability--who has been writing since 2014. Claire Thomas is her name. She's written books about this and uses a personality test (enneagram) to explain to writers their blocks. In the podcast she says, "In our industry, we have a crisis of people being stuck and trapped because they've limited their options. Their subconscious mind has limited their options because of the patterns that it's functioning in as a default. "So they can't always see an aligned path forward when the industry undergoes swift changes, which it does very frequently. So I can give you an example. "If you're an author who's what we call a type three, this is the achiever, then your core fear is lacking value or being worthless, and pretty much everything you do is to avoid confronting this fear or feeling like you lack value or are worthless, if you're three. "A pattern that almost always arises from this is the belief that they earn value through accomplishments and achievements. This can look like how many books they have in their catalog, how high their books rank after launch, and how many subscribers they have on their email list." So, when you look at your personality type, you can see what might be holding you back. What the old scripts are running through your head, how your complacency or peacekeeping tendencies might keep you from talking about your triumphs for marketing, or how your love for isolating research might keep you from actually putting words down. More on that in the audio. DOG TIP FOR LIFE Work through your blocks to advance and evolve. Channel your inner cat. Or inner duck. COOL EXERCISE Go figure out your Enneagram. See if it's blocking you. Do it for one of your characters that you're struggling with. At this week's Round Table, Kris, Collin, Kenisha, and Skyla spoke with Claire Thomas, attorney, consultant, professor and clinical director practicing immigration law and researching global migration, statelessness, human rights, and empowerment for women and girls facing poverty and gender-based violence. Claire recently returned from a Fulbright in Mexico, during which she interviewed asylum-seekers, government officials, and immigration experts to learn about and share cross-cultural best practices in asylum and refugee law. We talked about the challenges of immigration policy which, in Claire's words, is “a big jumbled mess” and which Claire's work focuses on the humanitarian side of. Much of today's immigration policy stems from treaties signed after the horrors of WWII and is predicated in very outdated language and concepts—many other countries are more modern and inclusive. A toxic blend of Misinformation, racism, and outdated laws interferes with progress. We have a true humanitarian crisis because the Mexican border has been closed to asylum seekers since March 2020, making it impossible for anyone to come through and forced those in peril to wait in dangerous Mexican border cities for years. We talked about the dangers of the “close the door behind you” mentality, gender based violence and the deadly absence of gender-based grounds for asylum in the US, what to do about ICE, the hugely disparate treatment of black and brown refugees, what and how the Biden administration is doing on immigration, and what can teens our age do to actually facilitate change in the short and long term. Most importantly, we spoke about how we can open the eyes of those l who have a misconstrued view of what the immigration process is and who immigrants are. We hope this podcast can be part of that process. Thank you for listening! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message

"I think it's valuable to dwell on the difficult stuff sometimes, and that this can actually be very productive and germinating in terms of writing." – Claire Thomas Rebecca Starford and Claire Thomas discuss their acclaimed 2021 novels with Declan Fry. Hailed as a gripping thriller and deft character study, Rebecca's The Imitator is the story of a female spy recruited into an elite MI5 counterintelligence unit during World War II. Named one of The Sydney Morning Herald's most anticipated books of the year, Claire's The Performance is a tightly woven portrayal of three women forever changed during a night at the theatre as bushfires burned nearby. Listen as these two talented authors touch on the joys of inhabiting their characters' heads, their shared need to make sense of the world through art and the growing societal pressure to adopt a false sense of positivity. Chaired by Kate Mildenhall. Two of 2021's most innovative and engrossing books have works of art at their heart. Claire Thomas's The Performance is set over a single theatrical performance, and uses the potent image of the trapped Winnie in Beckett's masterpiece Happy Days to explore the colliding but disparate lives of three women. Angela O'Keeffe's Night Blue is audaciously told from the perspective of our National Gallery's most famous acquisition, Jackson Pollock's Blue Poles, as it examines an artist's life and the eternal conundrum of great art that springs from monstrous creators.

Hear from two of the country’s most refreshingly distinct literary voices as they discuss their breakthrough novels which both conjure nuanced depictions of women’s interior lives. Meg Mason‘s Sorrow and Bliss is a bleakly funny coming-of-age confessional that has drawn comparisons to Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag and has been called ‘fresh and revelatory … sharp, racy and entertaining’ (The Saturday Paper). Claire Thomas‘ The Performance explores the fears and desires of three women attending a play in Melbourne as a bushfire encroaches, earning praise as ‘a project of living [that] is rendered with compassionate clarity’ (New York Times). From today, people will be able to move across the Auckland boundary if they are relocating permanently. That includes people who need to get to a hall of residence for tertiary study. Victoria University of Wellington students Claire Thomas and Pauline Abeleda have been stuck in Auckland since mid-August, having gone to visit family in what they expected would be just a two week long visit. Abeleda hasn't been able to work shifts at her retail job in Wellington, but stopped receiving the wage subsidy when Wellington moved down to the level 2 alert level. As soon as the government announced it would loosen its boundary rules for Auckland yesterday, they both jumped at the chance to buy tickets back to the capital. Thomas and Abeleda spoke to Corin Dann.

Within a month or so, Nicole's new podcast Books, Books, Books was up and underway featuring interviews with the best Australian and international writers about their new books that they could no longer promote or share live at book launches, writers festivals and other events. One of Nicole's first interviews was with Julia Baird about her inspiring book Phosphorescence. Julia's very personal and uplifting book about healing, hope and the solace of nature - and immersion in it – is absolutely one that's pitch perfect for the times, and has rapidly become a popular bestseller. Listen in and enjoy hearing from Nic as we chat about and chew on podcasting, why writers write and about some special authors and recent books that speak to and about the precariousness of things and the vulnerabilities of living with climate change, bushfires and COVID, loss and hope. Join us to hear about Claire Thomas's new novel The Performance and James Bradley's Ghost Species, hear practical tips about how to manage eco-anxiety and positively engage with friends and colleagues about climate action from Rebecca Huntley, author or the non-fiction book, How to Talk About Climate Change. In Episode 8 of Series 2 of The Rights Track, Claire Thomas, Deputy Director of Minority Rights Group, talks about upholding the rights of minority ethnic, linguistic and religious communities around the world. 0.00-6.07 Claire explains that MRG works with communities or groups rather than individuals who may be different because of the language they speak, their religion or their ethnicity. Further explanation of the areas of the world in which MRG works. Todd asks Claire what she makes of recent indications from the US and the UK that there might be some sort of a “roll back” in their commitment to international human rights. Claire outlines her concerns about what she sees as a ‘dramatic rise' in anti migrant, anti refugee attitudes and associated hate crime over the last year in a number of countries, all of which goes against what MRG stands for. Brief discussion of recent political events in The Netherlands and France, which saw a rise in support for the far right ahead of recent elections. 6.07-09.08 The sort of work that MRG does: advocating for minorities, working with refugees and migrants on the ground to capture evidence, and helping them speak for themselves locally, nationally and internationally at events such as Universal Periodic Reviews (UPRs). Claire mentions a major piece of work in Iraq where MRG is gathering information electronically as part of its efforts to protect vulnerable groups and more traditional ‘on the ground' work in South Asia to promote and protect religious freedoms. Todd asks at what point MRG pulls back from a community or country to let them manage issues themselves. 09.08 - 17.54 Claire and Todd discuss the challenges of identifying a route to success and following it. They talk about a log frame (logical framework) approach to activities designed to promote human rights. Claire points out the need for flexibility because of changing conditions and contexts. What success looks like - when does MRG know its work has had an impact? Claire explains that its not all about what MRG does itself, but how it might have influenced others e.g. a duty bearer to make a change so credit is inevitably shared. Claire explains how MRG approaches a new project by identifying what the big blocking factors are to realising rights. She explains how MRG tries to get to the discriminatory attitudes in people's heads as well as tackling discriminatory practices by changing laws. 17.54-22.00 Claire describes a street theatre programme in 7 countries to tackle racism. Further discussion about the challenges in evaluating the effectiveness of programmes like this. 22.00-end Todd asks Claire whether its possible to put the more extreme and hateful attitudes that have been unleashed in recent months back in their ‘Pandora's Box'. Claire thinks there has been a recent resurgence in the values of diversity but says it's not clear how it will be done or how long it will take.
