In a collaboration with the Bloomberg's Big Take podcast, we present a story on SpaceX's Starlink satellite program. It touts itself as a source of reliable internet in hard-to-reach places. But there are some countries where Starlink's services aren't licensed, or where the company can't do business because of US sanctions. And a Bloomberg investigation has found that Starlink kits are appearing in many of those markets anyway – with geopolitical consequences. Before we unpack that reporting, David, Max and Dana discuss new rules for selling Teslas, a tossed lawsuit and a report alleging that X has been profiting from selling data to governments and police departments, via a third-party data broker, even as it fights a lawsuit related to government surveillance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

China is one of the most important consumer, industrial, and raw materials markets in the world. They also happen to be a bad actor in terms of environmental practices and human rights. Companies looking to do business in China need to go in with their eyes wide open, prepared to handle a complicated set of decisions and PR maneuvers.  That is the backdrop for a very odd set of circumstances that played out at the 2023 China Automobile Forum in early July. Tesla was one of 16 EV companies - the only non-Chinese manufacturer, in fact - to sign a four point pledge that includes an agreement to adhere to “core socialist values.” In this episode of Dial P, Kelly Barner: Explains what happened in Shanghai earlier this month, why it happened, and why it only stayed in effect for 48 hours Considers the differences between Communism and Socialism and what they mean for companies attempting to do business in China Thinks about the geopolitical complexity associated with the significant potential for growth and revenue from Chinese consumers

Tatura's Bruce Gill (pictured) has long wanted to be as fossil fuel free as possible and his "new" (it's a 2018 model) Tesla takes him much closer to that goal. The research scientist came to Tatura decades ago to work on the Goulburn Valley's then-salinity problem and he now works on broader agriculture issues. Bruce has been pursuing the fossil-free lifestyle for a long time and the Tesla is the latest iteration of low-carbon emitting vehicles he has owned, and clearly the best. He has travelled to Brisbane and back and was not troubled in finding places to charge the car. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-mclean/message

Authenticity - Transforming Workplace Culture

In this episode we discuss Elon Musk and the recent middle of the night email he has sent all Twitter staff. At 2 a.m. on Wednesday November 16th, Musk sent an email to all Twitter employees telling them to be “extremely hardcore” and work “long hours at high intensity,” the Washington Post reported. All employees have to agree to this new workflow by 5pm Thursday – around 40 hours after the email was sent – or they will be fired and given three months of severance. Musks message said, his subject line was “a fork in the road”. While it is unclear how many employees had chosen to stay, the numbers certainly highlight reluctance of most to stay at a company where its owner has ruthlessly changed the culture to emphasise long hours at such an intense pace.Want to check out how Authentic your organisation is? Show #528   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.             Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   We have another PRODUCER of the podcast to join the gang it’s CRAIG VLADIMIROVS   HYUNDAI KIA BUILDS NATIONWIDE CHARGING NETWORK IN SOUTH KOREA "Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia) decided to prepare the ultra-fast charging network for upcoming new models in South Korea." says InsideEVs: "Through investment of 10 billion won ($8.5 million) Hyundai-Kia intends to install roughly 100 DC fast chargers rated for 350 kW in 20-30 locations. The South Korean media reports that the network reminds it of Tesla Supercharging, although Hyundai-Kia will keep the chargers open to all other models compatible with the CCS Combo 1 inlet."   https://insideevs.com/news/359565/hyundai-kia-nationwide-charging-network-south-korea/   NO COMPANY CAR TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SAYS UK GOVERNMENT In the UK: "The Government says that company car drivers choosing a pure electric vehicle will pay no benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax in 2020/21." reports FleetNews.co.uk: "for a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, company car drivers will be taxed at 0%, paying no BIK tax at all. Furthermore, the zero percentage rate is also extended to company car drivers in pure electric vehicles registered prior to April 6, 2020, who were already looking forward to a much reduced rate of 2% for 2020/21."   Let me explain BIK and why it's important.   Take a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus. The government put a value of £42,400 on it, which is the list price before incentives. The current BIK charge is 16%, so you take 16% of the list price of £6,784. Then you apply your tax band for your income tax, and you either pay 20% tax or 40% tax in England (Scotland slightly different).  Anyone earning over £50,000 pays 40% tax. So for those higher rate earners buying a Tesla Model 3, the individual had to pay 40% of £6,784, so £2,714. That for a Model 3, if you go to a Model 3 Long Range Performance, and chose that as your company car, an individual would be £6,307 a year. There are also additional costs for our National Insurance employer contributions.   https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/fleet-industry-news/2019/07/09/no-company-car-tax-on-electric-vehicles-says-government   TESLA TAKES 28% SHARE OF WESTERN EUROPE BEV MARKET IN H1 2019 "In the first half of the year, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla brand took a solid first place in the Western Europe BEV market." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Since the introduction of the Model 3 in Europe, Tesla has become the top choice for those buying all-electric cars. Tesla's position is nowhere near the dominance seen in the U.S., but according to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), in the first half of 2019, Tesla was the #1 BEV OEM with 44,900 new registrations and 28% market share in Western Europe. 37,300 new registrations of the Model 3 allowed for an easy first place among all BEVs (and plug-ins in general)."   https://insideevs.com/news/359636/tesla-28-western-europe-bev-market-h1-2019/   SERES STOPS US LAUNCH OF ELECTRIC SUV SF5 "The Chinese EV startup Seres, formerly known as SF Motors, has fired 90 employees at its Silicon Valley base as well as officially putting off the US launch of their electric SUV SF5." says a report by Electrive: "An unnamed employee said that before the cuts, around 300 people worked at the factory and that cuts affect all areas of the business, and people have been let go from “sales, marketing, IT, HR, legal, operations, and design”. The company itself was not available for comment."   https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/12/seres-stops-us-launch-of-electric-suv-sf5/   HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S LIVEWIRE IS MORE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE THAN I’LL EVER NEED Sean O'Kane for The Verge just said: "There’s not a lot I can tell you from the 20 minutes I spent riding Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle this weekend at the Formula E race in Brooklyn, New York. One thing I can tell you, though, is it’s certainly more electric motorcycle than I’d ever need. Every time I turned on to one of the long straightaways of Formula E’s Brooklyn circuit, I raked the throttle and was greeted with giddying acceleration. What sets the LiveWire apart is that acceleration almost never quits. As 50, 60, 70 miles per hour ticked by on the small digital display between the handlebars, the motorcycle never let up. If there had been more room to run, I likely would have cracked 100 miles per hour before thinking about whether I really wanted to go that fast."   https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/14/20692388/harley-davidson-livewire-electric-motorcycle-test-drive   QUESTION OF THE WEEK First of all, props to Mikhail Grozovski who sent me a screenshot of him asking exactly this question on Twitter. He says: "You stole my question ;-)"   DAVID ALLEN The very fact that people are now asking this question demonstrates that EVs are making progress in becoming mainstream. The question doesn’t even occur to folks until they are presented with the contradictory situation of watching EV race cars hauled to a track by diesel/petrol trucks. Once the question is asked, pressure will then mount on the racing teams to replace fossil burning transport/support vehicles with EVs. Tesla ran into the same problem with its mobile service fleet, and is now phasing out the gas-powered vans with modified S/X vehicles. That said, this highlights the need for heavy electric vans, medium trucks, and of course, the Tesla semi.   Leszek Grzyl Yes,we should consider what we do while we promote EVs. We should be restricting our unnecessary journeys and consider travelling by trains if we need to. Train travel across Europe needs to by simplified so that we can get to Mediterranean from UK or North countries without flying. If popularity stints are designed to improve ev awareness and involve driving ev they should continue, as they will bring lower co2 emissions as a result.   RICH FOWLER Yes, these events are more important in terms of PR for EVs than the minimal detrimental effects they have on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. I say this because these events are outliers. If these events were smack in the middle of the bell curve of EV activities, then I would say they should be restricted. But since they're uncommon, and therefore designed to attract attention to EVs, I think the harm they do can be considered an investment in getting more people interested in converting their middle of the curve day to day fossil gobblers into EVs. The only thing that could change my mind is the Fully Charged Live discussion on how tires are a fossil-based pollution nightmare. If these sorts of outlier activities generated significantly large amounts of tire-based pollution, then I might change my mind, but I'd have to see some data first.   RENE SCHNEIDER The main problem about fuel burnt is, that it was questioned in several news around the formula-e approximately like „the need 200 diesel trucks to carry ..., so it is only a pseudo event about energy saving.“   Really relevant is moving the public: The review of the Formula-e in Zurich 2018 states that 160’000 visitors came; 71% with public transport, which runs nearly with 100% electricity here in Switzerland. Moving 160’000 people around is the big number, not a few 100 trucks to carry goods.   Dafydd Cheung No doubt in my mind, that racing is a big advertising opportunity. The greater the number of people who are exposed to the idea of EVs, either as race vehicles or private/public transport the better. What is then also needed, are EV load carriers and that can tow, with a decent range. Only then will the EV racers be transported to venues by other EVs.   DAVID NYE Yes we should burn some fossil fuels where necessary for anything which actively promotes EV’s, as they have a long way to go to become the rule rather than the exception. The day will come when the vast majority of people drive sustainable vehicles running from clean power, but we still have a very long way to go to get there, and a lot of people with whom we need to get the message across with respect to EV’s and sustainable transport in general.     IAN SEAR EVs should be making as much noise (not literally) and doing as many fun stunts as possible to get a buzz going, I feel we are at the Gladwellian tipping point for EV technology with the mainstream media reporting quite a few positive EV news stories and the much criticised BBC having some very fair EV articles   DEREK LYON Anything that helps sell “the electric solution” is fair game.  Some people will only care about coolness, speed or economics,  (IE not saving the world.) What is great is “the electric solution” answers cool/fun & economics. People just don’t know that yet.  Showing off those qualities in a race & building overpowered e-cars is awesome and speeds acceptance.  Creating some sort of purity rules are short sighted and will slow electric adoption.     Send me your EV questions: hello@evnewsdaily or use social media. Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com   Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Wednesday 1st August edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   Wednesday 1st August will see the Q2 Earnings Call for Tesla after the closing bell.   TESLA TAKES 45% OF PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CARS SALES IN U.S. Mark Kane for Inside EV's: "In June, Tesla sold some 11,362 electric cars in the U.S., according to IEVs estimations, and that’s enough to achieve a new record share for the plug-in market. Believe it or not 45% of all plug-in cars sold last month (25,179) were Tesla cars, and that’s when you include plug-in hybrids. Limiting it to just BEVs (14,612), Tesla dominated the market at nearly 78%." The great unknown, for now, is Model 3 sales. How much did production slip back from 5000 a week after they hit that target in the final week of Q2? How quickly have they got back to 5,000? Elon immediately announced 6,000 being the next milestone, are they on target for that? In the first 6 months of the 2018 an estimated 124,687 plug-in electric vehicles have been sold in the U.S. With 6 months of the year remaining, if you put a 20,000 a month number on the Model 3, which would be revised down to allow for factory shutdown but revised up for increased ramp on the S curve even so that would be 120,000 Model 3’s out the gate in H2 2018.   TESLA EXPLORES BUILDING GIGAFACTORY IN EUROPE: WALL STREET JOURNAL "Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) is in talks with authorities in Germany and the Netherlands to build its first major European factory, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing officials involved in the matter." writes Sonam Rai for Reuters: "Tesla already has an engineering division in Pruem, Germany, that is about 30 kms from Belgium and about 100 kms from the French border." All future Gigafactories such as this one the one announced for China, Gigafactory 3, will be used to both produce the batteries and cars too.   FIRST COMPLETE FF 91 BODY-IN-WHITE "Faraday Future announced today that the first complete body-in-white for the FF91 has arrived at the Hanford factory." That's effectively the first completed structural frame without anything bolted on. Senior VP of Manufacturing for FF, Dag Reckhorn, said: "There is no question that this team and our suppliers have faced many significant challenges in getting FF 91 to this point, and even slightly ahead of schedule. This is really a huge accomplishment over these past two years. All while focusing on the true luxury and quality of the final product." The order book for FF 91 early users – aka "FF Futurists" – has been open since the start of 2018 and first deliveries are due starting in December of this year through the middle of 2019.   BMW TO BUILD 1 BILLION EURO ELECTRIC CAR FACTORY IN HUNGARY "BMW said it is investing 1 billion euros (US$1.17 bln) in a new car factory in Debrecen, Hungary capable of building electric cars. The plant will have a production capacity of 150,000 cars a year and be able to make both electric and combustion engined vehicles. BMW said it will help the carmaker to expand its manufacturing capacity in Europe, where 45 percent of its cars are sold."   UPS TO TEST ELECTRIC TRUCK WITH THOR UPS today announced a collaboration with Thor Trucks to develop and test a fully-electric class 6 delivery truck in Los Angeles, California. The truck is expected to be ready for deployment later this year. The Thor electric delivery truck will have a driving range of approximately 100 miles powered by a Thor-designed and built battery that will be lightweight, durable and allow long-range driving distances. For six months, UPS will test the medium-duty electric delivery truck as part of its fleet. Testing will include off-road evaluation to address durability, battery capacity, technical integration, engineering and any items found during on-road testing. Depending on the success of the deployment, UPS may make additional purchases of the electric vehicle. Using its “Rolling Laboratory” approach, UPS deploys about 9,300 low-emission vehicles to determine which technology works best in each route configuration. This includes all-electric, hybrid electric, hydraulic hybrid, ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and propane.   https://pressroom.ups.com/pressroom/ContentDetailsViewer.page?ConceptType=PressReleases   MERCEDES PRESENTS HYDROGEN FUEL CELL SPRINTER CONCEPT Daimler are moving forward with electrifying not just their cars but vans and trucks too. "Mercedes will start testing prototypes of a fuel-cell powered Sprinter, called F-Cell. Like the GLC with the same suffix, it draws electricity from either the hydrogen stored in cylindrical tanks in the underbody, or a small battery pack that can be charged externally." according to Fleet Europe.com: "That makes this Sprinter F-Cell the first ‘plug in hybrid’ zero-emission van ever, combining electricity produced in the fuel cell with current stored in the battery pack. There is a problem, however: the lack of hydrogen fuelling infrastructure. That is why Mercedes adds a battery pack – albeit a relatively small one. It extends the range by a mere 30 km at best – but that could suffice to get to the next hydrogen pump."   TOYOTA PLOTS THE FUTURE OF ZERO-EMISSION HAULAGE "Toyota has strengthened its pursuit of zero-emission freight transport with the unveiling of a new, second-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy-duty truck that can cover 300 miles on a full tank. The new Beta vehicle was presented to media and industry leaders at the Center for Automotive Research in Michigan" "The Alpha truck had a 36.3-tonne gross combined weight capacity and a driving range of more than 200 miles on a hydrogen fill-up. Two Mirai fuel cell stacks and a 12kW/h battery supported an output of more than 670bhp and 1,796Nm of torque. The new Project Portal Beta maintains these power and torque figures but with an extended range and improvements in other key performance metrics."   UPDATE FROM WORKHORSE EV TRUCK TESTS Workhorse Group today provided an update on milestones achieved during its ongoing real-world pilot testing of its N-GEN all-electric vehicles: The N-GEN has demonstrated a fuel efficiency, as expressed in miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe), that averages 40MPGe for its 450 cubic foot electric van, and 75MPGe for its 200 cubic foot electric van, representing up to a 500% improvement versus conventional gas delivery vans. More than 100,000 packages delivered by Workhorse-employed drivers and delivery associates, offering invaluable insights to optimize the N-GEN production vehicle design for last-mile delivery workers.   HARLEY DAVIDSON ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE COMING 2019 "The Harley-Davidson electric motorcycle has been a long time coming. First announced as Project LiveWire back in 2014, the bike has gone through some design changes as well as becoming only one of the electric bikes the company plans to release over the next few years. Finally, though, it looks as if the LiveWire will be available next year." reports Engadget: "The LiveWire is being hailed as "the first in a broad, no-clutch 'twist and go' portfolio of electric two-wheelers designed to establish the company as the leader in the electrification of the sport"   KINGFISHER TO INSTALL BATTERY STORAGE AT B&Q DISTRIBUTION CENTRE "Home improvement retail giant Kingfisher has announced (30 July) that it will install energy storage facilities at one of its B&Q distribution centres" - for translation, B&Q is Home Depot. Currently, around 35% of the power generated by the solar panels at the site is exported back to the grid as surplus, but the energy storage facility, which is set to be completed in September, will enable B&Q to store up to 40% of the energy generated by the PV panels and release it back to the building during periods of peak pricing or overnight. In addition to storing energy for use inside the centre, the battery installation will also power new electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the car park of the centre.       COMMUNITY Emails   You can listen to all previous 197 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.
