We talked about French, English, Welsh, where are the Scots?Yes, where are the Scots? This is when they come to England and they are called the Stuarts. 斯图亚特王朝, that's in early 17th century?Yeah, 1603. James I of England and James VI of Scotland was the Scottish king, and he ruled both England and Scotland under one crownJust let me add in one thing. I think if you want to know more about English history or British history, you really just need to remember a few names, but you need to remember the numbers. Yes. Because it's just the repetition of a few names but with a number attached to it.Pretty much. Okay. So wasn't that the time for Guy Fawkes, like Guy Fawkes night, Guy Fawkes? In one of our earlier episodes, one of our very early episodes we talked about Guy Fawkes and the gunpowder plot. And James I was the man, the King that Guy Fawkes tried to kill. In the gunpowder plot. Yes. Now James I didn't die in the gunpowder plot and eventually his son Charles I came to the throne. Now Charles I fought in the English Civil War. He fought against parliament, parliament won, and King Charles I had his head cut off. I think similar to Chinese history, all these fight for throne and all these fight for jockeying for power, pretty bloody. It was. Even as King or Emperor, you're not exempt. But the difference is that after Charles I was executed, England became a republic. So before it was a monarch. Yeah. Now it became a republic, but you still have the monarch, though. That's because Oliver Cromwell ruled the Commonwealth when we had no king. He became the lord protector; and to be honest, they were very unpopular, they were so unpopular that they actually asked Charles II, Charles I's son to come back and take the throne. 所以就把君主制又搬回来了. And this is called the restoration. 就是查理二世后面又复辟了, came back to the throne, restoration. It was towards the end of the Stuarts. In1707, Scotland and England became united in the Act of Union. So that is when we started to call the country Great Britain. In 1707, before it was just England, Scotland, separate countries. And this meant that England Scotland became pretty much the same country but there are lots and lots of differences in the law, the customs, and we won't get going to it this time, it can get a bit complicated. I mean we can use a separate episode to talk about that. Yes. After the Stuarts came the Hanoverians .汉诺威王朝 So the Hanoverians actually came from Hanover in Germany in 1714. They were the ones that couldn't really speak much English in the beginning. That's right, George I couldn't speak much English and was dependent on the first Prime Minister Robert Walpole. We talked about that, that's where Prime Minister我们之前跟安澜录过一集, 讲英国政府的, 就讲为什么会有首相, 最开始的首相主要就是因为这个国王不会讲英文, he is like a translator. So around this time, later, you had George III, George III was the last King of America. Oh, and then they became independent.美国独立之前, 最后的一个王就是乔治三世. Yes. And eventually he became ill and was thought to be mad. And his son George, later George IV became the Prince Regent. 乔治三世的儿子也就是乔治四世, 也就是后面的Prince Regent摄政王. 我们专门录了另外一集节目, 就专门来讲荒唐的Prince Regent的. Yeah, that's a really interesting episode. And later the throne goes to Queen Victoria in 1837. And started the Victorian Age, 然后就到了维多利亚时代了. 维多利亚时代是1837年开始的, 1837, so Queen Victoria still belong to the Hanoverians. Technically yes. But because she lived for so long and also she wasn't one of the rulers of Hanover because she was not allowed to, because she was a woman. Then we started to basically the Hanoverians were phased out. I see, I think then you're kind of fast forwarding to the Royal House now which is the Windsors. 然后就到了温莎王朝, 现在还是温莎, 对吧?Yes. Now this gets a little bit complicated because they weren't called
Hi and welcome in! This is our second episode and that's so weird to think about. Today we chat about the histories of a few different countries, Scotland, England and Ireland to name them. Royal Childhood and Child Kingship: Boy Kings in England, Scotland, France and Germany, c. 1050–1262 (Cambridge University Press, 2022) refines adult-focused perspectives on medieval rulership. Dr. Emily Joan Ward exposes the problematic nature of working from the assumption that kingship equated to adult power. Children's participation and political assent could be important facets of the day-to-day activities of rule, as this study shows through an examination of royal charters, oaths to young boys, cross-kingdom diplomacy and coronation. The first comparative and thematic study of child rulership in this period, Dr. Ward analyses eight case studies across northwestern Europe from c.1050 to c.1250. Dr. Ward stresses innovations and adaptations in royal government, questions the exaggeration of political disorder under a boy king, and suggests a ruler's childhood posed far less of a challenge than their adolescence and youth. Uniting social, cultural and political historical methodologies, Dr. Ward unveils how wider societal changes between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries altered children's lived experiences of royal rule and modified how people thought about child kingship. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Where's best to invest in the UK? Our hotspot episodes always go down a treat and are usually one of our most popular episodes of the year, but we think this one might be even better... If you think Rob & Rob don't cover Scotland and Wales enough, today is your lucky day - as they'll be revealing the top three places to invest in England, Scotland and Wales. So, if you're planning your next investment, you might want to start looking into these locations... In the news You might've guessed what news story Rob & Rob would be chatting about today, which is of course, we've got a new PM! This is the third new Prime Minister the UK has seen in the last six years without a general election, so what have the guys got to say about it and how this will impact investors? Hub Extra We've been ramping up our YouTube channel here at Property Hub, so of course Rob & Rob have been spending more time on YouTube and searching for some of the platform's best content! So, it's only right that they recommend another cracking channel to you. Elizabeth Champion is an arms and armour historian specialising in high medieval Round Table tournaments and the Merlin legends. She's also a historical fencer, co-founder of Stratford Swords and an ex-cage fighter. In our conversation we discuss what was a Round Table Tournament. Is it to do with King Arthur, or the arrangement of the tables, or both? If you have come across anything to do with Round Tables in your reading, if you think you might know something, check if it's in Elizabeth's appendix here: https://swordschool.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/Appendix-Round-Tables-of-England-Scotland-and-Wales-1230-1330-E.Champion-Final.pdf If it's already there, Elizabeth already knows about it. And if it isn't there, send it to me and I'll pass it on to her. Let's crowdsource this and get to the bottom of it! Elizabeth tells us about her cage fighting days, and the injury she sustained that led to fibromyalgia and chronic pain. She also has autism and ADHD, and is able to give us some useful advice for fellow instructors and practitioners to help make our clubs as inclusive and supportive as possible. As well as all that, listen to this episode for top tips like why you need to put a sock on the end of a stick, how to make an axe safe to carry around the streets using just a brown paper bag, how to bear to watch terrible sword fights in films, and how many Dyson vacuum cleaners a cuirass is worth. We're discussing local elections held across England, Scotland and Wales last week, which saw heavy losses for the governing Conservatives and gains for the centre-left opposition parties. In Scotland, the SNP remained dominant and Labour returned to second place, and in Wales Labour scored a major victory as Plaid Cymru strengthened its hold over its heartlands.
Hear my exclusive chat with musician Andy Crofts from the Paul Weller Band just hours ahead of their support slot with Madness at London's Royal Albert Hall and days before they head out on tour across England & Scotland. We also chat about the beautiful abstract painting that he has created, in light of the crisis in Ukraine, and the auction to raise money for War Child. Entitled, The Resistance, the piece is painted on a 1.5m x 1m framed canvas using acrylic and draws on the Ukrainian flag as inspiration. Growing up as an only child in Northampton, Andy was drawn into his own imagination and has also been painting and creating art his whole life. Now, the musician has set up an online auction for ‘The Resistance' and is encouraging art lovers who connect with the piece to throw their support behind it. All proceeds will go to War Child's work with children affected by recent events in Ukraine. Find out more at paulwellerfanpodcast.com/warchild-auction

The England-Scotland football match is the oldest fixture in international football, and its fiercest rivalry – and this week's Alex Salmond Show comes from Wembley Stadium. Friday's showdown has England as firm favourites, but in the early days of the beautiful game, it was Scotland who were the dominant side with Andrew Watson, the world's first black international footballer, leading his Scotland team to a 6-1 triumph. Alex interviews England legends John Barnes and Mark Walters, football historian Llew Walker, former Scotland women's captain Ifeoma Dieke, and top pundit Jim Spence about football – and the politics of England against Scotland.
Tomorrow, England play oldest rivals Scotland at Wembley in their European Championships group game. We dug into the Big Interview archives and unearthed the recollections of three men who engaged in two famous Euros encounters between the Auld Enemies at the old Wembley in the 1990s.One of Darren Anderton's career highs occurred in June 1996 when England defeated the Scots 2-0. He set up Paul Gascoigne for his memorable goal with a superb pass. Darren tells us about the incredible feeling of that summer in England. For a Scottish perspective, we first hear from Gary McAllister, who featured in the '96 match's pivotal moment. With the score at 1-0, David Seaman saved Gary's penalty. Moments later, Darren picked out Gazza. Sheer agony.Three years later, Scotland reclaimed pride in the second leg of a European Championships play-off qualifier. They trailed 2-0 from the Hampden match and would ultimately go out, but not without bloodying English noses with a magnificent 1-0 Wembley victory. The scorer and star of the show was Don Hutchison, and we hear from him last.Scotland fans and England fans, whet your appetite with this special preview episode of the Big Interview.GrahamSubscribe to The Big Interview YouTube channel See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Whatever the triumphalist G7 headlines, the “Sausage War” fiasco left Global Britain looking as shifty, isolated and untrustworthy as its Prime Minister. How will the intractable Northern Ireland Protocol issue shake out? Plus unlocking gets put back (to nobody's surprise), birth pangs for new regimes in Israel and Northern Ireland, and what will Friday's England-Scotland fixture in the Euros mean for both countries' nationalist leaders? Alex Andreou lays it all out. • “The EU will create some sort of fudge on Northern Ireland where it gets 99% of what it wants. And Britain will claim that as a victory.”• “The sceptics think that ‘learning to live with COVID' means going back to exactly the way things were before. And it doesn't.”• “Football is the only occasion where it is universally okay to be nationalist.” Presented and produced by Andrew Harrison. In this podcast we're walking down the aisle with a couple who fought like cat and dog for years, but are now about to be joined in union. The Act of Union came into force in 1707 and England and Scotland were finally brought together by the pen and not the sword. The independent parliaments of Scotland & England were united and a prosperous new beginning was promised, but as the Act that would legally bring them together was signed the bells of St Gilles' Cathedral, on Edinburgh's royal mile, rang out with the mournful lament, ‘Why am I so sad on this my wedding day?'To help support this podcast and get exclusive access to new videos packed with history and current affairs every week sign up to Neil Oliver on Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/neiloliverThe series Instagram account is – Neil Oliver Love Letter See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We could have called this week's episode of The Impact Sessions Podcast - "How to Run a Successful Manufacturing Business Without Setting Foot In The Premises for Over a Year"! On this episode, we meet both Neil Matthews, Managing Director and Chris Shanks, Sales Manager of Irvine Springs, a high-performance springs manufacturer based, not surprisingly in Irvine in Ayrshire, Scotland. Well, that's where the business (and Chris) is based, but Managing Director Neil is based in Redditch, in the West Midlands of England. That's over a 5 hour drive and 300 miles away...... Since the global pandemic hit, and since the UK has had an ever-changing set of restrictions, many of which differed between England & Scotland, it has simply not been possible for Neil to be on-site, so Chris has had to take on the local mantle - or has he? Chris has also worked predominantly from home throughout the pandemic, and yet Irvine Springs has not only survived, but has come through and started 2021 in particular like a train. Are there lessons here for others? On another great Impact Sessions Podcast, we discuss, amongst other things; How Irvine Springs developed a sales and marketing approach and action plan during tight restrictions that allowed them to come out fighting in 2021. What being part of a bigger business group (Irvine Springs is an Indutrade business) has brought to the table in these challenging times? Managing and leading remotely. Creating a culture of trust and "can do". Lessons learnt. What the future holds for a UK Manufacturer and why embracing the likes of "Sustainability Development Goals" is a key to future success. And much more...... This was the first Podcast that either Neil or Chris had recorded and they were great! Give it a watch or listen for some inspiring content and conversation. Feedback as always is most welcome. A self-described “messy drinker” from the start, Julia grew up in the middle of nowhere on the England/Scotland border and had her first taste of alcohol around 14 years old. While she often worried about alcoholism and whether or not she was drinking too much, she easily calmed her fears and assured herself she was alright when she watched those around her drinking the same way she did. By the time she turned 40, Julia was living in a big loop of drinking, hangovers, and generally getting in her own way all the time. Since quitting drinking, she has gone from being convinced living without alcohol was going to be a boring, grey half-life without any friends or fun to writing a book about her journey and feeling safe and secure with the absence of alcohol as a rock underneath her. In this bonus episode of "Trees A Crowd", David Oakes looks into the world of wildlife crime and discusses the benefits of one of the largest planned community buyouts the country has ever seen. Kevin Cumming, the Langholm Initiative’s project leader, and Gavin Graham, a local resident of Langholm Moor, speak about their hopes to bring 10,500 acres (about 5,600 football pitches) of moorland, just north of Gretna Green, just north of the England-Scotland border, into community ownership. Incorporating peatland restoration, ancient woodland preservation and the increase of wildlife biodiversity, they hope to turn this area of grouse moorland into the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve. David also speaks with Mark Avery about why he, Chris Packham and Ruth Tingay founded their non-profit organisation, "Wild Justice", to uphold and to challenge existing legislation in order to help make initiatives like that at Langholm possible. For further information on this and other episodes, visit: http://www.treesacrowd.fm/langholm-moor/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Joel Carash has been a trial attorney for over 50 years and when he’s not in the courtroom, he’s on the road in his 1927 Bentley 3 Liter that he acquired over 22 years ago. He’s put over 40,000 miles on that special car of which over 26,000 miles have been in rallies and tours all over the world. I had the honor of spending a day with Joel in his car during the La Jolla Concours Tour last spring and what a special day that was for me. Joel was the Bentley Driver’s Club Chairman, Golden Gate Region and has toured in his 3 Litre Bentley in Switzerland, South Africa, New Zealand, Austria, Italy, France, England Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, and Western USA. His car has also been on the lawn of many Concours events including the La Jolla Concours and Ironstone Concours d’Elegance. On his 16th birthday, Joel got his student pilot’s certificate and then his driver’s license telling you a bit about his passion for speed.
I thought I'd start today's show off with a quote by Beverley Nichols from his book, Sunlight on the Lawn: “Why do insurance companies, when they want to describe an act of God, invariably pick on something which sounds much more like an act of the Devil? One would think that God was exclusively concerned in making hurricanes, smallpox, thunderbolts, and dry rot. They seem to forget that He also manufactures rainbows, apple-blossom, and Siamese kittens. However, that is, perhaps, a diversion.” This quote by Nichols came to mind when I heard the wondrous story about the little tomato plant that had sprouted on a piling by the Brooklyn Bridge. It made the Nightly News after the story was first published by the New York Times on Wednesday along with a photo taken by a passerby, Matthew Frey. Paddle-boarding between Pier 1 and 2 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Frey saw the leaves first. His incredible image of a lone tomato plant growing straight up with no supports and with one perfectly red little tomato was heartwarming. It reminded me of the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree but with only one red ornament hanging proudly in the middle of the plant. Frey, who is 54, told the times: “I’m used to seeing things grow here, but nothing as special as that... Things like that just make me happy.” Beverley Nichols would have loved seeing the little tomato plant that could. To him, it would have been heaven sent - a little gift to us all from above. Brevities #OTD On this day in 1513, James IV of Scotland, along with other Flowers of the Forest, were killed in the battle of Flodden. The Scottish army led by James, was taking advantage of Henry VIII's absence in France but they were resoundingly crushed by an army organized by Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's 1st wife. It was the largest battle ever fought between England & Scotland, and it was a devastating defeat for the Scots who remembered the pain of an estimated 12,000 dead sons of Scotland in an old Scottish folksong called “The Flowers of the Forest.” There are many variations of the lyrics that have surfaced over the years. One of the oldest verses ends this way: "'The Flowers of the Forest that fought at the foremost, The prime of the land are cold in the clay'" In 1765, the socialite Alison Cockburn wrote her own lyrics to the Flowers of the Forest. Here's the first verse: I've seen the smiling Of fortune beguiling, I've tasted her pleasures And felt her decay; Sweet is her blessing, And kind her caressing, But now they are fled And fled far away. #OTD Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist and the incomparable botanical illustrator Georg Dionysius Ehret who died on this day in 1770. Ehret was born in Heidelberg, Germany to Ferdinand Christian Ehret, who was a gardener and also had a talent for drawing. He taught his son both skills- gardening and drawing - before he died. Ehret made his way to Regensburg. There, he met an apothecary who hired him to draw of specimens from his herbarium and garden. Ehret earnestly took on the job; drawing over 500 pieces in one year. Taking advantage of his young employee, the apothecary fired Ehret and told him he should have completed 1,000 drawings and was fired. It was basically his way of avoiding paying Ehret. After this dreadful experience, Ehret made his way to England and worked at the major botanical gardens - Including Chelsea Physic. Isaac Rand, the first director of the Chelsea Physic Garden in London, told Ehret to paint the rare plants in the garden. The uniqueness of the specimens added to the demand for Ehret's work. As a result, Ehret was on friendly terms with the plant collectors and naturalists of his time. Chelsea was formative professionally and personally for Ehret; He married the head gardener's sister-in-law, Susanna Kennet. In The Art of Botanical Illustration, Wilfrid Blunt noted that, “By the middle of the century he had become a popular figure in London society: the highest nobility in England clamored to receive instruction from him,” Indeed, the wealthiest woman in England, Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, (the Duchess of Portland) gladly retained Ehret as a drawing instructor. Struck by the luminescence of his work, and ultimately she would buy over 300 of his paintings. In 1737, Ehret was hired to draw by Sir Charles Wager, First Lord of the Admiralty. In August of that year, Wagner's personal garden is where Ehret first observed the Magnolia grandiflora flowering. The bloom was so inspiring that Ehret walked for an hour each way, from Chelsea to Wagner's house (in Fulham), to see and sketch every stage of the Magnolia grandiflora; from bud to full flower. Ehret's work provided the world with the first Magnolia to be illustrated in England. Beyond his work in England, Ehret traveled throughout Europe in pursuit of his craft. He met Linnaeus in Holland when he was visiting the botanical garden in Leiden. Linnaeus taught Ehret exactly how he wanted plants to be dissected and drawn. By this time, Ehret felt that his drawings were already aligned with Linnaeus, but the calibration didn't hurt; Ehret's work made it possible for Linnaeus to show the differences between plants for his books. When Linnaeus released his catalog of rare plants, "Hortus Cliffortianus," in 1737, it featured 20 meticulous plates made by Ehret. As a result of partnering with Linnaeus, Ehret understood plant structure on a level that rivaled most botanists. Ehret's style of drawing is referred to as the Linnaean style. Ehret's father could have never predicted the impact of teaching his son both gardening and drawing; but the two skills had come together in Ehret in a very special way. One expert wrote that, "[Ehret] was the greatest artist illustrator that Linnaeus had." Today, Ehret's work is difficult to source. Given the rarity of an Ehret drawing, they are expensive to acquire; pieces generally start around $1k (if you can find one.) Just this year, the NYBG organized an exhibit called, "Georg Ehret: The Greatest Botanical Artist of the 1700s.” They featured 48 Ehret watercolors and engravings. #OTD Today is the birthday of James Arnold who was born on this day in 1781 and who was the namesake for Harvard's Arnold Arboretum. The Arnold Arboretum was the very first arboretum in the United States. Arnold was born to a Quaker family in Providence Rhode, Island. In 1807, Arnold married Sarah Rotch. Had Arnold not married Sarah, there would have probably never been an Arnold Arboretum. Sarah's father was part of a wealthy whaling family. Through his marriage to Sarah, Arnold eventually became a partner in his father-in-law's business. Arnold used his wealth to buy an 11-acre estate. There he built a mansion and installed beautiful gardens and lawns. The property was so stunning, that the Arnolds opened their gardens to the public on Sundays. It was a rare opportunity. The Unitarian minister, William Potter, called the Arnold estate, "a home the most conspicuous among all our homes for culture, for hospitality, for charity." John Quincy Adams was a guest of the Arnolds in 1835 and 1843. When Arnold died in 1868, he had outlived both his wife and daughter. As part of his will, he left $100,000 in the hands of threetrustees: Francis Parker, John James Dixwell, and George Emerson. Emerson and Dixwell were essential to the founding of the Arboretum because they personally knew Asa Gray at Harvard and they also knew that Harvard wanted a Botanic Garden. When the arrangements for the arboretum were finally settled, the instructions were to collect every kind of tree and shrub that would grow outdoors in Massachusetts. In 1873, Charles Sprague Sargent was hired to be the Arnold Arboretum director - a position he would hold for over four decades. His vision combined with the stability provided by his long leadership, established a solid foundation for the Arnold Arboretum. With the gift from James Arnold, the Arboretum had the means; and with the leadership of Sargent, it had the expertise. Both were needed to create the world-class arboretum we enjoy today. Unearthed Words This week I'm going to do a special tribute to the author Beverley Nichols, who was born on this day in 1898. Nichols is remembered for his writing and his love of gardening and cats. Nichols wrote over 60 books - but he is best remembered for his gardening books. In 1932, Nichol's wrote Down the Garden Path. It became an instant best seller on both sides of the Atlantic. In the book, Nichols wrote about his 1928 purchase of a weekend retreat; a thatched cottage in the village of Glatton. Nichols knew nothing about gardening when he bought the cottage, so he shared every discovery and disaster in his books. Based on the positive response to his first book, Nichols wrote two more books on his Glatton experiences. The second book was “A Thatched Roof” (released in 1933) and the third was “A Village in a Valley” (released in 1934). The books are referred to as “The Glatton Trilogy” or “The Allways Chronicles.” Here are some excerpts from Nichol's first book, Down the Garden Path: “...a cyclamen that looks like a flight of butterflies, frozen for a single, exquisite moment in the white heart of Time...” “It was not till I experimented with seeds plucked straight from a growing plant that I had my first success...the first thrill of creation...the first taste of blood. This, surely, must be akin to the pride of paternity...indeed, many soured bachelors would wager that it must be almost as wonderful to see the first tiny crinkled leaves of one's first plant as to see the tiny crinkled face of one's first child.” “I had never ‘taken a cutting’ before… .Do you not realize that the whole thing is miraculous? It is exactly as though you were to cut off your wife’s leg, stick it in the lawn, and be greeted on the following day by an entirely new woman, sprung from the leg, advancing across the lawn to meet you.” Today's book recommendation: The Proven Winners Garden Book by Ruth Rogers Clausen and Thomas Christopher This book is the ultimate gardening guide for all reader levels. It is super easy to read with excellent, clear instructions. Proven Winners is known as the #1 Plant Brand - and just like their quality plants, this book does not disappoint. In this book you get three awesome things. First, Garden Plans. But, not just any garden plan; Simple Garden Plans. Plans for attracting pollinators, plans for creating the most fragrant garden, plans for an entertaining garden, and so on. Second, Clausen and Christopher have put together dozens of recipes for beautiful containers. Just like a cookbook, these recipes are proven and they are geared toward providing curb appeal, color, texture and pizzazz to everything from small spaces to the average home lot. Finally, this guide offers really helpful lessons on how to buy the best plants and also on maintenance; the aspect of gardening so many struggle with. If you are a new gardener, this book will be your bible for getting started in the right way, maximizing your effort, avoiding hours of research on plants and design; helping you achieve stunning results in a single season. Today's Garden Chore Start saving seeds and make cuttings of the plants you want to increase for next year. Focus on your top performers and sentimental favorites in order to cultivate even better stock next year. Stay active in your garden now - don't leave the best of this year's garden to history. Something Sweet Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart On this day in 1903, the Akron Beacon Journal out of Akron, Ohio announced Carnation Day. Here's what it said: "The Anniversary of President McKinley's Death Will be Noted by the Wearing of His Favorite Flower by Akron Citizens. Next Monday will be the second anniversary of the death of President McKinley, and has been called "Red Carnation day," in honor of his favorite flower. President McKinley was shot by Leon Czolgosz, in the Temple of Music at the Buffalo exposition, September 6, 1901. The shooting occurred late in the afternoon and inside of an hour, every man, woman, and child within reach of the telegraph instrument heard the sorrowful news, and were sending up prayers for the recovery of the president. After the shooting, President McKinley was taken to the home of John G. Milburn, president of the exposition company, where he lingered; while hopeful and then depressing bulletins were issued from his bedside, until finally on September 14, he passed from life. Last year the president's favorite flower was worn by hundreds in this city, and it is expected that next Monday will see nearly every one wearing the flower that usually adorned the lapel of the third martyr president." Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."
Show #528 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. We have another PRODUCER of the podcast to join the gang it’s CRAIG VLADIMIROVS HYUNDAI KIA BUILDS NATIONWIDE CHARGING NETWORK IN SOUTH KOREA "Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia) decided to prepare the ultra-fast charging network for upcoming new models in South Korea." says InsideEVs: "Through investment of 10 billion won ($8.5 million) Hyundai-Kia intends to install roughly 100 DC fast chargers rated for 350 kW in 20-30 locations. The South Korean media reports that the network reminds it of Tesla Supercharging, although Hyundai-Kia will keep the chargers open to all other models compatible with the CCS Combo 1 inlet." https://insideevs.com/news/359565/hyundai-kia-nationwide-charging-network-south-korea/ NO COMPANY CAR TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SAYS UK GOVERNMENT In the UK: "The Government says that company car drivers choosing a pure electric vehicle will pay no benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax in 2020/21." reports FleetNews.co.uk: "for a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, company car drivers will be taxed at 0%, paying no BIK tax at all. Furthermore, the zero percentage rate is also extended to company car drivers in pure electric vehicles registered prior to April 6, 2020, who were already looking forward to a much reduced rate of 2% for 2020/21." Let me explain BIK and why it's important. Take a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus. The government put a value of £42,400 on it, which is the list price before incentives. The current BIK charge is 16%, so you take 16% of the list price of £6,784. Then you apply your tax band for your income tax, and you either pay 20% tax or 40% tax in England (Scotland slightly different). Anyone earning over £50,000 pays 40% tax. So for those higher rate earners buying a Tesla Model 3, the individual had to pay 40% of £6,784, so £2,714. That for a Model 3, if you go to a Model 3 Long Range Performance, and chose that as your company car, an individual would be £6,307 a year. There are also additional costs for our National Insurance employer contributions. https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/fleet-industry-news/2019/07/09/no-company-car-tax-on-electric-vehicles-says-government TESLA TAKES 28% SHARE OF WESTERN EUROPE BEV MARKET IN H1 2019 "In the first half of the year, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla brand took a solid first place in the Western Europe BEV market." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Since the introduction of the Model 3 in Europe, Tesla has become the top choice for those buying all-electric cars. Tesla's position is nowhere near the dominance seen in the U.S., but according to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), in the first half of 2019, Tesla was the #1 BEV OEM with 44,900 new registrations and 28% market share in Western Europe. 37,300 new registrations of the Model 3 allowed for an easy first place among all BEVs (and plug-ins in general)." https://insideevs.com/news/359636/tesla-28-western-europe-bev-market-h1-2019/ SERES STOPS US LAUNCH OF ELECTRIC SUV SF5 "The Chinese EV startup Seres, formerly known as SF Motors, has fired 90 employees at its Silicon Valley base as well as officially putting off the US launch of their electric SUV SF5." says a report by Electrive: "An unnamed employee said that before the cuts, around 300 people worked at the factory and that cuts affect all areas of the business, and people have been let go from “sales, marketing, IT, HR, legal, operations, and design”. The company itself was not available for comment." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/12/seres-stops-us-launch-of-electric-suv-sf5/ HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S LIVEWIRE IS MORE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE THAN I’LL EVER NEED Sean O'Kane for The Verge just said: "There’s not a lot I can tell you from the 20 minutes I spent riding Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle this weekend at the Formula E race in Brooklyn, New York. One thing I can tell you, though, is it’s certainly more electric motorcycle than I’d ever need. Every time I turned on to one of the long straightaways of Formula E’s Brooklyn circuit, I raked the throttle and was greeted with giddying acceleration. What sets the LiveWire apart is that acceleration almost never quits. As 50, 60, 70 miles per hour ticked by on the small digital display between the handlebars, the motorcycle never let up. If there had been more room to run, I likely would have cracked 100 miles per hour before thinking about whether I really wanted to go that fast." https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/14/20692388/harley-davidson-livewire-electric-motorcycle-test-drive QUESTION OF THE WEEK First of all, props to Mikhail Grozovski who sent me a screenshot of him asking exactly this question on Twitter. He says: "You stole my question ;-)" DAVID ALLEN The very fact that people are now asking this question demonstrates that EVs are making progress in becoming mainstream. The question doesn’t even occur to folks until they are presented with the contradictory situation of watching EV race cars hauled to a track by diesel/petrol trucks. Once the question is asked, pressure will then mount on the racing teams to replace fossil burning transport/support vehicles with EVs. Tesla ran into the same problem with its mobile service fleet, and is now phasing out the gas-powered vans with modified S/X vehicles. That said, this highlights the need for heavy electric vans, medium trucks, and of course, the Tesla semi. Leszek Grzyl Yes,we should consider what we do while we promote EVs. We should be restricting our unnecessary journeys and consider travelling by trains if we need to. Train travel across Europe needs to by simplified so that we can get to Mediterranean from UK or North countries without flying. If popularity stints are designed to improve ev awareness and involve driving ev they should continue, as they will bring lower co2 emissions as a result. RICH FOWLER Yes, these events are more important in terms of PR for EVs than the minimal detrimental effects they have on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. I say this because these events are outliers. If these events were smack in the middle of the bell curve of EV activities, then I would say they should be restricted. But since they're uncommon, and therefore designed to attract attention to EVs, I think the harm they do can be considered an investment in getting more people interested in converting their middle of the curve day to day fossil gobblers into EVs. The only thing that could change my mind is the Fully Charged Live discussion on how tires are a fossil-based pollution nightmare. If these sorts of outlier activities generated significantly large amounts of tire-based pollution, then I might change my mind, but I'd have to see some data first. RENE SCHNEIDER The main problem about fuel burnt is, that it was questioned in several news around the formula-e approximately like „the need 200 diesel trucks to carry ..., so it is only a pseudo event about energy saving.“ Really relevant is moving the public: The review of the Formula-e in Zurich 2018 states that 160’000 visitors came; 71% with public transport, which runs nearly with 100% electricity here in Switzerland. Moving 160’000 people around is the big number, not a few 100 trucks to carry goods. Dafydd Cheung No doubt in my mind, that racing is a big advertising opportunity. The greater the number of people who are exposed to the idea of EVs, either as race vehicles or private/public transport the better. What is then also needed, are EV load carriers and that can tow, with a decent range. Only then will the EV racers be transported to venues by other EVs. DAVID NYE Yes we should burn some fossil fuels where necessary for anything which actively promotes EV’s, as they have a long way to go to become the rule rather than the exception. The day will come when the vast majority of people drive sustainable vehicles running from clean power, but we still have a very long way to go to get there, and a lot of people with whom we need to get the message across with respect to EV’s and sustainable transport in general. IAN SEAR EVs should be making as much noise (not literally) and doing as many fun stunts as possible to get a buzz going, I feel we are at the Gladwellian tipping point for EV technology with the mainstream media reporting quite a few positive EV news stories and the much criticised BBC having some very fair EV articles DEREK LYON Anything that helps sell “the electric solution” is fair game. Some people will only care about coolness, speed or economics, (IE not saving the world.) What is great is “the electric solution” answers cool/fun & economics. People just don’t know that yet. Showing off those qualities in a race & building overpowered e-cars is awesome and speeds acceptance. Creating some sort of purity rules are short sighted and will slow electric adoption. International football is back! There could be very exciting times ahead for the home nations aside from poor Northern Ireland, who have a draw Michael O’Neill called “very cruel”. England have an exciting crop of players coming through, Scotland look as strong as they have in years and Wales could do well if Ryan Giggs has got time to be around and coach them. Away from the international stage we have news of a Dickie Borthwick TV appearance, an email section with a jealousy-inspiring spend and the tantalising prospect of the first ever Order of the Ramble Empire…This show is sponsored by bet365Search ‘Football Ramble’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@thefootballramble.com***Please take the time to rate and review us on iTunes or wherever you get your pods. Host Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com has good news for American Family Farmers about trade opportunities in England, Scotland and Ireland, due to The President's new trade deals. Next, Doug welcomes Lucille Benoit https://keepthecows.com/. Few have had the milk stool in the barn that she's been privileged to have for more than 30 years. She has known good cows, bad ones, clean ones and messy ones, the ones who are the best and brightest and the ones who have died from incurable diseases. In addition to working on dairy farms, Lucille has been an award-winning journalist working for New England newspapers telling the stories of the real struggles of farmers. She is author of a new book, "Come, Bos," that contains stories based on the people and animals she's met and loved in her more than 30 years working with Dairy cows. Finally Doug opines about the state of farming in China.
In which I spill the news on my trip to the U.K. this summer, as well as working with Kevin Spacey on GORE, a film shooting in Rome.
This week on Podcasting Smarter, Jen talks to Graham Duke of the Rex Factor Podcast. Rex Factor is a light-hearted podcast reviewing all the kings and queens of England & Scotland. On each episode, Graham and Ali determine if the monarch has the mark of greatness, known as the Rex Factor! It all started with a pub conversation and a friendly debate about great monarchs. That conversation is now a weekly, award winning, themed podcast with over a million downloads. Graham shares with us how they created a community as well as financial support for the show through their creative crowd funding efforts. Podcasting Smarter Tips from Rex Factor: Use your crowdfunding reward levels to create community. Rex Factor patrons become members of the special Privy Council and get access to premium episodes. Your fans will want to financially support your show and you can do more for them with their funding. Have fun with your audience. Rex Factor top level patrons get to commission an episode which becomes the premium content available only to the Privy Council. They started an "insider" hashtag that fans use that references an episode about a monarch with a less than memorable mark in history. #RememberAedMake sure you have good audio quality from the beginning.
