In this podcast, Mama C. (Nola Curtis) picks up where she left off in Part 1, talking about finding confidence and a sense of self-worth through music and family. Papa C. (Maestro Curtis) jumps in to express his admiration for his wife. Then we throw it over to the kids. First, introductions. Zahara (16), Nile (15), Isis (14), Kiki (13), and Phoenix (11 as of Tuesday). Nile talks about how the band evolved over time. The kids had their own band (The C-Notes) and mom and dad had a separate band. Zahara got started in music during her time at Everett Middle School. But as that faded out, she picked up instruments lying around the house and asked her siblings to join her. The C-Notes were born. When it came time for mom and dad to join forces with the kids, Papa C. tells us that they didn't want the spotlight to ever be on just one member, stressing the importance of family and the group dynamic. At this point in the podcast, Erin Lim (Part 1 / Part 2) of Bitch Talk Podcast takes over hosting. We start off talking about the kids' fascination with physics. They each take a turn explaining how they got interested and what application of science pertains to their individual interests. Then Erin asks the family to talk about the judges and host of America's Got Talent, the show on which the family is currently competing. We end the episode by talking about the family's "special sauce." There has been so much in the news about how the pandemic is setting women back, as they disproportionately take on more of the home-schooling burden. But no one is talking about the positive impact that Covid can bring to working women (or really anyone who wants to stand out.) Covid in many ways has shaken up the traditional, BS work environment. In this week's episode they give three actionable tips to stand out and get ahead during Covid. In this week's catch-up between Erin Hatzikostas and Nicole Licata Grant, they start by talking about Erin's TV debut. Nicole also discusses her recent blood drive and getting new eyebrows. Then Erin asks Nicole to give her authentic view on LinkedIn Learning. With a recent surge in "authenticity" as a buzzword across LinkedIn, Erin and Nicole discuss the effects they think it will have on people's view of the term, and how it can be both beneficial and damaging to the movement b Cause is trying to catalyze. Erin discusses being on TV - on Zoom - to talk about how Covid has disproportionately impacted moms. She talks about the behind-the-scenes of TV, how to pitch, how to get ready for the screen - and how it's all about making it happen, and not just waiting for a chance opportunity. Nicole has been a hot mess, forgetting to wear deodorant and eating pizza in the shower (although that last one doesn't sound like too bad an idea.) Erin moves the conversation toward something slightly more tangible at the end: her three tips for taking advantage of the Covid situation as a working mom. 1: Networking. Don't just sit back, take advantage, reach out. Have a mutually beneficial conversation. 2: Include your children in your work. Explain your work to them or let them watch a call you're on. They might not know it's impacting them, but it will shape them as they grow. 3: Exploit your Authenticity! (duh!) "My media person always says 'eyes and lips'...but I can't find the right lipstick, so I just put 6 of them on." "Covid has disproportionately impacted moms." "I'm walking into the shower while eating pizza." "My shower just rains beer." "Covid has brought out so many of my worst qualities." "He gave me permission to eat whatever I wanted - thank you, Weird Al." "I feel like people came here for tangible stuff, so maybe we should try for that." Exposing your authentic self can be hard, especially at work. But is it even harder for people (especially women) of color? La-Toya Hackney joins the b Cause "couch" to talk about the "thoughtful fearlessness" she used to help her go from being a self-proclaimed nerd from North Phili to becoming the Senior Vice President for a global 500 company. La-Toya shares her journey, including the four very powerful questions she uses to evaluate whether it's time for change or not. "You own your career", she says. And she shows you she's done just that for her own. Erin Hatzikostas meets with her friend La-Toya HAckney, for a discussion on discrimination, determination, and La-Toya's journey in life so far. With an undergraduate degree from Stanford and a Law degree from Harvard, and now entering a job as SVP, General Council and Secretary for Saint-Gobain, La-Toya is a source of authentic inspiration for us all. Erin introduces La-Toya, her accomplishments, and how they met. Then Erin asks her to describe who young La-Toya was and what she was like. She tells us she was a nerd before it was cool to be a nerd, an only child raised by a single mom, and a Philly girl through and through. Wanting to take a non-traditional path in life, La-Toya planned to overcome the assumptions people might have about her by having a laser focus on her goals - becoming a lawyer and having an education from the top schools in the country. Erin asks La-Toya what it was like to attend Stanford and what she got out of that education. While at Stanford she also did a semester at Howard, and another semester studying at Oxford (all of this by 18 years-old!) La-Toya shares some calming advice that her mom shared with her about being a black woman getting ready to head out into the world. Erin asks La-Toya to share some advice on what she would say to other young, disadvantaged people today who may not be able to get an Ivy League education. LA-Toya would give you the same advice she's giving her daughter: go where you'll feel most nurtured. Not everyone wants or will go to an Ivy League college, so find the right choice for you. La-Toya then discusses what resources she's giving her daughter to cope with discrimination in the world. She talks about how her daughter's perspective however is different than that of La-Toya's. She's hopeful that her daughter, and other women of color, will have to face less adversity than she did. La-Toya lets us in on her four questions she asks herself when she is accessing her career. Am I learning? Am I growing? Am I contributing? Do I still like the people? If she answer is no to any of these questions, then she knows she has to make an adjustment or change. Erin reflects on when and why people may be saying "no" to these questions, and her own experiences on when some of the answers to hose questions were certainly "no" for her. Erin asks about La-Toya's husband, how they maintain a marriage and co=parenting as they both work in very demanding jobs and share difficult experiences. Do you want big things for your life? Do you yearn to make a major pivot...with your career, your marriage, your friendships, your economic status? Whatever it is, know that it's essentially like a rebirth. You must go through some really tough stuff first. It might get uncomfortable. It might get messy. But the beautiful life on the other end is so worth it! Erin Hatzikostas and Nicole Licata Grant catch up this week on so many things (well, as usual). They first reminisce about the time Nicole went to Mardi Gras and all she thought about that, and remembers, was her well-planned potty break plan. Erin also talks about her plans for their upcoming cruise (which ends up being right in the middle of the Coronavirus craziness. Good news: she and her family are doing a-ok.) Erin asks Nicole about her recent trip to Hampshire, where Nicole helps to create a donor base for a community-based project focusing on system change and organic growth. Nicole discusses her Friday troubles - getting asked big questions and being given more work late on a Friday, and the good and the bad ways to deal with that. They talk about her challenges at work and the fact that life gets really frickin' touch (like a birth through the old vagina canal) before it gets beautiful. Nicole talks about a dinner she had with some of New York's most interesting and eccentric Designers. As she becomes "Nickole" Carraway watching Gatsby having one of his infamous parties. But this time there's...Sperm Ornaments? Erin talks about meeting a coaching client, but she's sabotaged between a parking mete and a food delivery truck. So after (somehow) finding a second space she decides to walk, but this parking garage is actually a labyrinth, and Erin forgot to bring her ball of yarn. (Oh, and her glorious coaching input on someone giving up swearing for lent...) So what are you giving up for Lent? Nicole has some ideas on how to approach it and why, and how it's changed over the course of history. Then Erin and Nicole both discuss what they might give up, or change, for lent, and they both have some interesting ideas for this year. We end with finding your 1%, a conversation on how to surround yourself with the right kind of people to bring out the best in both of you. Erin and her fellow activists feel that the older generations are failing young people and it's more important than ever to speak up and have your voice heard as a young person. She connects with Helena Gualinga, a 17 year old striker who grew up deep in the Amazon rainforest as part of the Sarayaku community. Then Erin also goes to Scottish parliament to meet First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to discuss her group’s demands and find out what's being done to ensure Scotland becomes carbon neutral. With April's global climate strike cancelled, Erin and her fellow activists in Scotland have to take drastic action.

He’s says they are agents for change and that they are going to overturn the status quo. The cult’s ritual will tear away the veil and allow the outer gods into our world. Kelly Street was joined this week by lawyer Erin Gerstenzang, a trial attorney with a law practice in Atlanta, Georgia. She provides concierge-level service to clients facing drug and alcohol-related offenses. In addition to running her boutique criminal defense law practice in Atlanta, Georgia, Erin Gerstenzang is dedicated to helping other attorneys succeed in their practices. She is a regular speaker at CLE events across the country and helps lawyers understand legal ethics in a technology-enabled world. She also lectures on women mentoring women, design-thinking for law firms, and using social media to build a legal brand. Erin Gerstanzang has been public speaking since before she had a trial and has legal in her blood as a second generation lawyer in a family full of lawyers. Speaking has allowed Erin to introduce herself to new attorneys, gaining referrals and making a national name for herself and her firm. Erin speaks about everything from blood testing and criminal defense issues to women and diversity in the legal practice. Her perspective on public speaking is that it is a reputation builder. You can showcase expertise, being helpful, and teaching other attorneys to do their job better. Erin gained traction in legal speaking by discussing legal ethics and has focused recently on social media, including in her talk at Clio 2018 with Kim Bennett. Speaking tips: Don't be boring. Present real tips, information, and advice. Less is more for your slides- your slides shouldn't be your presentation. Don't present sitting down. It's weird. Show your personality in speaking and in lawyering. Refer to yourself 2-3 times during your presentation, (listen to hear why) Branding your practice: Step outside the lawyer box. You'll attract the kind of clients you want if you can create a strong brand. Improving your public speaking: Get comfortable on the stage by filming your talks and watching them to identify your crutches and fine-tune your talks. Creative Live - public speaking courses Vanessa Van Edwards - hand gestures Ted Talks - speakers show their hands Start off with an embarrassing story to create a connection with the audience, instead of wasting time thanking the audience. The first 30 seconds are vital to your talk. Watching yourself speak requires an act of kindness. Watch with the understanding that you will develop a tough skin and get better over time. Do lawyers only want to hear from lawyers? Kelly says yes, Erin says no. The legal world has a lot of learning and growth to do but is making strides to be open to non-legal experts for noon-legal topics. Then Erin shares her thoughts on paying for speakers- to get quality content, legal organizations should consider paying for speakers. You get A-Level speakers when you are willing to pay for it.
Erin and Hannah continue their Never Seen series with Mean Girls—a film never seen by either. After watching this 2004 film for the first time, conversation begins with gut reactions, favorite lines, and memorable scenes (some quite cringeworthy!). Then Erin and Hannah hash out the messages that Mean Girls tells. How have these messages shaped our narratives around social interactions? Or are these merely reflective of society? Key to the discussion is what makes us who we are.
This week, Kathleen tells us about the science behind stalking. What is illegal stalking, and how is it different from ‘courting’ behavior? What motivates stalkers? What is the impact of stalking on the victim? And who among the Mind on Crime ladies stalked a celebrity as a teenager? Then Erin tells us about a stalking case that led to legal changes to the psychology profession, and Natalie tells us about one of the first ever cyberstalking cases.
How could someone confess to a crime they didn't commit? Turns out it's easier-and more common- than you think. Natalie explains how manipulative interrogation techniques, stress, suggestible personalities, sleep deprivation and false memories can coerce admissions of guilt from almost anyone. Then Erin describes the devastating consequences a false confession had in the infamous case of the West Memphis Three, and Kathleen tells the tale of a woman so desperate to escape an abusive relationship she turned herself in for a heinous murder.
The nostalgia bug hits again with Kaedi to discuss sleepover games & Oregon Trail. Then Erin wants to know why people like to watch oyesters being schucked live on Facebook. Wait, what's that? This episode pulls back the curtain on the making of the feature film Freedom Writers, written and directed by Richard LaGravenese and starring Hilary Swank. First, original Freedom Writer Tanya Payne reflects on what it was like to see her experience, her words, represented onscreen in the movie. Then Erin shares her conversation with writer/director Richard LaGravenese, recorded in New York City. Erin’s lifelong dream was to make a feature length film, and she realized she could combine her two passions by making a film about the amazing women she was meeting. So fueled by coffee, a drive to change the world, and a feminist agenda, Erin quit her job to launch a Kickstarter campaign that raised $100K in 30 days. Dream, Girl – the documentary showcasing the stories of inspiring and ambitious female entrepreneurs – was born. Then Erin met Komal Minhas, and both their lives changed forever. Dedicated to amplifying the stories of women and girl’s Komal brings an unparalleled energy to producing, and creating new standards for distributing independent films.
