If you see a celebrity partnering with a celebrity physician for a product, I'm here to tell you it won't help. It's a money grab. Menopause is getting a makeover, and menopausal women are spending a lot of money. It's a multi-billion dollar industry, and celebrities in their mid to late 40s and 50s are leveraging their menopause experiences into cash grabs. By sharing their stories and teaming up with doctors - who may or may not be medical professionals - they're leading women to believe that their proprietary supplement formula is the miracle that saved them from the difficulties of menopause. I'm so sick and tired of seeing these ads, and today, I want to expose this disturbing trend. I'm talking about Gwyneth Paltrow, Halle Berry, and Drew Barrymore's entry into the menopause product space, how they use emotional appeals and unproven claims to sell their products, why it's crucial to use evidence-based recommendations, red flags that should trigger your skepticism, where you can find real help, and more. Enjoy the episode!   Highlights The trend of celebrities leveraging menopause and perimenopause experiences for financial gain Gwyneth Paltrow's path into menopause offerings and her collabs with doctors The problem with these celebrity-backed menopause supplements Red flags to look out for with “kitchen-sink” style supplements Halle Berry's menopause products and marketing strategies The lack of scientific evidence behind a lot of celebrity-endorsed products Why it's risky to rely on the product reviews that brands post on their websites Breaking down some of the claims and deceptive marketing language used for these products Drew Barrymore's on-camera menopause experience and subsequent supplement promotion Why supplements that claim to solve tons of problems at once are often ineffective   Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Over 150 million women around the world are on the birth control pill. And while “the pill” has given women the ability to control their fertility, there are things that every woman should know about its effects, short-term and long-term.    Our guest today - professor, research psychologist, and author Dr. Sarah Hill -  is here to discuss her must-read book This Is Your Brain on Birth Control: How the Pill Changes Everything, where she sheds light on all the ways hormonal birth control affects women – the good, the bad, and the unsettling.    So if you're interested in learning the truth about how the pill could impact your - or someone you love - brain,  sex life,  choice of partners, or even how it's shaping our society and culture, tune in to be blown away by the information we discuss in this episode!   “I was at a research talk, and one of my colleagues was giving a research presentation on the effects of early life trauma on the stress response, and he'd mentioned in the presentation that they only looked at the men and their sample from all these people that they collected because most of the women in their study were on hormonal birth control. And everybody knows that women who are on hormonal birth control don't have a cortisol response to stress. Then, I went up to him after his presentation. I was like, ‘What is it that you said about women on birth control not having a cortisol response to stress?' And he said, ‘Oh yeah, you know, surprised me too, but they've been publishing on this for a really long time and nobody really understands why.' I felt different when I went off of hormonal birth control. Women have a different stress response when they're on hormonal birth control compared to when they're not. Because when you take the pill, it's gonna change your hormones, and when you change your hormones, that changes everything.” - Dr. Sarah Hill   What we discuss in this episode: - How Dr. Hill's life changed after she stopped taking hormonal birth control. - The birth control pill and cortisol response.  - The birth control pill's effect on body weight. - The neurobiological effects of the pill.  - How attraction to your mate is altered by the birth control pill.  - How the pill affects libido and sexual function. - Why testosterone levels are lower in men than at any time in recent history. - Adolescents and the pill.   Resources: - Dr. Hill's website: Sarah E. How are we at a point where women are terrified of a hormone they've had in their bodies most of their lives? Many of us have heard horrible things about estrogen and its connection to breast cancer. A lot of this public aversion stems from a study that came out in the early 2000s called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). The WHI was a landmark study designed to define the risks and benefits of interventions, notably hormonal therapy. Unfortunately, when journals and the media reported on the findings, they didn't put them into the appropriate clinical context and did not mention the study's limitations. Ultimately, this led to women ditching their hormones en masse, suffering in silence without an alternative. Today I'm sharing what you need to know about the WHI, what the data shows about the connection between hormone therapy and the risk of disease, why we need to shift our perspective on hormone therapy, and alternatives for women who can't benefit from estrogen therapy. Let's try not to be afraid of estrogen - it's not a bad thing.   Highlights Telling women across the board not to go on hormones is a misogynistic statement What you need to know about the Women's Health Initiative study The problem with how the media reported the results of the WHI study Positive outcomes of hormone therapy identified in the study Limitations of the WHI Considerations for women with a history of breast cancer What the studies showed about the benefits for osteoporosis prevention The relationship between estrogen therapy and increased risk of dementia and stroke Detoxifying estrogen in your body My confession for estrogen replacement Alternatives to estradiol for menopause symptoms   Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. Episode #474: Exercise as Medicine-Dr. Kenneth Cooper's Trailblazing Insights on Preventive Health

HALO Talks

Dr. Kenneth Cooper (often referred to as the "Father of Aerobics") has been a one of the seminal pioneers in the field of preventive medicine for over five decades. Despite tremendous skepticism from the medical community at large initially, he founded the Cooper Clinic in Dallas in December, 1970 with the belief that taking care of healthy individuals was just as important as treating the sick. Over the years, he has worked to change the perception of preventive medicine and has become a leading advocate for fitness and wellness. His dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles has made arguably one of the biggest impacts in the field of medicine over the past few decades, and his work continues to not only teach physicians, but also to inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being. Dr. Cooper shares his personal daily exercise routine, and information about his upcoming documentary and book releases. Pete and Dr. Cooper delve into the importance of physical fitness in reducing healthcare costs and improving quality of life, as well as discussing strategies to motivate people to prioritize exercise and embrace a healthy lifestyle.  Financial Incentives for Exercise: "I think most one of the most beneficial things we could do to motivate people to exercise is financial motivation. Whether it's getting a reduction in their insurance or a reduction in their income tax because they're living longer. I tried to present that in Washington one time because I wanted to concentrate on toddler obesity and diabetes, adult obesity and diabetes, and the cost of health care. I was recommended to be Surgeon General on two different occasions when Bush was President. But in order to do that, I would have had to sell the aerobics center to the highest bidder, so I turned it down." Key themes discussed Transition from military service to successful research career. Promoting preventive medicine for physicians and laypeople. More exercise is better, but not indefinitely. Adequate sleep, stress control, and vitamin supplementation. Pickleball promotes health, socializing, and community benefits. Increased fitness leads to decreased health care costs. Financial incentives can motivate people to exercise. Embrace exercise to live a fuller life. A few key takeaways: 1. Exercise is a vital component for a long and healthy life: Dr. Kenneth Cooper's personal journey and emphasis on the importance of exercise serve as a reminder that incorporating physical activity into one's lifestyle can significantly impact overall health and well-being. 2. Importance of investing in quality vitamins: Dr. Cooper's discussion about vitamin certification and the need for purity and efficacy ensures listeners understand the significance of choosing high-quality vitamins for disease prevention and health maintenance. 3. The impact of physical activity on healthcare costs: With studies highlighting the potential cost reduction associated with increased physical activity, it's clear that investing in exercise can have significant financial benefits on a personal and global scale. 4. Incentivizing exercise for better health: Dr. Cooper and host Pete Moore discuss the potential for fitness incentives such as insurance reductions or tax benefits to motivate people to stay fit, reinforcing the idea that financial incentives can absolutely play a role in promoting physical activity. 5. Confession: You are being lied to about hormone testing, and, in many cases, you're either not being tested enough or being tested way too much. There are many “hormone experts” out there, and the information they share is often wildly contradictory. From providers who say hormone imbalance doesn't exist to those who only want to see results from a specific day of your cycle, how do you filter out the valuable insights from the noise? When it comes to your hormones, I always say, “test, don't guess.” Today I'm sharing everything you need to know about hormone testing so you can be empowered when you go to your OBGYN, naturopath, or whichever provider you prefer to see. We're talking about the pros and cons of different hormone tests, how you can determine which tests to ask for, details about how testing is done, how to spot red flags, and more.   Highlights Why a rigid approach to testing doesn't make sense The right time to test your hormones Why hormone testing is crucial Red flags that suggest your provider isn't a hormone expert The problem with saliva testing and the cases where it's worth it Pros and cons of serum/blood testing Hormones and proteins I prefer to check through serum testing How DUTCH tests work Advantages and disadvantages of urine testing Why I believe DUTCH tests are overused   Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. “I think it's scammy. I think it's dangerous. And I'm saddened that many women are being lied to about these products.” Have you seen those ads on social media for menopause or perimenopause supplements and creams that claim that they will fix all your woes? None of these products have a shred of proof behind their dramatic claims, and many of them are backed by huge celebrities promoting them like they're a godsend for women. The sad thing to me is that, ultimately, they're spreading misinformation. Today, I'm talking all about these scammy topical face creams, from those promoting the fact that they have estrogen in them to wild yam creams and those that are over the counter while exposing women to prescription-strength progesterone. What am I going to do?' And I thought, ‘Well, I can always get the chemo-radiation.' He said, ‘No. No, because when it works they're going to say it was the chemo and radiation that did it. You cannot have, so you have to make a choice. No chemo. No radiation.' He pulled out a file drawer and he said, ‘You're welcome to spend as much time as you want looking at the research that I based this on.' And he spent a full two hours with me. You know, when was the doctor ever going to do that? Today's guest is Dr. Faraz Harsini. He's a cultivated meat bioprocessing scientist at the Good Food Institute and the founder and CEO of Allied Scholars for Animal Protection – a nonprofit that supports and mentors student advocates and future vegan leaders for the abolition of cruelty to humans and nonhumans. Dr. Harsini appeared on the podcast in episode 256, in which we discussed his upbringing in Iran as a member of the LGBT community, his advocacy work on college campuses, and a myriad of social justice issues, but the conversation was so powerful, and there was so much ground we didn't get to cover, especially about his current work, that we had to have him back.    So whether or not you listened to the first part of our interview with him, you definitely want to stay with us as we tackle some serious topical issues that pertain to everyone.   “I guess the reason that I promote a plant-based diet and veganism full-time today is because I did my entire master's on cancer, and I worked on proteins involving cancer. And the fact that nobody ever mentioned diet at all, like I'm not talking about my research, no one, even those textbooks. And it had to come as a surprise to me when I like had to learn it by myself, and then you looked at it and you realized that every single Cancer Institute in the world says the less meat you eat, the better. Every single Cancer Institute in the world, and some even include Dairy and other types of meat, but when it comes to processed and unprocessed red meat, every single Cancer Institute in the world says the less meat you eat, the better.” - Dr. Faraz Harsini   What we discuss in this episode: - The complete protein myth and why plants are such a powerful source of protein. - What happens when you cook and eat red meat? - The benefits of cultivated meat production. - The dangers posed to humans from animal experimentation. - The cruelty Dr. Harsini witnessed while visiting a dairy farm in Texas. - Dr. Harsini's thoughts on changing our food system. - The importance of speaking up as a vegan.   Resources: - Dr. Harsini's website: Dr. Faraz Harsini - ASAP's website: Allied Scholars for Animal Protection - Good Food Institute: Faraz Harsini, M.Sc., Ph.D. - The Good Food Institute - Dr. Harsini's Instagram: Dr. Faraz Harsini (@dr_faraz_harsini) • Instagram photos and videos - Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrFarazHarsini - YouTube: Dr. Faraz Harsini - YouTube - Animal Activism Mentorship - https://animalactivismmentorship.com/   ★☆★ Click the link below to support the ADD SOY Act! ★☆★ https://switch4good.org/add-soy-act/ ★☆★ Share the website and get your resources here ★☆★ https://kidsandmilk.org/ ★☆★ Send us a voice message and ask a question. Welcome back to part three of my special series of interviews with my kids. So far, you've heard from my firstborn, Hannah, and my eldest son, Hunter, and today we're jumping to my youngest, Anthony. Anthony was born via C-section on November 22 in Tucson, Arizona. Named after his great-great-grandfather, Antonio, his name is in many middle names and first names throughout my family. As my youngest, I often joke about him being my favorite, but one of the things I am most proud of him for is his ability to turn difficult situations into opportunities for growth and leadership. Never one to mindlessly follow the pack, I am confident he will be super successful, and I'm excited to see what he does. In this conversation, Anthony and I talk about his childhood, the experience of moving to a new city and feeling behind in school, how sports helped him to overcome his concerns about his height, struggles, and triumphs in football and theater, Anthony's college experiences at Blinn, his future career aspirations, and more. Thanks for your support, and enjoy the episode!   Highlights The perks of being the youngest in a family of four kids Anthony's experience of feeling behind starting at a new school in third grade after moving to Austin How sports helped Anthony overcome his doubts about being smaller The transformative experience Anthony had over his years on his high school football team Embracing a love of theater and music The challenges of balancing multiple activities and interests at the same time Anthony's initial disappointment and ultimate decision to attend the Texas A&M-Blinn TEAM Program The experience of pledging a fraternity and finding your place in college Anthony's career aspirations   Sponsored by: Femmenessence It's a rare occurrence to find a non-prescription supplement that becomes a go-to for hormone health and Femmenessence is just that. I can't bring myself emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or physically to use hormone pellets with my patients. Hormone pellets are tiny pellets containing hormones and medications inserted under your skin and replaced every three to six months. In my clinic, many unhappy patients come to me with complications from pellets. Outside of my clinical experience, I also tried pellets myself a few years ago, which was the worst experience of my life. Looking at the science, there are much better methods of getting bioidentical hormones, such as topical creams and sublingual troches, and they don't come with the downsides of hormone pellets. Today I'm sharing the top ten reasons why I'm a pellet anarchist, misleading ways that pellets are marketed, the things women need to know before using pellets, and what to do if you've had pellets and want to make a change.   Highlights How hormone pellets work Pitfall #1: They're expensive Pitfall #2: Hormone levels are too high Pitfall #3: It's a surgical procedure Pitfall #4: Once they're in, they don't come out Pitfall #5: You're subjected to minor surgery every 3-6 months Pitfall #6: Irregular absorption rates Pitfall #7: It's a cash cow for providers Pitfall #8: Who's inserting them? Between his trips criss-crossing the country, I asked Dr. Barry Young to stop in my office and cover an important topic:  Death Notifications.    It's shocking how little and how poorly this subject has been taught because it directly affects the relationship between a community and its police department.  Every death notification leaves a permanent mark on at least two people:  the recipient… and the notifier.Warning: this episode contains limited descriptions of suicide and other deaths.  Listener discretion is advised.Resources:Dr. Barry Young's website: https://www.servingheroes.netBarry's calendar of trainings: https://www.servingheroes.net/register-calendar/Music is by Alexander NakaradaHey Chaplain Podcast Bonus Episode 24Tags:Death Notifications, Chaplains, Counseling, Death, Police, Training, Independence, Kansas City, Kansas, MissouriSupport the showThanks for Listening! Born and raised in a country where being true to himself is a crime punishable by death, our guest today, Dr. Faraz Harsini, is familiar with oppression and brutality. Dr. Harsini is a senior scientist at the Good Food Institute, where he works to bring the world sustainable, cruelty-free protein. He is also the CEO and founder of ASAP, which stands for Allied Scholars for Animal Protection. It's a nonprofit that supports student advocates and future vegan leaders to abolish cruelty to humans and nonhumans.  Tune in to hear how this highly accomplished scientist, activist, and outspoken member of the LGBT community is applying his knowledge and passion to raise awareness about animal rights as a social justice issue to reach his goal of ending speciesism.   “I always encourage people, especially vegans that you know, to say something. I know so many people who are dedicating their lives to animal rights and veganism today just because some random person said something in the past. So, every little action, every time we speak up it matters. Just because somebody gets offended and sad doesn't mean that you did something wrong.” – Dr. Faraz Harsini   What we discuss in this episode: - Dr. Harsini's upbringing in Iran.  - His harrowing experiences as an activist in Iran.  - His journey to veganism. - Why animal rights is a social justice issue. - How Dr. Harsini empowers people to change. - What inspired Dr. Harsini to start ASAP. - The difference ASAP is making on college campuses. - Why humans aren't meant to eat meat.
