"Es gibt Hinweise, dass Valve die Steam Frame bald rausbringt!" Das haben wir alle paar Wochen wieder vermeldet. Nun war es tatsächlich so weit und man kann sich zumindest auf eine Warteliste für das Modell mit 256 GB oder 1 TB Speicher eintragen. Der Preis ist dabei weniger schlimm als erwartet, aber mit 1049 Euro für das "kleine" Modell und 1279 Euro für das mit 1 TB definitiv kein Schnäppchen, zumal die Handstraps, die für das Fingertracking benötigt werden nicht einmal inbegriffen sind. Dabei sind lediglich das Headset selbst, zwei Controller, der Streaming Stick und Half Life Alyx. Der direkten Konkurrenz Meta Quest 3 hat es ein paar Sachen voraus, wie das einfach einzurichtende Streaming und Features wie foveated Rendering und Streaming dank des Eyetrackings, Passthrough gibt es bei der Frame hingegen nur monochrom; eine bessere Kamera gibt es für 160 Euro als Addon von einer anderen Firma. Ein großer Vorteil ist die Datensparsamkeit der Steam Frame: Während man bei der Quest 3 alles an Nutzungsdaten mit dem Headset selbst, was die Kameras und Mikrofone von der Umgebung erfassen, seien es die Wohnung, Partner, Kinder, Haustiere, seine Seele, an Meta verkauft, interessiert sich Valve nicht an Daten, die über die normale Nutzung von Steam hinausgehen. Worum geht's? Windows 95 war weit mehr als nur ein neues Microsoft-Betriebssystem. Mit Startmenü, Taskleiste, Papierkorb, langen Dateinamen, Plug and Play und einer konsequent auf Mausbedienung ausgerichteten Oberfläche veränderte es grundlegend, wie Millionen Menschen mit einem PC arbeiteten. Gleichzeitig blieb unter der modernen Fassade vieles beim Alten: Windows 95 basierte weiterhin auf DOS und war ein komplizierter Hybrid aus 16- und 32-Bit-Technik. Henner und Chris zeichnen zunächst die Entwicklung von der Kommandozeile zu den grafischen Oberflächen nach. Sie sprechen über die frühen Windows-Versionen, den Erfolg von Windows 3.0 und 3.1 sowie über Microsofts schwieriges Verhältnis zu IBM und OS/2. Während Windows NT als technisch fortschrittliches, aber anspruchsvolles System für Unternehmen entstand, benötigte Microsoft für den wachsenden Massenmarkt ein günstigeres und kompatibleres Windows. Aus verschiedenen Projekten wie Cougar, Panther und Stimpy entwickelte sich schließlich das unter dem Codenamen Chicago bekannte Windows 95.
