Well, the Olympics are giving us some great performances and amazing story lines, so we have dialed up an encore presentation of our 2020 conversation with a true grandson of Madison, Andrew Maraniss, about his award-winning book Games of Deception, the True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team, and the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany. You all know what basketball is, you all know what the Olympics are, you all know who Hitler was. So that part doesn't need any more introduction. As to Andrew Maraniss. First of all, he is, as you may have surmised, the son of two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and best-selling author David Maraniss and the pioneering environmentalist Linda Maraniss, born right here in Madison, now a resident of Brentwood, Tenn., with his wife Alison, and their two young children. David, of course, has also written a best-selling book about the Olympics, Rome 1960: The Olympics That Changed the World. I interviewed David about that book when it came out in 2008, but no longer have access to the audio. David has also written a book about Andrew's grandfather, the great journalist Elliott Maraniss, who I am proud to say   was also my former boss at the Capital Times. That interview, about David's book A Good American Family: The Red Scare and My Father was the pilot episode of MBB in 2019. You see how this all comes around? Like his father, Andrew is really good at telling historical and sports stories with a larger social message.  Games of Deception received the 2020 Association of Jewish Libraries Sydney Taylor Book Honors for middle grade readers and was named one of Amazon's Top Books of 2019. His first book, the New York Times-bestseller Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South, received the 2015 Lillian Smith Book Award and the lone Special Recognition honor at the 2015 RFK Book Awards, the first sports-related book so honored. The Young Reader edition was named one of the Top 10 Biographies and Top 10 Sports Books of 2017 by the American Library Association and was selected as a Notable Social Studies Book for 2019 by the National Council for the Social Studies. And, of course, you'll recall that Andrew was our guest in June for his new book about sports and society, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, the first gay ballplayer in major league baseball. Andrew is a contributor to ESPN's TheUndefeated.com. and Visiting Author at Vanderbilt University Athletics, where he was formerly the associate director of media relations – a lesson in the value of leaving a job on good terms. He was also the first-ever media relations manager for the Tampa Bay Rays. You can follow him on Twitter @trublu24 and visit his website at andrewmaraniss.com.

Stu Levitan welcomes award-winning and bestselling author Andrew Maraniss for a special Pride month conversation about Glenn Burke, who was a rising young star in Major League Baseball in the late seventies until he was effectively run out of the game because he was gay. The book is Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, from the good people at Philomel Books, an imprint of Penguin Random House. Andrew is that rarest of authors – not just a true son of Madison, but a grandson of Madison, born right here in 1970 to Linda and David Maraniss, Linda an environmentalist and David of course also being an award-winning and bestselling author and the son of Mary Maraniss, a book editor at the UW Press, and her husband Elliott, the subject of David's most recent book and during the very period that Andrew writes about, my editor at the Capital Times. This is Andrew's third book examining the intersection of sports and society, and our third conversation, following Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the collision of race and sports in the south in 2015 and Games of Deception: The True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team at the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany in 2019. Glenn Burke was the first openly gay Major League Baseball player, who, while not coming out publicly until his playing days were over, his sexuality was known to his teammates, family, and friends.  He also was the inventor of the high five.  We had the pleasure of discussing this book and learning about a player who made his biggest impact off the field.  Andrew is a Visiting Author at Vanderbilt University Athletics and a contributor to ESPN's TheUndefeated.com. I talk to New York Times best-selling author, Andrew Marannis (@TruBlu24). His new book, Singled Out: The True Story of Glenn Burke, is out now! Glenn Burke was the first openly gay MLB player and was the inventor of the high five. Burke deserves to be rightfully revered as an important social justice sports icon like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali before him, and Colin Kaepernick after him.  Andrew talks to me about Glenn Burke coming of age in the 1950s and 60s Bay Area during the Civil Rights movement and the rise of the Black Panther Party; How Glenn Burke did not come out publicly during his brief three-year career,  but many of his teammates, family, and friends were aware of his sexuality; and how Burke was driven from the game due to homophobia but left an impact and legacy on and off the baseball diamond with the LGBTQ+ community for decades to come. Also, Andrew tells me the story of Glenn Burke inventing the high five with teammate and current Astros Manager Dusty Baker; how Glenn was also the first MLB player to rock some Nike's during an MLB game; and Glenn dealing with racism in the minor leagues, homophobia in the big leagues and society, and the AIDS epidemic. I hope you enjoy the interview! "Just get started.” – Andrew Maraniss Andrew is the son of Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post journalist and author, David Maraniss, so it's no surprise that he has writing in his blood (and a touch of impostor syndrome). His winding path to bestseller started out as a history writing assignment at Vanderbilt University that only years later became his award-winning book Strong Inside: Perry Wallace and the Collision of Race and Sports in the South. His lauded basketball biography went on to become a bestseller, and received the 2015 Lillian Smith Book Award for civil rights and the RFK Book Awards’ Special Recognition Prize for social justice, the first sports-related book to ever receive either honor. The author's latest, Games of Deception: The True Story of the First U.S. Olympic Basketball Team at the 1936 Olympics in Hitler's Germany, is a Young Adult title that chronicles "...the remarkable true story of the birth of Olympic basketball." The book has been called "An insightful, gripping account of basketball and bias," and investigative journalist and No. 1 bestselling author Bob Woodward called it, "Shocking and triumphant." Andrew is a Visiting Author at Vanderbilt University Athletics and a contributor to ESPN’s TheUndefeated.com. He has appeared on NPR’s All Things Considered, NBC’s Meet The Press, MSNBC’s Morning Joe, ESPN’s Keith Olbermann Show, ESPN Radio, and many others. Episode 9 is live and it is LIT!   Today, on the show - When Race and Politics Collide!  I am joined by my friend Dakarai Dorsett of 10thYearSeniors.com discussing the latest news in the 2016 Presidential Election, focused on Donald Trump's attempts to appeal to black voters.   We discuss the effectiveness of his messaging, how tone deaf the Republicans continue to be, and whether this latest message is actually meant for black people, or from someone else entirely.   We also raise the question about whether some of what Donald Trump says is true - is Hillary Clinton a bigot?  Well, no not that part.  But we tackle whether Hillary Clinton and the Democrats are genuinely courting black voters or if this is all just political opportunism that we can expect every four years!   PLUS, the second half of the show gets heavy with the controversy surrounding NFL Quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, Colin Kaepernick, and his recent protest during the playing of the national anthem.   The outrage for this protest has been exactly what we've come to expect, and we discuss the real issue behind this protest, and try to understand why the discussion always devolves so quickly.   Listen to hear my first EPIC RANT on this issue, so much that by the end, I was sweating and my hands were shaking, and I spilled ketchup all over my floor.   We also hearken back to the message of Frederick Douglass and his infamous "What to a slave is the 4th of July?" speech as we raise the question - why can't the country understand that the American experience is not the same for everyone.  This was a difficult, yet thoughtful discussion and I promise - you won't want to miss.  For further background on this topic, please check out this article by Bomani Jones on TheUndefeated.com.    TELL A FRIEND. The Greatest RB Of All Time Debate won't stop!  This week, we give Matt Williamson (Dynasty Blueprint podcast, @williamsonnfl on Twitter) and Matt Chatham (FootballbyFootball.com, @chatham58) the floor to debate the topic. But first...PodVader is joined by Neil (Redskins), Rob (Bills), Davey (Vikings) and a late arriving Justin (Seahawks) to discuss the latest news in the NFL.We begin with the injuries piling up in Buffalo. Rob gives his take on the situation and what the Bills could possible do to ride out the injuries (can anyone say Beer-man???). ESPN's new TheUndefeated.com debuted with a story on RGIII's time in Washington. Neil has some strong opinions about how the young QB conducted himself with the coaching staff and people who were there to be mentors. The SuperFans wonder how that would play with other teams. Then it's debate time (around the 25 minute mark). Matt Williamson is a big Jim Brown guy. Matt Chatham is not. They discuss some of the other RBs that could be considered, including a good look at Adrian Peterson's resume. Also, the one guy from the modern era that doesn't get enough credit (Hint: He shares a nickname with a HOF linebacker). The show wraps with Patrick (Patriots) joining the show to talk about the NFL's Crime and Punishment division as the Baltimore Ravens were found to violate some rules during their rookie camp.  Patrick and Davey debate the way the NFL handles dealing out penalties to teams. They actually agree on many of their main points. Pod takes the chance to make a "deflate" joke. Follow on Twitter: @nfupodcastFacebook.com/nfupodcastParticipate in our conversations - nextfanup@gmail.comDownload and subscribe on iTunes or check out the aha Radio app available in iTunes and the Google Play store.
