As a companion to our Something Who 101, which has clips from the first 5 years of our podcast, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who, which included our 100th episode. If you haven't heard us before, this will give you a flavour of our podcast. And if you have, here's a reminder. And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul and Giles, Rick rapidly became a fixture, and we had several appearances from Jess Jurkovic. Gav Rymill came back, Tim Burrows popped by for an episode and Simon Guerrier made a return visit. Richard had a nice chat with Jonn Elledge about his enthusiasm for Doctor Who. We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform. The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end. The Something Who logo, which features prominently on all our cover art was designed for us by Bea Garrido. She's a really talented artist, who you can find by following this link: https://beagarridoart.weebly.com/, where you can buy prints of some remarkable paintings of characters from Doctor Who.

Down The Garden Path Podcast

This week on Down the Garden Path, we continue to explore ways we can have a positive impact on our environment with a discussion about electric cars with Tim Burrows. We enjoyed learning more about the topic and realize it is an important discussion to have. Change is coming but will be happening slowly.  Tim has owned and driven battery-electric cars for the past seven years and has logged over 250,000 kilometres without the need for gasoline or diesel fuel. He now enjoys sharing his EV experience with others and breaks down many myths and misconceptions about electric vehicle ownership. Tim is a member of the Electric Vehicle Society, a non-profit organization that works to promote the understanding and adoption of electric mobility in Canada. In his role there, he chairs the EV Society’s Mississauga Chapter. Join us this week for our conversation with electric car enthusiast Tim Burrows. Tim fielded a lot of questions from our radio audience in this popular episode and answered some of our own. What made you buy your first electric car?  Electric cars have been around for a while; what are some new developments?  What are some of the concerns and objections about electric cars (like the expense -- we can't all afford a Tesla). Despite the high upfront cost involved in purchasing an electric car, there are many factors that contribute to you saving money in the long run. A lot of the concern seems to surround the batteries. Tim discusses the length of the charge, and how the cars actually work to conserve the energy they have in them. He also points out that you start with a full charge every morning. We learn about the issues surrounding the materials in the batteries: cobalt and lithium. Some of these concerns centre around the environmental and humanitarian factors impacted by those components.  Electric car companies and other electronics companies like Apple are striving to find ways to remove cobalt from their batteries.  We discuss how in Ontario and Canada our electricity is very “clean” energy and despite possible rate increases for electricity, the per km rate of electricity will still be on par or lower than what we are paying per litre for gas Tim is an enthusiast in the electric car industry and has no affiliation with any company. Julia started growing food after having children and fell in love with it!  She gardens organically and tries to keep things simple while growing new and uncommon vegetables each year. Her garden is located in Mono, Ontario, on 25 acres on the Niagara Escarpment. Two years ago, Julia expanded her vegetable garden from 2000 to 7000 square feet, continuing in the formal kitchen garden style. Julia has been growing vegetables and writing about gardening for over 10 years and has been published twice in the Canadian Organic Grower magazine. She loves to inspire others to have their own vegetable gardens by showing them the simpler side of gardening. Join us this week for our conversation with Gardening Girl Julia Dimakos. Frank Hickson brings over 30 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Flames' football coaching staff, including 11 years at the NCAA Division I-A level and 16 years as a running backs coach, the same position he oversaw as a part of the Flames' football program. Since joining the Flames' program, Hickson has continued the running back tradition at Liberty. He aided in the Flames finishing the 2004 season ranked 22nd in the nation in rushing (212.2 yards per game). He helped Dre Barnes finish as the school's all-time leading rushing in 2004 with 4,035 yards. Hickson was also instrumental in helping guide Liberty's newest "rising star" and current member of the Houston Texans, Samkon Gado, during his senior campaign, and Eugene Goodman of the AFL's Columbus Destroyers. In 2005, Hickson helped running back Zach Terrell become Liberty's first-ever Big South Rookie of the Year. Hickson instructed one of the best running back tandems in program history. Rashad Jennings became the sixth running back in school history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark, helping Liberty rank 19th nationally in rushing yards (195.0 per game). Jennings and Terrell both reached double figures in rushing touchdowns, becoming the second rushing pair to accomplish the feat since 1973. Prior to his time at Liberty, Hickson's served a two-year stint at Oklahoma State as the running backs coach during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. During his time at Oklahoma State, he instructed All-Big 12 running backs Reggie White and Tatem Bell, who is now with the Detroit Lions, while also instructing Tim Burrows, who signed a contract with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. In 1998, Hickson was the head coach at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. During the 1996 and 1997 seasons, he served as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach at North Texas where he helped the Mean Green post victories over Utah State and in-state rival Texas Tech in 1997. He also coached Juqua Wilburn, North Texas' all-time leading rusher. Hickson had a memorable stay at South Carolina for two years (1994 and 1995). He was part of the first Gamecock program to post a victory in a bowl game when South Carolina defeated West Virginia in the 1994 Blockbuster/National Car Rental Bowl game on New Year's Day. While at South Carolina, Hickson was responsible for the coaching of four NFL running backs in the Arizona Cardinals' Troy Hambrick, Pittsburgh Steelers' Duce Staley and former Cincinnati Bengal Brandon Bennett and former Chicago Bear Stanley Pritchett. Hickson also served as the running backs coach for four years at the United States Naval Academy (1990-93), one year at Temple (1989), three years at Marshall (1986-88), one year at Mesa State College (1985) and two years as a graduate assistant at Wichita State (1983-84), while earning his master's degree in education. While at the Naval Academy, Hickson recruited quarterback Chris McCoy, a Heisman Trophy candidate, and defensive back Chris Hart, who are both members of the Hall of Fame at the Naval Academy. While at Marshall, Hickson helped the Thundering Herd to two NCAA Division I-AA National Championship games in 1987 and 1988. He also assisted Marshall to a third-place national ranking during its 1988 championship-game run. Hickson also coached Ron Darby at Marshall, the Southern Conference's all-time leader with 6,700 all-purpose yards. Hickson is a 1983 graduate of Tuskegee in Tuskegee, Ala., where he received his bachelor's degree in physical education with an emphasis on recreation. He has been a frequent guest speaker for the Frank Glazer National Coaching Clinic since 1994. Hickson and his wife, Meesha, have two children, Leidra and Frankie.

Tom Holland is joined by Dr Matthew Green for a programme that's all at sea. Helen Castor is in Great Yarmouth where local people voted overwhelmingly for Brexit. One of their major gripes with Brussels was the detrimental impact they thought EU quotas had on the town's fishing industry. Dr James Barrett is an archaeologist who researches the medieval fishing communities of Britain and he reveals that, 800 years ago, the fishermen of Gt Yarmouth worked closely with their counterparts across the North Sea to bring in unimaginable quantities of herring - along with Britain's main supply of wine. Earlier this year and just a few miles north of Great Yarmouth, villagers living in chalets on the cliffs at Hemsby were evacuated as the so-called "Beast from the East" tore into the unstable, sandy cliffs. Several of these properties have since been demolished, while others have been the focus of a frantic attempt to protect them from the unforgiving sea. Such destruction is commonplace in the history of the East Coast. Geographer Sally Brown from the University of Southampton heads to East Yorkshire to meet Marcus Jecock from Historic England and find out how the North Sea has shaped the lives of people living nearby for centuries. The British seaside resort has been an unloved place ever since package holidays took its clientele to sunnier climes overseas. Now funding bodies such as the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council have been investing in projects that seek to restore some of these places to their former glory. But how effective is this and does one seaside history fit every coastal resort? Guardian writer Tim Burrows goes home to Southend to ponder the death of the seaside.
